Texas Bowl

This year it's Big XII vs Big Ten. The way Texas is playing, they might end up with the Big 12 bid. Texas A&M might also get it, but they may not even qualify this year if their QB doesn't stop throwing the game. Other possibilities are Baylor & Kansas State.

For the Big Ten opponent - Penn State is a favorite, with Illinois & Northwestern in the mix. I'm not too familiar with the Big Ten, so I'd love to hear other's input on that side of the field.

I know it's not as prestigious as many Red Raiders might like, but I wouldn't mind watching Tech play at Reliant Stadium. The first Tech game I ever went to was the Houston Bowl where the Raiders beat Navy. I remember a crazy first quarter, a single play with multiple fumbles from both teams, and my father and I getting quiet when we realized we were rooting for different teams.

Looking more & more like we'll have a Texas team in the Texas bowl this year. Kinda funny that now it's UT not A&M that might not qualify this year, when just 3 weeks ago I figured it just the opposite. Gotta love college ball.....
 
Most of the projections are listing Baylor & Illinois.

It's possible Texas Tech or Kansas State could be selected from the Big XII should they win this coming weekend. Tech plays Houston and Kansas State plays Fresno State so we may see a selection from any of those three schools.

For the Big East - there's too many variable for me to figure it out. Maybe someone else can weigh in on that one.
 
The Texas Bowl will pick Baylor unless by some miracle, Texas beats A&M and gets to 6-6.
They want at least one Texas or Oklahoma school if possible for ticket sales. Baylor would get a decent crowd, especially with them finally becoming bowl eligible. Even if A&M loses, the Alamo bowl will pick them up if not the Cotton.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't they have to select the winningest team? Since Baylor has 7 wins, the Texas Bowl wouldn't be able to pick Texas - even if they did win this week. I thought the 2010 rule only applied to at-large teams

I'm not positive but I think all 7+ win teams have to be selected before 6 win teams can be chosen.

The only way around that rule is conference tie-ins. Like a bowl with a Big XII tie-in selecting a 6 win Big XII team over a 7 win Conference USA team.

I don't think that is true.

The selection process for bowls is fairly simple, but it also has a number of factors that play a role in the process.

Every bowl has two conferences from which it may pick its two teams, one from each. The more prestigious bowls get first pick on which team they want from that particular conference.

For instance, since it is highly unlikely that a Big 12 team will compete for the national championship, the winner of the Big 12 championship game will play in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, which is the bowl the Big 12 has a contract with. The AT&T Cotton Bowl gets the next pick out of the Big 12.

The remaining bowls will choose a Big 12 team in the following order: the Valero Alamo Bowl, the Insight Bowl, the Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl, the Texas Bowl, the New Era Pinstripe Bowl and the TicketCity Bowl.

The bowls, however, do not necessarily have to invite the next school with the best record, and invited schools do not have to accept the bowl's invitation. This is why bowl projections are never 100 percent accurate, even after all the games have been played.

Other factors may come into account. It is possible the Texas Bowl will choose Baylor over Kansas State because Houston is only a three-hour drive for Baylor fans, so it will boost ticket sales.

Here's some interesting tidbits to munch on:

This will be the second meeting between the Illinios Fightin Illini and the Baylor Bears. They first met at Memroial Stadium on Sep 25th, 1976. The outcome favored the Bears 34-19.

Baylor's last Bowl appearance was New Years Eve 1994 where they suffered a 10-3 loss to Washington State at The Alamo Bowl in San Antonio, Texas

The Illini also lost there last bowl appearance 49-17 on New Years Day 2008 against USC in The Rose Bowl.
