I know it was only one game, BUT...

I watched Landry really close last night b/c there has been mention of us drafting him #8 and I say NO WAY! Either the guy was playing not to get hurt or he just isn't that good. I didn't see any specatular hits, he got into the backfield once, but ran right by the RB and didn't make the tackle. He seems like decent player, but not one worthy of #8. With that pick I want a PLAYMAKER! Reggie Nelson seems to fit that bill alot more. We'll see how he performs next week!

Meanwhile Russell showed some flashes of HUGE potential last night. He's got a CANNON for an arm. The announcers said he could launch a ball 85 yards! He's got very nice touch, and is definitely more of a pocket type passer. I think he's got an advantage over VY in that aspect. Another thing I like about him is how he SPREADS the ball around. Apparently he had 3 WRs that had 50+ catches this year. And he can definitely run when necessary, but is NOT a run first QB.

Quinn on the other hand looked lost. And if his favorite target (Smardja SP?) wasn't open he made mistakes! I don't see him worth the #1 overall pick.

On another note, I like that WR from LSU Dwayne Bowe. That guy looks like a player and might be someone we could look it later in the draft!
 
my thoughts:

the problem is that samardzija never WAS open. neither was rhema mcknight. both of these guys SUCK. mcknight especially. and LSU didn't make it any easier by keeping both safeties back at all times. they let notre dame have a field day with the running game because they wanted to give quinn no options whatsoever. well, that worked. can't wait to see quinn at the next level with some competent receivers, and a running game that can be respected. unfortunately it looks like cleveland will draft him, so that's not likely. ;)

russell threw the ball several times into triple coverage. he did great overall though. but he isn't really underrated by any means. i'm liking him more, but there's nothing really sensational about his game. he really doesn't have a great feel for throw selection. there's no authority in his passes or decisions.

tom zbikowski, while probably overrated, is still the best player on that defense.

dwayne bowe is a first rounder. he's a big guy and makes great seperation from the corners in man-to-man, unlike other big guys like dwayne jarrett and samardzija.

herman johnson is absurd. ryan harris looked like crap.
 
Quinn might be the best ND QB ever stats wise, but in his tenure with ND, they never beat a top 10 team, has not won a bowl game and has not shown he can bring a team back. And like this season proved with ND, thier record was padded with alot of bad teams and the all 3 academies.
Now we can't fault them for playing in the Sugar Bowl even though thier record did not warrant it, they were invited to the BCS game, and teams are usually invited by drawing power, and ND is a big ticket seller. But they did not deserve to be playing LSU last night, I think Rutgers would have been a better game, but they don't have the drawing power.

But like you posted, Quinn looked lost last night, and he usually does when there is pressure up the middle. He will be a good NFL QB though.
 
It was evident that ND did not have the players or athletes that LSU has, that is why ND got beat as bad as they did.

I have to disagree with you Kast, Ryan Harris played an exceptional game. He protected Quinn's blindside very well. He didn't give up a sack. He did a good job of sealing his side for a couple of Walkers long runs on Harris's side. He is quick enough to pull and to get to the LB as he displayed....what specifically did you see that looked like cr*p?
 
he looked like crap as an NFL prospect. nothing special. there's nothing remotely exceptional about his game as far as projecting to the NFL. he doesn't overpower anyone, he doesn't have quick feet, he's not that strong...

He'll be drafted on day 1 of the draft.
 
I'd like to see the Texans draft Herman Johnson next year. That guy is a monster. He looks pretty athletic too, not just a big fat guy. He looked like solid muscle.
 
Brady Quinn is not that good...

I think it's a shame that Troy Smith isn't in the mix for being the first QB taken...

I keep hearing names like Quinn, Russel, Brohm....

The overall QB class is weak, but hopefully people will keep overlooking Smith and we can steal him in the second...
 
I've never really understood the hype about Brady Quinn. I haven't really watched many of his games, as I am definitely not a fan of Notre Dame, but the ones that I have watched he just looks like your average QB.

If you look at his numbers it warrants attention. When he plays Army, Air Force and Navy he is spectacular. When he plays Micigan, USC and LSU he is only so-so.
 
Rick Mirer, errrrrr Brady Quinn was just another object (in a long list) of the ND hype machine and its NBC station....
 
the talent on notre dame rivals a team like indiana. they're still an academic institution first and foremost. when the opponent is better at every single position than you are, well, it's tough to win those big games.

i've been poining this out about landry for months- against top-flight competition he is mediocre. the tennessee WRs just ran right by him.

I'm not on the Landry bandwagon either. I like Leon Hall a lot better at the #8 spot, pending workouts.
 
