supposedly, someone close to reggie bush and the draft is saying that he doesnt think reggie bush will be drafted by the texans with the number 1 pick.

supposedly, the texans havent even started contract talks with bush, but rather, have been in musings with NC state DE mario williams. i just heard all this on best damn sports show period after the astros game.

the texans would be making a major mistake in my mind. how can u pass on a guy who will help all aspects of ur team. offense running, catching, moving chains, helping control clock, which will help the defense bc they wont be on the field as much. i sure hope the texans draft bush.

Ok, breathe in....now out.

There is a thread already about this in the NFL Draft forum, and you might want to read it; it may calm you down some.

trust me im not that frantic....not necessary

This is the fun part of the draft. It's trying to find out each teams thinking process. All part of the process.....

From what I have read/heard, Bush has bought himself out of the #1 pick by demanding what our front office thinks is too much money, thus we are trying to start negotiations with Williams. They way I see it is if Bush is smart, he will realize if we don't pick him #1 and he gets picked even at #2 he will get less money.

But we haven't started to negotiate with Mario yet. How do we know that he has priced himself out of the #1 pick if they haven't negotiated yet? If there has been no negotiations, there can't be any pricing out of the first pick.

I've never seen a team refuse to even negotiate with a player that they wanted because their first offer was too high. That is the whole point of negotiation. Bush offers high, Texans offer low, they settle in the middle.

Texans | R. Bush the pick – unless he prices himself out of the spot
Sun, 16 Apr 2006 06:59:56 -0700

John McClain, of the Houston Chronicle, reports the only way the Houston Texans will not take USC RB Reggie Bush with the top pick in the NFL Draft is if his agent, Joel Segal, prices him out of the top pick. If that happens, the Texans will turn to defensive help, probably North Carolina State DE Mario Williams. "I've always felt that your first-round pick's going to start, and after that, you want to be in position to draft the best player available," general manager Charley Casserly said. "You don't want to have to force the pick. You want to give yourself some flexibility. Right now, we could line up and play with the players we've got."

Yet, in addition to trying to start up contract talks with USC running back Reggie Bush, the Houston Texans continue reaching out to North Carolina State defensive end Mario Williams to get him to try to negotiate on a contract. Williams is leery about being used as leverage, but the Texans insist it is not about that.

OK. This says that if Bush prices himself out of the first pick then we will not take him. It doesn't say that we won't negotiate with him because he is asking too much. If Bush has one price on his mind and is defiant in lowering it, then yes we will pass, but it's not like Ferens is going to call up Segal and ask how much Bush wants and then say nice knowing you after Segal makes his first offer.

Actually I posted the wrong article, the article I had (which I cannot find now) basically said Bush had already priced himself out of the first pick as far as our front office is concerned.

I don't think that someone can price himself out of a pick without having any negotiations. If that is true, then the front office is more inept than I thought.

I have a feeling that you misread that article.

No I didn't misread it, it has nothing to do with negotiations. Bush and his agent have their asking price set already. If someone has what they want set and say they will not take less then negotiations won't happen. If all we had to do was go in and negotiate, why would we be trying to negotiate with Williams now also? Then we'd be negotiating with 2 players at the same time. Think about this, Carr's contract was done 2 weeks before the draft, we have 11 days until draft day. And from www.kffl.com
As of Monday, April 17, the Texans had not had any contract discussions with Bush and his representatives. When Bush was in Houston, a certain segment of the organization never introduced itself to the running back. The Texans know they have a dependable running back and kick return man, the two spots Bush fills. A person in the Bush camp said Monday, "Do I have a feeling that Reggie is going to Houston? No, I have a feeling that he's not."

It's not insane at all. In fact, it's common sense since the Texans have Davis and need a lot more help elsewhere.

This draft is not about the future of Bush, it is about the future of the Texans.

I think the Texans are already priced out at RB and WR. You add Bush to that mix and we are considrebaly out of whack. During Bush's visit they may have discussed price, rather than negotiate.

I earnestly believe as I did in early January that we call Bush's name on draft day and move him. We hold all of the cards and should maintain that leverage through the first 3 picks. FA has been good this year filling needs, if we wind up keeping Bush, fine. It will be fun, but we will never win a playoff game with so much money invested on offense in my opinion.

Once again, your bias shows through. We have too much invested in offense? How much do we have invested in the dline? We just signed Weaver to a big FA deal. We signed Robaire Smith to a huge deal. We signed Payne to a large deal. We have a #1 draft pick and associated salary in Babin as well. Adding Williams and his overall #1 deal to the mix ties up a ton of money in dline, but somehow I am sure you will overlook that little fact. Besides that, it seemed to work okay for the Rams a few years ago, and others have done it as well. Other teams hav been unbalanced defensively....the Ravens come to mind. Get this in your head - there is more than one way to skin a cat, and this whole notion that you have to be balanced money wise is just pure foolishness.

You are correct in your own porknostication. I am biased for the Texans to do what is best for the team given their current personnel, spend, cap and need. That is trade down or take the player that helps you out the most right away on defense.

The Rams had a very good defense the year they won the SB and the Ravens won it all due to defense ergo the saying "Defense wins Championships."

There are many ways to skin a cat, but only so many dollars to build a football team within a finite cap. Yeah you are right balance is a bad thing.

Having too much money tied up in the offensive skill positions is a legitimate concern. Is any running back, a part time one at that, worth a potential $60+ M investment? I don't know. Just look at your examples; the rams had a QB in Warner from the arena leagues, and when he hit the skids they let him walk because they had another guy on a rookie contract who could do the same thing. They just had to let one of their best defensive players in Archuelta walk, surely because they couldn't pay him market value.

The Ravens are picked every year to be playoff contenders, but they have suffered from injuries, and poor QB play. Boller was a 19th pick and still playing on his rookie contract, he makes a fraction of what Carr does and the results have been about the same.

Like you said, it is wise to balance of your money. If Bush is shooting for the stars like the media is saying, then the scales may fall out of wack...
