The Houston Texans are now on the clock.

The combine is one tool. If you're using it as the tool then you're ending up with an athlete, not necessarily a football player.

At the end of the day Clowney and Greg Robinson will have the highest ceilings of

being great . Jimmy Johnson said you can't be great and not take chances l

Jimmy Johnson had like a gazillion picks to choose from. Yeah, I'll take my chances on the whole 1st round. Here's my 32 first picks. Pay 'em, Jerrah. :sarcasm:

He hit 5 out of 12 with the gazillion picks . :lion:

He said you gotta take chances when he picked Daryl Gardener while he was coaching the Dolphins .

IIRC I think Jimmy's reference to taking chances was mainly directed to the 2nd half of the draft. In particular he thought if he didn't have a clear cut decision on a player take the best athlete. It's been 10 years since I read his book.

It was when he picked Gardener who looked like Tarzan but played like Jane . He thought he could light a fire under his butt .

Yes , you're correct. Now I remember when he was in Miami. In his book he discusses taking chances in the 2nd half of the draft.

He would go watch the big guys play hoops to see how they moved . Erik Williams , Larry Allen , and Leon Lett were steals .

Clowney looks unimpressive so far against Wisconsin. Doesn't look like he's worth the no. 1 pick.

Yeah, it's hard to look impressive when you're constantly double, triple and even quadruplely being blocked. However that in itself is pretty impressive.

I haven't seen him being double, triple or quadruple teamed a lot today. Wisconsin is just running their power run game right at them. He did make a couple of nice plays at the end but Wisconsin still scored.

It's a combination of things
When you know your about to make millions and your one cut block away from losing millions easier said then done
Plus he is being focused and targeted in the blocking schemes so he is impressive because he is beig phrased out
If they are not blocking him they are rolling out away from him or running away from him.

It is unipressive unfortunately but he is impacting the game just by his presence

He's getting pushed right by the qb and is being handled quite easily by the Wisconsin left tackle from what I see

Daniel Jeremiah ‏@MoveTheSticks 47m

Wisconsin is doubling or chipping Clowney on every passing play

JJ's brother just took him out easy with a cut block, no one else touched him. Next play he wasn't doubled or chipped. See him stopping any pursuit pretty early.

Even if Clowney does nothing memorable this game he still has a top 5 pick sewed up.

Then I assume at the combine he is going to be the most athletic DE by a wide margin easily cementing him in the top 2-3.

I guess its good for Clowney that in the NFL they don't double or chip right? <sarc>

Well Clowney certainly put up an impressive stat line

5 tckls, 1 tfl, 1 qb hurry

Color me unimpressed

It's really weird, because so many of these Clowney fanatics could care less about what the guy has actually done in the most important season of his career where everything has mattered the most for him. Even in those big televised games where the bright lights were on Clowney he didn't show up hardly. Every time I tried to watch this guy and see what the hype was about, he didn't deliver. But since ESPN put all of these pieces on him at the beginning of the season and because of a few freak plays from last season, people refuse to acknowledge or register all of the character issues and more importantly the average play he brings on a more consistent basis. All I keep hearing is that "he's a freak" or "him and Watt" will do this and that, but we could say that about any really good player we put next to Watt. I want to put a great player next to Watt with a great attitude like Watt has and also the endless motor that Watt plays with consistently. Clowney and Watt are two completely different players mentally.

**** stats. Did you watch the game?

yeah I did, and I'll agree that he is a terrific athlete. I think he has a very questionable ethic. We'll know by combine time what kind of work ethic he's likely to have.

Paired with Watt, IF he follows JJ lead on how to work and how to prepare, we could have an awesome dl

1 tipped pass that caused an INT. He was double teamed by two OL and chipped by a RB on that play. Clowney drew a triple team on a 4th and 1 running play that allowed the LB to make the stop on the pivotal play in the game.

Clowney made a huge impact on the game regardless of what the stats say. He was constantly in the backfield applying pressure. If you want to see how great Watt can be draft Clowney. You cant double team both Watt and
Clowney. (Instant pressure on the QB) It also may make the crap at DT (Mitchell/McClain etc... look alot better. Think of Jerome Brown/Reggie White. RIP

Clowney accomplished his mission this yr. He didn't get hurt and will be a top 5 pick. I really cant blame him for this line of thinking. Did you watch him and forcus only on Clowney today against a really good Wisconcin OL? He was dominant.

Don't know where this Clowney hate from today's game is coming from. Dude had a terrific game and the Game Cocks pretty handily took care of a solid Wisconsin offense (who year after year produce very solid Lineman on both sides of the ball).

Asking for the next JJ Watt is not really that feasible. 32 teams try to draft a guy like JJ Watt every year. Clowney is not JJ Watt, but who cares, dude is a beast.

With the #1 overall pick in an NFL draft I want the Texans to draft someone that will die in a Houston Texans uniform, not a 4 year rental. In a hard cap NFL you simply CANNOT sink $150 million into your D Line. Therefore after 4 years dude is gone, or Watt is gone. Sorry Clowney, but I want the guy that won Defensive player of the year to be wearing the Texans uniform 5 years from now.

Clowney is going to be a great NFL pro despite these shots at his character or taking plays off, I just don't want it to be on the Texans.

Hate Clowney for his question marks if you want to, there are valid reasons to dislike him. But he played a really good game today.

On a different note, I need to study Connor Shaw some more. He's not an elite talent, but he's got something going for him. Looks like Jordan Lynch with an arm.
