Texans Wide Receivers

Heard that Diggs did not extend and will be a free agent. $16 million in dead cap money hits the books.
If I were diggs, I probably would have done the same thing. It's his last chance in my opinion at a healthy [pun intended] contract increase. No way does he want to do an annual extension.

If Diggs signs elsewhere do we get a compensatory pick? I can’t remember all the rules.

He is now a unrestricted free agent. He would then fall under the possible compensatory rules for 20 26 draft. It depends on whom we bring in as free agents this offseason and includes how well he does and they do.
It's complicated. But this first rule to getting a compensatory pick is losing more free agents than you sign.

Feeling good, kind of getting ready to revamp and go another year again,” Woods said. “I had a great time here in Houston, loved being with C.J. [Stroud], a great quarterback, loved our receiver room, our coaches. We’ll see how it goes in free agency."

Shouldn't be much. His production has been declining...
There will be other teams yearning for a declining Deebo. So more than you would think (3rd round or equivalent). Samuels' contract is friendly for the team that acquires it ($6.1 million in salary and bonus). But Deebo will want an extension. Samuels has averaged around 900 scrimmage yards and 7 TDs the past 3 seasons. That's not bad. But if he's looking for $20 mil a year, forget about it.

The injury history concerns me (going back to college). That being said, everybody knows what his upside is (all pro mismatch weapon). Even this past season he had a couple games where he flashed that upside.

I wouldn’t pay 20 million/year. But i’d be open to sending a 4-5 pick if he is going to play out his contract here.

That being said, the trade will likely include an extension for whichever team gets him. SF sounds like they want to give him his preferred destination and teams probably have learned from the Jets mistake with Hasaan Reddick in not making sure the player will actually show up prior to finalizing the trade.

On one hand, Caserio is too cap conscious to make a play on Samuel. On the other, the door is open to re-signing Diggs. Something doesn't add up. My guess is the Texans aren't shopping for WR in that price range, and WR becomes the major priority in the draft.
Agreed. Commanders took on Deebo’s full remaining contract. Texans likely wanted SF to keep some of the $$$ on their books.

They could sign Robinson and Atwell in FA for 1/2 of what it would cost moneywise for Deebo.

I’m not too interested in either of those over a draft pick.

Robinson is a JAG. He just hit his career year 505 yards and 7 TDs. His QBs were Mahomes, LJ and Stafford. Not much left to uncover with him.

Same thing with Atwell. He’s the same size as Tank without the NFL production.

Give me young legs over more JAGS you have to pay in FA.

Go back and checkout Robinson during the playoffs, he was a playmaker. Look at the Philly game and the fact that these guys already know the offense will help CJ out. I'm all for drafting a developmental wr. But I don't see a difference making wr that will be there at 1-26. If you wanted young wr legs last year was the yr to draft a WR.

The only reason Robinson and Atwell numbers don't look as good as they were backups to Puka/ Kupp. But they've performed well when called on.

I agree that Robinson would make sense for the Texans. Likely familiar with the offense that Caley will install. Led the Rams in TD receptions last season.. Robinson would be a good sign, but he makes even more sense with the Rams, who are moving on from Cooper Kupp. And the Rams can easily outspend the Texans if they want to keep Robinson. Not a likely Texan.

Atwell is also familiar with some of the offense the Texans will run in 2025. He's averaged about 40 catches for 500 yards the past couple of years. That's more than Metchie. But not a difference maker. I just think there are guys Day 2 and even Day 3 that could provide that production on a rookie deal. Atwell averages 1 TD a season, and that bothers me for a guy getting 60+ targets a game in a high powered offense like the Rams have.

One guy that has popped up on my radar as a Day 3 pick is Colorado State WR Tory Horton. Horton was very productive in 2022-23, averaging 7 catches for 95 yards/game. A knee injury shut Horton's 2024 season short, and I thought he wouldn't be ready for the combine. That knee was good enough for a 4.41 and 37" vertical. You may remember that Horton was a freshman on that 2020 Nevada team with Carson Strong and Romeo Doubs. The #2 WR, actually. That Horton isn't a youngster and has an injury past may put him into Day 3. I would jump all over him with the Texans 4th round pick.

Any thoughts on Hollywood Brown? I believe he is going to be a FA. Someone with some real speed would help.

Agreed about Horton, I watched him with Colorado St. against Colorado in 2023. He was a stud. A great day 3 pick.

All the Jets would be listening for are the sounds of multiple picks beginning with this year's first rounder.
As discussed earlier, I would offer the 25th and a future 2026 draft pick but not round one. I could see Nick trading out of 25 and picking up a high round two and other pic and then offering that high round two for Wilson.

That's not much more the Texans offered for a so-called headcase aging WR...not a clear number 1 24-year-old WR who is producing with substandard QBing on the biggest spitshow organization in the NFL.

We probably don't have a recent trade of a similarly aged player, because no one pays that price nor do teams trade them.

The last deal I can remember of a similar player is a 2019 in-season trade of age 25 Jalen Ramsey. The Jags received 2 1sts + a 4th from the Rams. I'm sure the Jets would look for a comparable deal for Wilson. If they were interested in dealing Wilson at all.

These restructures push money into future years. It’s a bit like the national debt…keep plowing money into future years. It’s done very commonly and practically speaking…a good move. Yet…I know it impacts things down the road.

There are some decent to good options at WR. I have Godwin at the head of the class. He’s vastly underrated imho. BUT…probably too costly. So who is in the next tier or two and associated cap implications.

Is Hollywood Brown a FA? I’d kick the tires on a number of these guys.
