TO to Sign With Cowboys

Mightymike said:
are there any clauses to keep him in line

Well, you have TO's word - does that count? From the same article....

Owens referred to his past problems as "life-learning experiences."

"I'm going to put those things behind me," Owens said. "They can only make a man stronger, wiser. For me, that's what it's done. I'll be a better teammate, a better person, a better man in life. I'm looking forward to this opportunity. I couldn't be more excited to be here."

Following up a question to Jones about Owens' past, the receiver interjected: "Jerry, I know what's expected of me. I won't let you down."

But, they also said,Jones didn't immediately reveal any contract details, but it was likely to include behavior-related provisions.
I just bet it does!

Here is the link for the whole thing.

Bittersweet

I didn't care too much that we won Super Bowl XXX with Deion Sanders. 'Course, we had just won 2 of the last 3 Super Bowls. Eventually I got over it but enjoyed watching him leave town. I'm not sure how long it'll take to get over this one (longer than after his first TD...much longer).

Maybe I'll settle into denial for the next 3 years. Pretend it's somebody else running onto the field.

But seriously, how do y'all like your chances when you come to Dallas this year?

interesting.. they go from Keyshawn "just give me the da** ball" to T.O. and with KJ ,when he was there, I don't recall hearing anything bad in the media...As far as T.O. well keep him interested (give him the ball) and just win... that should keep him quiet.

oh and I imagine the networks are lining up a primetime slot for Cowboys-Eagles in philly..

3 years, $25 million. I'm surprised he got that much, bravo Drew Rosenhaus on that one.

He gets a $5mil sal base this year. $5mil base next year. and a $4mil base next year.

he gets a $5mil bonus this year. $3mil bonus next year. $3mil bonus the next year.

But his cost to the cap, is $6.6mil. So next year he should count $8.2mil, then in 2008, he'll count as $10million........ is that right?? Or do they not count the Roster bonuses towards the cap??

I like the Cowboys unless they are playing the Texans, then the Cowboys take the back seat.

funny thing is we have more talent on paper now than in 2002, (and the cowboys too) yet, I will be rooting for a win, but I think the holes on the defensive side of the ball will be our downfall. and that the Cowboys won't forget the last time we met (not trying to toot the horn on the win we did in 2002 ,for that was a long time ago) and I would assume if any players want bragging rights against in-state rivals (that goes for rockets-spurs mavs and ranger-astro games too)

I think the cowboys will win this one eventhough I will be screaming for the texans and mainly because the holes on defense we have.

I think we won't hear much from him for most of the season, just because he wants to look good. When Bledsoe starts whining though, will we see the same sort of b-s they had between T.O. and McNabb in Philly?

Right now I don't like the Texans chances against anyone this year. Of course that could change during the preseason depending on how the team starts to shake out.

-The best modern day WR is now a Cowboy.

-Teams will double cover T.O, helping free up Terry Glenn in the deep game and help out rising star Patrick Crayton.

-Does nothing but good things to Julius Jones.

-He knows this is his last chance. He won't ruin the opportunity.

-Parcells will put him in place like he did to Keyshawn.

Welcome to Dallas Terrell. I got the popcorn poppin'! Now lets win us some Super Bowls!

That is AWESOME! It's great having such a disruptive, self centered cancer on the Cowboys. Go Giants!

The funny part about this is the Cowboys had quietly had a really good offseason. If you take talent alone they have signed some guys that would have been great here. I grew up a Cowboy fan starting in the 70s and still am one but have been here 12 years and root for the Texans too. So far they have.

Akin Ayodele, LB Jacksonville Unrestricted 5 years
Jason Fabini, OT N.Y. Jets Other* 3 years
Andre Gurode, OL Dallas Other* 1 year
Ryan Hannam, TE Seattle Unrestricted 4 years
Kyle Kosier, OL Detroit Unrestricted 5 years
Terrell Owens, WR Philadelphia Other* 3 years

Gurode was a resign but adding Fabini and then Akin, whom I thought was one of the top young LBs, along with Witherspoon is pretty nice.

