Texans vs Vikings Game Aug 9 Preseason 1

Jaylin Smith for me. Given CJGJ’s injury i’m interested in seeing where they play him today.

OL is another one. They need the reps to gel. I could see limiting Ersery even though he needs reps now that Robinson is injured. But Patterson/Andrews need to compete in live reps for that center position.

General Mills should be able to give the WRs like Metchie/Hutch/Berrios/Watson good opportunities to compete for the 1-2 roster spots available to them with catchable footballs in the first half.

Then there’s the DL. I don’t know if there is a path for a guy like Solomon Byrd to make the roster outside injury. But if he lights it up to where he can’t be hidden on the PS then worst case scenario he’s trade bait.

Byrd is one of those USC Trojans, along Bullock & Jaylin Smith. Hate to see him go and keep Who the Horton.

Ersery is my guy but not sure how long he plays. He needs to hold up. But im interested in all of the rookies. Byrd/Horton is also a real competition and the center position is up for grabs. Andrews seems to have the lead but i think its still an open competition.

Most of all…glorifed practice or not, its football. Stay safe, no major injuries on either team and a few standout performances are my biggest wishes.

I love preseason football. One, the results don't matter. I don't have to watch the ball. I can focus on anything. Two, I get to see the new players and the players that didn't get a lot of snaps last year. Just pure entertainment, no stress.

We will only learn so much in preseason. But I want to see the simple stuff, the schematics. What do the formations and shifts look like. I want to see the blocking scheme. What will a screen pass look like. There's a lot to see today if you're looking at the right things.

Tommy Townsend, he of the descendent of Goldilocks. It’s trite to talk about punters and such, but I’m a football nerd.

Tommy was inconsistent last year. I’d like to see a more consistent Tommy this preseason, so one more small thing.

And really getting into nerd territory, I want to see the new long snapper have no issues.

Who knew that USC defense had as much talent as it did? Credit to Caserio and the scouting department for finding them.

I think Horton/Byrd/Toohill are all competing for Autry’s spot. I suspect DE we have Hunter/Anderson/Barnett/Taylor locked in. DT it’s Settle/Edwards/Rankins/Foley/maybe Togiai (heard Togiai has been impressive in camp).

Will be interesting to see if any of them get reps at DT. Also interesting to see if Autry loses his spot because he’s unavailable to compete and they are too good to cut or trade.

I also want to see Austin Brinkman long snapping. Will I notice him in a bad way? Hope not.

Myles Bryant is another guy who has a path on the roster due to CJGJ’s injury and Ward’s offseason trouble. Bryant played every secondary position in New England. Would not be surprised if he took safety reps today. “The more you can do”.

If I was Demeco, I’d rest the vast majority of the defensive starters. That unit has been outstanding.they can get some snaps next week as a tune-up.

OTOH, I’d play the starting offense, possibly sans Nico…and of course RB due to injury. I want to see that unit operate at a functional level, largely free of pre-snap mistakes, see how that starting line blocks, see how CJ functions with his new responsibilities, etc. 1 to 2 series is enough. Get their feet wet against real competition. Yes there is some risk, but as we saw with CJGJ, risk is everywhere. I hope Meco lets the offense ball a bit before going to backups.

Another view but also from the Vikings players to watch today. The Vikings have announced JJ McCarthy will start the preseason opener.

This is where having a vet backup QB comes into play. Mills should be seasoned enough now that he can run the offense efficiently enough where the evaluators can get an honest read on the positions they need to see without risking the star players.

Mixon is already out. Aside from Nico, CJ, and maybe Tytus/Kirk… nobody else needs to be in bubble wrap. Let General Mills sling it around so we can get a good look at the rest of the pieces and see if the OL can hold up.

Where it gets dicey is when Mertz/Slovis come in for the second half. I hope they give Lachey something to work with so he has a chance to make this roster!

Come to think of it i don't watch as much football during the season as I do in the pre/post season. During the season i watch the Texans & maybe Thursday, Sunday, Monday night.

During pre/post season I try to catch everything.

Only thing that gets me excited for preseason is a long offseason.......

Wish we were at the real games.... but its just good to have Texans football again.

That said... Im going to be optimistic for our preseason before I return to my regularly scheduled pessimism.

Unfortunately, the starting offense won’t see many snaps at all in the actual games. I think it makes for an inferior product to start the regular season but that’s just the way of the world now.

Injuries are so prevalent in this game anymore, you don’t want to lose someone in one that means nothing. Not that you can’t get injured in practice or a joint scrimmage so I don’t know what the answer is.

If you want to see starters in action in the preseason you have to attend a joint scrimmage. Are those open to the public?

I’ll get on my yearly horse again saying I’d rather see the joint practices be televised instead of the PS game. Some day maybe. It’s exciting that real football is getting closer but PS games do nothing for me, especially now that starters barely play. It’s rookies against rookies and backups against backups.
Zzzzzzzzzzzz

Let’s go Texans. This is the first small step against live bullets from an opposing team. Looks like CJ isn’t playing do I think that’s a mistake. 100%. I remember Watson going down with an ACL in practice and without being touched. I think the benefits outweighs the risk, more so under these circumstances but what do I know. When the offense comes out against the Rams looking like crap…don’t say I didn’t warn ya!

That’s what he’s doing.

Funny seeing that “Visit Big Bend Texas” commercial. The basin, campgrounds, restaurant and everything else up there is closed for renovations these next couple of years. Otherwise Speed looking good.
