The Texans are taking "tha Eraser"?!

With the Texans season over, everyones attention has gone to free agency and the draft. The consensus, it seems, in this draft and offseason is to address the S, CB, OL, DL First. Lets face it, those are our most glaring needs.:shades:

Almost every person has us taking LaRon Landry with the 8th pick in the upcoming draft. No one says anything about Reggie Nelson.

LaRon didn't impress me at all in the Sugar Bowl against an obvious weaker opponent. He is big, and can lay the wood, but his coverage is suspect. Someone on this board said he is good at everything, but not great in anything.

Look at Reggie Nelson, aka the Eraser. This kid is a ballhawk, can intimidate people, lay wood, cover, and block punts. The safeties for Florida combined for 14 interceptions this season! 14! Nelson has better speed, and is taller but not as built as Landry. I will be willing to trade better coverage skills over build any day, plus Nelson has plenty of time to bulk up if need be. I think he is the closest to being the next Brian Dawkins, and you cant deny how a premier safety can change games and even seasons, as in the case of the Eagles this season.

Dont get me wrong, I would like to see us draft one of these guys in the first, and finish building this defense. The Texans could be the next sleeping giant that no one is excited to play against. See Bears and Ravens.

:secret: Here is a few clips on the Eraser doing the darn thing. Check it out.

With that being said, I wouldn't be opposed to DL or OL in the second either. Okoye, Pittcock, Ryan Kalil, even an outside linebacker to compliment Ryans.

There are many holes and many options through Free agency and the draft. Nelson is the best 8th overall pick in my opinion. But, thats what makes it such a great debate, but this team WILL be better! :yahoo:

A couple of things...

Not all of the mock drafts have us taking Landry. In fact, I have seen very few. Many that I have seen have us taking Peterson

http://www.footballsfuture.com/2007/nflmockdraft.html
http://www.fftoolbox.com/nfl_draft/2007/mockdraft_thompson.cfm
http://www.nfldraftforecast.com/mock/coyne/round1.shtml
http://nfldaily.com/2007_nfl_draft_predictions.htm

A couple of sites even have us moving up for Peterson. I don't think so. I would love to have him, but the track record of the Denver lineage is not to draft running backs high. Tough to pass on an explosive back like a Peterson or a Lynch and I personally would grab either of those guys, but it is a philosophy not held by our franchise.

Most of the places I have seen have Landry ahead of the Eraser. Some places even have him going in the 18-22 range. Landry obviously was not incredible in bowl game. But this sucker can hit a little bit too:

Good Lawd! :yahoo:

I wish it were June...actually March / April because that's when free agency hits and hopefully we'll see some exciting future Texans arrive!

He is a good player but I would prefer Landry. I don't like the way Nelson tackles with his shoulder; he doesn't wrap up too often.

People were saying that DeMeco was a guy that was good at everything but great at nothing too.

Im still interested in Landry.

Kudos on being about the first person to not talk about how we're taking a QB or RB first :)

Ding Ding, we have a winner. He also gambles too much for my liking, that video didn't do anything but reaffirm that for me. Landry is a more controlled & solid tackler IMO still a great athlete though & i'm sure he'll make the team who drafts him much better than they were before in the secondary. I think the moniker of "the Eraser" fits Landry better.

I saw the highlight reels on Nelson and was pretty impressed. I also watched as closley as possible in the BCS and was unable to really see anything. They kept saying that the DBs were doing a good job of covering, so I assume it was due in a big part to Nelson. If you look at the 2 Ohio State scores Nelson took absolutely HORRIBLE tackling angles on Ginn and Pittman. That scared me.

On that last site they had Russell from LSU going in the #9 pick. For myself I like Carr but if Russell falls down to us at 8 which I do not but if he does they need to take him.

If we can't figure out a way to land a top OT, I'm hoping for Leon Hall, CB from Michigan. It's more likely we can find a quality safety in Rounds 2-3-4 than it is for a cornerback.

He's a great player.

I believe he lost his mother last week prior to the championship game. He's got fire and plays with emotion...something that we see with Dunta. I'd be all for him if we don't get Peterson.

Two things come to mind when I watched the video of "The Eraser."

#1: He does NOT appear to be a fundamental tackler. Lots of big plays can be given up in the NFL by not being a sound "wrap-up" sort of tackler. All of the guys that were feared hitters (Ronnie Lott, Roy Williams, Brian Dawkins, John Lynch) are also good tacklers that can get a hold of someone in the open field.