There are quite a few Cowboy fans against this.

I'm all for it. He's at very worst the 2nd best WR in the NFL. Is he an *****? Of course. But when he is on the field there is no dought what he brings to the team.

As far as the star stepping. Some Cowboy fans act like he took a leak on it or took a dump on it. Cowboy fans love Teague for defending the star. If he would had defended TO that day he wouldnt had to defend the star.

Randy Moss might have something to say about that..:challenge

I think T.O. will help this team a lot. Maybe he will finally wake up after he's on his third team over the last several yeras.

At least our team knows how to actually sign free agents..

It's been 11 years since their last Super Bowl win. The great folks of Dallas are used to a winning tradition, Mr. Jones has rolled up his sleeves and is ready to bring us to the promise land.

The last few years of dissapointment are behind us, it's time to look forward with an open mind and arms wide open for anyone. It's go time in Big D.

The Ranch

I think the typical Cowboy fan will look at it this way.

In 75 words or less, tell me why you either do or don't want T.O. playing for America's Team. Please included your first name, last name initial and where you are posting from.

I guess now starts the campaign to restore T/O's "credibility? No 25 words from me but I'll call you on this BS. I want him here for TDs. Nothing more. Nothing less. If he get's his leg broken by an Eagles safety?

So what.
Now, for the rest of us, (or me, I should say) we're just rooting for that Eagles safety.

Say what you say about T.O when on the field T.O is in the Top 1 Of WR's he can strech the field take a it up the middle he can do everything except throw a pass like randle el. the cowboys are on their way to the playoffs thats how much impact T.O will have for them and i hate the cowboys i cant believe i just said that Playoffs:stirpot:

You can say what you want to say about TO but the only thing that remains the same is that TO is one of the top WRs. The cowboys have had a great off season so far and with TO now on the team they are the best in the division. He will help the passing game in more ways than one and he will help the running game. The only question is when/if he will blow up at anyone.

Thank goodness that cancer can go into remission, and I hope this is the situation.

If the "star" incident was an isolated one, then perhaps I could choose to be offended. However, before the personnel problems, TO was always coming up with some type of antic, e.g., the pom poms, the autographs with the Sharpie afer the TD, and yes, since my seats are usually in the end-zone, TO took his star dance from the center field to the end-zone star. I enjoyed the interview with him and Keyshawn on TBDSSP a few years back. The guy is controversial, but I have to give him props too when he's straight up funny.

Can't say I'm what is referred to as typical since I never had the hate relationship with TO. Living in the house with a die-hard 49er fan, I've had a lot of exposure to the ever clever TO.

God is punishing Dallas for that!!

Fires, floods, rains, storms, tornadoes... Jerry you screwed up!! Thats what you get when you make a deal with the devil!!!!

Talent I see no talent... I see a giant crybaby....a misery for the Cowboys!! Damn Jerry, you should retire and get a hobbie cause you suck at football!!!

There's no doubt Owens is a cancer. But when you strip that away, there's a really talented player left.

Apparently the Texans are void of such cancers but still managed to finish with the worst record in the NFL.

How'd that happen?

That "Star" thing with TO...well, thats just bad... no respect from me!! He will always suck major ***** in my book. The only time I thought he was funny was when he took out the Sharpie and signed a football and handed it to a kid... no, wait it was't kid it was given to Drew Rosenbutthouse... never mind I thought it was cool till I realized it went to his agent?? Not Cool?? What a crock of a player!!

Do you remember who knocked his block off at the Star?

The Might Texan

Well, we have problems but not so bad as to call in the devil... TO has some talent but he no superstar... he has a character flaw his mouth and his attitude! Respect can't be bought.. he has no respect!! He will wind up crying because he will never be in the Hall of Fame...

Just remember one thing about cancer it can come back and it will kill you!!

This TO cancer doesn't get fixed by saying I'm going to be a better person and teammate... He is a scam...

You tell them I'm coming and Hells coming with me...

Jerry is Stupid and the Cowboys are gonna SUCK!! TO and all...

