The Michael Sam Experiment

Let's see how receptive these bigots are when someone comes out and can start in the NFL.

Experiment?? I can see that was your words and not the title of the article. Is Sam a different species or something I'm not aware of?

What a strange way to characterize the situation.

Yes it was my words, and my opinion ... nothing more.

I never thought this guy stood a chance. He was used by others trying to make themselves out to be something that society looks upon as good and special, while in my opinion they probably never had any intention of him making the team.

As far as what Michael Sam was ... was a publicity stunt.

So you're saying Jeff Fisher, a long established coach who could give a **** what anyone thinks of him, that he was in it for the publicity?

The guy got a fair shot with two different teams, all you can ask for.

Opened the door for more talented gay men in the future though, so no reason for libs to be upset or for others to celebrate.

There are already gay dudes in the NFL. At some point, one or more of them will be open about it, perhaps because of Sam.

Wasn't this guy def mvp in the Big 12 last year and thought to be a fine football player before he came out and kissed a guy on national tv?

Unfortunately the fact that he was open probably was his demise. Wonder where he would have been drafted if he just kept his private life private? Of course he stunk up the combine, but maybe that was nerves and all the pressure he created for himself. If he would have been just another football player, who only wanted to go out and play football ... he might still be playing.

SEC actually, not that means anything, as Heisman winners can go without making a team.

Was always a marginal NFL talent

At the end of the day, him being gay was not a big deal either way, which is what we call all gleam from this I guess.

Gay dudes have been in the NFL since there has been an NFL, just not open about it. See Kerry Rhodes from a few years ago.

Co-SEC DPOY. But there were questions about his athleticism/game long before he came out. His workout at the Combine only exacerbated that as he performed below average in pretty much every athletic drill.

It's usually tough for guys like him to stick because most teams are almost always going to pick the more athletic guy over the higher motor guy and hope to mold him into something special. That was the situation that occurred with the Rams.

He was smart to come out though. Now he'll have a gig for life somewhere and it'll be solely based on his sexuality, which we'll hear is no big deal for the rest of time even though that's the only reason news of a guy getting cut from a practice squad makes all the news outlets.

^ there we have it ...

Over? Forever? Bummer.

Per Coach Garrett, Dallas wanted to bring back DT Ken Bishop. Also DeMarcus Lawrence and Amobi Okoye will practice this week and both play Sam's natural spot at DE. If I recall correctly, there was always a concern that he was limited at other defensive areas.

Well, we didn't see this coming, did we??????

Of course, because I think there is a law saying if you are gay you can blame anything and everything on that one fact, Sam says he would be in the NFL if it weren't for him being gay.

A lack of talent isn't keeping Michael Sam out of the NFL. But being gay might be.

The first openly gay football player drafted by an NFL team intimated that that was the case when TMZ caught up with him Wednesday morning at LAX.

"I think I was the SEC Defensive Player of the Year last year," Sam cryptically told the gossip website when he was quizzed about why he's not in the league, "... so I don't think it had to do with talent."

Sam, who was among the final cuts by the Rams during the preseason, spent seven weeks on the practice squad of the Cowboys. He was released on Oct. 21.

"While this is disappointing, I will take the lessons I learned here in Dallas and continue to fight for an opportunity to prove that I can play every Sunday," the defensive end said at the time.

article continues.........

In 2014, if a player can help a team, he can be a wife-beating-child-beating-didn't-kill-anybody-in-Atlanta kind of distraction and nobody in any front office or coaching staff cares.

So how many dudes already in the NFL where it is "known" that they are gay except there are no pictures or press conferences?

None that are "out" and Rhodes denies being gay or at least did while in the NFL. Who knows how many are known by one or more teammates.

I don't think anyone would make a big issue of it if Sam hadn't made a big deal of it

So if you are the Conference Player of the year and you don't succeed in the NFL, it can't be lack of talent it must be that you are being discriminated against for being gay?

OK, I guess that Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year Jackson Jeffcoat is gay. And when you go to the Offensive side - OMG - what a sausage party! Tim Tebow - he claims himself to have never had sex with a woman, so no big surprise. Big 12 - Collin Klein, Jason White (twice!), Josh Heupel, Major Appelwhite. PAC 12 - they are liberal out there - Dennis Dixon, Matt Leinart, Joey Harrington, Akili Smith, Ryan Leaf.

So Michael the next time you are feeling down about being discriminated against by the NFL, just look around the gay bar. There's probably a couple of QBs there who understand perfectly.

Except this entire discussion originated from people saying that gay men have no business in an NFL locker room.

