Too many needs, too few picks.

Get ready for another helping of the same ol' soup.

This D needs an overhaul. 1 draft to find an answer at DT, I & O LB, CB and Safety. And that's only because we generally believe Mario is such a football player that assigning a few letters in front of his name won't matter at all or else DE would be a bigger issue than people are making it.

Generally you can expect the 1st round guy to be a starter, 2nd round might be one too by the end of the year, 3-7 are depth guys and you might get one to explode.

LB seems to be the pick in the 1st because the top flight DT/CBs will be gone and leaving a top flight LBer for a lesser DT/CB...well actually that sounds exactly like something the Texans would do. Hope they don't.

Next, 2nd round you need a guy who can step in the DL or backfield and make a difference soon. Especially the backfield if Quin is moving to safety a year too late. Unless the Texans shock the world and take a first day safety to pair with Quin, I'm expecting another CB.

3rd-5th rounds need to address depth at WR, ILB and DT. Doesn't really matter what order, you just hope one breaks out and the rest can at least fill in as depth chart guys.

6th & 7th guys are pretty much flyer picks and Kubiak's boys. I wouldn't sneeze if Kubiak picked up Jerod Johnson as QB depth and some small school, nobody's ever heard of them safety.

Sounds about right.

I have yet to see Texans play with sense of urgency on or off the field so I'm tempering expectations as well.

Think about their history, look at the situation and tell me we're not about to get another one of these piles. Pretty much a lock that they go OLB 1st round unless miracles happen. This will be the 4th defensive front 7 pick in a 6 year regime. If you wanna throw Demeco in there too that's 5 out of 7 and only 1 has been an offensive selection. 2nd round picks, guys they expect to contribute in some way before they become starters....Barwin, Ben Tate. Weren't expected to start but definitely expected to produce. 3-5 WR, DT, LB depth guys....history says....Jones, Adibi, Okam, Sharpton, Mitchell and if you want to count TE as receivers forget about it. Safety/Kub's Kidz Pickz-Shelley Smith, Nolan, Barber, Studdard, D Anderson.

these aren't coincidences anymore, these are trends. How many 1st round picks will go into the defensive front without it being able to look like a unit full of 1st round picks? How many mid round picks can be used on guys that never reach their potential? How many kidz can Kubz possibly have?

It just disgusts me that the draft is setting up like this again.

I know what you mean. Guess that's why we come here?

Clock is running, only live once, how much suckage can fans take before they drop ground zero? with costs rising pretty soon a levy of goodwill broken, hopes expired a new generation of Hank wanna be's in Cam McNair they trust surely follow :hankpalm:

I agree with Timekiller. It will surely take more than 1 yr. to rebuild this defense and with at least 5 major needs (SS, FS, CB, OLB, and DT) along with minor needs at (ILB depth, OLB depth, WR depth, SS depth, and FS depth) there aren't enough picks in this draft to fix all of our issues. The best we could hope for would be 3 starters from this draft and that's highly unlikely. I also have no confidence in Kubiaks ability to evaluate and draft quality players that will contribute. I also agree with Timekiller that there's no reason to believe that Kubaik will pick anything other than a bunch of new kids and project players. It's depressing to think of all the wasted picks that are yet to come.

Every season i care less and less about this team.

Draft another tight end when we have glaring needs. Anthony Hill in the 3rd round and Garret Graham in the 4th. Puke. Maybe if we'd have drafted a cornerback and a safety...or 2 safetys our secondary would not have been historically bad last year.

If they waste a pick on a tight end this year i will activley root to fire them all!

wer

Agreed

That's why I'm always for packaging lower picks to move into the 2-3 rd. The bust rate is lower and you get to add true quality players.

For instance this yr I would trade a 3rd/4th and a 6th to move back into the 2nd rd.

Then you could draft a Quinn in the 1st rd then come back and take an Aaron Williams and a Davon House in the 2nd rd. You would have 3 talented playmakers added to what is already on the defense. The defense would be much improved. But you have to pay a few more $$$$ to sign a 2nd rd pick. The cost would be off set by not having to pay 3/4th rd picks.

You only do things like this if your GM/HC heads aren't on the chopping block and this is why Gary and Rick will never make a move like this.

I generally do not have expectatations on draft day due to many disappointments and a few bright spots through the draft over the years. Untill Smith and Kubiak set sail into the night and McNair never looks back then I won't have high standards. If they do strike gold then great but there five years of drafts which cause me not to bank on anything different than the norm every year. Hope to be proven wrong this year as always but so far I have always been right about the Texans and how they operate.

Gary, I think there's a difference between high standards and impossibly high standards.

It's rare to get a draft like Kubiak's first draft with Mario, Demeco, Winston, Owen Daniels, and David Anderson all getting picked up and all contributing to the team. Very few teams have had a draft like that in their history. And I think after that draft, a lot of us were expecting that sort of success to continue.

Smithiak hasn't really been that bad at drafting. They haven't been great. They've taken some chances and whiffed on a few guys and some guys haven't developed. But that's about average. Most teams don't even get a ROY or DROY and we've had 2 in the past 5 years. Most draft choices just don't work out. And, not that we've been great, but if you look around at a lot of teams, they've been worse at drafting than we have. I mean, I'm drafting for the Seahawks in the TT Mock draft and they're drafting to fill the same basic needs that they've been trying to fill for the past 3-4 years.

One great draft in five years that is not good and the truth is they just are not good at evaluating talent and skill.

plus it better have been good, not only was it a deep class of prospects Casserly/Kubiak had the first pick every round. Rick Smith showed up about a month later & had nothing to do with 06 draft for Texans so his assessment begins 07-2010 with 11 coming up :foottap:

Jackson, Okoye, ect. There just is not any reason for that and now Cushing has question marks too IMHO.