Storms a coming

Thanks for watching my back BlueTexan!!! The cowgirls are doomed! this Dude must be wanting to belive TO can help his pathetic team...

If I'm not mistaken I think Deion Sanders knocked his block off at the Star!!! That is the day I changed my mind about Deion!!

Does anyone out there know for sure??

This is like talking to a bunch of 3rd graders. I get that you hate the Cowboys. Calling them the Cowgirls makes you look like a bitter person who is peeved the Oilers never could win jack squat and that the Texans won 19-10. Big picture, I don't care. Being someone who grew up in Ft. Worth, grew up a fan of Cowboys in the 70s and loves sports I never understood the bitterness to tell you the truth. Yeah there are some obnoxious Cowboy fans. But there are also a ton of us that grew up, because of the area of Texas we were in, rooting for the Oilers in the AFC while living and dying for the Boys. The difference is, when I moved here, I still kept my Dallas allegiance while taking in and rooting for teams in another Texas city, just like I did when I was younger. Having a team you enjoy to watch beside your favorite is not bandwagon, it is supporting a city. I know it is a rivalry but the blanket statements kill me. In all honesty, I'm not extremely excited about TO, just like I wasn't about Deion, BUT sometimes as a franchise you take a shot and in this parity filled league it may work out. Jerry Jones puts his balls on the line. Sometimes he is a jack(blank), sometimes it comes out aces, but all in all he has won SBs and created a rich franchise. If TO brings another and bolts..well that is the way of the NFL. If he is a cancer, oh well, I get no satisfaction but at least JJ went after arguably the best WR in the league. Deion helped them to another one. maybe TO will. In the meantime I'll keep posting here and trying to decide what can make the Texans a franchise that will get to have many successful seasons..just not against the Cowboys.:)

DALLAS — Branch Rickey once said: "You don't really know how much trouble a player can be until you have him on your own team."
Let's run that quote by the Dallas Cowboys a year from now. By then, they will regret the signing of Terrell Owens.

For starters, this is the beginning of the end of the Bill Parcells-Jerry Jones marriage. Mark it down.
They already have coexisted longer than many thought possible. Three seasons, no playoff victories.
Parcells is worth the trouble only if he wins big. Knowing Jones, I'm guessing he's about had his fill of the guy.

Hello, T.O.; goodbye, Bill

Whatever you think of Jones, he is upbeat, aggressive, a risk-taker. Parcells is a dark cloud. He is profane and belligerent, and even the people who acknowledge his brilliance as a coach eventually acknowledge he is not worth the trouble.
Parcells is at the point where the end of every season is going to become a soap opera. Will he come back? Oh please, Bill, come back.
Owens' arrival at Valley Ranch will speed up Parcells' departure.
I don't know what Parcells told Jones about Owens. He may have said: "Great idea, boss."
I do know what Parcells' buddies are saying. They're saying it was Jerry's idea. They're saying Bill wants nothing to do with the guy.
Funny, but a lot of us thought Jones had given Parcells complete control of personnel. Not so.

