Turn to ESPN right now: 1st and 10 to discuss Carr extension

GP

Go Texans!
Turn to ESPN cable channel now 2:49 p.m. to see discussion on extension and its possible implications.

Skip Bayless thinks McNair granted Kubiak and Reeves' decision to retain Carr, but that McNair will supposedly pressure Reeves and Kubiak to trade Carr and draft Vince Young. Bayless says he has Texans sources who claim Carr has "zero" leadership skills, and that Young is a natural leader. Bayless also says several NFL sources agree that Carr will never be more than a "pretty good" NFL QB.

Woody Paige counters by saying that the Texans will draft Bush. Paige says that McNair will rely on his talent evaluators (Kubiak and Reeves) who have recommended to retain Carr. Paige says the Denver o line has always been undersized, and that Kubiak and "the new o line coach and assistant coach" will improve that team with different blocking schemes, and that Kubiak wants a loaded backfield with Bush on board (as I have stated over and over, by the way). Paige ends it by saying that Bush is a quicker "get better" solution than going with Vince Young. He says he understands "why" Houston would get want to get Vince Young, but he believes Bush is the more stable route to go.

Let the mud slinging begin...

So they both read this board, flipped a coin to take one side or the other, and repeated what has been said here countless times?

Skip Clueless has inside sources with the Texans?!

Fire those sources! Not for giving out information, but for giving out information to Skip!! :dangit:

Mr. McNair has said time and time again that he hires the professionals and lets them do their jobs. I just don't see him being the puppetmaster that so many folks seem to portray. I'm sure he will part of the decision making process about our no. 1 pick, but I just can't fathom that he's basing his coaching decisions on keeping one freakin' player.

Bayless needs to stay on his gig with "Old Pizza". His usefulness on ESPN is marginal, at best (and I enjoy him as an entertainer, but his analytical skills have little to be desired, IMO).

Sice when did anybody take what thsoe two yahoo's said seriously. I mean c'mon Skip and Woody are more about the E in ESPN not the N.

Toss the janitorial staff. Someone has been spilling closely guarded secrets ... :spy: Seriously though, I think Skip and Miss Cleo are working together ...

I did not hear the interview, but I have heard Bayless and Paige and it usually sound something like this:

Bayless: Quack! Quack! Quack!

Paige: Caaaaawww! Caaaaaaw! Caaaaaaaw!

Tools should be kept in the toolbox.

I dislike Skip Bayless more than any other guy on ESPN. The guy's about as cocky as TO and half the time knows nothing about sports. I don't like Woody Paige either which is why I don't watch 1st and 10. Whatever Skip Bayless says is usually a bunch of cow poop.

I also forgot to comment on this. There aren't many "elite" QB's in the NFL. Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Carson Palmer. There are plenty of "pretty good" QB's in the NFL. David Carr turning into a pretty good QB wouldn't bother me one bit. It's not like it's a sure thing Vince Young will be an automatic Hall of Famer.

I believe it could be used in that form. I think I will need a judge's ruling.

I believe the original Portuguese dialect used the shortened version of the Latin form of Caaaawraaap. Being frugal with their words...the Portuguese Monks dropped the ending off the word thus giving us our current term Ca Ca.

It was just on "Around the Horn" in the "buy or sell" portion of the show.

1 guy sold.. and his arguement wasnt very good either :P..basicly he said that the team has only won 16 games under Carr so why keep him.

the other three guys bought.. and they brought up the usual arguements.. lack of a line... completed over 60% of his passes. They also said that Kubiak is the perfect Coach to have for Carr and that Kubiak will make him a good QB.

funny: Woody Paige had a little chalkboard behind him with a picture drawn of Oswald the Rabbit on it :)

Don't forget Drew Brees, not too long ago he was about to get ran out of town and S.D. even drafted Rivers. And the Brees turned it around and went to a Pro Bowl. Just sayin', it's possible.

But which one is going to be Tails or A--.

What the heck do these guys know? They know nothing that they did not read on this board.
:homer:

I cannot believe that I am going to advocate for Woody Paige. However, Paige did cover the Broncos in Denver for 20+ years, he has a relationship with Kubiak and Reeves. I can tell you he has a great deal more sources inside the Texans organization then Bayless.

