Tony Hollings-More problems than not playing

That kind of thing happens all the time with professional athletes. It's not like he went and robbed anyone at gunpoint like Maurice Clarett.

Where Tony made his mistake is he got caught before making himself a household name superstar. Some of these guys could be accused of genocide and many fans would shrug it off as "childhood difficulties" etc.

On the bright side, we just opened up a roster spot. :BananaWav

I agree with the McNair comment--he got off because of who he was. Fortunately, the same can't be said for Fort Bend County juries when dealing with spousal abuse charges against Oiler quarterbacks who wore #1, right?

People carries weapons for many reasons. He is in the NFL. Maybe he needed to carry it for a staker or something. The suspended license is what gets me. I know it is a long wait at the DMV, but not the entire off-season. :)

True...but it is not difficult at all to get a permit to carry a concealed weapon.

So that makes it okay? No, that kind of thing happens all the time with people who are careless, irresponsible, stupid, or in some cases criminal. If this is true, I'll give Tony the benefit of the doubt and just say he's careless, irresponsible and stupid on this one.
 
I am going to ask a stupid question here.. so I have a rifle that has been at the house for over 5 years, If I go take it to the gun range to get it sighted in.. does that mean I need to carry a permit? Just curious

I think we can all agree that Hollings has been a bust but I'm not sure that illegal firearms possession and an expired license falls under the responsibility of casserly ...
 
Tony Hollings is a very good person. Just got caught with something stupid. He has been very good to my daughter as well as to my family. I'm sure everything will work out.

It gets me how these so called "professional players" seem to be above the law. They have lots of money and are highly recognized, but think they ae invincible! I say that's why alot of them put that crap up their nose, because they can't spend the amount of money they make.

For one Tony is doesn't put crap up his nose. 2 the money that he has, goes mainly to his family that he is providing for. Again, he was arrested and will go to court and have his day there and like jerek said in the post above yours, Tony will probably get probation. So he is not above the law.
 
1. Being a celeb in court can help and hurt you. It can help because you can afford better legal counsel than you probably could if you were poor. It can hurt you because assistant district attorneys get excited about publicity cases and want to hold on to those cases. Often BS cases get more attention from the DAs than they would if it were a gun possession case by a schmo.

2. I truly believe there is such a thing as DWB--Driving While Black. That if you are a young black man driving a nice car, it is not uncommon for you go get pulled over more than an older white guy driving a nice car.

In a DWB society, a young black football player needs to be watching his Ps and Qs when he is out driving and not have the illegal gun etc. The article said that Hollings was pulled over during a traffic stop....hmmmm....I wonder how the gun thing was found out. Suspended license arrest maybe, and then search the car?

In any society - whether you're black, white, or purple - you need to watch your P's and Q's when breaking the law. In the state of Texas, I find it hard to excuse a charge of driving with an unlicensed firearm in the vehicle. It's incredibly easy to get a license to carry a firearm (concealed, even).

Mistakes happen and I hope the best for him. I have no personal angst toward Hollings, despite his playing status. I am just less willing to pawn this off on the "DWB" thing.
 
Houston Texans third string RB Tony Hollings was arrested during a traffic stop Tuesday night after officers found he was carrying a gun without a permit and was driving with a suspended license.

Hollings is now out on bond and his first court date is set for next Tuesday.

His performance is struggling, but I believe this can improve with a better offense. In terms of this, it's just un-called for. He needs to represent Houston Texans football better.

I don't think I was pawning anything off on DWB.

I don't think anyone should break the law, but it is particularly ill-advised when DWBing, to do anything illegal, even if it is an illegal thing that people do all the time.

The funny thing to me is all the people who get busted going through security at the airport with a firearm. It happens more than you would think. People accidentally forget that they are packing. It is such as stupid thing to do that often the punishment against those people isn't severe because most of the time it is a situation where the person obviously gooned. (no intent to commit a crime). The charges are strict but usually the authorities don't throw the book at them.

By the way, if you are interested in the subject, here is a good article about athletes and guns in the NYTs that came out shortly after Iverson and Switzer (duh) got busted with a gun going through airport security:

I didn't mean to sound harsh. I was just making the point that if he was packing without a license in the state of Texas without a license, that's pretty dumb. And thanks for the article :)
 
I read somewhere that Tony Hollings was arrested for concealed weapons and driving without a license. Sorry I don't have a link. I was wondering if anyone else had heard this. If its true I don't see him coming back next season.
