Undrafted free agent signings

I think the defensive UDFAs have a few guys that can improve our coverage units on special teams.

LBs Dylan Cole, Avery Williams, Dayon Pratt, and S TJ Mutcherson all look like guys who close downhill in a hurry and make sure tackles on the film i've seen.

I think Cole has the best chance to make the roster followed closely by Mutcherson but am interested in seeing how these guys compete in camp/preseason. All have the qualities needed to be special teams studs. Avery Williams in particular lays the wood but he is just a bit too small I think.

Offensively it appears we took guys with good measurables but lacking in college production for the most part. Whereas we drafted guys with proven production. I am rooting for Riley McCarron the most to make the team at WR. He's obviously got the measurables needed to succeed. Need to find out why a guy so athletic couldn't get meaningful snaps at WR until his final season. Hopefully he was a late bloomer and the best is yet to come!

Those are superb stats before you factor in McCarron didn’t train full-time for pro day. He works for an accounting company and was given the day off to go through drills on Monday.

Thats a crazy good 3cone and forty, 93.0 Sparq rating. Looks like a prototypical slot guy with great COD and wiggle who can run and cut away from coverage.

I caught that too. He actually only played in 4 games in 2015 with what I could discern to be due to mostly back problems. He did not participate most of the strength and conditioning activities in the spring of 2016 because of back issues. Then in Nov of 2016, he suffered an undisclosed shoulder injury and went on to miss his final home game.

Didn't Foster run a 4.6+ (.01 shy of a 4.7) 40? Yet on the football field he outran everyone. When signing UDFAs you mostly throw out the numbers and just look at the tape, these guys are long shots anyways. You just try to find football players at this point, not workout heroes. He's still most likely not going to make the team.. most of these guys aren't.

I was wondering what happened to him when he was reported not to show for minicamp. He has quite an interesting history.........not glamorous, but one that makes you think that he could make this team as a diamond in the rough.

Dare Ogunbowale never spent a full season as Wisconsin’s feature back, but that didn’t stop him from establishing himself as an NFL Draft prospect.

After walking onto the Badgers team as a defensive back, Ogunbowale switched to offense midway through his sophomore year and racked up 1,518 yards on 319 carries, plus 13 rushing touchdowns.

1. Ogunbowale began his career as a walk-on cornerback

When Ogunbowale first arrived in Madison, he didn’t have a scholarship. He had barely been recruited out of Marquette University High School in Milwaukee and he chose to walk on at Wisconsin as a cornerback.

He redshirted in 2012, then played in eight games, mostly on special teams, in 2013. He had only two tackles that year, but one of them came against South Carolina in the Capital One Bowl.

He wouldn’t earn his scholarship until just prior to the 2015 season.

2. He switched to running back midway two games into his sophomore season and contributed immediately

Weeks into the 2014 season, Wisconsin coach Gary Andersen approached Ogunbowale and asked if he’d like to try running back. The Badgers had been beat up at that position, and Andersen was impressed by Ogunbowale’s elusiveness in drills.

Though Ogunbowale hadn’t even played running back in high school, he took to the position quickly, in part thanks to mentorship from his roommate, All-American Melvin Gordon. Backing up Gordon and Corey Clement, he rushed for 193 yards on 34 carries.

The next year, with Gordon in the NFL and Clement out most of the year with an injury (and a suspension), Ogunbowale was ready. He led the Badgers with 819 yards rushing and seven touchdowns. As a senior, he rushed for 506 yards on 5.6 yards per carry as Clement’s back-up.

Giacomini is a tackle we picked up from the Jets. He's 31 and coming off back surgery. He was known to play nasty and physical, but his performance and health have been in decline over the past few years.

I almost said he's on his way to the glue factory, but few people under 30 even know what that means anymore.

May be coincidental, 2014 is the only year he played under Devlin. There was serious decline in 2015 & he was hurt most of 2016.

Hopefully there's something special with him & Devlin & he can stay healthy.

Looks like he was probably picked up for his STs prowess/versatility rather than his WR skills. Could possibly try him out at the slot.

The Hosuton Texans have signed tryout player from rookie mini camp, former Florida wide receivier Chris Thompson.

At Florida, Thompson appeared in 11 games in 2016 and played wide receiver, kick returner, gunner on special teams and emergency defensive back. Thompson in 2016 had 13 kick returns for 283 yards, and 7 total tackles with a forced fumble. Thompson was used in multiple roles for the Gators and now that versatility will give him a shot with the Texans, something Bill O’Brien and the coaching staff covet with their players.

Thompson at the Florida pro day measured at 5-11 and 171 lbs. and ran a 4.48 forty yard dash. He also had a vertical jump of 34 1/2 inches and a broad jump of 121 inches.

