Under the radar prospects 2023

Spend a late rd pick on a guy like Bennett or Hall to provide competition for Mills. Don't spend a top 100 pick. Then draft your franchise QB in 2024.

To continue our convo...😉
Say we take Stroud, there are lots of options considering our 12 picks.
What's to stop us taking an insurance QB lower down? Like the guys you mentioned or even O'Connell or Haener?
And if we suck this season and pick top 5 2024, what's to stop us taking another (better?) QB then? We will still have 2 1sts to play with with potential to add 2025 pick. Should still net us a top 2 QB.

Competition for Mills? Those guys aren’t good enough to compete with Mills- and I’m not particularly high on Mills. And it’s not even like Mills is old- he’s younger than Bennett and Hall, and less than a year older than Haener- if those guys are still developing, Mills is still developing.

Correct, Mills is still developing, even though his development has been stunted by the lack of talent around him. IMHO

Tell me what the difference is between Young and Bennett? Bennett is small and processes well., he's got a stronger arm than Young and has about the same ability to move around the pocket/scramble. He's accurate and throws with anticipation. What's the difference between the 2 except media hype and rings?

I’d take a flier on Bennet in the later rounds if he was available.

Stats aside, Bryce showed something this year in carrying that Tide offense and Bennett never did that at Georgia. I think their floor could be equal but Young's ceiling is higher. I'm not holding the PI against Bennett's character, it's probably an isolated event. I hope they both have good NFL careers.

The difference is Young is a better QB. He throws the ball better under game conditions (I really didn't have you pegged as someone who values the sterile combine environment over actual game tape- you must love AR15 then)- his placement is better, he sets his receivers up for success more, I think.

I also do hold the public intoxication against him- he's in basically the biggest interview period of his life, and he can't keep it together for a couple of months? At 25 years old (well beyond the old "he's just a kid" excuse)? Add in a coach reportedly saying "You see bad body language. He has a super-high opinion of himself. He's talented, but is he going to be one of those dudes that sits behind just thinking he's better than everyone else?"

And then there is the arrest video. I don't know about you, but I'm not wild about a guy who is absolutely committing a crime blaming the cops who are apprehending him for ruining his reputation- nah, son, you are doing that yourself.

His apology tracks with the coach report on him having a high opinion of himself- "You can't do that if your last name is Bennett". Who says things like that?

There are several the Texans should study - Stetson Bennett, Clayton Tune, Max Duggan, Jake Haener, Jaren Hall and especially Aiden O'Connell.
There is not a single guy you listed there who projects as a starting QB or even a guy with interesting physical skills to potentially develop into one. The Texans don't need a ho-hum backup/spot starter, they need their QB1.

What is it you anti-Young/Stroud/Richardson crowd keeps saying? Something like "don't just draft a QB just because you feel like you need a QB"? Well, take that advice here. If you are going to make the big boy move and pass on one of the QBs at the top, don't try to hedge your bets by drafting a JAG later.

I'm talking about his game play and talent level He plays big in big games and has just as much natural ability as Young. IMHO

I don't care at all about the last part of your post. Same with Carter.

You feel differently about Haener and Bennett than we do. Competition is a good thing and if Young's 1-2 then these guys have a chance to win the starting QB job.

Backups and camp arms are always needed but no need to spend draft capital but maybe very late you can find another Purdy

I'm not advocating don't take a QB in the first. (See my sig.)
I am saying we should take another one of the lower guys - you may unearth a gem, or a solid backup or #3.
Rookie contracts are valuable.
