Thoughts on Carr

fresno8

Waterboy
I think Carr has shown good progress this year. Throw out that bad three game stretch and the 2 picks today that weren't his fault, and his numbers would being looking really good. One other note is if we'd won the GB/Min games we'd be looking playoffs and a 10-6 finish. Next year he will become a big time star. This guy has what it takes. I may be a littled biased being I'm from Fresno, but he's very good. He'll bring big time excitment to Houston once he gets the talent around him and time to throw and his full confidence. He did it in Fresno (I know Fresno isn't NFL, but) and has shown glimpses of it for Houston. I think he has lots of Favre like qualities. He loves to play, plays hurt, he's tough, can win in the 4th quarter, make all the throws and has the big arm and he can be a fiery leader (would like to see more consistency w/ that). As big a Carr fan as I am he does have his moments of stupidity, but some of that is going away and will continue to go away (favre often makes stupid plays, but makes up for it w/ lots of brilliance), Carr will have lots of big time plays in the coming years. Can't wait for him to have a line and all the weapons on offense.
This is just for fun Carr v. Favre yr 3

Carr year 3* 15/15 7-8 (3rd place) 271/442 61.3% 15/14 3,425 84.5
(possibly 2nd)

Favre year 3 16/16 9-7 (2nd place) 318/522 60.9% 19/24 3,303 72.2

*Carr been starter for 3 years, Favre didn't play rookie year, but Carr was hurt lots of 2nd year, so third year comparison not completely accurate, but close enough, because you can't compare Carr to a legend yet, just say'n there's similarities.

my thoughts on carr.
hes not the sharpest qb out there but hes got a great arm. needs to make better decisions. he needs to stand in the pocket a little more and not try to go down as easily as he does.
hes should get to the pro bowl a couple of times.

Most of his INT's do seem to come then. Today Bradford just wasn't looking for the ball he was wide open w/ lots of green in front of him that was inexcusable. Johnson didn't fight for the other ball it shouldn't have been picked, that doesn't bother me he's been to good all season. I think Carr takes his chances at the end of the first half of games and they get picked sometimes. He also tossed 3 picks v Indy the first meeting and a couple of those were at the end of the game when things didn't matter. I don't know if this problem is good or bad. He hasn't seemed to cost us any games we've been down or up by 7 late in games so it doesn't seem to be a problem. It did cost us points today at the end of the half.

reply to the texanator. I agree, he's not the sharpest QB. I think he will be much more sharp next season. He's not comfortable in the pocket yet. He goes through stretches where he's very sharp. You have to remember how many times he's gotten creamed in 3 years. Some of his sacks are inexcusable, but that will go away w/ a better line and time. He does make lots of plays w/ his feet. He will go to some pro-bowls, but hopefully with that comes a Super Bowl and he's got what it takes. I'm excited about Carr and this team. As he matures and the offense opens up he will be very good. I wish his firey attitude and leadership were more consistent. He has those things, but doesn't show it game to game at times it seems.

what do you guys think
AstroFan need sleepie

I can't really speek for Carr, i think he is solid, but Andre Johnson is amazing. Gonna be one day be a top 2-3 WR in the NFL, if not #1. Sick player.

I see lots of shotguns next to his INT's. Carr isn't a shotgun QB and I hate it when they run shotgun. The pass protection is worse and Carr looks to me to have bad footwork out of the shotgun and the rushers get there quicker. Thanks for the time breakdown on INT's. Looks like he throws them early in the half and right before the half if I'm reading right. I think he'll be fine next year I really do. As big of fan as I am of Carr he can be frustrating at times, but the Texans are the same way, coincidence. Both will be much improved next season.

