The Financial Burden of the 2006 Draft?

I am new hear so I hope I dont sound like a idiot. Well I was thinking about the draft and I am kinda upset with how things have panned out. We are going to take Reggie Bush, who is a great athlete and the media beleives he is the greatest running back to ever come out of college, I do not disagree, but the hype on Bush is going to kill us come contract time. I am guessing a 50 to 70 million dollar range, probably the highest paid rookie ever? Now we are paying huge numbers for two runningbacks. We just picked up Moulds from the Bills for huge money so the thought of reggie being our #2 reciever is out the door. If you trade that pick down it is obvious they will take Vince young, and then we are like the Chargers paying large sums for two QB's. We will get alot of compensation and we will probably have 2 first round picks next year thanks to the trade. Thats two first round contracts next year. It is kinda ironic isn't it. I wish they would have been more cautious signing some of those free agents because they gave alot of money to some unproven guys and it could hurt us in the end. I was just wondering what you guys think about the financial burden that is in out current future?

Moulds was signed for very reasonable money--roughly half of David Givens who has not produced as well as Moulds.

It is anything but a given they would take VY if they traded down--depending on where they go there are a host of possibilities including Mario Williams, Ferguson, Davis, Hawk, etc.

Actually, that would not necessarily be the case this yr. In years past it has seemed that way because the 1st pick has been a QB. Statistically speaking QB's are the highest paid position. So logically the first QB won't ever get top QB money, but they will get a good payday. Currently I think Tomlinson has a 60 million dollar contract and Alexandre has a 63 million dollar contract. These are the two highest paid RB's also the proven premier RB's. No way will Bush's contract be close to this range. Look for him to get a 40-45 million dollar deal. Depending on how long the deal is for maybe a 50 million deal but not likely.
 
Is that burden worth it given that we have a great running back, I know Reggie is Good, no check that, great, but the expectations to pay that kind of money kinda has me thinking that it is not worth it. There are alot of reports about his size being a prolem given that every small running back in the NFL has had problems with inuries. Warrick Dunn, Tiki Barber, Michael Bennet, all have had at least 4 injury hampered seasons. These injury possabilities makes me think Bush is just as much of a liability as taking a QB with a akward throwing motion and a 16 point score on the wonderlick. There are alot of great prospects in this draft that are not as much of a liabilty as those guys and we can get them at a much cheaper rate.
 
You can make the argument that nobody is worth their price tag. The thing about contracts is that they can put so much into it. A huge signing bonus would ease the cap hit. Well, I think it can be done in a way that we are in good financial standing for a long time.
 
I disagree about Reggies contract not being in the 60 million dollar range. Given that the guy is procalimed the NEXT WALTER PAYTON will only ensure the record signing contract. Can we afford to have 80 million on our two running backs. Kinda scary
 
If you look at how much we have spent in the offseason it has me thinking the Texans would be taking a huge risk on drafting Bush. I would love to have the guy, it just seems like their are more educated choices that can be maid.
 
That was no a disrespectful remark towards VY, I mean he too would be very tempting to take, but we are probably better off taking the veggies.

While I see where this conjecture comes from, I don't see any basis in fact. First it should be noted what is important is the guaranteed money and the average over the contract not the total potential because that is too funny a money. In any event, the recent drafts show no evidence of positional considerations taking precedence over draft position. For instance traditional cheap positions like safeties when taken #5 make between #4 and #6, not a "safety" salary. Ronnie Brown last year made between #1 and #3 money, not "RB" money. Many GM's and agents have talked about how the negotiations go now--basically what did the guy at that pick get last year and add 5-12% considering what the people who have signed above and below got. None of them in recent years has mentioned a positional discount. We'll see shortly if there is a RB discount.
