trading down?

I think the best thing for us to do is to trade down our first and a third to a team like the eagles, who have a low first and high second. that way we could get someone like Shaw Cody from USC and then some one like David Bass or Elton Brown in the second.
 
Wouldn't trade the 3rd away. The value chart--certainly not the gospel but a useful tool--puts our 1st at very close to equal to the Eagles 1st and top 2nd. In the past few years, the trading up team has usually paid a little more than the chart indicates rather than the other way around.
 
Lets be nice and say they have the 29th pick in the first round, and their 33rd pick in the 2nd round. Thats around a 1220 value. 640 from the 29th pick, and 580 from the 2nd round pick. The #13 pick alone is worth around 1150. So thats a big no on dropping a 3rd rounder as well. But all in all we could get a couple of great players.

29th Carlos Rogers, CB, Auburn
33rd Vernand Morency, RB, Oklahoma St.
45th Darnell Bing, S, USC

He changed his mind. Probably because the OSU coach left to become the new LSU coach.
 
We should only trade down if there isn't a top talent LB/o-line/d-line available. Other wise we need to take the best LB/o-line/d-line player we can get at pick 13.
 
unless wright, spears, barron or derrick johnson is on the board. our best choice is to trade down with a team into the early to mid 20s and pic up elton brown or marcus spears, since that is where they are predicted to be drafted.
 
I never did like trading down or up or whatever. I think there are certain guys on the Texans board: Derrick Johson, Carlos Rogers, Jaamal Brown, who they would take if they are avaiable at #13. I think Rogers is a perfect fit at #13. You will here a lot about this guy. Good size, good hands, good closing speed and a leader, sounds like the kind of guy we want. I seriously don't think he will be there at #29. He won't even touch #20. If we can get more picks and good ones, well then I'm for it. But we have to be careful because we don't want to be looking and picking at the bottom of the barral.
 
I like Rogers, was really impressed w/ him in the Auburn game. In '06 we'd have D-Rob and Rogers what a combo. However we run the risk of not filling a more pressing need by taking him @13. I'd love to have him, but we need D/O Line help before CB(remember glenn can still play and Faggins makes plays). I'd be thrilled if Johnson fell to us. I think trading down to 18-20 would be okay if we could pick up an extra 3rd or 4rth, if the talent isn't good enough to fill one of our holes @ pick 13.
 
I think trading down is definatly the way to go.. but id like to see us trade down for a late first rounder, and a first rounder next year. I think we need to try and stock up some draft picks for next years draft.. its looking like alot of the Talent that we were hoping would be in this years, is gonna go to next years instead :P.

Anyway.. if we traded down.. here is another option with our first rounder. Shawne Merriman



Ryan (Pittsburgh): Mel, any chance Shawne Merriman falls to Pittsburgh at the end of the first round? I think he'd be a great fit in the 3-4.

Mel Kiper: Phenomenal fit. There are five teams using a 3-4 scheme and he would be unbelievable in any of them. He had a 41.5 inch vertical jump! He can run a 4.5 40 routinely. In fact, his vertical was the best ever by a DL in Maryland history. He had 17 tackles for loss, 9 sacks and forced 3 fumbles! He is a 4-3 DE or 3-4 OLB .. He is a Peter Boulware type guy. I think he is a mid first rounder.
 
The Texans are going to get some offers both ways, I guess it will depend if their #1 player is still on the board when they select. Let the higher teams make mistakes take players the Texans aren't interested in and stay put. Only if the player they want is gone would they consider tradeing down & addressing needs like DL & OL positions. With all the underclassman declaring, this draft still boasts good value through the 2nd round. A trade down with Jacksonville for instance would buy us an extra 2nd, 3rd and maybe a 4th just like the Titans got last year from the Texans.
 
I have heard a lot about that kid from Maryland, but another former DE transfer to OLB is not what we need. I wonder if the Texans have thought about moving Wong to ILB? Anyways remember we still have one hell of a player in Antwan Peek sitting on the bench.

As for trading our 1st pick away this year for someones next year #1s is too risky. Take the Cowboys for example. They thought Buffalo would be in the Top 5 picking, and their pick is later then their own so that plan backfired.

I was wondering where would Jaamal Brown go, the BIG kid from OU? He is a great tackle and a great athlete for his size. Maybe thats the way to go at #13. If we do trade down, its going to be for a DL, because if we do take an OL in the later rounds, even the 2nd or late 1st, its going to take time for them to develop, and they won't make an immediate impact. If we are going to take an OL is going to be at #13.

I don't think a plant hat get's you the player you want and a first round pick in teh next draft abackfired. As much as I've had it beaten over my head this year here in teh DFW; it was a shrewd move on their part.

Now does it make up for some of their REALLY stupid draft blunders? No, but any objective personcan admit it was a step in the right dircetion. Plus I want to Boys to be thinking Super Bowl in 2006; that way it'll sting just a little more when we beat them, again.
 
Jammal Brown's stock is all dependent on if Ferguson comes out. But at this moment he is projected as a mid round (20s). While he is the most complete OT in the draft, most people done think that he has as much upside as Barron or Ferguson in the pro game. But all these draft gurus have been wrong before (Mandurich) :thud: .