Buffalo Demon. You have it about right with Carr and Johnson. Johnson is amazing and Carr is pretty close to solid. There are times when his intensity and consentration seems to wane at times during games. With another year under his belt, the draft and a better line he will be solid and then some. Potentially a top 10 or even top 5 type QB. Johnson is already a top 5 player and working his way to the top. You guys look to have a good one in Lee Evans and McGahee. How's Losman coming along, I know Bledsoe is the guy for now and probably next year. If Losman pans out you guys got it good with Losman/McGahee/Evans/ Williams on the O-line and on D Clements/Posey/Spikes

I know how much ALL of you are DYING to hear my opinions on your team

Once again, the 1pm EST start time thing let me watch your team play. Your O-line did not look as bad as I have seen them play on other occasions, but I must say that your D really had some fire. Now, Byron isn't exactly Manning or Favre, and there was no Freddy out there, but still an impressive effort none-the-less. Carr didn't impress me yesterday, other than on a few throws. The nice TD toss to AJ was well thrown, but what were the Jags thinking leaving AJ in man coverage that close to the endzone, and I didn't see any safety support. I think you have a solid, though not spectacular receiver corps outside of AJ. If you had a burner to complete him, you guys could be lethal on O. If nothing else, it would open up more running lanes for DD, who looked like the franchise back that he is today.

Back to the O-line, usually the weakest link of your team. While they played well, they were far from upper echelon, and DD was still getting hit too early on many running plays, and in the back field more than I would like to see. As you may have noticed, if he can get in the second level of D coverage, he does a lot of damage. Carr looked average at best. While I think he managed the game well overall, he made some ill advised throws, and played way below his potential. This could have to do with the Jags D though, as they played pretty solid, really only giving up 14 points to you. You D...*whistles*, fast, aggressive, swarming to the ball....probably the best I can recall them looking. I'd give them a solid "A" for today, and give your offense a "B" as Carr did not look overly special, and the O-line still let DD get hit on the wrong side of the line too much. Just my two cents....but enjoy the win guys, you looked good on Sunday...this should be a sign of things to come.

Carr needs just a little more time to throw. He still is getting rushed; however, he delivers when he has a few more seconds to look downfield. I believe we will be so much better next year. Looking forward to 2005!

I think Carr can take us a long way. The thing is... he may NEVER be the 3,4, or 5 td guy everyone wants to see...especially under this Capers system. Its always going to be run first and pass second. BUT, I truly feel he is going to turn into one of those winners who always puts in a consistent performance and who is always going to give his team a chance to win no matter what.

Overall, what I am most pleasantly surprised about at this point is his mobility.... man that white boy can run!

Tailgate, your definatelt right. I've rode the coaches hard this year and still am not sure they can take us to the next level. Carr can. In Capers system your dead on he'll be lucky to throw for 3 td's any given day. What I want nexy year is lots of 20-25 250 2td 0 or1 int most games, sure I'd like 300 and 4td, but 250 and 2td a game will get him to the pro-bowl and us into the playoffs. That would mean he's really grown up and has a line in front of him. I think Capers wants him to be kind of like a Dilfer w/ the Ravens, just manage the game and be safe. If it gets us a Super Bowl great, but this guy is so much better and could do so much in this league if given time and the reigns are loosened. If we're not much better next year and it's because we're asking Dave to manage games then for sure I'll be back calling for the coaches heads again. Even though we're winning I'm still not sold on our coaches, reason being we should possibly be in the playoffs this year if we'd beaten GB and Min, they didn't let Dave and the offense win those and asked too much of the D. Love the direction of this team and organization Go Texans

Chawky1, you guys need to play Dilfer, I know he's nothing flashy, but he's won a Super Bowl and all he does is win. With your recievers and Alexander you need a guy like Dilfer. I know he's not the franchise though and Hassleback is your guy, but being from Fresno I love seeing Dilfer(& Huff) play and he always wins. Carr didn't look great yesterday, he just won that's all. I'm not sure which throws were ill advised though. The 2 picks at the end of the half weren't really his fault. AJ should have fought for that ball, but he's so good I'm not going to complain and Bradford just wasn't looking for the freak'n ball that was horrible. Other than that I didn't see, but maybe one ill advised throw. He didn't throw much. You saw some of the great throws he made though and he'll do that more consistenly with a good line. I've been calling for a receiver to complement AJ all year. Once we get that guy watch out.

