The Texans sticky situation?

OK we've gotten ourselves into a tough spot. Here's what I mean:

First, we had so many holes on this team going into the offseason that we had to be extremely active in FA. We signed Weaver, Moulds, Flannagan, to very large contracts, and cut Walker who gives us a huge cap hit.

Next, both Bush and Young had very successful pro days and have become incredibly hyped. Bush in particular is already getting contract deals similar to LeBron James in basketball, which for an NFL player, is just scary. Young is a QB with a good story, RB is a HB with amazing marketability. The result? Both want huge paydays if they are signed #1 overall.

The Texans obviously want Bush, but because of Young's superior Rosebowl appearance, it seems that half the city is in an uproar that we aren't considering drafting Young. If this is the case, Bush's marketability drops and Young's rises. Because Young is a QB, the Texans would probably give him slightly more money if he was #1, but would make most of it back in terms of jerseys, tickets, etc (unless his 'potential' turned out to be just that and nothing more). Any other team, if they drafted Bush, would make a fortune as well, but because we are so Young-crazy in Houston, maybe the Texans think that his marketability is stifled.

We needed DEs more than anything going into the draft, and we signed two
veteran, proven ends in Weaver and Kalu. Weaver is young and on the upside of his career while Kalu is a proven veteran with leadership and vision.

So now, heres how I see our position. In order of our wants, I think it goes soemthing like:

Bush
Williams
Young

We can probably afford Bush, but won't get nearly as much back on ticket sales/promotions with him that any other team would. Plus we've just signed DD to a long term deal, spent a high pick on Morency, traded for the very expensive Eric Moulds, and signed pass catching TE JP and FB JC

We love Williams athleticism and speed, but we just signed two potentially run stuffing DEs in Weaver and Kalu, and have two tweeners itching to rush the passer from the other side in Babin and Peek. Drafting Williams overall at #1 would probably be overkill with $$$ for a DE, and because NO picked up Brees, they may be willing to sell their #2 pick for even less than it should be sold for, making our trade down very unlikely

We can probably afford Young at #1 because of his marketabilty here in Houston, but he'd have to sit out for a year, and with the number of holes we have on this team, we can't afford for the #1 pick to be inactive all year. Couple this with the fact that we just invested a small fortune into Carr's extension, and the fact that we have Moulds saying over and over again how glad he is that we have stuck with Carr so long and thats why he's here in the first place.

So basically, it seems like no matter what we do, we are in for a little rollercoaster ride. Because of our financial situation and current holes, none of these picks are "perfect."
 
None of these pics perfect? LOL. Excuse me but Reggie Bush in the slot and backfield is going to be a thing of beauty. Imagine if Corey Bradford could catch and stay on his feet and had three moves before the defender reacted. Imagine that and tell me there's not a perfect pic in there. The day R Bush signs is the day David Carr gets all kinds of extra time in the pocket and on rolls. If your a 3-4 defense are you bull rushing your linebackers with Reggie Bush in the flat? LOL.
 
I don't understand why some fans are so concerned with the business/marketing aspect of whoever we take #1 overall, we should be more worried about who can come in and make most of an impact and who can come in and help us win games.
 
I would be willing to place a small fortune on the idea that DD will either have to do a major restructure on his contract, or will end up being released after this year. We are in fine shape financially, no need to overstate things.
 
i might be wrong here but marketability doesnt equate to more cap space and it seems like thats what you were trying to hint at. i wouldnt really consider the moulds deal "very expensive" either. we also got great deals on flanagan and jeb, so there are quality starting positions we have addressed but they did not hurt us.

IMO the biggest signing (financially) was weaver who can give us a return on that investment. right now i dont think the biggest financial problem is the top pick, but the fact that we cut walker and there is the potential to cut some other players (wade)
 
It seems logical to me that owners will be most likely to shell out the big bucks for a player if he is going to make it back in the long run

The owners split the revenue on things like jerseys so every team will be splitting the sales on both Bush and VY. Unless you are predicting the Texans will not be successful or will not sell out games if Bush is the pick, a sold out stadium is a sold out stadium. Don't really see the revenue benefit for one or the other of Bush vs. Young.
 
I'm concerned about cap dollars as well. the hype machine surrounding Bush is going to make his contract beyond what we have ever seen. there is no way we can trade DD unless his signing bonus was small. our backfield will make up a big portion of our cap. Walker will come off the books next year. What about Payne, Wiegert and that worthless RT we signed (who's name escapes me now) for top dollar? If we have some of these contracts coming off the books next year then we may be in ok shape. To be competitive, however, we are going to have to invest in some talent on the defensive side of the ball. No way am I sold on anybody we have on this roster being a big time pass rusher.

