Two Weeks To Showtime Texans Mock Draft

First let me say I expect Texans/Rick Smith to be building trading relationships as I speak. So expect more than one trade, at least one back from #1 & one up into first or second round. Everyone has read some crazy, speculation regarding Texans and or other teams making moves to acquire "their guy" this is a risk/reward move that would net Texans an additional first round pick in 2015 swapping #1 of #13 plus a second 2014. This is a trade down TEXAN MOCK DRAFT with Jeff Fisher St. Louis Rams. They draft both JaDeveon Clowney & Greg Robinson (or power to tender own trade down offers). Here you are, for entertainment purposes only!

1.13 Johnny Manziel, QB, Texas A&M, 5116 207
Bde5OT8IQAEhK9T.jpg

Simply put he is the franchise QB Texans have been looking for who will not crumble under pressure situations or throw games away. Uses moxie, competitive nature, ability to relate with fellow athletes, Completed 73% of his passes, prolific but needs a strong running game for balance. In Bill O'Brian structured defense & ability to develop young QB's my money is on both creating more than sum of each individually, creating a buzz in Houston that excites fans, turns Texans into a winner seemingly overnight & fill NRG.

2.33 Deone Bucannon, SS, Washington State, 6010 211
7624908.jpg

Impressive athletic safety who can play center fielder or crash the box (led Pac-12 in tackles 114). Fluid, smooth hips, core strength, starter next to FS Swearinger. Like QB, Deone finally gives Texans are truly elite safety prospect to solidify porous secondary. His nickname is Sultan of Swat.

2.44 Joel Bitonio, OT/OG, Nevada, 6042 302
Joel-Bitonio.jpg

Versatile offensive linemen who's calling card is competitive fire, mean streak, Johnny Football protector either RT or OG who is quicker than fast but moves well in space (something Matthews did for Johnny @ A&M both LT & RT) so consider this a QB/OT fit.

3.1 DaQuan Jones, DT, Penn State, 6036 322
999463_10152513176285663_883944847_n.jpg

IF O'Brian loves his former player like think he does plus fills a huge starting hole in the middle of Crennel defense then if here I think he's a smart pick. He is obviously well coached, competitive, consistent & able to handle workload as rookie. Bends & plays with leverage, doesn't hurt to upgrade position next to Watt.

4.1 Arthur Lynch, TE, Georgia, 6045 258
20121117_ajw_sz2_501.0_standard_352.0.jpg

Bigger, stronger version of Owen Daniels. Equally smart, productive, good/willing blocker, solid teammate & competitive. Would be outlet for Manziel, another team captain who was one of Aaron Murrays favorite & most reliable targets.

4.35 Christian Jones, ILB, Florida State, 6031 240
Crennel likes big inside LB's & Chrstian fills the bill with thumper like game three down LB who can also play special teams. Fluid movements, speed, long arms & big hands would be nice compliment to Cushing, can take care of his assignments/business.

5.1 DeVonta Freeman, RB, Florida State, 5082 174
8079536.jpg

Need a stable of running backs to fill behind Foster, but Devonta is not just a change of pace back he is a weapon out of the backfield receiving. Like Bitonio (fit w/Manziel) they could become a dangerous duo as supplement to running game. Guess I might suggest a comparison to Darren Sproles, thick lower body, explosive seems to have a second gear, plus hands.

6.1 Zach Kerr, NT, Deleware, 6013 326
Last year I picked Chris Jones little known out of Bowling Green, Texans cut him & he was picked up by New England. Zach actually started his College career @ Maryland which is know for a very solid strength program. He is more interior wide body with exceptional quickness. Really plus measureables across the board, two year starter best in "O" technique. See him playing nose in nickle while Jones kicks to DE. 57 tackles, 8 for loss & 3.5 sacks.

6.35 Ben Gardner, DE/DT, Stanford, 6040 275
Stock dropped because of injury (would also like Brandon Thomas here for similar reason). Smart, relentless competitor to develop/rehab as 5-tech DE. Have some depth with Crick & Jamison so can be patient & let him fully recover, could be this years candidate for IR? Why would I do that? Because if healthy he would be in consideration 3rd rd. (like BT) cannot stay blocked tweener who fits locker room.

7.1 Jeremy Gallon, WR/RET, Michigan, 5074 185
Has ability to separate from defender in space which translates into the slot & as punt returner. Solid build, ran sub 4.5 forty sudden, quick than fast but excellent large hands, dependable will not fumble or turnover rock just a solid football player with passion for the game. Runs very precise, sharp & flawless routes, quick hitches again for Manziel to hit which will be his strength.

Mr. Irrelevant - Richie Leone, Houston, Punter/Kick-offs, 5100 202
Lechler could teach younger kicker trade before moving on, either because of age or cap casualty. Leone can also take off pressure from Bullock on kick-offs keeping him focused on field goal accuracy & leg health giving Texans two solid young, cheap kickers. Who knows could be just about anybody, never knows who drops this far but kicker does make a lot of sense here plus like local tie in.

Have fun ripping this one apart we have only two weeks plus a few hours, feedback appreciated!

I like your trade down idea. Dropping to 13 is pretty aggresive. With all the ESPN hype, I'll be surprised if Manziel is still there at 13. I'm not a fan of Manziel & might possibly destroy my TV if they select him, but it's hard to dismiss his confidence. I really like the rest of your draft, especially the Gardner selection. Getting him at 6.35 would be the steal of the draft.

Is Gardner ready to play? We need a replacement for Ninja to start and that could be Crick but I expect RAC to want a bigger guy than Gardner. Also, we have three 6ths IIRC our own, MS trade and a comp. You could go Brandon Thomas there.

Thanks!!!

Had to make a stand on one of the three & feel confident Manziel can step into that role with help from O'Brian.