Bottle-O-Bud I couldn't agree with you more. I have said it this year and in my first thread that he has what it takes to be a fiery leader and great leader , but he doesn't always do it. He needs more consistency with it. In the Jags came he was smiling and you knew they were going to when. Other games he looks out of it. I don't know why that is. He's a "true leader", but doesn't do it all the time. He needs to be that way yelling at his line or whoever needs their ***** chewed and the team would respond and play better. Hopefully next year he is more assertive with his leadership role and hopefully the o-line comes together. We got something special in Houston w/ team and QB. :jumpbanan

Not that there is a good time for an interception, but starting the game and just before half are points in the game where you want your QB making good decisions and executing well.

At least he's not throwing picks at the end of games. I would like to know how many of the ones before the half would have cost us points or if he was just trying to make a play to get us in field goal range or a TD. The one he threw to AJ yesterday cost us points I know that(AJ should have fought for that ball). The one to Bradford was Bradford's fault. He needs to be more efficient before the half is what it looks like. I have missed the first quarter of most games because it's right when church starts (live in CA) so I can't comment on that. I have caught the first 5-7 minutes of the first quarter in the last 5 games before I've gone to church and he hasn't thrown a pick. He's making better decisions and will continue to get better

Looky, a Seahawk!

Dude, how cool you are here. I am looking for the ultimate 'Hawk board to go join. Nope, ain't no fan but you happen to be the team that reps HOME for me and we (FILO_Doc, FILOgirl and FILOMAN) are planning on making the trip up home to make this game next year. Can you post a link to your board please? :excited:

Carr's a good quarterback with the potential to be a great one. His confidence bothers me though. Caper's said early in the season, when the press was grilling him about the playcalling, that Carr audibles 25% of the time. Every time I have seen carr audible it has been to a run, a draw a couple of times (wild & crazy). I think he needs to have a little more faith in his recievers (Johnson, Armstrong, Gaffney not Bradford) and through a quick fade in the face of a blitz. Thoughts?

I'll make this short n sweet. The only beeoch I have on him is it still seems to me he's puttin a lotta mustard on every pass when sometimes he needs to take a lil something off. Case & point: The INT right before the half vs the Jugs (of piss). If you remember right, he rifled it hard in traffic & CBradford didn't have much time to defend himself much less make the grab. Plus theres been a couple of more times I thought he coulda floated one out there & gotten the desired result. Hopefully it'll all work itself out with more experience. Aside of that I believe hes right on time. The most pleasant surprise for me is his mobility. He's no MVick but you can sure bet DCs around the league account for his mobility. Ok now I'll shut up.

I agree. Carr needs to slow it down a bit and put some touch on some of those throws...especially when a defender is no where in the area.

It seems to me that this will be an easy problem to fix though.......just waiting for it to hapepen. :hmmm:

I think it is funny that no one NO ONE talks about this being the first year Carr has been given the green light to change plays at the line. I think that is a huge change for him and I think more improvement will come. Also I think DD was too tentative after the ealry season fumbles, either Wells will get more playing time or another RB will be brought in. More dependablity from the TE will help as well

I still think Bradford could have got that ball, but it was zipped in there pretty damn hard at not a very far distance. His hands weren't even up though and he wasn't looking for the ball. He'll get better w/ his touch. You never see Favre take much off any throw though.

Coach Jim, he does throw balls to hard at times, but it doesn't happen that much, the guy just has a cannon and even on some short routes his receivers have tight coverage and the ball has to be rifled in there. I was mad at Bradford, but it was thrown awfully hard, however he wasn't even close to ready. He knows his QB throws hard and he needs to be ready. Maybe they should, put a little extra time in after practice working on those type of passes. And yeah Carr can run. He's probably 2nd or 3rd behind Vick at best in the league at scrambling. I believe he ran a 4.67 at the combine. Not bad for a guy 6-3 235 w/ a rocket arm.

Carr does audible to the run a lot. I'm not sure why. He's a gunslinger, w/ a gun slinger's mentality, so I'm not sure why when he has freedom to call 25% of the plays he doesn't audible to a pass more. Hopefully w/ a year of audibles and more confidence he'll make opportunities for himself and the offense. Through the air and on the ground when needed. He's smart enough to make good decisions I just don't think he's got the confidence yet. Maybe with a better line, a little more preparation, and another WR to compliment AJ his audibles will improve.