Unfortunately that seems to be the way the NFL is going. It seems like fewer and fewer players wrap up. They are going for the highlight-reel hits rather than wrapping up and making a good solid tackle. Truthfully, I'm more worried about coverage skills from the FS than I am with tackling. I haven't dug into the the draft enough yet, but I HOPE we can find a safety that can get us a few INTS!

if your gonna use the #8 pick on a FS he better be able to both cover & tackle :)

laron didnt do a whole lot in the bowl game, but neither did nelson. some may argue, well troy had a crappy game because his receivers were covered by the DB's, well same can be said about quinn's sucky game as well.

bottom line is, landry is more polished all around than nelson and is the safe pick. the scheme he plays in doesn't allow him to roam all over the place like nelson to make plays. you have to watch film on him from his earlier years. laron can do a multitude of things, and you must take advantage of every facet of his game, but i think reggie is at his best when used solely in coverage. laron is the better value because he provides more on the field in terms of what he can do. his blitzing skills and ability to defend the run are unquestioned. his coverage skills are underrated because of the scheme he plays in, like i stated earlier.

1 guy i'm intrigued with is roderick rogers from wisconin. 6'1 185lbs with 4.45 speed. inexperienced, but a playmaker. should be around in the 3rd or 4th.

michael johnson is another safety that would be a good value pick in the 3rd or 4th. good instincts, can make plays, physical, sure tackler. alot of intangibles with this kid. reminds me of demeco in that the only thing he lacks is timed speed. runs 4.55 40yd

good analysis, bottom line for me is i just want to see CC gone from back there & see someone whose a natural at the position.

I am taking Kubiak at his word,

Kubiak said that finding defensive line help this offseason is a must, citing a need to produce a pass rush without blitzing.

With Antwaan Peek being a FA, Babin not the answer, Weaver more effective from the inside I look for the Texans to select another DE in RD 1, Adams, Anderson or maybe DT Dorsey. I would not be surprised to see them repeat 2006 and take a LB in RD 2, Timmons or Everett and again repeating RD 3 with a LT, Harris, Staley or Free. It is Deja Vu all over again.

You've gotta learn to relax a little bubba.
I doubt that most folks on here are outrightly trying to "copy your post."

Relax Slim...it's all good.

You should look at it more as a case of "brilliant minds think alike" or something like that. If you think that he stole your thoughts...then unless he's the Riddler and you own "The Box" then you should be honored.

:ok:

It looks like his post was just copied and pasted...

No honor in that....

I say as long as we get either Landry or Nelson it will be a successful round 1. We need that impact FS player like an Ed Reed and either of these guys fit the bill. I think we should trade back a couple of picks which I think we will be able to do with all the players declaring, get some extra picks and still get one of them.

Your analysis is biased....Have you seen Nelson play this year ? other than the championship game ?

It's actually o.k if you like Landry and think he's the better prospect, but in your post you make it seem as if Nelson is chopped liver...You name nothing but negatives about Nelson, and talk Landry up as if he's all world...At this point I wouldn't put either much above the other if I were looking at it from a talent standpoint...Landry has the advantage over Nelson right now because of his experience, and being more fundamentally sound....But come draft time that's not going to mean much, as evidence of the Mario Williams pick....

basically if you like landry you're not allowed to like nelson, and vice versa.

both would be excellent picks. reggie nelson has more an eye for the ball though, he's a bigger playmaker.

Thank you for an honest opinion...I assume you've seen more of Nelson than highlights, and one game....

I feel the same way...Landry is great, and he's a solid player...I wouldn't be upset with either, but honestly I'd prefer Nelson, just because I like his style of play....

I heard this is Nelson's first year at Florida. Does anyone know why he played elsewhere before? Was it grades or is he a late bloomer? Just curious.

By my count from their stats page:

50 tackles for Landry
41 tackles for Nelson

3 INT's for Landry
6 INT's for Nelson

Unless they pick Russell, I don't care which position the Texans pick for as long as it's DEFENSE!!!DT, DE, CB, S, CB...LOTS of holes to fill. I say pick best defensive BPA in the 1st, then BPA for the rest of the draft. Seemed to work pretty good for us in the last draft.

the original post was biased towards nelson, so i fail to see why i would have to argue for BOTH nelson and landry.

