Texans vs Colts AAR

Good teams win even when they are not hitting on all cylinders. The Colts always play us tough.

We just won an away game against the team who is probably our biggest rival in the division this year. It wasn't perfect but it is still a 1 in the win column. I'm not ready to spit the kool-aid out yet.
Not arguing that. Just pointing out that the Texans dominated this game statistically and it shouldn't have been as close as it was. But the Texans did win a game by 3 TDs once with 45 yards of offense while the other team had over 400.

It was basically preseason game 1 for the starters so there's going to be kinks that need to be worked out. This secondary will be facing some QBs that are better than AR this season. They better figure that junk out.

On one play his receiver went by Lassiter like he was standing in mud, i.e. his mediorce foot
speed exposed him, and that probably won't be ignored by future opponents DCs.
That wasn’t it at all. He just got caught on a double move with his eyes in the backfield. It happens to the best dbs.

Texans score close to what I was expecting at 30 plus. However, I was really disappointed in the points that our defense allowed.
Derek Stingley look amazing most of the game but was beat bad I think on two plays. Bullock was everything that I expected him to be. Ward gave up a huge play but I remember saying he just got beat by a taller player. I expect to see even more of Bullock. Hunter and Anderson seemed to be fighting good blocking all game but they did tie up the outside. Our defensive middle did much better than I expected as photocopy [my voice-text for Fautukasi] seemed to be in there pushing the middle back. Mario Edwards looked good as did To'oTo'o. Man, Al Shaiir in deep coverage got a shout from the 4 of us.

Tunsil immediately got a flag so.. I guess we can expect another Pro Bowl award?
I found myself in the first half saying repeatedly," Stroud is really getting some good blocking.." and then Howard or Green would wave as their opponents ran by. Hopefully, just rust? The play just before the blocked punt, I thought CJ had said something to irritate the line because everyone got thru to him.
Houston..
We have a running back. Joe has good, quick feet! He took a licking and kept on ticking! I can recall only two runs by Pierce and they were good. If he can pick up say 20 yd a game without hurting the team in 4-5 plays, okay.

Stefon Diggs will get his yards but I wanted to see more scores and he met that criteria! Nico showed why he got his new contract. I was a little disappointed by Tank Dell but I don't think it was all on him.
More after I have slept.

Both of those deep shots were on Ward. The 1st TD Stingley was in trail position and is really guarding for anything that breaks in front of him and/or the deep out to the sideline. Ward has the deep middle. Ward sitting back there flat footed just letting Pierce run right by him.

The other deep shot that Pierce caught late was basically Ward doing the same ****.

You can blame Stingley for the missed TD pass AR15 missed to Mitchell tho..but there was a reason he missed it. Outside of his obvious accuracy issues, it looked like he expected Mitchell to run that quick 5 yard curl….which he did..but then Mitchell ad-libed and took off up the sideline, which Richardson …..nor Stingley were expecting. Richardson had to double clutch it and then had to layer it up there. It Looks like an easy throw to us but it’s not..especially when you don’t know what your WR is doing. Had Richardson just threw that short 5 yard curl route, Stingley was all over that. Instead he got caught with his pants down gambling there.

Anthony Richardson. I have some respect for that dude. Put his head down and went to work. Got sacked, (tossed hard) and got up and smiled. Threw the football like it has its own jetpack. He really looks like the physical specimen the media was going on and on about pre-draft. If he can stay healthy and has the coaching staff to train him up, he is going to be a fun watch in the years to come.

As for the rest of the Colts? Zero respect!

Good win Texans! We have some things to iron out for sure, but a win is a win is a win. And we got to show off our shiny new free agents as well!!

I agree about all these except the 2 point try. I think it's absolutely justified to go for it there and is an obvious move to make it a touchdown game.

I'd also add Stroud - He was a little off and made some uncharacteristic decisions and some off throws. Fully expect him to get up to speed soon, but this wasn't a great game for him. He did come up big when required so that shouldn't go unnoted either.
True about Stroud, but he made a beautiful throw and Collins made a great catch on that final drive when the team needed them the most.

We peed away three points at the half. Ryan took the blame for it, but I'm not sure who's fault it was. I would have thought the referee would have done a better job of explaining the ten second run off after he had put 15 seconds back on the clock an that the clock was still running. I'm pretty sure that if coach had been alerted he would have put the field goal team out there.
Plus the fact the Colts called a timeout to let the refs review the play. The clock should've never been started. The refs screwed up plain and simple.

So, there was a lot that happened on that play that certainly explains why there was confusion about whether the clock would run before the snap. However, the question I would love to ask Demeco is this:

You had already kicked two field goals from the same spot on the field. Despite all the confusion, I assume it became clear at some point before the play that there were 5 seconds before halftime. So, why was it decided to attempt one more quick pass play within such a tight window of time considering the confidence the team clearly had already demonstrated with Fairbairn from that range?.. Why risk a sack, a slip, a catch in bounds, etc... to attempt a 48 yarder instead a 52 yarder, ESPECIALLY considering those two 50 yard kicks were both on 4th and 1s.