Giacomini played in just five games last year for the Jets because of his back issues, but he committed a penalty (one was declined) for each game he played. In 2015 he was guilty of eight infractions, including four holding penalties.

In 2014 he tied for the league lead in offensive pre-snap penalties with five false starts. Seattle fans know about it too; he was guilty of 20 accepted penalties in his final two seasons with the Seahawks.

When skills are not there to begin with or are lost to numerous injuries (http://www.texanstalk.com/posts/2715565/), performance suffers and attempts to compensate for deficiencies predictably translate into all the above you've referenced as poor attempts to compensate come into play.

Closer Look: What Does Breno Giacomini Mean for the Houston Texans?

The Houston Texans signed veteran Breno Giacomini but what does it mean for the team in 2017?

It took the Houston Texans some time to sign their first free agent from outside of the organization, but over two months after the opening of free agency, the Texans inked right tackle Breno Giacomini to a deal. Giacomini joins his former coach from the New York Jets, Mike Devlin, in Houston and is the second offensive lineman from the Jets that Devlin has had a hand in bringing to the team. Oday Aboushi was also coached Devlin at the Jets and subsequently claimed by the Texans, and now Giacomini arrives.

With Giacomini’s arrival, what does it mean for the 2017 season?

1. Chris Clark and Giacomini will slug it out in training camp for the starting right tackle position. The Texans way is to create competition and that is exactly how it is setting up for OTAs to training camp. Clark has his issues, but then he put together his best game of the 2016 season by holding Khalil Mack to a game where he was nonexistent in the wild card round of the playoffs, but there has to he a middle ground for Clark. It is possible that the shoulder he had repaired during the off-season could have been a reason for his struggles. As for Giacomini, he missed majority of the 2016 season with a herniated disc in his back, limiting him to only five games. The recovery from his back surgery took four months, putting him on track to be fully cleared when the Texans take the field for OTAs.

2. Giacomini has to show he can come back from his back injury and has mentioned to New York media that the reason he went for the surgery late last season was to give himself enough time to get ready for the upcoming season. He intended to go back to the Jets but was a cap casualty. With the out of control offensive line market, the Texans waited for the dust to settle before bringing him in. However, given that it is now mid-May and Giacomini is still available is a reason to temper expectations for the time being.

3. The Texans usually take four offensive tackles to the 53-man roster and that means Duane Brown, Chris Clark and Julién Davenport appear to be in good position to be on the roster, while Giacomini will have to hit the ground running in the spring and catch up to what the Texans are doing. Sights fall on Kendall Lamm to step up his game and make a jump entering year three but Giacomini has to show that he can handle what the Texans are giving him offensively. The Texans have made a living under Bill O’Brien bringing in seasoned veterans only to cut them loose when rosters are set during training camp.

4. More than anything, this a firm reminder of how important Derek Newton was to the Texans offense and, despite his issues, was one of the better right tackles in the league. The loss of Newton also means that the Texans will remain vigilant in upcoming drafts and free agency to find a stronger option at right tackle for the long haul to hopefully pair with Davenport for the future.

I was curious about hearing somewhere that Camiel was a participant yesterday? (Edit: Looks like that was probably faulty info) I therefore looked up the designation (see article below), which still leaves me confused. Did he return within the 5 day designation or did not and is now designated as a reserve/left squad designation which will allow him to practice with the team but not play for the Texans or any other team in a regular season game until next season?

According to your linked reference, Camiel can't practice with the Texans.

A player who is placed on Reserve/Left Squad shall remain on the Reserve List of his club for the remainder of the regular season and postseason and shall not be eligible to be reinstated to the Active List of the club or any other club until the year following the season in which he was placed in such category. He is ineligible to play, practice, or attend meetings of his club or any club in the League or to use the facilities of his club or any other club in any manner whatsoever for the remainder of the regular season and postseason. Reads like punishing him for taking $10,000 and trying to quit on the Texans. Let's see $10,000 for year unable to earn either half million for making the squad or 100,000 for the practice squad. Dude may need to take some math classes while he is out the NFL for 2017-18.

My confusion rests on the designation is spoken in terms of leaving and not showing up for TC..........not directly leaving OTAs without permission.

If a player leaves his club without permission or fails to report to training camp at the specified time, the club is required to notify the League office of such fact via the NFL Waivers account, on the same day or, if it is not a business day of the League, on the next business day thereafter.

Cole is a little tightly bound with average flexibility and agility, but he has an explosive burst to the ball when he's able to play downhill. He could compete for a backup job at inside linebacker and turn some heads as a special-teamer.
