Training Camp Tidbit

Did you know...

Kubiak has a rule. If a player has 9 years in the NFL - is going into his 10th full season - then that player does not have to do two-a-days. The player does the morning session but sits out the afternoon. I don't know if they have the option of doing the opposite. This includes Payne, Weigert, Bruener, Moulds...who am I missing?

I think a 10 year vet has the football knowledge to be able to keep up mentally, and this practice certainly saves wear and tear on their aging bodies.

We've got a players' coach, in case anyone was wondering.

Good point, and you're right as always.

In my book, getting the coach on your side is half the victory!

Missing
- Flanagan 11yrs
- Hape 10yrs
- Cowart 9yrs
- Kalu 10yrs
- Smith, A. 10yrs
- Simmons, J. 9yrs
- Wong 9yrs

I think that's the rest of them.

I think it's a good idea to let the older players have off the 2nd practice of 2-a-days. Like you said, it will keep the older guys a little fresher and not wear them out, but also, it will give the younger guys more time on the field. Also, I can't imagine some of these older players being in the NFL (let alone on this team) in 2 to 3 years down the road. So, the more reps the younger players get now,(yes I know it's only TC) the better off they will be when it comes time to replace some of the older players.

I may be wrong on this but I'm thinking I read somewhere that-during the season-Kubiak does non-contact walk thrus of that weeks game plan--I believe Capers did full contact. Too, Pitts commented that even if they finished something 'early,' Capers made the players stay for the entire allotted time--Kubiak does not. This is a 'refreshing' attitude and saves unnecessary wear and tear on the players plus rewards them for finishing early...We've talked about Caper's 'mouth open look' and 'execute' but what about his famous pad and pencil in hand at all times? Is that history?

That training mentality was used up in Denver. Once the season gets going the practices will surprise you at how 'soft' they look. Only if the team has been playing sloppy....tackling, fumbling, etc., will they do a bunch of contact.

Welcome to the world or finesse football but featuring a power running game...go figure. Players will love it and injuries go way down in practice.

I would think training camp is gonna be full go, commando style violence... ... due to the level of competition at so many positions.

j/k kidding about that commando comment but it will be very, very aggressive.

I heard the same about finishing meetings and such when the work was done, not by what the clock said, from another player too.

Most sites list players years experience including the current season so Wong, Simmons and Cowart have played 8 seasons and this year will be their 9th.

Letting the older vets have the afternoon off is a brilliant idea. I think it's these little things that are going to pay dividends over the course of this season. Two of our linemen (Flanagan and Weigert) are injury prone, so giving their bodies time to heal will be very beneficial.

I dunno, but is it a good idea when everybody is learning a new system with a
new coaching staff ? Especially the offensive players, many of whom reagardles of their experience may be playing in a WCO for the first time.
And here's another tidbit that 13 reported last night: Kubiak does not do
the TC lockup that Capers and many other NFL coachs practice. The players may go home at night after each practice.
We're already seeing Kubiak with some very different approaches to coaching than his predecessor had. Lets just hope the results produced are also different.

Good point, but I think that there has been a lot of training with OTAs already, and they have the meeting briefings, morning workouts, etc. I see the benefit because this is not for a 3 to 7-year veteran. This is for someone who has been a professional for a long time and who I anticipate can learn the system quicker. However, I also assume that if you have some vet who is riding the pine, he is probably being told that it would be in his best interests to stick around.

The idea, though, that the older vets are receiving less wear and tear on their bodies is a good idea. Too many injuries come out of training camps and pre-seasons, and like I said, we have a few vets who could probably benefit from less wear and tear.

The "lock-up" is optional. The way I understand it is the players could have a hotel room for camp if they wanted one or they could choose to go home at night. I suggested to one of the guys to take the hotel room just to save that commute time every day. He told me that was what he was going to do, and in fact is what he is doing today.

Many camp days consist of nothing more than eat, sleep, meetings, and practice. Therefore, driving time reduces sleep time more or less, and just gives the player one more thing to worry about.

I also think that once the player chooses the hotel, he has to stay there unless the coaches give the team "the night off". The player can't pick and choose which nights to stay at the hotel and which nights to go home.

Once again, Kubiak show he is a players coach by letting them make their own decisions on some of this stuff.

