The 2005 High School Football thread

It was a fun game to be at. Packed house. Standing room only - and sitting room only. THere were people sitting all over the grassy embankments at the ends of the grandstands. I even saw people standing outside the fence on the southwest side trying to see what was going on. (I was sitting on the 50 about halfway up the Westfield side but I had to get there at 5:30 to get that seat - for a 7:00 kickoff). The NS side sold out before the game and they only had 800 tickets left for general adm. They should have had this one at Rice. They could have had 35,000 people there. There was D-I talent all over the place on that field last night.

Don't know why we weren't ranked as #1 all season. Besides the NS game, the closest game I remember was 60-14.

Has anyone heard anything about Pierre Beasly's recruiting? I remember a guy from Texas was at our lunch giving out pamphlets about UT, but he didn't seem to pay attention.

The Houston Chronicle claims Beasly also plays guard for Westfield, yet Richard Justice said earlier he focused solely on football, plus, last time i checked, Beasly wasn't on the roster banner in the main gym

Rivals has Beasley listed as a 2 star (out of 5). His list includes Georgia Tech, Memphis, Oklahoma, Stanford, Texas A&M, Utah State, and Wake Forest. Last night was the first time I saw him play. He's very strong, athletic and elusive. I was very impressed with his ability to avoid the rush. I wasn't as impressed with his arm or field vision (except for the first play of the game) - he had open receivers several times last night but either was late with the throw, off target, or didn't see them at all - but to be fair, last night was the one and only time I've seen him play so that's probably not a fair critique. He's obviously a great athlete and has a D-I future ahead of him in some capacity. I was very impressed with Westfield's #44 DB who I've heard is going to LSU.

Katy is rolling over Cy Creek 53-14. Even though Katy won district, they are in the 5A division 2 state playoffs because of school population. As I have stated in previous years, the division 1 5A state champion should have to play the division 2 5A state champion to determine the true 5A state champion. The 5A Superbowl!

....or just go to 6A and be done with it. I think it's going to get worse before it gets better, i.e., expanding the playoff field again. There are already 3-7 teams getting in. It's a bit ridiculous. With all due respect to Cy Fair, it would be fun to see Katy play Westfield in a "city championship" but it won't happen this year.

Speaking of big 5A and little 5A.... according to Westfield's website, their enrollment is approximately 3,200 students in grades 10-12. According to Katy's website, they have 2,762 in grades 9-12. Big difference. If you add in the 9th grade count to Westfield's numbers, that would put them well over 4,000 for an apples to apples comparison..

btw ... Katy's next opponent, Beaumont West Brook (8-1) lost to Westfield, 42-14 just a few weeks ago in 22-5A play.

Don't know if anyone is interested, but in 3A ball Kirbyville beat Barbers Hill 36-34 Saturday. I'm a BH grad, and I felt really bad for our kicker, the poor kid missed 2 or 3 PAT'S in the game, then nailed a 43 yarder to give them the lead with a little over a minute left. Honestly, no one thought he would make it, but a couple of big plays later Kirbyville's kicker nailed the game winner as time expired, one of the best games I've ever seen. Hats off to Kirbyville, and good luck.

I graduated from LaPorte Highschool in 2002, so of course thats who im rooting for in the 5A division. We havent been this far since 1993!!

Cy Falls Alumni and excited about the Regional Final this weekend versus Katy. I personally believe Katy wins 42-28, but it will be a good matchup.

Cy Fair ISD has posted a good showing in the playoffs this year.
Cy Fair lost to Westfield in 5A Div 1 by 7 points.

Should be a great one Saturday at Rice Stadium at 2pm for the 5A Div 2 Regional Championship Game.

I think the best game in the area this weekend will be the 4A matchup between LaMarque and Brenham at Rhodes. I know someone who refs HS and he tells me Brenham is the best 4A team he's seen this year. And those of us who live down this way know all about the LaMarque program .... this should be a good one.

My 'Final Four' powerhouse prediction for State 5A Div 2 is: Southlake Carroll, Lufkin, Katy, and Smithson Valley.

Brenham prevails in a see saw battle. I will be very surprised if they do not win state 4A Div. II although I will admit I know very little about Lewisville - Hebron.

5A Div II as predicted. I think Smithson Valley will beat Katy - I was surprised Katy had so much trouble with Cy Falls - and the Southlake Carroll - Lufkin contest is almost too close to call. Sux for the Greater Houston area but I'll say SLC and SV in the finals.