If people treated gay people like people it wouldn't have been an issue.

The issue has always been that lousy players shouldn't get drafted because they announce they are gay. He wasn't a good NFL player from the start. He was a routine tweener whose success was limited to College.

My only surprise was that they didn't keep him around for decoration as a "good little liberal badge of honor."

Yep, but they didn't keep him around, which it is good to see that talent wins out over political correctness in this instance when it comes to playing in the NFL.

Does anybody think in todays God'ell NFL if Sam was good he would not only be on a NFL roster, but be hailed as a beacon of light for the keeping up with the times NFL?

If he doesn't raise too much of a stink, Goodell will probably create a job for him.

Yeah but only after his boyfriend beats him up. Hell if that's the way to get a cushy job with the league office I'm gonna have my wife smack me around too, then all I have to do is make an NFL roster.

Well let's see everyone's tune when a good player says he's gay.

When it isn't an issue, no one will care or make an announcement about it. Tell me when your favorite player ANNOUNCES his sexual preference. I'm sorry. I don't remember any player holding a press conference to announce they are heterosexual.

Sam is not on an NFL roster for the same reason Tebow is not. Their talent doesn't overcome the press coverage/circus that their presence brings.

Sam's sexuality was well-known at Mizzou. He was going to be outed either way. It would certainly come up at combine interviews, the same place where Dez Bryant got asked if his mom was a hooker.

You have been one of the loudest squealers on this issue as a Moral Crusader, so to see you say the above just screams ridiculous.

It is because of people like you that this topic is even an issue.

Gay men have every right to be anywhere they want.

What they don't have a right to do, is keep reminding me they are gay. I don't need to know that. I don't need them to "come out". To keep making a big deal out of being gay like it is something special. To have press conferences, parades and gay fests.

I don't need a reminder of what they shove down their throats ... shoved down mine.

Go about your business and just be .... don't be gay, don't be straight, don't be white, don't be black, don't be Republican, don't be Democrat, don't be Christian, Jew, Muslim, Buddhist or Satanist ... just be.

Labels, sects, and categorizations are the undoing of humanity.

They have every right to state they are gay.

And your discomfort isn't their problem, it's yours.

It doesn't make me uncomfortable, its just stupid.

Anyone who thinks in modern society a gay person needs to announce it is an idiot.

I work with a gay dude and he is cool as hell. He doesn't go around talking about what he likes to do in the bedroom and expecting to be treated special because of it. He just does his job and interacts with his co-workers like a regular human being. No drama needed.

The novelty has worn off. Move on.

Obviously the "novelty" hasn't worn off. Let's see there are none open in the NFL. Service in the military just became legal. They're still fighting legal battles all over the US.

You just don't want to hear about it because you're losing the fight.

I understand what you're saying.

But, I know you get how the media works. If Sam had said nothing, the media would have found out and made it an even bigger deal.

The media thrives on sensationalism, and Sam trying to avoid the subject would have just fed more fuel to that fire.

Hopefully, one day we live in a society where someone's sexuality is not even worthy of a news story.

Hi my name is Jay, I dont and never will play in the NFL. I'm a heterosexual.

I mean if it's that important to announce one's sexual orientation, should every conversation even out on the street begin with a conversation about ones sexual preferences?

From what I understand, Michael Sam told all his teammates at Missu that he was gay & it wasn't a problem. What I think a lot of guys here are saying is that if you announce that you are gay, then the media will run with it & it will become a circus & that will be the problem.

If he were to have not told everyone he was gay & he was drafted... do you think it would be possible that he would have made the Rams 53? I don't know that his announcement is why he didn't make the 53, but I do believe there was more media coverage than there should have been, even when he went to the Cowboys.

Now if T.O. had told all his teammates that he was gay, which I always thought was a possibility, then they kicked him off the team, that's one thing. But if they're able to focus on why they are there & play football like the kids at Missu did... wouldn't that be a better "win" for the LGBT (or whatever)?

I'm not saying anyone should hide who/what they are. Just be you. If you get on the team, fine. If not... move on. But that would be a better fight to fight than, "I told everyone I was gay, I & my team couldn't deal with the distraction, now I'm out of the NFL."

By the way (nothing to do with your post 'cak)..... past SEC Defensive players of the year:

2012 Jarvis Jones
2011 Morris Claiborne
2010 Patrick Peterson
2009 Rolando McClain
2008 Eric Berry
2007 Glenn Dorsey
2006 Patrick Willis
2005 Demeco Ryans
2004 David Pollack
2003 Chad Lavalais

Why? I'm sure there are guys in the NFL that "everyone" knows is gay.
