The Boo Birds were out and it was HOT!!!!

That had to be one of the worst games I ever saw. Buchanon tried to tackle like a little girl. Carr running as soon as he get's the ball. No deep passes except from Pitt. No wonder everyone was boo'ng them. The game performance was pathetic. I said all last year, leave the defence and address the offence. Where in the world is this amazing first round draft stud on defence that we got in the first round that we passed on other good players to get?

I can see the future.
New head coach or 2 season tickets and a parking pass going on sell. It was hot as heck in there and I was in the shade all day. Poor people paying to sit in the sun and see that massacre.

i had tickets (season tix) but decided not to go because i wont leave a game that isnt over and i hate sitting through my team getting abused. if i were there though i'd boo too with the first drive on offense being run, run, pass/turnover ... and getting worse after that (how is that even possible???). since i was wise enough to stay home, i just laughed & grabbed a beer.

Until this year I have never left a game early. But now I havent stayed to watch a whole one yet. And to sit in that hot, hot arena was a killer. I felt so sorry for the ones in the sun. Luckily, my tickets are in the south end zone sitting in the hot shade... The person who said to leave the roof open should be fired...

I don't know if this is true or not but I heard (I think on 610) that it is Caper's decision on the roof....that really doesn't sound right to me because I don't see why they'd put that on his shoulders. I would think it'd be the owner's decision but I don't know.

No matter. It sounds like many people were sick from the heat and in retrospect it was a mistake.

My season tix are in the north end zone and I was miserable. I stayed into the 4th Q when I just had to leave. I couldn't bear the heat any longer with the product on the field. I know we're supposed to be great fans and all, but there comes a point when you have to consider return on investment. Season ticket holders are not getting much at the moment, and that open roof yesterday was just insult added to injury.

The stands looked deserted in some places watching on TV. Now I know it's because people were so hot and leaving for a cooler spot or leaving for good. Must have been miserable.

I was in the shady end zone so I had a good shot of the other side, and it was clearing out fast. I really can't blame them, the heat was pretty unbearable out in the sun. It also didn't help that the team wasn't really worth watching anyway.

I watched on TV, and the stands were EMPTY.

I had never seen it that way, and I've watched every Texans game on either my local channel or Sunday ticket...so I've seen a bunch of Texans games to be able to see it and say, "Man, that's a weird sight to see...."

You can't tell me that Bob McNair saw those empty seats and didn't get all hot and bothered. I'm surprised he didn't fire somebody at half-time.

I have Tix in the North endzone and traded them early this year for additional Indy Tix. Glad I did, the thermometer read about 120!!! That's just rediculous. Not worth driving up from Brownsville for that!

I stayed the whole game and watched in disbelief. Whoever is responsible for the parking lot deserves an F as well. Did not allow anyone in the Blue lot off of Fannin and the lack of port a potties was awful. An absolute horrible experience to match the failing product. It must get better and it has to start from the top. McNair will soon be seeing his big revenue shrink if he does start taking action.

Give me a fire Casserly thread and I will pour gasoline on it.

I'm with ya'. My working buddy and I stayed into the 4th Qtr. We were so miserable we stayed in the concourse for about 10-15 to cool off before walking to the truck. Didn't even feel like drinking, just water. was so hot in the Red lot after the game too. I have never seen so many empty seats in the North end zone, even the bull pen was empty. No one there to yell.

...The Texans decide the whether the roof will be open or closed on a weekly basis. They have listened to a number of complaints from fans, however, and plan to consider the ticket holders in their decisions prior to their next home game on Oct. 9 against the Tennessee Titans.

"We receive complaints when the roof is open, and we also receive complaints when the roof is closed," said Tony Wyllie, the Texans vice president of communications. "Moving forward, we will consider the fans' comfort when deciding whether the roof will be open or closed."

chronic

Betcha it's closed till late December when it drops into the 80's.

There was plenty of room in the north end zone for Texans management to cozy up and watch the game from the fans' perspective. A little direct sunlight for hours never hurt any white collar executive, right?

