Texas OU red River Rivalry

Blake

MMQB
Any thoughts?

Should be a good game. OU is #1 and playing strong while Texas is #5 and has a great all around team.

I really like Will Muschamp and the Texas defense. They are well coached and athletic. Roy Miller is a beast.

I think it will be 23-20 coin toss who wins.

Finally this thread gets started.

My prediction is........ OU 31 Texas 27

I think whatever team dominates at the line is going to win this game. I have to give the predicted win to OU because of the history where Stoops is more prepared just about every time they play. Greg Davis always struggles to put up points against OU. He isn't creative enough, and Mack Brown couldn't come up with an affective offensive game plan against OU to save his life. That is where the advantage has to go to Stoops. That and the fact that just about every time they come to play the Sooners seem to always been a little bit more pumped.

HOWEVER.......

WIll Muschamp is there now and he is a guy that can be counted on to pump this team up enough and have them ready to hit the Sooners in the mouth. I love the intensity and grit that this guy brings and the improvement to the defense has clearly shown. If his leadership and presence out there can result in Kindle, Muckleroy, Arakpo, or Lamar Houston making some huge plays that can keep the momentum on Texas's side than we've got a great shot at getting out of their with a win. Muschamp's D and and presence out there to me will be the key this year and the one extra punch that Texas will have that they didn't have in previous years. The players believe in this guy. It is just a matter of how much can they over come of Mack and Davis's deficiencies as far as the play calling on offense that always seems to hold Texas down in these tough games.

Hookem Horns baby!

Hookem Horns baby!

I agree with most everything you said here. But I think the offense will do much better this time around, simply because of Colt McCoy. He has became a real dual threat. OU is going to have to spy him to keep him from busting a big one and he throws great on the run too. As long as he plays within himself and let's his RB's do a lot of the pounding, he is just a couple of explosive plays away from being the game changer.

I totall agree about the D and Muschamp, he get's 'em ready to go.

Hook 'em baby!!!

My thoughts (I'll try to be unbiased but you know how us UT fans are about that):

The Texas D is gonna stuff the OU running game unless DeMarco Murray returns to last year's form.

Sam Bradford is gonna put up at least 300 yards unless Miller & Houston can somehow create some pressure through those mammoths in the middle.

Kindle & Orakpo will combine for 3 sacks and at least 3 QB hurries.

Texas won't have 100 rushing yards because the OU defense will try to contain Colt with their DE's.

McCoy will complete at least 70% of his passes but for less than 10 yards per catch.

I'll predict a score before the game begins.

Hook em'

UT 27 - OU 21 :cowboy1:

If OU wins it could almost be considered a win for the state of Texas anyway due to the amount of players from Texas on their roster.

I want Texas to win this one so bad, but this game is usually won in the trenches & I think that OU has the advantage there.

Our strength on D is our line, but their strength on O is their line.

Our strength on O is our QB & WRs, but again, their strength is on the line.

I think the lines match up very well against each other. The difference makers will be OUs TE. He is a stud and UT is weak here due to Finley leaving and the recent injury. Remember, Finley was HUGE against OU last year. They now have that advantage. Also, Texas young secondary vs. gunning Bradford and those good WRs, and OU has the edge in RBs. Texas had a tough time running their standard zone running plays against Colorado and it will obviously be even more tough to run against that OU D-line.

Texas HAS to win the turnover battle to win this game. On paper, they lose due to the edges OU has above.

Let's get ready to pounce on some Sooners! Givem Hell!

Oklahoma takes it by at least 10 points. Bradford is unstoppable.

Bradford < McCoy

I'd easily take Colt instead of Bradford. Colt is way to dangerous when he takes off running. People still have not caught on to how dangerous of a runner Colt is yet. He is a lot faster and stronger than what people think and he has great vision when running up the field. His decision making thus far has been impeccable. Granted they haven't faced any tough D's yet, but I still love what I've seen. Bradford might throw a better deep ball, but that is about it as far as being better in the passing game. I'd say they're about even in passing other than Bradford having a more accurate deep ball. Colt has played one more season and has been through a little bit more obstacles. I think he really learned a lot last year having to play behind a much weaker O line. It might have been a lot better for him in the long run with the experience and toughness he was forced to adapt to.