The art of the deal

Organizations reveal themselves by how they handle decisions like this one. The Cowboys are willing to take a chance because even if Owens isn't good for the football side of the building, he creates a buzz.
Jones has always been about selling and marketing. He understands that almost all publicity is good publicity.
T.O.'s arrival in Dallas will be the story of this NFL season. The Miami Dolphins acquired Daunte Culpepper. The New Orleans Saints got Drew Brees. Edgerrin James is now with the Arizona Cardinals, David Givens with the Tennessee Titans.
All those moves made more sense from a football standpoint. They all will be subplots to the T.O.-Jerry-Tuna story line.
The Texans? They have done better than you might think. They have added a serviceable defensive end (Anthony Weaver) and a pass-catching fullback (Jameel Cook) and could be getting close on a pass-catching tight end (Jeb Putzier).
They still need a middle linebacker, offensive line depth and another wide receiver. But with the addition of Reggie Bush and a solid draft class, they could be respectable in Gary Kubiak's first season.
Kubiak has told general manager Charley Casserly to get him players who put the team first, who are willing to play special teams, who understand there's a larger picture. Good for him. Teams that have not yet learned how to win can't bring in players who think otherwise.
But the Cowboys will be more interesting. No matter what Parcells said inside the walls of Valley Ranch, his friends are hearing something else. Has Parcells decided to quit before training camp? Will T.O. be his out?
Incredible, isn't it? Owens hasn't even played a game, and already there is trouble. He'll probably rip the locker room apart, too. T.O. is about T.O. If he's getting his catches, he'll be fine for a while. If he's not, he'll be a nightmare.
He sees the team concept only in terms of what it can do for him. Pro Football Hall of Famer John Riggins said of Owens: "He doesn't believe the normal social contracts apply to him."
If Owens couldn't get along with Donovan McNabb, Drew Bledsoe has no chance.
Here's my Terrell Owens story.
The Green Bay Packers had just defeated the San Francisco 49ers at Lambeau Field in January 2002. After the game, Owens stood a dozen feet away from 49ers quarterback Jeff Garcia and complained loudly and bitterly about the play-calling in general and Garcia in particular.
I was amazed that an athlete would say such things about a teammate standing within earshot. Owens clearly didn't care. He seemingly was upset more about not getting his numbers than the defeat.
Few general managers or head coaches would want Owens on their team if they had seen his act that day.
The Philadelphia Eagles took a chance on him because they had lost three consecutive NFC Championship Games and believed they were one player away from the Super Bowl. The Eagles knew the risks.
Owens helped get them over the hump. He played brilliantly and courageously in the Super Bowl. When he didn't get a new contract, he went ballistic.
The Cowboys aren't one player away. Owens will say all the right things, but he will see the Cowboys as a vehicle for himself, more money, more exposure, more of the things he cares about.
He'll drive Parcells crazy and hasten his departure.
Yet he's perfect for Jones. He'll make headlines. He'll have the Cowboys again leading off SportsCenter.
According to the Dallas Morning News, Jones has told his people to be prepared for a flood of season-ticket sales when the signing is
announced.
Jones sees T.O. more in terms of marketing than football. The football side of his brain probably knows it won't work. The marketing side — the relentless salesman — doesn't care. Let's see if he feels the same way a year from now.
richard.justice@chron.com

Another writer trying to flame BP and JJ. Most writers didnt think it would last 2 years. Now they cant stand the fact it lasted 3 and he just got an extention. I still feel like this will be BPs last year but I said it from the beginning it would last at least 4 years.

He's the 1st writer I've seen say BPs FRIENDS are saying he had nothing to do with it. I cant see a Houston writer getting that kind of info and no one in the Dallas area got it. Plus the fact it's Justice.

You are kidding right? "Some talent but no superstar".

I don't like Terrell much myself but he has plenty of talent and he's a superstar.

Interesting opinions all the way around. All I can say is, I already have phone calls from parties requesting any available seats we might have again this year!

Take the acquisition any way you want, but It's genious marketing.

Could you imagine this game on the OU/UT Red River Shootout Weekend! It would be an AWESOME FOOTBALL WEEKEND IN BIG D!

1. Jerry is never afraid to take a chance of players like this. Charles Haley is the first example I can think of.

2. Jerry is a great marketing owner. He's always thinking about money and how to make it.

3. The Cowboys offense instantly has become better.

I'm hearing it's basically a one year deal for all intents and purposes and if he misbehaves he'll be gone after this year.

Like Terrell said buy your popcorn. It's gonna be interesting.

Agree with everything as most would. However, you need a #4 in there in that it could blow up in thier face and set back the organization in its development. This is a high risk situation, but we all know that our friends in Dallas love a good drama. ;)

It is official! From Fox Sports....

The reviled receiver joined the Cowboys on Saturday, signing a three-year, $25 million contract to play for Jerry Jones and Bill Parcells in what promises to be an interesting combination of strong personalities. The deal includes a $5 million signing bonus, with salaries of $5 million this year, $8 million in 2007 and $7 million in 2008.

"I'm a star among stars now," a smiling Owens said.

Right!

Props to Rosenhaus for pulling that kind of cheddar out.