I was actually all over nelson's jock before he was rising up draft boards before i signed up for this forum, but then florida got on a roll and he was in the public eye. i like nelson, i really do, but i think landry is a better fit and would affect the game more because he can do alot more than nelson.

if you want me to argue for nelson, here's something for you.
he's fast and physical, gets good reads on the qb's eyes and reacts before the ball is thrown. can really chase the ball down. doesnt get too caught up in coverage that he doesnt play the ball. hard hitter. good hands. very vocal.

ill break down some negatives for both as well.
landry- doesnt have elite speed. coverage skills are very good, but not great.
nelson- seems to always look to play the pass. i watched a few florida games, and against the run, he always seemed a second too late. was never the one to bring the guy down first. doesnt wrap up, as already stated. not a great open field tackler.

Hey....

That's a pretty good breakdown.....

Now here's why I prefer Nelson a little more than Landry:

I really think Nelson's biggest weakness is his tackling on run plays.....He doesn't play the run too well, but he is top notch in pass coverage. I think tackling is something that can be worked on...He has proven that he's physical, so it's not like he's afraid of contact...He just needs work on the fundamentals, which is something that can be taught at the next level...We've seen that he's a big hitter, so if he can get the fundamentals down he'd be something to watch....His ball skills are top notch and that's not really something you can teach...He has a natural ability to locate the ball, and either crush the reciever as he's catching it, knock it down, or catch the INT....I think his upside is bigger than Laron's...

I believe that if we get Laron we will have a solid player...I think he's pretty good at everything....He can come up and stop the run, good tackler, good fundamentals....I wouldn't be opposed to this pick if it weren't for Nelson...I just think Reggie has the chance to be a special FS on the next level if given the right coaching...

we all know what they can do, now lets analyze how each would affect our defense if they actually played for our team.

if we sign a CB, then we can either go offense, or landry. if we dont take a CB, then we will go nelson. also, if we have no plan to increase the pass rush, that would allow for more time for receivers to get downfield. nelson would be the pick if we have no pass rush.

if we can sign clements, we won't need either and we can pick up a safety later in the 3rd or 4th.

I still think that Michael Griffin is being overlooked among the top safeties.

I'm really high on him but I do realize that he may not be the caliber of Landry or Nelson.

If we were gonna go on tackling ability then it is no question. Griffin is hands down a better form tackler than Landry and Nelson.

He is also a very hard hitter and he may hit harder than both of the other guys.

The unkown with him is his coverage ability. He is a ballhawk when he is in centerfield and he has great speed for a safety but he has always been asked to play the run for Texas.

Does this mean that he is poor in coverage or does it mean that Texas' scheme required him to be on run support on all times?

I dont really know. But I do believe that could be just as good as the top 2.

Why can't we ever just get the known commodity, why do we always have to draft guys based on upside? Don't get me wrong, i'm pleased with Mario & we needed someone of his caliber on this team, but i'm sick of drafting guys based on the upside.

Lets just get the most solid player for what we need based on availability. I'm tired of drafting jason Babins, travis Johnsons & guys based on "If they reach their full potential..........." or "he fits our system........& if he........".

Griffin= SS
Landry & Nelson = FS

I like Griffin too...I just think we need a FS more at this point...between C.C and Glen Earl we should be o.k at that position....But if he slipped to us in the second which I doubt, It'b be hard to pass him up....really hard...

Now that I think about it....Our second rd. pick is going to be hard regardless....There should be a lot of good solid ball players when we pick at #40....

I agree with most of what you say. Griffin had the best bowl game of the three. There is something about Griffin when you watch him play, he is always around the ball. I don't think he will make it into the 2nd RD.

Little early for all this but why take Nelson. Landry is obviously the more polished and ready to play guy. No need to look at upside, he is ready to step in and play at a high level for the next 10 years. Honestly why get a safety at 10 anyways. Neither of these guys are really top 10 good. I currently like Griffin more than Nelson, which pains me to say since Griffin is from queerUT.

Why not get a guy like Meriweather who is faster than all of them and hits similar to Griffin. Other than the fact the guy likes to fight and protect his friends by shooting at robbers he is a good fit. Obviously he is not the model citizen we usually go after, but he is not 5lb sack Ramonce Taylor either.
