The Nnamdi Asomugha Thread

I used to hate that feeling. Now, I've learned to embrace it. Wow...this team has warped me more than I will ever know.

Exactly. I used to be a member of the Sunshine club until teh game against SD last year where some WR named Ajiritoutou had a career day against Kareem Jackson and the piss poor Texans D and dumbass Kubes somehow kept his job to this freakin day and was so effing stubborn about the secondary that mother....I'll stop...blood pressue rising....

Took my rose coloreds off and smashed them as well as I could.

This team has warped all of us. Well, the FO has a lot to do with that.

Ahh...I see the thread is still going strong! I sacrificed a rat so that Zeus will bless us with Nnamdi Asomugha. I hope it works. If not more will be sacrificed!

Dear football gods:

Please throw Houston's long-suffering, loyal fans of our local NFL team a frigging bone for once and let Andre Johnson's recruiting be convincing, guide Rick Smith to avoid being a ****ing arrogant prick turning off free agents like he has in the past and finally persuade the cheap ass bastard owner of the Texans to open his ****ing thick wallet for once and spend some God damned money and break the bank so that we can have our precious: Nnamdi Asomugha.

I want to be the annoying bastard pimping my Texans like I have in the past. My spirit broke when VY tore my heart out on Monday Night in 2009. Give me legit hope that we can field an average defense with Nnamdi which is all we need to make the playoffs. Please give Houston fans who have the worst collection of teams imaginable our first playoff team since ****ing 1994. THAT IS ALMOST 20 YEARS AGO MOTHER****ERS. CLEVELAND FOR CHRIST'S SAKES HAS TASTED THE SWEET NECTAR OF THE PLAYOFFS WITHIN THE PAST 10 YEARS. HOUSTON IS MOTHER****ING DUE!!

I get your point, but the Astros made it 6 years ago....

In what could be considered a set-up move to the big Nnamdi Asomugha signing, former Jets wide receiver Brad Smith(notes) has inked a four-year, $15 million contract with the Buffalo Bills, per a tweet from Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Is the race for Asomugha almost over?

However, here’s where things get interesting:

Shortly after Smith’s signing was announced, Rich Cimini of ESPN New York tweeted that according to a source, the Jets were holding back on re-signing Smith while they waited for Asomugha to make up his mind.

So now Smith is in New York and Asomugha…

Stay tuned.

@HowardIsANet: @NFLDraftInsider WFAN is reporting that #Asomugha is going to Jets HQ. Big news there"

Fake. Can't meet til tomorrow.

EDIT: Plus, NFLDraftInsider has been in hot water for the last 24 hrs due to other people making a fake name that was kind of like his...

but hey, it happens, fake reports when it comes to FAs happen all the time.

On hypothetical $52M, Asomugha would pay $19.6M in taxes w/Texans, $22.6M in taxes w/Jets & $23.1M in taxes w/49ers

That's per year. So in essence a savings of 3 mill per year over Jets, and 4 mill a year over SF. So figure a 4-5 year contract and you have a total savings of about 12-15 mill over the Jets and 16-20 mill saved over the 49ers.

That aint chump change. Then again, most athletes don't do their own taxes or pay any of their own expenses, so they don't see this value.

Impossible to tell what his taxes would be until you see the breakdown per year. It would probably be much less than that because of deductions each year. But the overall point is still fair. He'd have a lot more cash in his pocket by coming here. And that's at same offer levels, chances are we're actually offer more money plus he still has the tax benifit.

Just got a glimpse of ESPN and man all the dudes in that studio are just playing with themselves underneath their desk thinking Aso is for sure going over to NYJ because they will only go over scenarios of Aso being on Aso. Why not get more fans involved, by buying into all the hype and go over scenarios for each team theyhear is in the hunt for this guy.

He's getting paid $52M per year and paying $19M a year in taxes? Don't think so.

I know players can't sign until late tomorrow, but where did it say they couldn't meet in person?

I never saw that clause. They are free to contact and negiotate and even come to terms, so why can't they meet?

If this report is true, I think it's likely the end. It could also be bogus so let's wait and see. If Aso is gone, we need to go after JJ in a hurry.

agreed

BSPN (or ESPiN) sucks

Even if they could meet, look at the source of that tweet. He was 10 tweets, 4 followers, including one tweet about Asomugha going to the Ravens as soon as the lockout ends. Obvious troll is obvious.

There’s been a great deal of confusion among fans, the media and even inside NFL front offices about what exactly the rules are regarding NFL teams’ contact with free agents before full-blown free agency starts on Friday. So we’ve reached out to the league for clarification.

The league office has informed PFT that teams can visit with their own free agents right now, but not with free agents who didn’t play for them in 2010.

Just go to the twitter account reporting it.

If Aso was on his way to Jets HQ I seriously doubt that Clayton, Schefter, Lombardi, Canfora, etc would all just miss that big piece of news.

Lombardi on the BS Report with Bill Simmons:

Here's the problem, Revis makes 11.5 per year on a deal. To get Asomugha today as we do this podcast, he's gonna get 12-14 million and make more than Revis. I know Revis said thats ok, no big deal but it is a big deal. Gotta to keep the structure of your team. Thats like having 3 QBs on your team making over 10 million a year. It would give the Jets a great secondary but would limit them in other areas they had to do in FA wise, which would affect them down the road. I dont know if its gonna happen. Yesterday, it seems like it was heating but Houston has kinda really antied up and right now, I was told by 2 teams in the league that they think Houston is in the lead because Houston is throwing some severe money around.

Simmons: That would be too bad because we all know Houston wont do anything with Gary Kubiak. ... What would he do for Houston? Would that change how you feel about them as a contender in 2011?

No. I thought the quote of the year was by Eric Winston when he found out about the practice rules he said: "We had the leading rusher and we never went in pads". To me, that proves why I dont like HOuston as a team. They arent physical. Until Houston proves to get physical enough....look Asomugha will make them a much better player, no question, they dont have anyone in their secondary that can cover, he'll make them a much better player but they have to prove to me they can do some things that can be effective down the line in terms of physical toughness. When I read the Winston quote, I was like this is evidence to me to prove my point about the Houston Texans. They think they're being physical when in reality they cant get physical because they never practice physical.

The league office has informed PFT that teams can visit with their own free agents right now, but not with free agents who didn’t play for them in 2010.

That means there is, in fact, a benefit for current teams who want to keep their own free agents: There isn’t the exclusive window for teams wanting to sign their own players that had been discussed during the negotiations to end the lockout, but teams do have the exclusive ability to meet with their own free agents face to face. If you’re trying to sign a free agent from another team, you can’t do it in person.

So the only face-to-face meetings between free agents and NFL teams that can happen today and tomorrow are the ones involving free agents meeting with the teams that employed them in 2010.

Thats why that "report" is utter BS. They can not physucally meet FA's other than their own until tomorrow.

Let him.

I said it last night mildly sober and i will say it again sitting here at work. The Texans are a better team and someday soon the Jets short bus is going to break down.

It's false!

Here is @NFLDraftInsiders actuals twitter feed:

And quess what? No post about WFAN reporting that Nnambi is at the Jets offices.

Just for goo measure here is WFAN's twitter feed as well:

Nothing to see there either.

Don't get sucked in.

He's getting paid $52M per year and paying $19M a year in taxes? Don't think so.

I believe players have to pay the taxes for the city they play in. So only 8 regular season games in Texas would be for sure State Income Tax Free, but hey thats good money on $12-15 mil a year!!!!