I think TO has been more villified than he probably deserves. Of course, I don't know him or the Eagles, but I suspect the Eagles had much more a role in the fracture than they let on.

T.O. has a big mouth and may not be the guy Donovan McNabb invites to a wedding, but he is a gamer of the highest caliber and I doubt if that has changed.

I wouldn't have done it but that's why I do what I do and Jerry does what he does.

There is a simple process here. Don't worry about things you can't control.

Jerry can't be controlled. If you're gonna be a Cowboys fan this is par for the course. I learned that a long time ago. Now if I still had my tickets I could voice my approval or disapproval.

I can almost guess though that the stadium will be packed just to see what Terrell does. Like a bad car wreck...you can't NOT look.

I forgot about Deion. He was a bit of a problem child and turned out fine in Dallas.

Although compared to Terrell Deion would be Shirley Temple and Terrell would be Johnny Rotten.

Yes, but Deion was on an island on the field. TO needs his teammates.

BTW, no right or wrong answers here, just like to banter.

Deion was very good friends with Michael and so he had Michael to lean on when he was there....he also hung with Emmitt. Haley was the one guy I think that was sort of the locker room loner. I do remember he would not speak to the press and he never did as far as I can remember.

Terrell is another best friend of Michael's.

Oh yea. If you play for the Cowboys and you need somebody to talk to just find Jerry. He NEVER shuts up. :)

I always did think that thing Terrell did with the cheerleader pom poms was the funniest TD celebration I ever saw. And I don't like that much but that was funny. He's clever if nothing else.

Once again cannot disagree as I love watching TO play and the sideshow. I just would rather watch him perform in other colors than the Texans. It will be fun this year in the Big D.

I'm sure the Philly fans are already foaming at the mouth at the thought of Terrell coming to Philly in a Cowboys uni.

Nate Newton use to say they were the only fans that he knew for a fact ate their own young.....

Philly fans are awful, but they find comfort in it. More than any other city in the US they truly have thier own culture and sense of community in my opinion. Messed up, smart, open minded, love their neighbors, love their teams and can snap at the drop of a cheese steak.

This is a true story...I meet a young couple once at Texas Stadium that were huge Cowboys fans and they were from and lived in Philly.

He told me once that they went to a Cowboys/Eagles game at the Vet and when he cheered for the Cowboys he was dangled off the side of the railing by some Eagles fans. They were arrested and taken to the jail IN the stadium.

Uh..no thanks......if you can't go to a game that you paid for and cheer for whoever you want without being hurt there is something terribly wrong. To me those types of fans are mental.

I'm guessing those same guys would love to dangle Terrell.

Bingo! This is exactly the conversation I had with my husband. The year before last I believe, we were at the Texas Stadium Cowboy/Eagle game. I have to say it was the worst game I have ever attended in 10 years. I feared for our safety literally. The fowl mouthed, biligerant eagle fans that traveled to Dallas were threatning ME for BEING with a Cowboy lover. Throwing beer, pushing and shoving even kids, threatning to tear the stadium apart from toilet rim to toilet rim with fans inside!!! It was horrible. I can only imagine what it is going to be like with T.O. in silver n blue. :ouch:

Yep Pam...when you can't go to a game without feeling threatened there is something wrong. It sounds all warm and fuzzy to say Philly fans are great fans, love their team, do this, do that but the bottom line is they have a reputation and it's deserved.

I like some of their players ok...heck I even like their coach...but those fans that do the threatening and fighting and making life unbearable for opposing fans are scum.

Get ready Texan fans for a treat...I'm thinking the Eagles will be visiting Reliant this year....you'll see these same fans up close and personal. Or if you go to Philly wear your riot gear. You're gonna need it.

Who was it that Randy Moss pretended to moon awhile back? GB fans? ... Everyone talks like that was so classless, so this or that (if he had really mooned them, I would understand ... but come on, the way he did it, personally I thought it was funny.) ... But geez, there are entire camps of fans in pro sports that are just ridiculous. And that's here ... try going to a "football" match in Europe some time.
