Under the radar prospects 2023

Texansphan

Football connoisseur
Every year us armchair GMs hunt for the best prospects in the lower rounds.
Sometimes we refer to them as late round gems or diamonds.
So far, most of us have only gotten down 3 or 4 rounds because of time constraints or laziness 😅
So I thought a thread to highlight guys you have discovered would be a great idea.
I found an article, but your nominations don't have to be articles or links.

Post 'em up!

Dylan Horton is going to kill it at the combine and I bet he has a long career.

Takee Spears

Robert Beal

Chase Brown's lesser known brother Sydney who may be even better as a DB:

Brenton Cox Jr. (OLB/DE) Florida

He's an incredible athlete, but has been kicked off two teams (Georgia & Florida) for disciplinary reasons. As a result, his draft stock is expected to drop. A team with a strong locker room could get a steal on the 3rd day of the draft.

Jacob Slade Michigan.
Has good size and very good upside.
Some good coaching should bring the best out of him.
Use a couple of 6th rounders to move up and make sure you get him.
I had a good sense about DJ Reader (5th round) and this guy could be as good.
Did I use the word good too much here?😜

I didn't catch this game until the 4th quarter. But I did see a couple of D-linemen with NFL size and movement skills. Arizona's Jalen Harris and Brevin Allen from small school Campbell. Couple of guys with traits to look for in the late rounds.

Roschon Johnson. Played behind Bijon Robinson so he has a lot of tread left on the tires. He can do it all.

(3) Roschon Johnson 🔥 Backup RB Highlights ᴴᴰ - YouTube
Have to admit, I haven't seen any film on him. I know these are just highlights, but it gives you a taste of what he is capable of.
I like his ability to make a man miss, his vision, patience and his toughness to bring down.
If defenders dive at his thighs he hurdles them with ease. And he can catch.
I'm buyin'!

He got through a lot of weak tackling attempts there - the tackling will be better in the NFL but he still looks decent, seems to have vision and patience to not run into the ruck and can catch.
Another check mark back.
It's hard to tackle what you cant catch. Make no mistake though, despite only weighing 185-190 lbs, he runs very hard. Good thing is he's got great hands so you can use him as a WR/KR/PR. A true threat to score everytime he touches the ball. Think Hill, I've got him in the mid 2nd/early 3rd.

no telling what his stats would have been had he been on a decent team…

Thinking Nose Tackle?
This dude could be very good.
Exceptional run stuffer with enough power to create havoc pushing centers back to the QB - his wrestling prowess gives him an understanding of leverage.
Not perfect, but can learn from the pros.
Projects similarly to DJ Reader.

My late round guys so far are RB Roschon Johnson, RB Kendre Miller, RB Travis Dye, QB Jake Haener, QB, Clayton Tune. These are all guys that could drop to the 5th round.

Someone mentioned WR Rashee Rice above, but I think he goes mid 2nd round or higher. RB Achane could drop to the 4th round. The way most of the draft sims are running, QB Hendon Hooker has been dropping to the 4th round. Since I'm not high on any of the QB's expected to go in the 1st round, I might think about Hooker in the 4th if he's there, but I think I like Haener better.

Might want to include CB- Riley Moss (Iowa) as one of those targets in RD4 or later.

After Achane runs at the combine, I bet he goes late 2nd/early 3rd. I would be so happy if Hyatt fell to 2-33 like some here think will happen (Doubtful) and Achane falls to the top of the 3rd.

Imagine a world where the Texans draft looks like this?

1-2 Anderson
1-12 Drew Sanders (trading down if possible)
2-33 Hyatt
3-65 Achane
3-75 Stromberg
4-103 Benton

Who's tickling the center's butt ?

I haven't really looked at CB's much yet, other than a few of the top guys. I'll start looking at more players after we get our HC, and find out what schemes the OC and DC like to use.

I'm thinking if Moss is there at the top of the 5th I would pick him and move him to safety. He's got CB skills but tackles very well and it should make for an easy transition to safety.

Achane for a track athlete is a rarity, he is also really good at football. As you said, runs much harder than you would expect. I have many mocks pushing RB's down, so I would wait and try to snag in the third. His hands and route running would allow him to be a RB or slot and maybe cause some matchup issues in a hurry up. I suspect he may be the fastest RB at the combine, and that would be sweet to pair with DP. In any case, I want a RB this year, but would probably fill other positions until at least the third.

If Achane falls to the 2-57 to 3-64 range I would trade up and get him.

Imagine having world class speed of Hyatt/Achane on the same offense, with Pierce in the backfield. Big plays waiting to happen and very Chiefs like.

I do think that Moss will need to be moved to FS in the NFL. As far as the Texans are concerned, I'm looking for a bigger safety like Skinner from Boise State or Battle from Alabama. Christian Young, Arizona SS out of the Richmond area could be a late round sleeper.

Difference is to get those guys you'll probably have to spend a 2nd or 3rd rd pick.

With all of the other holes on team I would rather get Moss in the 5th.
