The NFL’s New Dirty Player… Ndamukong Suh?

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/story/...hanges-lions-culture-makes-him-a-dirty-player

While his talent is undeniable and his fury a good thing, he hasn't learned to properly harness that aggression. It spills out at times uncontrollably and it's only a matter of time before Suh is suspended and his reputation morphs into something not so positive.

In fact, I think that is already happening. I can tell you the league is watching Suh's behavior extremely closely. If it continues he's going to be hit with a much more massive fine. That's a guarantee.

The latest incident with Suh came against the Patriots. It was a brutal game featuring a few skirmishes. Patriots guard Logan Mankins was involved in a beef with a Lions player when Suh approached Mankins and threw a punch. It connected.

He should have been tossed but the game official missed it. Replays clearly showed the punch. How an official could miss a man the size of mobile home throwing a punch is a mystery.

On Twitter, Lions fans showed their smallness by saying Suh was justified throwing the punch because he was defending a teammate. That's part of The Danny Ainge Syndrome. If you were a Celtics fan when Ainge was in Boston, you loved him. If he was an opponent, you thought he was cheap. So I understand that phenomenon and it's happening with Suh.

There's still no excusing what he did. It was totally a punk move and there's little doubt the NFL is going to fine Suh.

ESPN Radio has been harping this and most fans seem to be laughing at them.

Dude plays like a D-Lineman should and he is a dirty player. He protects his teammate who is getting dragged around by his facemask and he is a dirty player…

The offense-first mentality that the NFL has been running on for a decade is starting to get old.

I heard someone talking about him the other day...... NFLN, or ESPN, I can't remember.

What they said (whoever they were) made sense.

He's changing the mindset in Detroit... he's changing the minds of what people expect out of Detroit...

He's Ray Lewis.

♪

He does need to be careful though.

It really doesn't matter if we or ESPN think of him as dirty...it does if Roger Goodell though. Then every extra oopmh he puts into a tackle will be looked at with suspicious eyes and he'll be sitting out games for being a hard hitter like Harrison does.

I don't know or care if he is dirty...I like linemen that are not afraid to get nasty...

Suh being able to draw the line will be the biggest thing or him though...

But man, that dude is a monster...

Yeah, I see a slippery slope coming. This game is a FULL CONTACT SPORT, correct? At the same time being a "I am my brother's keeper" mentality kinda thing. There's a reason Suh was drafted where he was. Certainly it's because of his play making abilities but at the same time he was drafted as a leader and he's become that in short order and doing a dang good job with it. While "punching" per se shouldn't be condoned, what if he'd just given the offender a 'shiver' that put him on his backside in a convincing manner. Would that draw the ire of the league as well?

It's going to be interesting to see how this plays out in the long run. Personally I think Suh did what any other team mate would have/should have done.

Thoughts?

Is there a clip of the punch? Easier to form an opinion with a video.
Here. Looked like Suh was trying to breakup the altercation between Mankins and Jackson. At first, Suh pushes Mankins. Next, he gives Mankins a push to the facemask. It didn't look like Mankins thought he had been punched.

Now this is a punch.

Not a big surprise, plays for Jim Schwartz who formerly coached Albert Haynesworth in Tennessee.

Dude's a beast, period. He'll soon be the best DT in the league, if he isn't already. I think he'll eventually tone down the emphasis he currently finishes tackles with

You could see that side at Nebraska. You just knew he was going to be special. I think he could possibly become the best DT of all time.

Dude can play dirty on my team any time.

He's so good it's scary.

yeah, I wish some of his 'dirt' would rub off on Mario. Hopefully JJ can roll around in the mud and get 'dirty', too.

The term "dirty", to me at least, implies intent. I think Suh plays hard and plays through the whistle. But, dude is not like Romanowski who intentionally tried to injure opponents.

I have no problem with Suh playing "dirty". I see that as a good quality in a DT.

Hell, most O-Linemen play dirty anyways, so I would want my monster DT to do the same.

That was a push and not a punch. I am good with that for sticking with his teammate.

Count me as saying the Suh critics are full of horsecrap.

The guy is getting flak for nothing. Correction: He's getting flak because people don't have the Lions to joke about anymore. People like to have their same whipping post every year, and the Lions said "To hell with drafting a flunky WR every year. We're going DEFENSE, and we're going big."

Good for them.

Unfortunately, if they ever DO get over the top...they'll be even more obnoxious as Saints fan are right now. Detroit has been in the doghouse so long, that the day they get a Penthouse Suite will make them unbearable for about a decade afterward.

Do you honestly think Texans fans would be any different after a decade of futility and 18 years of playoff drought in this city?

Last year I saw some posters suggesting that we should trade our entire draft for the #1 pick, so that we could get Suh. After looking at what we got last year, I agree with them. Suh in the middle of our defense would be awsome.

I said that!