Gardner is a project & doing well with his rehab. This is not a deep position in this draft just because of need don't feel Texans will force a pick early with Crick & Jamison in house. Really like his tenacity, being a tweener & in rehab he has a chance to mold his body into whatever role Texans fell is best for him & team. Could also stand-up & play OLB has the motor & quickness for it! Buy low sell high kind of pick plus not someone we discussed :)
Thanks for input BB!!!

I look with interest and appreciation at your mocks and your posts in general B-L, but I just don't see Manziel as being the kind of QB who O'Brien is looking for, but you obviously do ?

O'Brian seems like he can work with all types & kinds but the one thing above all else with his job on the line is getting a true leader for his offense who is not intimidated by the big stage or task @ hand. Over-achiever not just @ QB but every position. When he falls becuase he will that chip on his should will already have marked at least 12 other teams as potential whipping posts. I really like his odds to suceed, plus endoresed by Roger Stuabach doesn't hurt either :cowboy1:

I really like your mock. I don't know most of these guys, but I like your descriptions. A versatile safety to go with DjSwag, an OL who can fill in at OT/OG.... depending on where Quessenberry ends up I imagine. Da'Quan Jones... I'm not big on the fat NT guy, but I like where you got him & I like the familiarity with OB, a lot of good stuff in this draft (love the TE from Georgia).....

I'm not crazy about the 1st pick. I could live with it (wouldn't be able to live with my wife, she'll be unbearable), but I agree, 13 is a long way down. What's your contingency plan in the event none of the three QBs are there?

bpa. on board would take Donald before the Cowboys pick. maybe they make a trade offer too? then look @ ILB Mosley. would use trade down aquired to take QB or use a 3rd probably on McCaron or Mettenberger.

This time two weeks from now we will either be talking about the newest Texan (loving/hating/going along with it) or waiting an hour or two to find out who they select after trading down. :swatter:

If Manziel not there, Donald, Barr or Mosley would be awesome knowing they can get Garoppolo or maybe even TB #33.

love this draft!!!! strengths the trenches to an advantage of this team.
Im still unsure about manziel so if we did take him i wouldnt be disappointed.

only thing is missing is that premium pass rusher. what was your thinking on not taking one?

To me,Bucannon is the best safety in the draft. He's the only guy who can play hash, box,or man to man. If he were on tv more or played in sec,he would go probably top 10. I know he's the best safety in draft.

L. Manziel- Like the pick, don't love the pick.
2. Buchanon- He's better than Swearinger, but their games are a lot alike. Give me Roby/Bitonio here.
2. Bitonio-Love this pick. One of my favorite OL inthis draft. Brings much needed toughness to the trenches. I would pick him at 33.
3.D. Jones- really like him as a player, he will be more effective as a 5 tech.
4. Lynch- Redundant to Griffin, Give me a more athletic guy that can stretch the seam like A.C. Leonard.
4. C. Jones- Great pick, the kinda of versatile ILB/OLB that is a perfect fit next to Cush.
5. Freeman- Great pick and has the perfect skill set for what BOB described as a 3rd down RB. Small but tough, runs hard, great hands. Severely underrated in the media mockers minds.
6. Kerr- cant have enough wide bodies. Kerr would provide a good tag team partner for Powe. Finally interior depth.
6. Gardner- Great pick if healthy, great intensity, has a chance to be better than Crick. Brings toughness
7. Gallon, love this pick. Perfect slot WR, reminds me of Welker, great hands , has speed and gets in and out of his breaks quickly. Better yet he makes Martin expendable if Martin doesn't step up his game.
7. Leone- pass on a P/K, give me some more OL depth like Patchan or Graf.

Although I'm not high on Manziel this draft prvides the one thing the Texans have been severely lacking, (Toughness) Great job.

Thanks for your outstanding feedback SB!!!

Guess I need to clarify role & better explain why Bucannon so high. First rd. grade, yes. He is higher on my board than Pryor or Ha Ha. I should have also identified him as Texan starting FS. Move Swearinger (who I had a 3rd rd. grade last draft) to SS to compliment his strength in the box. They would compliment one another (probably what you meant) just that Bucannon has far higher ceiling & better more rounded NFL prototype. Swearinger had a fine career in South Carolina with 244 tackles & 6 picks but Bucannon had 6 picks just his senior season alone totally 15 for his career & 382 tackles. He is also a terror off the edge in blitz formations, forced 7 fumbles earning nickname Sulton of Swat for reason. I would not be surprised at all if he is the first safety off the board in the first round, I'm thinking Baltimore? Anyway just one of my dreams (Ed Reed was a muse) to have a pro bowl FS, Texan secondary badly needs one & would not isolate Swearinger in mismatches he cannot win because of his smaller size, slower long speed & limited coverage range. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57mWwzhwbFo

To me,Bucannon is the best safety in the draft. He's the only guy who can play hash, box,or man to man. If he were on tv more or played in sec,he would go probably top 10. I know he's the best safety in draft.

MSR

Been saying this for months. If you've studied him then I can't see how you don't have a 1st round grade on him. Yet, all these draft experts on TV have him going in the 3rd round. We'll see..

Thought I was being aggressive making the trade expecting Manziel to fall but even more hopeful that Bucannan lasts until 2nd. Difference being, have a plan if Manziel is off the board but not so much for Bucannon once off the board nobody to replace him. FS has been a quandray for me since beginning of Texan Football, sure would be nice to finally get one who measures up :swatter:

Make that 3 of us. I've been saying all offseason that he's easily the best Safety not named Clinton-Dix and that I think he's better than HCD too. Best Safety in the draft, IMO.

How about flip-flopping 1 & 2? Take Clinton-Dix in the first & a QB in the second?