But there are a TON of fairweather fans in this city that will jump back on the Texans bandwagon for Reggie once they finish shedding tears for Vince. All the people that say they will quit going to the Texans games & quit being Texans fans if we don't draft Vince are the same kind of people that said they would leave the country if President Bush got re-elected. They're still here. So will Texans fans. They will be upset at first, but once they realize that Reggie will make plays and put us in the national spotlight more, they will live. Just take LeBron & the Cavs for example. If you brought up the Cavs before LeBron played there, all anyone ever thought of was Jordan hitting that winning shot over Craig Ehlo. LeBron has put that franchise on the NBA map. Reggie can/will do the same for us. Look how bad we have been for 4 years & there has never been a problem selling tickets. As far as jersey sales, the team only gets a very very minor percent of the profits. It goes to the NFL. I'm rambling now, so I will stop. Just my opinion. :two cents:

Great Points. It is funny how everyone says we can't afford Bush, but we can afford Young. Thier contract would be about the same. Also, what makes people believe that there will not be sell outs if bush is selected?

Some fans need to look at the big picture.

I know that we will draft Bush. I am fine with that. I really wanted to trade back (Look at my Avatar) and get Hawk, V. Davis, M. Huff or any other postion we could get. I know that is very unlikely though.
 
Thanks Cap1. I don't believe selling tickets will be a problem. I believe GETTING tickets will be a problem. Especially with how potentially exciting this offense will be.:redtowel:

huh? unless i missed something there has been no talk about how much Bush will get.

Also.. we wouldnt sign players to contracts in FA that make it impossible for us to sign a #1 pick. ALSO...you dont really get paid for potential in the NFL.. you get paid based on what other players at your position get paid. Bush will make similar money to other top five RBs that were drafted in the last 5 years or so.
 
I'm pretty sure this huge contract that RB is supposedly going to get is slightly overblown. Every year the team with the top pick looks at previous seasons top picks to get an idea of what kind of inflation has happened. RB cannot demand too much money from the Texans because they have the rights to him. If he holds out, its greatly disappointing, but not detrimental, and could possibly hurt him in the end. i.e. take the money originally offered, miss a few weeks of camp, give DD enough time to establish himself, and do whatever Cedric Benson did last year when he held out. The Texans currently hold the upper hand, and will offer him a respectable contract. We are good to our players.

we will never get the kind of love that the Yankees do. this is Houston, no matter which team is representing this city, the team we play against will always get more love, sad but true.

This was referring to shoe deals, endoresments, etc. those kinds of things, not the actual money he will be making. y ou can't compare one sport to another
 
Ahhh I see. Well his endorsements really dont affect us. Actually helps us get more exposure, so I dont really see how this has any bearing on anything.

As for us not getting as much marketability out of Bush as other teams would, I dont see that either. We may get MORE marketability from getting Young, but it would quickly dwindle away once people started to realize that he will be sitting on the bench for a couple seasons.

Honestly I dont see how drafting any of these three players hurts us (well..except Young).. both Bush and Williams would be on the field making a difference.. it doesnt really matter if we have more money tied up in DE or RB..so long as we have our holes filled. Young would be sitting the bench, which would not help us in the least, so I would say he is not worth taking, from a financial point of view.
 
I've heard of some deals for Bush, but nowhere near what Lebron got. I think I read he is doing a deal w/ Addidas for 5 million and another deal that slipped my mind, I want to say Subway but I could be totally off.
 
I believe there has been a lot of misunderstanding on that statement about Reggie Bush getting LeBron type shoe deals. The statement was that Reggie will be receiving the NFL equivalent of a LeBron type shoe deal (this is substantially lower than LeBron's nike contract).
 
Personally, I don't believe he will/would hold out. I think many of us here have been burned so bad in the past (Orlando Pace, Carlos Beltran) that we are expecting the worst.:twocents:
 
This looks like a good situation to me. I'm happy with Young or Bush and glad we are the team with the choice. Beats selecting where the Browns are picking from (at least this year). We have the rest of the draft to find defenders or to fill holes.

Actually the majority of Walker's dead money ($5.5 unless they take more this year) will hit next year (in '07).

Flanagan and Moulds' contracts were nothing capwise. The other killer is Wade's.

This will probably be DD's last year. He will only have 3 million of unaccounted for signing bonus proration after this season so that won't be a cap killer come February/March. DD's '07 number is the same as Payne's ($4.6). Payne and Wong may also be playing their last year with the Texans in '06.