A better Oline is all that is needed. While on that topic also, does anyone else agree that our subs looked way more aggressive on the offensive line than our regular starters at the position?

I know that the o-line is all Carr and the Offense needs. Our Offense also needs Carr to become a more consistent leader. Carr looked so good early when he had just a little time and the WR had time to run their routes. Our subs run blocked more aggressively and played harder I think. The pass blocking still wasn't that good. McKinney has to go. And wiegerts replacement needs to be drafted to be ready for '07 or '08.

I saw in game graphic that Carr is the third rushing QB in the league at this time :bouncey:

Carr does rock, wait till he has the line and a WR to complement AJ, to go along w/ Gaffney/Armsrtong in the slots.

Carr does, at times, need to put a little more touch on the ball, but I remember another guy who used to have that problem. His name was Elway. Also, it's true that he sometimes looks a little dull in the head, but pass protection can do WONDERS for that. First thing I want to see is Carr audibling to a pass for a change and the line protecting him until the announcer says, "Wow, look at that. He's got all day to throw it." We need to hear that, because, when we do, even the media in the NE will be completely stuck on the name ANDRE JOHNSON, just like TO now, and just like Randy Moss the past coupla years.

First year he ran for his life, second year he missed a few games with injuries. I expected some growing pains this year, needs a little more time in the pocket. Needs to improve his passes on slants and crosses, throws behind receivers too often. He could be solid for us for a long time.

Thanks I'll do that next year, we have a VCR and it sucks so maybe I'll invest in something good next year so I won't miss a thing. Hopefully it will change my life as you say j/k

I beleive that Carr already has the wrs he needs to be successful. Armstrong was a great find by Charlie C., this guy probally has the best hands on our team, always came up with the big catch on a crucial 3rd down(sign of a special player) . Also people forget that Gaffney came out very young and this season he has really showed me something. I don't know what it is, but it just seems like he has developed a little attitude in his play kinda like he has something to prove. I don't know if it was because of AJs break out year, but it just seems like he's more motivated and pushing himself and is growing nicely into a #2 wr. I will go ahead and say this now, with all the defenses gearing to stop AJ, next year Gaffney is going to make them pay and surprise alot of people. I think what our Qb and wrs need the most is chemistry, the talent is already there. Do yall remember the jets game where Carr stepped back and then threw the ball to AJ and nobody was there because they were not on the same page and the refs threw a flag for intentional grounding. During last offseason we were all hearing stories on how Johnson stood in front of a throwing machine for hours at a time to really work on his hands and boy did it ever work I love his work ethic. Why not stand in front of the real thing. I mean I would love to hear stories of Carr and his wrs going away somewhere during the offseason away from all domestic distractions and other teamates and stricly working on routes and their timing. Especially timing, most bad throws are a result of bad timing. If they did this I beleive the offense would benefit tremendously, especially in the audible department.

In case yall haven't noticed I haven't spoke at all about Bradford. This is because in a contract year ,a year where players usually try to market themselves to the team and others with their play on the feild. He has shown me only one thing, that we don't need him in 05 unless we sign him for depth and its a one year deal for the minimun. Its time for the veteran to step aside and let these young wrs grow and prosper, especially Gaff and Armstrong. Everytime we are in a three reciever set next year it needs to be Aj, Gaff, and Armstrong.

Carr Bomb, I really like our WR's, I think Gaffney and Armstrong are solid. Would just like to see another deep threat/speed guy (like a Calico/Burleson) to complement AJ. I almost like Armstrong better than Gaffney. I think they're both good. Your right next year our 3 WR set will be pretty impressive. What are your thoughts on that? I wouldn't want Gaffney as our 2 because he doesn't stretch the field. He's a solid 3 and I think Armstrong will push him. Would also like a TE upgrade, but I'd still be okay w/ same guys for 1 more year. Good point about the chemistry they need to work out on their routes it would pay dividends. Good points, Go Texans.

