BPA is a pointless comment. you wanna know who the BPA is? whoever CC feels will be the biggest help to this team. If he thinks that Eric Shelton is a perfect fit for us at RB, and that he will make this team 10 times better.. he could draft him at #13.. call him the BPA.. and say that if we hadnt taken him at #13, someone else would have grabbed him before the second round.
I think the players that will make the biggest impact for us, in the first round, will be OLB, ILB, CB (and im gonna add RB to that cause this is a great draft for RBs)... I feel that the BPA for us, will be someone at one of those positions.

You can predict all day, but the bottom line is Charley knows the team and its needs better than any of us do, so just trust in Casserly and be thankful we have him...

Where people run afoul of understanding BPA is they think it means best generic NFL player available (reflected by some 300 person list from a draft site) and fail to realize it really means best player available as a Texan--i.e. who fits into both the system the team wants to play and the cap management issues that exist. Two teams at the same spot can have completely different BPA's depending on scheme differences such as running a cover 2 vs. man coverage scheme, 4-3 vs. 3-4, west coast offense vs. vertical game, etc. Those kind of scheme differences and a host of different possible cap considerations and philosophies result in widely varying draft boards for the 32 teams. IMO the greatest failing of draft sites and draftniks is acting like they can assemble a big board that every NFL team is operating off of.
Coming at the draft from a needs perspective is bass ackwards. Saying our top need is LT so we should take one in the 1st ignores whether you are picking 1st in the draft or 32nd--it ignores the quality of LT that may be available and it ignores the quality of other players available.
The problem with leaving it simply as "BPA", is that it's still not accurate. BPA indicates that you take the Best Player available (for your team structure) at your assigned draft position. That isn't an all-inclusive of how CC has drafted. Jason Babin anyone?

But "need" is a component of taking the BPA for your system, no? Just as the offensive & defensive schemes a team runs and the talent level of the players drafted. If Aaron Rodgers fits the system the Texans run (I think he does) and his talent is equal or better than players available that play other positions (I think it is), the Texans still will not take him at #13. Why? Because they don't "need" a QB.infantrycak said:

If you're good at RB & weak at WR, you take the WR because the talent difference is minimal if even existant. The difficulty for fans is in determining what a team's needs are. A fan may think that Wand should be replaced, the Texans may be comfortable in his ability to improve. A fan may feel that Peek is the answer for the Texan's need for a pass rusher, the team may think the void is still there.

Need certainly can be a tie breaker or nudge factor. Realistically these guys don't come with a bar code that teams can scan and say --beep this player is the 13th best player in the draft and --beep this player is the 20th best player in the draft. JMO but there is usually a band of players at every draft pick with about equal talent--but right here we have already done the 1st cull bast on talent not need. Throw out the ones who just don't fit the scheme and throw out the ones who don't fit the cap. At that point if there is more than one player still then look at needs but even then with an eye to depth in the draft so if the choice in the 1st comes down to WR & CB but the WR talent in the next round is not near what the talent for CB's and both are also needs then take the WR in the 1st even though CB may be the bigger need because the combo will be better overall.
Sorry that was long-winded and I know you know all that--really just ranting against needs only analysis.
