The best college team ever

MorKnolle

All Pro
With all the recent hype of USC being the best college, I thought I'd bring up the roster of the 2001 Miami Hurricanes. Their team could legitimately have beaten the worst NFL teams of the time, here's a look at their roster and where those players are at now:
QB
Ken Dorsey (Jr.) - now on 49ers (drafted 7.27 in 2002)
RB
Clinton Portis (Jr.) - star RB for Redskins (drafted 2.19 in 2002)
Willis McGahee (R-Fr.) - star RB for Bills (drafted 1.23 in 2003)
Najeh Davenport (Sr.) - FB/RB for Packers (drafted 4.37 in 2002)
Frank Gore (Fr.) - RB for 49ers (drafted 3.1 in 2005)
Jarrett Payton (So.) - RB for Titans (undrafted)
Quadtrine Hill (Fr.) - still at the U
WR
Andre Johnson (So.) - star WR for Texans (drafted 1.3 in 2003)
Roscoe Parrish (Fr.) - WR for Bills (drafted 2.23 in 2005)
Kellen Winslow (Fr.) - now a TE for Browns (drafted 1.6 in 2004)
TE
Jeremy Shockey (Jr.) - star TE for Giants (drafted 1.14 in 2002)
OL
Vernon Carey (So.) - RT for Dolphins (drafted 1.19 in 2004)
Martin Bibla (Sr.) - FA OL in NFL
Joaquin Gonzalez (Sr.) - FA OL in NFL
Bryant McKinnie (Sr.) - RT for Vikings (drafted 1.7 in 2002)
DL
Vince Wilfork (Fr.) - DT for Patriots (drafted 1.21 in 2004)
William Joseph (Jr.) - DT for Giants (drafted 1.25 in 2003)
Jerome McDougle (Jr.) - DE for Eagles
Jamaal Green (Jr.) - DE for Eagles
Orien Harris (Fr.) - DT still at the U coming out this year
LB
D.J. Williams (So.) - star LB for Broncos (drafted 1.17 in 2004)
Jonathan Vilma (So.) - star LB for Jets (drafted 1.12 in 2004)
Darrell McClover (So.) - LB for Jets (drafted 7.12 in 2004)
Roger McIntosh (Fr.) - LB still at the U coming out this year
Leon Williams (Fr.) - LB still at the U coming out this year
DB
Ed Reed (Sr.) - star SS for Ravens (drafted 1.24 in 2002)
Sean Taylor (Fr.) - star FS for Redskins (drafted 1.5 in 2004)
Antrel Rolle (Fr.) - CB for Cardinals (drafted 1.8 in 2005)
Philip Buchanon (Jr.) - CB for Texans (drafted 1.17 in 2002)
Mike Rumph (Sr.) - FS for 49ers (drafted 1.27)
Kelly Jennings (Fr.) - CB still at the U coming out this year
Marcus Maxey (Fr.) - CB still at the U coming out this year

This is a pretty stout roster and it is no wonder they romped thru the season that year and the next season until the national championship gamea against Ohio St., plus they had just lost James Jackson (RB for Browns), Santana Moss (star WR for Redskins), Reggie Wayne (star WR for Colts), Dan Morgan (MLB for Panthers) the previous year. Just wanted to point this out that this was clearly a better team than USC this year.

I was looking back at their roster the other day. I can't believe how stacked that roster is.

Great talent. I do not think I enjoyed watching a unit as much as the 1994 Penn State offense. They were amazing that year.

yeah according that roster we took both willis and andre with the third pick in 2003, can you do that?

My bad, it was supposed to be 1.23 for McGahee, it's fixed now.

a lot of those guys really didn't play that much though. sean taylor didn't really see the field as james lewis was the other safety (drafted by the colts but i don't think he is still in the league), neither did roscoe or winslow since the other recievers were daryl jones who played for the giants a few seasons and ethnic sands and kevin beard. vernon carey didn't start either and vince wilfork was the fourth dt in the rotation. i still think it is a toss up between 95 nebraska and this miami team even though miami has the talent edge.