I meant it too. And as far as he goes, I think there's a lot more evidence than a little slap as something you could use against Suh. But I also think you would just be a little jealous that he's so badass he's making Detroit look good. He's not dirty to me. To me, he's just someone the league knows they probably shouldn't try to **** with. Like Andre. Or Ray Lewis. Or Haynesworth.

I see nothing wrong with what Suh did there. He shoved a Patriots player to get him off of his teammate who had just been shoved to the ground.

Man, Suh is going to be something special. I'm sad I didn't know about him until he almost single-handedly won the Nebraska-UT game a few years back. I remember going "WTF?!?! How can a DT impact the game so much?!?!"

Huge regrets that he's not on our team.

What he did wrong was mess with a Patriots player. You can't mess with one of the leagues premier teams. The commish doesn't take to kindly to that kind of behavior.

Funny how that's called dirty when I could pull out 1,000 videos of dirty Mankins cut blocks, trash talking etc.

Forgot, when you are a Pat, (or someone trying to sack Peyton Manning( anyone that hits you is dirty.

I hope Suh doesn't change his game one damn bit. He has the potential to be one of the great ones.

I don't want to sound like somebody who endorses violence or somebody who wants the NFL to turn into some kind of NHL on turf but I think that entirely too much is made of players wearing mountains of protective gear throwing punches at each other.

I'm not going to come out in favor of it being legal, just in favor of it not being something that everyone expects a player to get thrown out of a game or suspended for. I think it would be a good idea if the officials could throw a player out for the remainder of the quarter the infraction happened in and then he could return.

Honestly, unless some gear starts coming off nobody is going to hurt anyone with a punch out there and it seems ridiculous to see the league getting all bent out of shape at this when almost every play ends in a collision that's more violent than anything a player can do with his fist.

...Logan Mankins also said he disagrees with the rapidly growing belief around the league that Suh plays dirty.

“I wouldn’t say Suh’s a dirty player,” Mankins said. “I think Suh’s a great player. He’s got a load of talent. He plays good and he plays hard. He defends his teammates. He does all the things that I would want in a teammate.”

I agree and this is where the league could learn something from hockey (only the penalty box thing - not so much the old school fisticuffs). The league kinda mirrors society in it's zero thinking, I mean, zero tolerance rules seeping into more and more places. Last year, tapping the QB's helmet with a backhand that wouldn't hurt a child would get a "roughness" penalty. I'm all for a safer game too, but when they take the thinking out of officiating so that they can hide behind their rules for convenience, it destroys the integrity of the game.

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP)—Amid yet another flap over his on-field conduct, Ndamukong Suh(notes) is making some accusations of his own.

The Detroit defensive lineman said Monday that Atlanta quarterback Matt Ryan’s(notes) brief injury against the Lions was “karma” and hinted that the Falcons have been guilty of dirty play.

Ryan tweaked a knee when offensive lineman Will Svitek(notes) stepped on his left ankle, but he came back in the game a short while later and helped Atlanta beat the Lions 23-16 on Sunday.

“To me it’s karma for all the bad stuff they’ve done in the past,” Suh said. “Their offensive lineman hurt their own quarterback.”

Atlanta players told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution after that game that Suh and fellow defensive lineman Cliff Avril(notes) taunted Ryan while he was down.

“I had respect for Suh before the game,” center Todd McClure(notes) said. “But when Matt was on the ground, the things he was saying and the trash he was talking was definitely uncalled for. There are certain things you don’t do. (He said), `Get the cart’ and several other things that I can’t repeat.”

Wide receiver Roddy White(notes) said he lost respect for both Suh and Avril.

Avril didn’t talk to reporters when Detroit’s locker room was open Monday, but Suh did—an unusual occurrence because he usually talks on Wednesdays.

The Falcons need to put their big boy pants on. They accused the Lions players of kicking Ryan's feet, which replay video clear proves to be a false statement. It makes you wonder what else are they not being truthful about...

“Do I need Rodney (sic) White’s respect? No,” Suh said.

I'd say if you don't want the horns, you shouldn't mess with a bull.

Suh gets a little emotional, I haven't seen many games of him but I wouldn't call him dirty like I would Innegan. Big guy who isn't afraid to mix it up? Maybe. Dirty, cheap shotter? No.

Suh has gone from aggressive, hardworking, and likable to a petty, dirty, jackass.

Lions are about to go on a serious slide. 9-7 might not be enough to make the wildcard. They'll get no sympathy from me when they miss out, either.

Suh is what you want in a DT in skills, brains, and emotions. Got no problem with him playing a little dirty. Maybe he can stop doing it when O-Linemen quit going after the knees of D-Linemen.

Right? He gets flagged when he takes it too far. What else to you want? Him to be banished from the weight room? So he can stop kicking everyone's ass?

Or maybe Falcon OL could just, ya know, play better.

So did you even watch the video, it's video proof he didn't kick Matt's feet or anything.. I'd take a big nasty mean OL/DL in a heartbeat.. Playing OL/DL is a mean dirty area, quit whining and get the job done.