Seriously, I baked in that sun until about 10 mins left in the game and I just had to leave. I maintain that a lot of the fans whine about needless stuff, but there was just no way to sit in the direct sun for that long with no breeze, no Gatorade, and no product on the field worth watching. Even if they had been winning, I would have had to get up and move to the concourse at that point. I'm still in the pain phase of the sunburn.

As a Bengal fan I understand and empathize with you frustration. I don't know how many games I've froze my rear end off watching bad football. Sometimes you have to hit rock bottom before those in charge start making the right decisions....Keep your faith.....

We are supposed to be TEXANS. We are supposed to be tough! We have a bunch of wimps when it comes to football fans. With our stadium, the only reason they put a retractable roof was to satiate the rodeo officials. Not for any other reason. The roof was supposed to remain open for any circumstance other than rain. The only reason the roof is to be closed for rain is that the field would be ruined if they played a game in the rain. Since the stadium has to use trays, it is not the same as a typical field. They have to ensure the field is not ruined. There is NO reason to have the roof closed during sunny weather. How is it that we have become such wimps? I blame it on the Astrodome. Maybe the dump should come down as it has ruined us as TRUE football fans. The elements are part of the game! I mean really, can you imagine a Green Bay fan complain about the sub-freezing temperatures or the ice and snow? How about the Steeler fans complaining about the cold? How about the Tampa fans complaining about the heat? Yeah, right. We are just wimps. We sound more like Arizona Cardinal fans than TEXAN fans.
I think if Reliant was a true outdoor stadium, you wouldn't hear many fans complaining about the heat. With its roof open, it is not a true outdoor stadium.

As far as the diehards from the north, how many of them do you see sitting around wearing t-shirts and shorts when the temperatures drop? When it gets cold, you can always add more clothing. When it gets hot, is running around nekkid allowed?

Man up guys and quit complaining about the weather. We live in Houston it's hot all the time. Nothing a few budlights can't take care of. You need to be complaining about our pee wee football team the Texans and there pretty boy "leader" David Carr. Not to mention our football coach who doesn't seem to get upset ever. He looked like an ***** last game with his jaw dropped. :tomato:

I have been to several open-air stadiums in southern Texas and I have been to Reliant with the roof open (against the Steelers being one of those days). The lack of wind argument should not be used. I assume you are saying Reliant is not a true outdoor stadium because of the air circulation argument. I have been MUCH hotter on a Saturday afternoon college football game than on Sunday against the Steelers. The reason we have people complaining is because everyone has been spoiled by the Astrodome. If you want to be "comfortable", go to the movies. Football is supposed to be played outdoors. Texas Stadium in Irving has a whole in the roof (not as large as Reliant, I know), but it gets hot in there also, does it not? Do Cowboys fans whine and complain all the time about the heat? Probably not, since they were never spoiled by the Astrodome. Same goes with baseball. It gets quite hot in Arlington, yet the Rangers play in an open air stadium. Oh well, I know I am fighting a losing battle. The Astrodome has made Houston sports fans a bunch of wimps. If you can't stand the heat, stay home and watch it on tv! :tv:

I am new to the smilie thing, hopefully that worked.
"Much hotter outdoor games" than the Steelers' game? It registered 120 degrees on the field. I'd really like to know which outdoor game was "much hotter" than that. And what was the attendance percentage at this "much hotter" game? Were the stands packed?

If you think complaining about sitting in 120 degrees heat for 3 hours when there's an option of having a retractable roof closed makes you "a wimp", then I'd say you've attended a few too many outdoor sporting events. Heat will generally have that type of affect on one's rationale.

Texas' educational system at its finest.

Hot weather? No problem...drink more alcohol!!

i guess the question is....would as many people complained about the heat if the Texans would have won? I know that it always seemed 20 degrees colder when the Bengals were getting their butts kicked..

120 degrees and in the sun? That's not uncomfortable hot. That's potentially dangerous hot. When people pay the type of outragougous prices these teams charge, they have a right to expect to be reasonably protected from danger. The stadium is essentially a domed stadium, with a roof, not an open air stadium with a roof. Big difference in the design, and the way the air circulates. I also think that a pro audience is going to have different expectations that a college audience. Whomever said that they have been much hotter at other games; I would like to have seen that game that was played on the equator. Must have been a long drive to Ecuador. :ok:

What I think should be discussed here is a cost benefit anaylsis.