I still think this game is going to be won or lost at the line. Whatever team applies the most pressure consistently making the QB make mistakes is going to be key. in previous games Oklahoma has been way more successful at the line on both sides of the ball. I'll never forget how badly Benson would play against OU and the O line as well. He never had holes to run through and didn't create things by himself either.

Texas will have to get their running game going and this is what worries me. I don't think Cody Johnson will be able to drag players around the field like he has in other games. Whitaker is most likely still sidelined and not having him in there really hurts. Vondrell McGee has been an under achiever thus far and has yet to be impressive. And how many of those short passes will go to the Obbania (Can't spell his name) where he'll get good YAC? I like those plays, but Oklahoma has got to be watching for that I'm sure, and Greg Davis isn't exactly the kind of guy that changes things up and confuses anyone much less Bob Stoops and his strategy. The running game has got to get going and help McCoy out. If the running game doesn't get going then it could be one long day out there expecting Colt to make everything happen in a GD offense. That isn't a comforting thought.

If you dont know who the following players are today, you will after Saturday.

Cody Johnson
Chris Ogbonnaya

I was searching for a good pic of Cody Johnson and ran across this photo that I thought should be shared.

Right now I'm going to have to give OU the edge.....and I'm a Texas fan.

OU just was the better talent........Bradford pretty much has two NFL receivers (Texas has none....maybe Shipley can cut out a Stokley like career) and great RBs........Texas has none. OU also has a good TE......Texas had a decent one, but now have none. Honestly is kinda irks me, this is Texas.....how the hell did Mack not find a great running back, it's going to come back and bite him in the ass.

In order for Texas to win this game, their defense (Dline) is going to have to play the game of their lives, and Colt McCoy is going to have to play a epic game. (5-6 TDs and no more than 1 pick against one of the best defenses in the nation)

I agree with almost everything you just said. Almost. The game will be decided in the trenches and the secondary. Oklahoma has a solid secondary, while Texas is still unproven. I am worried about Loadholt vs. Orkapo, he does bad against speed rushers.
Bradford is, in my opinion, better than Colt. Dont get me wrong, McCoy is a very good QB, but I think that Bradford throws the ball better. Especially on the move, just about half of Bradford's Tds come off rollouts (future Texans QB? Not really but I can hope right?). It will be a fun game to watch.

Bradford might be the better overall passer. Maybe we'll find out in this game, or you or I will change our mind in this game. I really like Bradford as well for the record and I think comparing the two and whom is better is actually a really good debate.

About the Texas secondary, man don't underestimate them because you think they are unproven. There is a world of talent back there and in previous years I'd be more worried because of their youth, but with Muschamp as the defensive coordinator, he has his team ready to play and they are as well prepared every week as a team can be. He has not only the defense believing that they can do anything, but the the entire team as well. He really has brought that kind of affect to the team. The secondary might be young and might make a few mistakes, but I think they'll hold their own just fine especially if Lamer Houston and Arakpo and Miller are applying a lot of pressure along with kindle on blitz plays as well.

I'm gonna predict a 27-24 Texas win.

Even though I think Bradford will go for over 300 yards, I think McCoy will counter that with around 270 total yards.

OU hasn't lost a fumble all year, but I think Bradford loses one on a sack today.

Turnovers & special teams will determine the winner.

OU offense > Texas defense
OU defense < Texas offense
OU special teams < Texas special teams

Look for Orakpo to be in the backfield all day long. He is too quick for Loadholt.

Remember:

Texas leads the nation in sacks.

And they have done that with the front four. I don't think they have sent more than five at the QB on any play so far this season.

I'm going w/ a 23-20 Texas win. I just posted in another thread...I think the TX Dline against the OU Oline is a key. As is the OU WRs against the two freshman safeties of TX.

Exactly...they will send a 5th person but I don't think I've seen more than five yet either. That 5th person is usually LB Sergio Kindle...he's been steadily improving in this role.

HOOK 'EM!

OU goes down the field in 8 plays for a TD. Manuel Johnson clearly didn't cross the goal line until after he was down but the play is not reviewed.

Texas gets stuffed in the red zone.

7-3 OU.

Jordan Shipley with a 96 yd kick return for a TD.

14-10
