CARSON Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson confirmed yesterday that he has reached an agreement in principle on a six-year contract extension that could bring him $60 million, including $21 million in guarantees.
Tomlinson's new deal, which will run through the 2011 season, will be the richest for an NFL running back in not only total dollars, but also guaranteed money. The previous high in total dollars belonged to former Denver Bronco Terrell Davis, who failed to see all of the money after sustaining a career-ending knee injury; and the previous high for guaranteed money was $17 million, set earlier this year when Clinton Portis signed a new contract with Washington.

Funny how right after the superbowl a lot of the pundits were talking about teams being sheep and following the mold of the Patriots who had the fewest $5 mil per year players in the NFL on their roster. Seems with all the money slung at Peyton, Bailey, Portis, LT all those CB's and several of the rookies that there were not many sheep after all. And I still don't understand how Fitzgerald, as a rookie example, is worth basically as much money as the best players in the NFL such as LT--I know he has potential but does he really have the potential to ever put up 2200 yds in a single year and follow it up with 2400 yds the next?--by the way the most yards by a WR ever is 1848 by Jerry Rice.