Bayless has been a Carr hater for a while. However, if Carr is a "pretty good" quarterback with Bush, DD, and AJ - I will take this. Big Ben and Matt Hasslebeck are "pretty good" quarterbacks who just finished playing in the super bowl. It is not about who is going to be the best individual talent, but what pick will maximizes the value to the TEAM.

I agree with one thing Bayless said, Carr has very little leadership skills. He has to stop going home to his wife at least once a month to hang with the fellas. He needs to take the big uglies out to eat after every win. If the Texans give up less than 35 sacks this year, he need to buy every lineman a rolex, etc.

Well it said in Sports Illustrated than Carr got all his lineman paint ball guns. I think it's tradition for QB's to get their O-line something, or that's the way SI portrayed it. I don't know how much of a buddy Carr is with any of his teammates but I don't think he's a total loner.

LOL, Skip Bayless is clueless. If there's anyone still unreasonably clinging to David Carr, it's McNair.

Skip's argument was so ridiculous.

He said that McNair doesn't want Carr but Casserly, Reeves, and Kubiak do, so he gave him an extension anyway?

I'm sorry but if McNair didn't want Carr than Carr wouldn't have been extended 3 years.

How can we, as fans, take anything these two say seriously. Skip Clueless (I love that) are Woody Paige are the two most sued sports writers because of libel. They just yammer to hear themselves talk, not because they have anything of relevance to say.

There's the part that gets me. If Cass, Reeves, and Kubiak all wanted Carr, then why did he bring them aboard?

It might have something to do with the fact that he is an oil man who happens to own a football team, and he is leaving the football decisions to professionals. Surrounding yourself with people who are smarter than yourself will make you look like a genius when your team does well. I'd rather not have something like Dallas where the owner makes personell decisions.

It got even better about two minutes after the Carr discussion. The very next ESPN program was NFL Live with Wingo/Schlereth/Salisbury.

Wingo: I guess we figured out whether Houston is going QB or RB in the draft, huh?

Schlereth: Yup. I think it's a smart move because Carr even at his worst will be further ahead of Vince Young even as talented as Vince is...Regie gives them the ability to get better NOW.

Salisbury: And I'll tell you what: You can do a lot worse than Reggie Bush, who is the (fill in the blank with whatever out-of-this-world comment you could throw out about Reggie). And Carr might even be headed to the Pro Bowl in a year or two. (And I am NOT paraphrasing that last sentence.).

Sidenote: Schlereth played most of his career in Denver (Kubiakville) and Salisbury is such a USC homer that he'd probably even promote us taking OJ Simpson if we could.

But alas, all these guys are in the spotlight with the mic, and we're not. Regardless of their opinions, McNair is going to rely on his evaluators. Otherwise, he would have canned Casserly, and he wouldn't have even bothered to pick up Reeves...especially knowing his ties to Denver and Kubiak if Kubiak wasn't a guy McNair would be satisfied with.

McNair, IMO, picked Reeves on purpose to solidify his own idea that Kubiak (who interviewed for the HC job five years ago) is the guy we need.

It'll be Bush or trade down. Heck, I'm good with either of those decisions.

That's what I'm saying. McNair has to have a little input into the game and his players, but for the most part, he does leave it up to the professionals. But Skip said that McNair didn't want Carr. So what I was trying to say that if McNair wanted VY, but Cass, Kubiak, and Reeves want Carr, then why would he have brought them onto the team. McNair does do a good job at letting football people make football decisions, but McNair also has to agree with those decisions to an extent. He does sign the checks.

I'm just thinking that even if he likes Vince Young, which countless people who don't want to draft him still like the fellow, he wants decisions made that are best for the team. This is an investment that he hopes will survive in the long haul, and the best way to do that is to win. Therefore he probably hires people who know the game inside and out, including the cap. I only know a little bit about football compared to these guys. If I owned a team, I would want to hire people who could take what is available, and mold it into a winning team ASAP. How many Super Bowls have the guys that actually make decisions been to? Yeah, I trust their opinion above my own.

The other thing that was funny about the Skip-Woody debate was the following conversation:

Skip: Sources inside the Texans tell me that Carr has absolutely no leadership skills.

