Hearing the NFL has hired its first female official, Sarah Thomas, a ground-breaking move. Mississippi native was a finalist previously

On a side note; is there a harder working sports reporter than Aaron Wilson? The guy is everywhere.

A little disappointing. I was hoping they'd go with this prototype:

I would pay more attention to the officials if that were the case.
;)

I hope she can take a hit because some of these refs get smacked around pretty good.

The NFL has hired its first female official, according to the Baltimore Sun's Aaron Wilson.

Sarah Thomas, who became the first female to officiate an NCAA football game in 2007, has previously been a finalist for the NFL job.

Thomas has been on the league's radar for seven years. NFL VP of officiating Dean Blandino said in 2013 that "She was in our pipeline for a while," but noted that making the leap to NFL official takes time for any prospective official.

"It's similar from when a players jumps from college to the NFL," he said at the time. "Getting used to that type of speed is important."

Thomas agreed.

"The speed, yes, is there," she said in 2013. "These are just phenomenal athletes on both sides of the ball. The game has a tendency to slow down the most snaps you get and repetition. So, hopefully, the more snaps I get, things will start slowing down a little bit."

Thomas has previously worked NFL preseason games and training camps, and any promotion would come with an asterisk. She technically wouldn't be the first female to officiate an NFL game; Shannon Eastin earned that distinction when she worked as a replacement ref early in the 2012 season.

Who cares what's betwixt her legs, as long as she can call a damn holding penalty when JJ gets dragged to the ground, I'm all for it

An obvious PR move by the league, but I wonder what took them so long to do it ?

You freakin' people are exactly why folks make a big deal out of these kind of firsts - because it is still amazing that it's happening over your bigotry and sexism. You're condescension she couldn't have gotten the job on her merits is stunning.

I'm not a sexist, I'm supportive and applaud the successes of strong and bright women. And if they happen to also be attractive, well that's a bonus but I know some think that attitude is sexist.
Is she qualified for this job ? I dunno maybe, but if so that's still probably not the main reason why she got it.

Really?

I'll bet she's just there to make a name for herself. I'll bet she isn't passionate about the game. F'ing libs. So quick to give a free pass based on gender or orientation alone without knowing if she is worth a damn or not. What do you know about her? Nothing.

The problem is would you question the merits or passion of a new male ref? I'm guessing no because I've never heard anyone do that. Her gender shouldn't matter, and if anyone is qualified to ref a game, then they should be able tondo so regardless of gender.

It appears she's refd college ball since 07. She's as qualified as they come, but because she's a woman, it's discounted as a "pr move" by the NFL.

Literally can't be worse than what is already in the league.

I can still hear him. "Falth tart numer 55 of thuh offenth."

I admit it proudly. I'm a sexist when it comes to sports. Sue me.

Hopefully she doesn't ****ing suck at her job like Violet Palmer does, or any of the other loser umpires and referees in all sports. But she will. And any criticism of her will be deemed sexist by Those Who Make It So.

Nailed it!

Damn, Showtime. You have issues bro. Is your real name Al Bundy? It's a sport, not a male sport. And she is as qualified as any male. I bet she makes just as many bad calls as all the rest of them. No offense, but you need to step into the 21st century with the rest of us and stop living in the 60's.

I guess we're all going to pretend that the replacement ref debacle never happened in which one of them was a female?

Good luck getting her to overturn a call after a replay, women never admit they're wrong.

I hope she's not in charge of the replays, who wants to give a woman the remote control?

At least driving around town will be a little safer for a few hours.

These are the jokes I used last time in fairness, just consolidated into a little snippet of funny and sexism.

The NFL has changed the face of its official corps the last two offseasons, and that has just a little to do with hiring Sarah Thomas.

The league’s first full-time female official is one of nine new officials announced today, following 13 replacements last year.

That means the league has turned over 22 of 119 officiating jobs (18.5 percent) in the last two seasons alone.

Doesn't help out the publicity stunt conspiracy theorists.

HEY Al Bundy is my ****ing hero bro and a national treasure :foottap: You leave him out of this.

You mean the 1860's right?

I don't care. Admit it some would just like to go back to the 50d's and 60d's or maybe even further back than that. They should just say so.

Receptionist: How do you write women so well?
Melvin Udall: I think of a man, and I take away reason and accountability.

As good as it gets.

Mike

I'm perfectly fine with 30ds... more than a handfull is a waste.

I honestly don't know what difference sex makes for an official. Only question in my mind is can she move fast enough to stay out of the way and can she make right calls. She's been an official at one level or another for 19 years so I don't think anyone could do that if they didn't love the game and she obviously loves the job.

Are some of you afraid she'll actually be good?

Afraid she'll suck like the rest of them but take the heat more than they would just for being a woman.

Kinda like Michael Sam getting criticism for not making a team because he's gay rather than because he's not good enough.

Well if she sucks like the rest of them, nothing's really changed far as the game is concerned. Then again she could turn out to be a female Jim Tunney and so shame the male refs they have to up their game in self defense. We'll see.

And I wouldn't worry about her ability to take the heat, trust me she's used to it. Any ground breaking female like her has to be tough to get where she's at.

Sam could have done himself a favor and kept his sexual identity to himself until he proved himself a good athlete in the NFL instead of making an issue of it. Ms Thomas is not making an issue of her sexual identity everyone else is.

Nope - a story was in the works. They released it on their own terms instead.

Alright, but I have to wonder if they knew about it why couldn't they stop it if they didn't really want the story out there? Isn't there some legal remedy if you're an athlete and don't want it out there that you're gay?

Not if it's the truth.

The truth is usually a good defense for the press. Unless the truth ticks a politician off.

My understanding is there have been many gay players in the league. Players, coaches and organizations knew about them, but it never got out and most did not care. Not until recently anyway. I think Sam's plan backfired on him. He knew he was not an NFL caliber player, so he hoped being the first openly gay player would pressure some team into giving him a shot.

I think Sam would be on an NFL roster today, if he had of just kept quite and not come out with his book and everything before the Draft. Call them intolerant, bigots, haters or whatever you want, no NFL team wants that kind of distraction. And I'm also confidant that he got taken because there was pressure from league headquarters to do so but they dumped him first chance they got.
We all saw tape on the guy from his days at Mizzou and I think he was pretty damn good.

Yes, pretty good. Not starting NFL caliber though. Depth maybe. Overall I agree with what you wrote.

I disagree. I suspect he would have been no more than camp fodder and never heard from again were it not for the NON-FOOTBALL story.

The Tigers sack-leader from last fall who played behind Sam and succeeded him as the SEC defensive player-of-the-year is going into the Draft and they've got a first round grade on him. I'm not Sam is the same player, he's not as athletic of course. But Sam was the SEC DPY and that's gotta be worth more than just mere prestige.
