Texans vs Jaguars AAR

Positives:

1. C.J. is still C.J.
2. Nico is a top tier WR
3. Dare showed up big in the 4th
4. The D held up well on the last few drives

Negatives:

1. The defense allowing wide open deep balls
2. Virtually no pass rush
3. Poor halftime adjustments
4. Poor run game
5. Numerous O-line penalties
6. Stevin Sims
Is it scheme or lack of talent that we can’t seem to cover anybody? Dinks still killing us..

OL run blocking is terrible. Its either coaching, physical ability or a bunch of low IQ guys on the line.

Ryans wasted a time out in the 2nd half on a challenge that had less than a 0% chance of succeeding.

Trevor Lawrence missed two TD passes.

Never, never, never muff a punt.

Stroud missed one right before the half.

Not every lineman is meant to be a zone blocker, just like every RB is not meant to be a zone runner. We have some square pegs being forced into round holes on the O-line.

Was extremely happy to win but extremely disappointed in the manner of it.

The fact the game was close and the Jags were actually in position to win is embarrassing - They are not a good team. The fact they were in the game was purely of the Texan's own doing. "Shooting themselves in the foot" as they have liked to say and something that's been all too common through four weeks. The Jags barely did anything all game and the few plays they did make Lawrence missed the throw. The Texans were out there playing against the Jags and themselves.

Until it gets fixed I can only foresee an Eagles (from last season) type meltdown for this team. They are getting lucky to scrape out to 3-1 right now and eventually that luck will run dry.

I want to know how Pederson was getting his best WR (Kirk) lined up with Pitre covering him!?! I remember several times all I could see was Pitre's name on his jersey chasing Kirk!
The Line needs to show some damn pride and get mean! The penalties, obviously need to be fixed.
And the 2nd down and 9's and 8's are getting ridiculous. Almost takes me back to the days when ButtChin ran the ball up the middle on almost every 1st down!

Because Christian Kirk is often utilized as a vertical slot receiver and the nickle/slot corner often lands that player in their coverage.

I really think the Texans nickel CB (Lassiter) is playing outside because the Texans don't have a 2nd outside CB.
I think they’re trying him there to see if he can make the transition as a boundary cb…but we could very well see them go cb in the 1st again next draft b/c I think Ward is gone after this year & Pitre slides back to safety.

I can see Nick trading down from late round 1 to pick up extra pics.

I now think CJ is definitely missing Noah Brown. Since most of CJ’s passes seem to end up in a scrambling scrum that is exactly the scenario Noah excelled in last year. His hands are tied.

Maybe, but at the same time most teams don't have a second outside corner of Lassiter's quality. In fact some don't even have a starter of his quality.

Christian Kirk's vertical ability from the slot is trouble for pretty much anyone playing the position. It's like calling your player slow because he can't keep up with Tyreek Hill.

The week before Murray was covering Jefferson

I asked how that happened?

Safety and DT appear to be the strengths of the draft. I would be happy with either one of those positions. Barron at UT is playing very well outside this year.
Yes but if Burke continues as he is did last season, I have to take him if he's there in round 1. The dude is amazing. Also the safety from Notre Dame
Xavier Watts is looking really sharp. I am interested in taking defensive tackles but it looks like there may be some available in round 4 that could look good by end of season.

Finally got to watch the game.

Only reason jags even in this because of the muffed punt on first series. Someone said it before but what’s wrong with our special teams? We were so good last year.

Niko playing like a top 5 receiver in this league!

Love Dare coming out of the backfield.

Mixon is far and above Akers.

Oline is putrid. It’s not just that they are getting beat by stunts and spin moves they are being collapsed by the bull rush. Then there’s the yellow flowers falling.

Think we can trade pitre for Fred Warner?

Pederson is a good HC, he's just stuck with Lawrence.
I wouldn't go that far. he had some really questionable calls late in that game....like calling a timeout before a 4th down try and then coming back with a qb sneak out of a formation that was so obvious, even the commentator called it out before the ball was snapped. ............... & his decision to pass the ball not once, but twice on that last drive which stopped the clock for us and gave us plenty of time to go down and get the go ahead score.

Lawrence may not be very good at his job, but Pederson ain't much better if at all better at his.

We need more of that, especially if we're going to be playing behind the chains so much.

3rd & 15 or 18 or 20... we need someone else to step up & get that 1st down even if the ball is caught short of the 1st down. Diggs did it as well in this game. Of course Nico has done it a few times in other games, but those are usually on those bubble screens which I hate.

I hated MJD because he was constantly catching the ball short of the sticks on short & forever & converting on 3rd down.

Then this needs to be fixed. That was my point
I'm not sure it's that huge of a thing. Slot receivers get schemed open. It's actually a lot less about who's on them and more who is playing overtop. They get open because they naturally occupy the zone spaces that linebackers and safeties/nickles occupy. Unless you want your corners standing in the dead center of the field and getting ready to get run-blocked into oblivion by a lineman or a tight end this is the sacrifice that needs to be made.

I'm already mentally preparing myself for the teeth gnashing and anger for when slots like CeeDee Lamb and Amon-Ra St. Brown get catches against us and the complaints start rolling in. These guys are really good. Their offensive schemes revolve around getting them touches - it's going to happen.

Other teams do not have to worry about our offensive linemen run blocking cornerbacks into oblivion.
🤨😡

True, getting Harris back will help in covering this part of the field.

I believe it’s time for Ryans and Slowick to insert Ogunbawale and Brooks as the starting RB’s. I’d give Dare and Brooks the opportunity to showcase their value and have Akers be the 3rd down back until Mixon and Pierce are 100% ready to return. However, I do want to see what these guys could do.