Some of the dirtiest players in the NFL have simply been some of the best players at that position ever.

Lol I'd take me some night train lane in a heartbeat, Joey Porter, Harrison, Romanski, Charles Haley, Ray Lewis, Johnny Sample, Deacon Jones..

Ndamukong Suh fined $100,000

Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh has been handed the biggest fine of his career. But Suh has avoided a suspension for his illegal low block on Vikings center John Sullivan on Sunday.

The NFL has fined Suh $100,000, a much heavier fine than players typically get for personal fouls on the field, and a fine that demonstrates that Suh’s repeat-offender status has him viewed as a marked man by the NFL’s discipline police.

Suh’s largest previous fine came last season, when his pay was docked $30,000 for kicking Texans quarterback Matt Schaub in the groin on Thanksgiving. Suh had been fined lesser amounts on other occasions for more run-of-the-mill fouls like roughing the passer and late hits.

The most money Suh ever lost for a disciplinary measure was $164,000, when he lost two weeks’ pay during a two-game suspension for stomping on Green Bay’s Evan Dietrich-Smith on Thanksgiving in 2011.

Cris Carter said on Mike and Mike yesterday that players dont care about fines and only Roger taking them off the field would get their attention. I think there is some truth to that

Loved watching this dude in College and don't remember seeing these type of shenanigans back then.

That said, he's becoming an asshat and don't see it changing any time soon

I have reached out to Ndamukong Suh. We believe that all players have a basic responsibility to each other.

"I have no say in the process (despite) being a part of the situation," Sullivan told USA TODAY Sports. "The league did what they felt was appropriate and the matter is settled."

Sullivan, who had microfracture surgery on the knee in the offseason, was chasing Lions linebacker DeAndre Levy after an interception when Suh - a repeat offender who has been fined at least five other times and was suspended two games in 2011 - dived and hit Sullivan low.

The impact sent Sullivan to the ground, grabbing the knee, but he stayed in the game. He said on Tuesday he feels fine and plans to start this week's road game against the Chicago Bears.

"I'm just happy I wasn't hurt - seriously injured," said Sullivan, a first alternate for the Pro Bowl last year. "There's a reason that play is illegal. It's incredibly dangerous. I just feel fortunate that I'll be playing this week."

I'm wondering when the players decide enough is enough and start low blocking the hell out of this guy. It's too bad the NFC North doesn't play the AFC East this year with all of their dirty ass O-linemen. Three players I hate in the NFL are Suh, Slauson, and Incognito. Well, the Tacks whole organization too but those guys I personally despise.

Yes it is. And for what it's worth there are at least a few offensive linemen whom I consider way dirtier than Suh, but nobody talks about offensive linemen in the media because that **** is boring.

Who other than Incognito?

So that makes everything hunky for Suh?

Why is it more boring for OL?

I'm of the opinion that referees are biased SOBs who go into certain games with certain teams with a bias.

a. They will inflict petty penalties for "roughing the passer" against QB's like Brady & Rodgers but will damn near let defensive lines pistol whip Matt Schaub before shooting him.

b. They will selectively call pass interference in cases where a DB was CLEARLY playing the ball, but then in the same game ignore BLADANT pass interference for the opposing team.

c. They give "good" or "poor" spots randomly and strangely enough the good/poor spots always seem to favor one team over the other through the course of the game.

d. They will IGNORE certain defensive players lining up in the neutral zone and in some cases even leaping across before the ball is snapped.

Given my contempt for NFL officiating on any game on ANY given Sunday my attitude on dirty players is this. If a guy on the other side of the ball does something that isn't Kosher you as an opposing player should say something. A friendly warning. If he persist tell him he's on a 2 way street. If he continues you and your boys should either make it your mission to put him in a world of excruciating pain OR have your defense hit his QB so hard that the fans will be clutching their ribs when they leave the stadium. Translation you guys put a hurtin' on my QB we administer an even WORSE one of yours. Call off your dog and we won't untie ours. Like the San Francisco/ Greenbay game. Clay Mathews was taking cheap shot after cheap shot on Cappernik. If I was part of Frisco's Defense I would have told Rogers "When you make it to the sideline...call off your dog." If Mathews persisted I would have done my best to break Rogers' neck.

I think that dip**** coach in Detroit encouraged this behavior and now that its biting his star player in the ass he acts innocent. He learned this honestly from the Tacks organization.

Report: Teammates not sure how to control Suh

During Sunday’s pregame show on FOX, Jay Glazer reported that Lions teammates have concerns about defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh’s ability to play within the rules.

“Even in practice, Ndamukong gives guys the business,” Glazer said. “He’ll slam a guy’s head against the ground. He’ll stomp on a guy. He’ll take little shots at guys. And guys are concerned if he can’t control himself even in practice with us, how can he control himself against someone else’s jersey?”..
