Texas Stadium Gameday Report from a Texan Fan

gcolby

Waterboy
Sunday I had the pleasure of baking in Reliant while watching the Texans send Chris Palmer off in the style to which he has become accustomed. After the game, it was off to Dallas for the MNF game the following night. There were a few interesting things about going back to Texas Stadium after a 5 year absence.

First, and best, was the miles-to-go sign on I-45 after mile marker 214 and before 215. It has the miles for Corsicana and Dallas on it. Some soul with a great sense of humor has slapped a big white sticker out to the left of the 'Dallas' part that says simply '19-10' on it in big, black, easy-to-read numbers. Priceless!! If only I had remembered to bring my camera, I would have doubled back for a picture of it. If anybody ever has a chance to take this picture and post it, please do. I never drive from Houston to Dallas, so I'll prolly never see it again.

Now for the game notes.

You haven't laughed at an NFL game until you see the inflatable tunnel that the Cowboys run through for their pre-game introductions. Both sides of it have these huge 'Levitra' banners. Makes you wonder how they get that tunnel up: air, or Levitra? Also, the whole time they introduced their players, there was a little Levitra logo in the corner of the jumbotron image. I'm thinking if I'm a virile 25 yr old NFL stud, I'm not wanting to be seen by 30,000 women with a Levitra logo next to my name...

Also, when the players run out, the Cowboys have this pair of flame-throwers (where the Texans use fireworks) on either side of the player as he runs out. The flame is real tiny, and then it just shoots this big ol' fireball up when the player runs through. It's pretty impressive, until you think of the scenes in The Wizard of Oz where you hear the booming voice accompanied by the exact same flame effect when Dorothy and Co. are seeing the Wizard in Emerald City. Once you get that image in your head, the intros become pretty comical. Bring on the flying monkeys! Ignore that man behind the curtain! And bring me the broomstick of the Wicked Coach!!

Their helmet shuffle is for Dr Pepper, and it's a cheat! They actually switch views *during* the shuffling, from an overhead kinda view like we get, to a 'side shot' where you can't tell which helmet you were just looking at. And worse, they switch back and forth several times, so you really are screwed if you're trying to impress your kids with your Amazing Daddy Super-Powers of Observation :)

They introduced Rowdy before the game with a videoboard caption "Let's Get Rowdy!" If only they knew that there is a second interpretation to that slogan, only this one involves a rope and a tall tree :loser Let's get him, indeed.

It was nice hearing "We Will Rock You" again. I can't recall hearing that at Reliant.

The one thing they do well is playing the proper motivational videos at the right time. You know how we all cheer the pre-game video at Reliant that ends just as the ref lets the opening kick-off go? Well, the Cowboys are quite good at having a number of those that play during some of the commercial breaks where the visitor has the ball, so that when play resumes, the crowd is on its feet and yelling like there's no tomorrow. They did not used to do that 5 years ago. I think the Texans could learn that trick and make our gameday experience even better.

Texas Stadium that night had just just as little air-flow as Reliant did on Sunday. It was a bear. I'm pretty dang glad to be back at work and sitting in the A/C, to be honest. Overall, Reliant and the Texans still kick it. I'm glad to be a Texans fan, even if we can't figure out our freakin' offensive line.

Hey G,
That sign mod was done by our very own members of the Blue Crew. In fact when we went for the preseason game this year they took some pics, but I cant give them away.
PS I'll get your pass to you next away game at the Saxon!

Yeah, we missed you Sunday. Joe Texan said you're going to be sitting in Austin a lot this year. I'll have to give you grief about that one next time 'round at the Saxon.

Texas Stadium was off the fosheeze last night. Not bad for a 32 year old stadium..

I too will make an evaluation of my trip to Minute Maid Park on Saturday night to watch my beloved Brewers.

-Extreme lack of cup holders
This is an essential in any major ballpark, especially when rows are crowded and you constantly have to stand up to let someone by.

-Color of rafters
Seeing the color of the rafter pipes made me puke, it was this creamy green kind of color, all over the stadium.

-Fake Sound Effect
When the crowd wasn't really in the game, in say a 3-2 count, a sudden surge of very loud cheers came in from the speakers. Very cheap trick.

-Lack of trust in franchise staying
Notice at the end of each row it says "Houston Baseball" That completely tells me they don't trust the Astros staying in Houston. Yes, it is a good idea on the owner's part.

-Drunks sitting behind me
I know EVERY team has their bad eggs, but these guys might of dropped the f bomb 200 times through out the game. Lots of kids sitting nearby.

Other than that, it's a good stadium.

It was nice to sweep you. Did you enjoy the 7-0 shutout loss??

I had a great time either way.

You need to enjoy the game from a suite, very nice. Plenty of room to put the drink on the bar in front of you. :)

Uh no.. My local AA Minor League team has cup holders, they're good to have.

Sort of like the color at Miller Park??

Miller Park does not have the color that Minute Maid has. I've been to Miller Park, it looks nothing like the rafters of Minute Maid.

I've been to Minute Maid Park and they do not incorporate artificial crowd noise

Well I went and they did. It was sort of hard to notice, but everybody in my section commented on it.

changing the name of the Astros

I don't remember anything of that.......

Sort of like the Cowboy fan that sucker punched a Texan fan while he was holding his kid?? You could have made a complaint and the situation would have been taken care of if you were that uncomfortable about it. I'm sure if it was that bad one of the parents would have said something.

Yeah, sort of like when that one jackass that threw beer on Melody Carr or at the Texans/Jags when a guy's wife went home crying cause she was refered to in a manner reserved for a "street walker" for "sleeping" with a Jags fan.- http://www.houstontexans.com/fan_zone/messageboards/showthread.php?p=49856#post49856

And the Cowgirls still suck and so do the Brewers! Keep your yankee rear in Dallas and you won't have to worry about it. Honestly, we really don't care if you make it here or not. I assure you of that.

No need to use bad language..like you said every "crowd" has bad "eggs".

from thread you linked......

Yeah, in the first post I posted in here, I said every team has it's bad eggs. But for some reason, you gave an example of a bad egg from Texas Stadium, so I just fired a few back at you.

I love Houston. It's a fine city. It's only fair for me to give positives from Minute Maid Park since all I gave were negatives:

-Great stadium
Other than my pet peeve of the rafters, awesome stadium. Dominates Ballpark in Arlington. State of the Art.

-Great fans
Other than a couple of drunks, classy fans. Made me feel at home. Great atmosphere.
Also, most fans there stayed till the very last pitch. Very impressive.

-Train Conductor
That guy rocked. He knows how to shake his groove thing.

Houston Astros- That team got game. Thoroughly killed the Brewers