Woody: You don't need QB's to be leaders of the team. Aikman wasn't a great leader.

Skip: Yeah, but Aikman had other leaders on the team.

Exactly Skip, if you have other leaders on the team, you don't necessarily have to have the QB as your leader.

Becarefull what you agree to... I waited on 7 of our offensive linemen a year ago... they racked up a $2,500 bill in no time.

I think they are both a joke and have no reliability but I think his point was that is Carr isn't the leader then who is?Who can you point to?So leaderless.

I'm trying to recall a comment made last training camp. I think it was Victor Riley. He said if they could each give up no more than 1-2 sacks a game they would be in great shape. At the time, I figured he meant as a unit. Looking back, maybe he did mean each man gives up a sack a game. That comes out to 80 a year. Someone didn't do their job.

It was kinnda funny... the meal went fine. They had a little private room to themselves so no one would interupt them while they were eating. Once the meal was over there was a big discussion on who was picking up the bill. It seemed to me like Aaron Glenn (the only person not over 250 lbs in the group) was the designated bill payer. For some reason he couldnt pay so Billy Miller ended up fitting the bill. Left me 20%. Even though I had my fingers crossed for some outrageous tip (with them being multimillionairs and me being a struggling college kid) but no waiter should ever complain about gettin 20%, especially on a bill that high.

It was Riley. He said something like "if you only give up 20 sacks it is a successful year". It's still a mystery to what he meant....

If I was coach I may have asked for some clarification. :)

"I think they are both a joke and have no reliability but I think his point was that is Carr isn't the leader then who is?Who can you point to?So leaderless." -- houstonfrog

Not to go to bat for those two guys, because I definitely do not enjoy Bayless to tell you the truth, but I get pretty fed up with you guys bashing EVERY talking head. I mean, they are getting paid big bucks to do what they do, and I doubt some TV exec is going to pay them to do what they do if they are as "bad" as you all make 'em out to be.

Some times me just thinks that you guys bash the talking heads because you think your opinions and analysis is soooooooooo much better.

Anyways, if I had a nickel for every time I shared commentary from guys like Bayless or Paige or any other show that I watch so we don't have to suffer through poster-initiated threads such as "What if Bo Jackson came back and played for us, and we had Mike Ditka as coach?" I would be rich by now.

Can some of you go out and gather Texans-related media talk so we can at least discuss the Texans as the rest of the sports world is discussing us...instead of just living in our own little message board bubble? And even if it requires suffering through someone you don't appreciate (Bayless for me), you could at least have SOMETHING to respond with in regards to what they say instead of the old stand-by "That guy is a clown." comment.

Oh, but I forgot...we have sooooo many aspiring football analysts here who can do sooooo much better than the media veterans. Why look any place else, huh?

Sorry, I am just sick and tired of the lame poster-initiated threads that I have been seeing here lately that have less to do with relevant sports talk and more to do with people's lame fantasies and "predictions." Some of you throw your two cents in, but a lot of you just slam someone and don't bring anything to the table. I can not come here for three days, and I haven't missed anything because so few are going out and grabbing Texans-related media that we can discuss. I would have to commend Texan84 because he's a poster that I think works hard to bring Texans-related articles and media to the table at this board on a consistent basis. After that, it's pretty far and few between.

Sorry I'm a little cranky about this topic.

Football fans and media throughout the country do not see controversy that we see in Houston. I recently traveled to several cities with large NFL markets and listened to their radio shows. Everyone sees that there is a big uproar here to take Young NO ONE thinks it is the right move. A friend of mine that is involved in sports media in Chicago asked about the situation. I explained that he is a special player, a hometown boy and he has "It". He said "Two Points"(with his DA- BEARS accent) "If he is so great for Houston why does the rest of the country have him rated second at his position, if you feel you need a Quarterback, get Leinart. Over the course of his career he has had more "It" than Young and suits the Pro system better. As far a hometown boy, a few years ago I was watching the Detroit media blasting the Lions to take Charles Rogers because he was a sure bet hometown boy." Posted this for what it is worth.

Sounds like you have some really smart friends. For some reason, if you don't have Vince-goggles on and live in Houston, most people see that Carr has the ability to be a solid QB in the NFL, and can perform, when given the time.