120 degree field heat
Pros - visiting team is from a colder climate and wears black uniforms.
Cons - home team has not practiced in that heat except for maybe a couple of times; fans, the Texans livlihood, have certainly not practiced watching that bad of a product in the heat either.

vs

Closed roof
Pros - Stadium is comfortable and most likley louder due to the nature of it being the first game and in a closed environment.
Cons - the people running the Texans the week of September 18th.

We were overmatched by the Steelers, but what if (and this is a stretch) the fans could have given them that extra bit of energy? Basically it is a slap in the face to me as a PSL owner, since day one, that say's my screaming and yelling at the game does not mount to a poo poo platter.

"But it is a competitive advantage. I said last week, if I were coaching in Houston and I had a team from the North coming down, I would -- with all due respect to the fans -- have the roof open, make them wear black and talk about it enough to have it work in their minds."

From one of the best coach of all-time.....

I think we are spoiled by having the dome and retractable roofs, not wimps. We wanted to take advantage of the luxury when we can use it. :texflag:

GO TEXANS!!

Agree with the philosophy and like the guy who said it, but a low energy crowd does not help a low energy team.

This team needed a shot of something and unfortunately the conditions did not allow us to feed the team the energy they needed. My opinion and will not take it back. :)

We are supposed to be TEXANS. We are supposed to be tough!

I'm not sure if that's ignorance or stupidity talking, but I'll say this -- you're welcome to come sit in the North End Zone with me on a day like that and we'll see how you fare. I stayed out there and I can say that not only was it ridiculously hot (much moreso than our outdoor college stadiums), but it was unnecessary. I have been in the Cotton Bowl in the heat of summer, been to games at Rice, and I've been to games at Robertson, and this particular game, in the direct sunlight, was the worst. Having spent two seasons sitting in 127, I can tell you that it's not the same when you only get sun for the second half of the game.

Um, actually Jerry Jones and the fans have been wanting a roof for some time now but nice try. Reliant is not an open air stadium which is why there are alot of good seats.

120 degrees under the sun with no circulation as a result of an opened 'retractable" roof equals bad judgememt. This is an argument between "fans who were actually there in the sun" vs "big talker with remote in hand".

I am born and rasied in Houston...played HS/college sports here and I thought it was a little much to sit out in that heat and witness a train wreck. I also think it is a lot to expect little kids and elderly folks to sit through that heat as well. I'm guessing next year's Sept tickets will be pretty available as a result of fans not being as tough as you Get-A-Grip. The front office goofed big time...

At least they listened to us and are now doing something about it. Emails went out to ticket holders, myself included that said it will not be open again on hot days...

We have received a considerable amount of input regarding the game experience this last Sunday. As you probably know, our organization has earned a reputation for being responsive to fan input and in the past three days we have fielded numerous concerns from our fans regarding the roof position (open or closed) on hot and sunny days.

As an organization we apologize for any inconvenience that you were caused by the roof being open this past weekend. We also want you to know that we have completed an exhaustive evaluation of this situation and we have carefully evaluated the feedback we have received from fans like you. Based on this analysis, we have decided to make the comfort of our fans our primary consideration when making the roof position decision for future games. Our fans are an important part of the Houston Texans family and we want each visit that you make to Reliant Stadium to be as enjoyable as possible.

This new approach means that you can expect the roof to be closed more often in the early months of the season, but we will still attempt to open the roof on certain game days if the climate seems appropriate for an open air environment. Specifically, when the game day forecast calls for sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-80s or higher, the roof will likely be closed for the game. Clearly, given our need to satisfy the contrasting desires of 70,000 of the greatest fans in the world, we will not get it right every time for everyone. However, your input has helped us to better understand the impact of the roof position on the overall game experience and we will work hard to use this knowledge to create an even better game environment for our fans for the remainder of the 2005 season and many great seasons to come.

Thank you for your support and, Go Texans!

But those young kids on here calling us wimps and things, have no clue as to how hot it was. It's easy to sit at home under the air conditioning and drinking kool-aid, turn the set off after the first half and find something enjoyable to do....