Well I saw the game like most of you all yesterday. But I'm not going to say someone's a horrible player based on what we saw on one game. I'm not a big Brady Quinn fan and he didn't look too good yesterday. Russell on the other hand made a variety of throws and looked great. I think Russell will come out based on what he did yesterday. He has nothing left to accomplish at LSU unless he wants to win the Heisman or a national championship. Who know what will happen next year and I don't think Russell or his family will take the risk. LaRon Landry on the other hand didn't make a lot of plays but there weren't a lot of plays made on his side. He did have a nice interception that highlighted his quickness. It's hard to judge players on one game and I'm sure the scouts and general managers will look at the entire body of work.
 
i'm not sure how anyone can say landry did a poor job. all those times quinn forced passes or was sacked or had to move out of the pocket or threw the ball away and etc? landry was doing his job. both safeties were in coverage the entire time. they covered notre dame's receivers. he did just fine. i think people expect too much from these players...just because they're an elite talent doesn't mean they're going to be making ridiculous plays every game.
 
you cant fault landry this game. they played the safeties quite deep all game. notice how quinn didnt get any long throws off...i still think he's a very good player, and still more polished all around than nelson. the defensive scheme just didnt call for him to make any big plays, and its not like he had the chance with quinn sucking all game.

Being a Hoosier and watching Notre Dame play (hoping they lose every game so I dont have to deal with Bandwagon IU fans that root for Notre Dame) they are for sure better then us at almost every position. We havent been good at football for at least 4 years. Last bowl game was over 10 years ago.

Our team has some up and comers though. Watch for James Hardy. Stands at about 6'6/6'7...former SF for our basketball team. Randy Moss like but definetly not that polished yet.
 
He did have that interception from the deflection that bounced up like 15 ft. Not an exceptional play by him but his awareness allowed him to make the play. (many others probably could have.) I also think he could have intercepted that pass the quinn through to front of the endzone. LSU's cb turned around and actually int'd it and rolled over it but the ball never touched the ground...the officials reviewed it and called it incomplete. It looked like Landry was in position to make that play too.

He rushed that one time I remember and bit for the rb but quinn handed it off to the receiver coming around. landry saw that and switched angles again but over ran him...that would have been an awesome play if he nailed it.

quinn did throw that 1 td to the left side of the field. the cb missed the wr and landry kind of gave up on the play i think cuz he thought the receiver would drop it. he over ran the receiver. again he could have and should have nailed the crud out of that guy!

overall i was not dissappointed. i thought he played a very solid game which is who he was. we'll see about nelson when they play on monday...i hope he has an insane game and plays like a lot of us think he can.

I think you have given a very fair assessment of Landry's play last night.

I dont know about that. Landry is FAR better than Hall. Landry played good tonight. If anyone recalls LSU only allowed 30 yards in the second half. they were doing something right. He didnt play horrinle like people are saying and it didnt effect his draft status, the only people that are saying he played so bad just didnt like him to begin with and never will.

I haven't really followed him much at LSU, has he done anything to warrent a pick based on this play in those "in between" years. When I watch LSU, it has always been for other guys. LSU followers' opinions please.

Justin Vincent is a strange situation his freshman year he was unstoppable then he had a BAD sophmore slump and tore his ACL at the end of the year. His junior was just as bad as his sophmore. This year he was passed up on the depth chart (as u saw Keiland Williams) and another good freshman. But in sugar bowl game he actually showed what he is capable of (like what he did as a FR).

He has alot of potential, a great blocking back (u know when LSU was going to pass cuz he would be in to block), and is very good at receiving, he has great power and good speed, he has been running into the defense though and not hitting the holes.

His only flaw has been running the ball, if he can find his groove back he would be a great player ( remember he actually took the starting job from Josoph Addai as a freshman and sophmore) as of right now i would only use a 7th or 6th for him.
 
LaRon Landry has started for 4 straight years, including the 2003 national championship team. To make a decision on him from one game is ridiculous. He's a FS, it might be the least flashy position on the field. He's a great football player.
 
I would be quite happy if the titans took him. Looks like a
SS at the next level to me. He isn't the four pick. If we want him I'd be much happier if we moved down several spots , took the chance at missing out on him, and then take him. Rathers, I'd rather have Kerry Rhodes of the Jets.

LaRon is worth the 8th pick, he is very disruptive in the passing game and the best saftey in this draft against the run. he is the biggest too. he's 6'2" 205, benches 405 or more now, runs a 4.4 and has natural INSTINCTS. He has always been consistent to. He is ten times better than his brother Dawan(Ravens safety) and look how good he is doing.

Only us LSU fans truly know how good he is. People watch him play one game (in which they claim to have watched him EVERY play) and they suddenly know if he is worth a top 10 pick.
