This story was floating around on HT.com, figured I'd share it here.

According to former agent and now commentator Joel Corry (@corryjoel), the 49ers have the third-most salary cap commitments in the NFL for 2015 at $149 million. The salary cap is expected to be around $145 million for next season, meaning the team would have to shave about $4 million off their cap in the off-season.

Corry said the team can realize nearly $8 million in cap savings by re-doing quarterback Colin Kaepernick’s contract...

For us, this is basically another example of how other teams manage the cap. Some may have pointed to San Francisco's management of the cap as "better" than what the Texans have been doing... I'll admit the 9ers had a better, longer run than we did, but I believe that's more due to the way we've assessed the value of our players. $5M for Walter & Winston was just silly. Thinking Quin could easily be replaced... & some bad luck with injuries.

Yep,

Baalke is better at cap management than Smith. (Shocker) It's the main reason the 49ers have been to 3 NFC championships and 1 SB in the last 3 yrs. Playing all of those extra games /injuries have finally caught up with them this yr. There's really no comparison between how the Texans/49ers franchises have/are being run.

Committed to the cap for 2015:
New Orleans $160m
San Fran $150m
Arizona $146m
Miami $143m

7 additional teams have some work to do for 2015. All depends on how much the cap raises in 2015, latest have pegged it around $143m.

The 49ers had a decent run, but that window is closing. Excellent coaching, combined with alot of contribution from players on rookie contracts, are what helped them get to 3 straight NFC championship games. But those rookie contracts are expiring, causing them to make tough decisions to fit under the cap. Not to mention, they're going to lose their head coach after this season.

This offseason, Crabtree & Gore are most likely gone... and they need to figure out if they can bring back their starting corners. They must find a way to extend Iupati, but they can't break the bank, as Vernon Davis, Ray McDonald, and Aldon Smith all become UFAs the following offseason. Not to mention, next season will probably be Justin Smith's last season in SF. I'm predicting Patrick Willis & Stevie Johnson will be cut this offseason to clear up some cap room.

They're going to give Colin one more season, but they'll realize he's a better running back than a QB. I predict they'll cut him after next season.

This is nothing new or brilliant. It is done by every GM in the league including Smith who is heavily criticized for doing the same thing. The difference is the timing of the injuries and it's effect on ultimate success.

Dare I say it... I think I'd rather be in the Texans position right now than the 49ers!

I think I'd rather be looking back at success and figuring out how to stay good, rather than be looking back at failure and figuring out how to get good.

Yeah 3 straight years of the Niners topping our franchise's best seasons sounds pretty good to me.

It's funny though, if another team gets a game further than the Texans, they did better. Once the Texans do it, if they don't win the whole thing, eeeh not so much, it's all a sham.

They can shave more than that if they get rid of Kaepernick's trash ass..