C'mon now Runner, have you seen some of these guys wives ? And I suspect
those who aren't married, with their money, youth, NFL reps, etc., do pretty dang good with the opposite sex. Now where do you think they want to be on a rainey Houston night ? Alone in a hotel room or, well you know ?
But another thing about Kubiaks practices. He does seem to minimize physical contact, and theres divided opinion on that philosophy. Saving on the players
wear & tear is a plus, but the best way to really perfect timing is thru live playing conditions. And that means contact scrimmages.

What is this "players coach" you speak of? As long as they execute, I'm good with whatever. :)

I sort of liked the idea of "lock up" as a teambuilding concept, but I suppose you'd start going crazy after what -- six weeks? -- of it.

Those vets will be doing the full contact stuff once a day, they just get to skip participating in the second. I'm sure they'll be there to watch. It seems like a reasonable compromise to me, especially since I'm sure Kubiak won't hesitate to make a vet do both sessions if he deems it necessary.

Alone? I'm sure they'll have another smelly athlete with them.

Yes I have, but a wise man once told me, "No matter how good looking a woman is, there is always one guy in the world who is tired of her crap".

This may explain the huge amount of injuries this team has suffered.

I've felt in the past that we would lose key players at certain parts of the season to injury and it would prevent us from winning two or three more games.

I don't think the Titans have a guy who is over 6 years in the league other than Kevin Mawae.

Keith Bulluck 7
Craig Hentrich 13
Erron Kinney 7
Kevin Mawae 13
Benji Olsen 9
Zach Pillar 8
Peter Sirmon 7
Billey Volek 7

But the team is very young.

I know you haven't heard this before, but Denver runs their practices and training camp pretty much the same way...

Oh, I almost forgot. I talked to Hape while he was driving from Denver to Houston for TC. We talked about Ryans again (Always talk about BAMA guys). He said he asked the LB coach during mini camp how much he thought DeMeco would play? LB coach said I don't think he will come off the field, with a laugh and smile. He praticed at all 3 postions (WLB/MLB/SLB). Hape's opinion was Will or Weakside LB would be his natural position.

Food for thought...

That's sweet! After hearing coach K on a sound bite from 610 this morning, he sounds really optimistic about him too. I hope he does well. I watched a few Bama games and he did catch my eye several times. I've been pretty stoked about him every since the draft.

P.S. What's the word on the WR Prothro? One of the games I watched was the one Prothro snapped his lower leg in half. He was having an excellent game that day. Will he ever play again?

Just for the record, I will be in the Houston airport today connecting on a flight to Dallas. I will be wearing a blue Titans shirt, will be there around 7PM. If you see me we can fight. bring your whole posse.

Even my 14 year old nephew who likes the Cowboys called me during the draft. He was like "Dude yall got a good player" and I told him to not call me if he was going to be sarcastic like that, thinking he was talking about the fact that we got Williams.

His reply was "You got one of the top 3 LBs in the draft, that guy should not have been there when yall drafted in the second round. You are going to love that dude. You should've seen what he did to Texas Tech alone."

Volek joined the Titans for the '00 season--so he has 6 years completed and is in his 7th year. Bulluck, Kinney and Sirmon were also 2000 draft class.

I read somewhere last weekend (no link) that he's sitting out 2006 as well .....

Man, that's too bad. I hope he can make comeback. He looked like a promising player.:crutch:

From Coach Shula at SEC Media Days yesterday on teh subject:

On the injury front, Shula provided updates on wide receiver Tyrone Prothro (broken leg) and halfback Glen Coffee (sports hernia surgery).

"Does [Prothro] have a ways to go? Yeah, he's still got a ways to go," Shula said. "It's an injury that's going to take a while to heal. Everybody that's had an injury like this responds differently.

"For us to say he's going to be ready next week wouldn't make any sense. For us to say right now he won't be ready until next year; that doesn't make any sense either.

"It's not that we're trying to hide anything. Everything is going well. He's improving every day. That's the thing that I keep seeing, I keep hearing and that makes me feel good about him being back. When is he going to be back? We don't know."

Mark Vandemeer just indicated the rookies have to stay at the hotel and the vets have the option.

Sounds fair. The rookies have no options. The old vets get a break from two-a-days. The regular vets get to make some decisions and work hard.

Sounds like the players are treated with some individuality. In groups.

That's what I like...group individuality. It generally works for me in a specific manner.

Check out the information on the Titan's website. I just glanced at a couple: Volek and Sirmon show as 7 years of exp.

By the way, if you haven't read it yet, your guys are all signed up and ready to rock.

Congratulations! :)