No doubt lots of pro talent on that team, but I think too often people think of what players do or did in the NFL when they talk of college teams and college players. What these players do when they turn pro should have no bearing on what they did while in college. That being said, that was a hell of a team Miami had.

'01 Miami has my vote. BTW, this season's Alabama defense is the best college defense I have ever seen. Granted, I only saw them for a while in the Cotton Bowl, but I was very impressed. Their offense however...

:redtowel: The USC's team last year against UT this year .

No USC Defense would have gotten better penetration and Seattle's pro bowler would have been roaming the middle as LB.

Plus, less experience for the Trojans that stayed in school. One of USCs better corners is a 06 freshman, the one that knocked away a perfect corner of the endzone pass by Vince.

'04 USC > '05 Texas

disagree, 05's offense was the reason they were in the game. Last years USC defense wouldnt stop Vince. but this years Texas D would have a much easier time against last years USC O.

USC's defense was way better last year than this year. You're talking about 2 DL's that were taken in the 1st two rounds of the draft as well as another 2nd round LB as well as another great LB that went undrafted (Grootegoed). The guys they had in the middle this year were pretty good but last year they were just depth.

'04 USC also had Norm Chow as their OC.

I'll agree to disagree but there's no way anybody is going to convince me that if '05 Texas was only 3 points better than '05 USC that they'd still be better than '04 USC which was much better than '05 USC.

Another point on the current NFL players that played at the U, look at squad of NFL players that have come out of Miami (obviously they weren't all there at the same time, but the U has produced some great players):
QB
Vinny Testaverde (NYJ)
Ken Dorsey (SF)
RB
Edgerrin James (IND)
Clinton Portis (WAS)
Willis McGahee (BUF)
Najeh Davenport (GB)
Frank Gore (SF)
Jarrett Payton (TEN)
WR
Andre Johnson (HOU)
Santana Moss (WAS)
Reggie Wayne (IND)
Roscoe Parrish (BUF)
TE
Jeremy Shockey (NYG)
Bubba Franks (GB)
Kellen Winslow (CLE)
OL
Bryant McKinnie (MIN)
Vernon Carey (MIA)
Joaquin Gonzalez (IND)
Chris Myers (DEN)
Brett Romberg (JAX)
DL
Warren Sapp (OAK)
Vince Wilfork (NE)
William Joseph (NYG)
Santonio Holmes (NE)
Jamaal Green (CHI)
Damione Lewis (STL)
LB
Ray Lewis (BAL)
Jonathan Vilma (NYJ)
D.J. Williams (DEN)
Dan Morgan (CAR)
Mike Barrow (DAL)
Kenard Lang (CLE)
Darrell McClover (NYJ)
Nate Webster (CIN)
DB
Ed Reed (BAL)
Sean Taylor (WAS)
Antrel Rolle (ARI)
Duane Starks (NE)
Phillip Buchanon (HOU)
Mike Rumph (SF)
Earl Little (GB)

Can you imagine a team made entirely of U Miami players? You could have this as your offensive starters:
QB: Ken Dorsey/Vinny Testaverde
RB: Edgerring James, Clinton Portis (Willis McGahee as backup)
WR: Andre Johnson, Santana Moss, Reggie Wayne
TE: Jeremy Shockey

And you could run a 3-4 defense with the following lineup:
LE: Warren Sapp
NT: Vince Wilfork
RE: William Joseph
LOLB: D.J. Williams
LILB: Ray Lewis
RILB: Jonathan Vilma
ROLB: Dan Morgan
CB: Duane Starks, Philip Buchanon, Antrel Rolle
FS: Sean Taylor
SS: Ed Reed

Other than a question at QB, this lineup would definitely be a favorite for making the Super Bowl. It's amazing the talent they've brought thru this school.

you have to give credit to butch davis....talk about recruting talent!!!
larry coker is'nt doing bad either.... watch out for willie williams in 06!!!
i think that 01 miami defense would just straight up punch the 05 usc offense in the mouth and just shut them out!!:twocents:

i would put jim kelly at qb ahead of vinnie and ken, don't know if the miami team you made had only current players.

Yeah it was only for current players, there are certainly a lot of retired players that were very good too.