Too bad for Westfield. Once Pierre went down, it was all over.

I was close, 32-28, Katy wins because one they are talented, but the Cy Falls coach coached not to lose, compared to coaching to WIN. He cost them that game.

Good Luck Tigers!!!

Katy needed that game yesterday, they needed to be pushed. I still think next weekend will be a great matchup.

Katy and SLC should be a great final next week.

Beasley's list pre-injury from rivals: http://texasprepxtra.rivals.com/schoolspop.asp?pr_key=29083

I have no idea if the injury has affected his status.

Update: The print version of the Chronicle on 12-11-05 shows Beasley's list to be Ok St., Utah St., Duke, and Memphis. They are referencing rivals.com which is a bit puzzling since that's where I got the link above which doesn't mention Ok St. or Duke. Not sure which is the most current list.

St. Pius X

Their LT, who is headed to the Army game in San Antonio...representing houston, is 6-9 325 as a senior in highschool. He is amazing. His footwork is awsome, he is a more athletic version of Mcneil (so far in his development, in my own opinion of course).

His name is Ian Symonette. Lacks experience but has a great upside so I've heard. He is still undecided. They were just talking about him on the FSN recruiting show.

I hadn't seen this announced anywhere but Texas Tech just lost a major recruit. Greg McElroy (SLC) committed to Alabama. They may like Taylor Potts better.

I saw Beasley using crutches today at school. Does anyone know if he's still being recruited?

Beasley committed to Rice yesterday. A great pickup for the Owls. I had heard several schools passed on him because of the awkward throwing motion. Sounds familiar doesn't it? Their loss. This kid is smart and a great athlete. Major Applewhite is now OC at Rice and I wouldn't doubt they try to use Pierre the same way UT used Vince- since Major worked w/Vince as a grad asst. He could run straight option or zone read effectively.

There's a lot of good HS talk and recuriting stuff here ->http://texasprepxtra.rivals.com/forum.asp

Aggies scored a coup last night by getting Michael Goodson.

Check the Rivals forums for more news.

Anybody know how Strake Jesuit should do next year? It's a private school but recently started playing a lot better teams so i've heard, used to go there but lost touch last few years...please let me know any good websites where i can check this out...thanks a lot!

I know they did well last year after moving into 19-5A - but they are in with Katy so that will always be a roadblock. The last time I saw them was three years ago so I can't speak about their current team. Join the forum at the link above and scroll to the Greater Houston Forum. There will be someone on there who follows that district and maybe even your former school very closely.

They're also in there with Katy Taylor...as much a free pass as Katy is a roadblock.

There's been a lot of re-districting going on so I thought I would check and sure enough, Strake got moved to 17-5A with the Cy Fair schools.

Even though it's an hour away, I plan to attend at least one game at the new Cy Fair stadium on Barker Cypress this year. It's right across the street from where my bro-in law lives and I've been watching it being built for a couple of years now. It's a muther and probably will surpass Galena Park as the best stadium in the area.

Here's the 19-5A standings from last year but that won't apply to Strake this year due to the redistricting. Rivals (Texas Prep Extra) has everything you need if you have time to do some mouse clicking....

Those aren't my photos. You can find a bunch more here: http://www.drumcorpstexas.com/index-Pre-TMEA.html

I have been there though. Very, very nice. Best high school stadium I've ever been too.

And yes, people from out of state, that is a HIGH SCHOOL football stadium. Texas High School that is....

Looking at the stands, it doesn't look like it holds any more people than Galena Park. It's just all that fancy architecture around the perimiter that makes it look much larger from the outside (I haven't been inside). Looks like a gwallaia job.

Yeah and Texas is pretty much the only state who cares. Who cares if you are good in high school sports? A lot of slow white guys running around doesn't impress anyone. It's kind of like people who don't like college sports because they are amateurs ... well high schoolers are UBER-amateurs. I'd rather watch the WNBA.

LaDanian Tomlinson didn't start out in the NFL...he started out in high school football in Texas.

BTW, this is the HOUSTON Sports Scene section.

I don't mean to rain on your parade im just saying that watching a game of 22 guys in which about 1 or 2 of them are worthy enough to ever play football again in their life isn't fun to me.

To each his own.

Mayde Creek is worst than Katy Taylor...