I Think Carr Has Really Improved This Year, Ive Reviewed Some Of The Games This Year And Looked At Carr Hes Emerging As A Star/leader For Sure Look In His Eyes Theres A Star For Sure !!! Also I Noticed 7 Ints From Carr Were Tipped Not His Fault ,,plus We Play Way To Safe In The Redzone We Really Do If We Look Back U Could Given Carr Probaly Another 6 Or 7 Tds ....but What I Disliked Most Of All This Year Was The Playcalling It Really Hurt Carrs Numbers And The Texans Victories E.g. We Tied The Vikes Thanx To Carr And The Wr's And We Win The Toss And Capers Wants To Run Run Run D.d.'s Great But Hes Easy To Stop When The Defense Knows Hes Going To Run On First Second And Third Down Yikes ...lets Open It Up A Lil'bit And Protect My Boy...and Youll Watch Carrs Texans Steam Roll Into The 06 Playoffs-out Ps Hey Fresno8 Im From Exeter ,ca Do You Know Where That Is? About 45 Niutes From You And 10 Mins From Visalia..........go Texans And Carr Rules

I'm in Fowler 15 min south of Fresno. Been to Exeter a few times. Nice town. My girlfriend has cousins who live in Exeter. Carr is on the rise. I too would like to see the play calling opened up. Do you have the NFL ticket to catch all the Texans games.

I Dont Have The Ticket But My Bro Does Lives Next Door Only Missed 1 Game Against Denver Didnt Miss Much Lol Yikes My Bro Is A Chiefs Fan So It Was Fun In Week 3 Haah My Other Bro Is A Colts Fan Still Waiting For A Chance To Drive A Lashing Into Them But It Will Come ......next Year Texans Playoffs

My opinion, CARR's THE MAN....He does have the potential to be a great QB, as he was compared to a young Farve many times....Hes maturing very well since he first started...Hopefully during off season he can learn from the mistakes he's made with bad passes and learn to be more consistent...Your QB is only as good as your O-line so they still need to work at protecting him better, you can't always blame it on Carr...Look how many times Manning's been sacked, which is rare, that confidence sure goes a long ways when you know you have the time to throw and can then be more consistent...IMO, he has gotten better every year...He is a leader, he just needed to get mad to discover that....LOL....I like him mad... :hairpull: it shows he's not just the Pretty Boy QB everyone thinks he is...I like the way he plays...He's got the youth, the athletic body, talent, desire to learn, and the brains...Iam looking forward to next year...If hes been getting better every year, then next years going to be even more fun to watch him...You Go Carr!!!! :jumpbanan

David has progressed every year, but not as much as he should have or could have due to an o-line that he should sue for non-support. He isn't as quick on the trigger as he should be and doesn't progress as well through his reads as he should, but he is getting better at it. Given a reasonable facimilly of an o-line, he will be a top tier QB. Will he be a hall of fame type??? Who knows. We sometimes lose sight of the fact that we don't need hall of fame people to be a winning football team. Nice to have, fun to watch, but not needed to win.

Gaffney and Armstrong are both very good POSSISION type recievers and we are lucky to have them, but we need another deep threat opposit AJ to have a chance to really click in the passing game and a TE to work the middle of the field.

Wow, I'm a little late to comment on this :shocked I think Dilfer is a great person as well as a great QB and he has this wonderful affect on team chemistry. Furthermore, I think everyone plays better around him when he is in, plus he does find a way to win. However, he is getting old, his arm has been suspect as of late, and the times he has been in this year he has looked REALLY rusty...ick he looked scary bad. I used to feel strongly that he was the answer over Hass, I'm not so sure anymore. I blame most of our problems now on scheme and coaching/playcalling over talent and who is in the line-up. Even with tons of injuries to key players we still have a boat load of talent (once again on paper).

Carr right now is a product of his system, protection, and play calling. I don't think he is being put in a position to win. The RUN RUN PASS thing as other people have mentioned is making game planning the Texans quite easy. They need to mix it up, seriously upgrade the line and then he will be fine.

Oh, and the best Seahawks fan board that I have found is http://www.seahawks.theinsiders.com VERY VERY active.