The other question, somewhat related: What was the thinking that led you to kick the two 50 yarders in the first half instead of going for it on 4th and short... but then also choose to go for 2 pt converstion in the first half instead of kicking the PAT?

Just a bit of next day reflection has me thinking that the Colts are probably a pretty good team overall and between their running game and a very dangerous if young QB winning ugly is probably a better result than it felt like on the day.

2) Pass rush. Colts neutralized the pass rush. Sure they have a really good OL but this is supposed to be an elite pass rush. I know Anderson is not 100% but I expected more from Hunter. He got to Richardson a couple times but man he needs to be a game wrecker and finish.
There were SEVERAL times and most obvious glaring times where on AR's long passes where their OL HELD D. Hunter and WAJr...hands are supposed to be inside the shoulder pads and theirs were WRAPPED OUTSIDE and blatantly bear hugging Hunter on a few of those RIGHT IN FRONT of the official and not once was their OL flagged for holding...it was a pathetic job by the official crew today and really hope we dont ever have them call another game for us.
Non calls on the home team, piss poor ball placement 1-2yards short of what was actually gained...it was an atrocious job.

I think Mixon just set the bar out of DP’s reach. No way Texans can go back, IMO.
thats not the bar Im worried about him reaching...its the difference between him and Akers and the bar that Akers has set in his time running for us...but it wont be visible until they have him active and show just how deadly the 1-2 punch of Mixon and Akers can be....if you wanna bring him in once Mixon and Akers have worn out and tired out the defense and bringing in a banger and just beat them to submission...Id be perfectly fine with that.

Pierce came in and had a decent carry, but that run was late in the game and the OL had the their DL on the ropes.

Yeah… you and every other person in my life points out the CHEFS, SHCOOL, SOTP, etc to me and every other pavement guy yall see. I was trying to contribute something useful. I’ve been doing this for close to 20 years. We work -very- hard at what we do but I gotta be honest… being the butt of a joke gets old. Oh well.

:(
bro I wouldnt take it as a jab...pretty sure it was just a joke from the Snickers commercial. Im sure what yall do is very maticulous and detail oriented and obviously do a great job or you wouldnt be trusted with contracts with the size and importance of professional league being nationally televised and community safety standards.

it was a double move on a play where a blitz was called (If we are talking about same play) so Im sure he expected the throw to have to come out fast and sooner rather than later...but yeah Lassiter needs to stay focused on WR and will learn.

I completely agree. I just don’t know what RB2 means to DeMeco. I was just thinking that Mixon made the run game look easy and I had the same thoughts regarding Akers who ran with the same style in preseason. If Mixon is out for a game I’d hate to see us go back to the Stone Age running game.

I know that. It was just a joke from the Snickers commercial which had nothing to do with your line of work from your description. And I really got your logo comment. To me it looked almost plastic.

That was just the math on the PAT matrix. A PAT would have only put them up six, whereas a 2PT conversion would have made it 7. Assuming Indy scored again before the half and it would have been worst case a tie going into the locker room.

I get the going for 2...but man do I hate leaving points on the field...especially when they are the difference in winning comfortably and convincingly vs. a nail biter that could bite you in the arse at the end.

Ross will have the punt situation corrected
Has this been addressed? What went wrong on this play? Of the 4 big plays by the Colts, this was the most egregious error by the Texans.
Giving up the big plays, including the blocked punt, has got to be cleaned up going forward.
During last year's Week 18 win at Indy, Troy Aikman made the point that giving up big plays was the weakest of the Texans defense. That still remains as the Texans biggest weakness. If this can be addressed over the course of the season, there's no reason this Texans team can't claim a Super Bowl championship. If not, that's likely why there will not be a parade in Houston next February.

I have been very critical of Richardson. And I still don't think he will become a winning QB. But his threat to pickup chunks plays when escaping the pass rush is real. Can't just go balls out on the pass rush or Richardson can slip a tackle and go 20+. The guy next week is somewhat similar. Blitzing and stunting is risky business. You have to stay in the lanes with these guys, and that's going to give them time to throw. Which I'm OK with if the freaking secondary doesn't let guys get behind them.
Colts fan here too early to say what Richardson will become, but the deep ball has been his strength since college. He still has alot to learn. As for caleb williams he looked even worse than Richardson. I believe you should be able to handle the bears quite easily as long as Stroud continues to protect the football like he does.

I thought the Safeties failed our CBs all game. They're supposed to be working together back there & it looked like the safeties were on a different page. That first big play for the TD, looked like Stingley was covering outside & underneath, the receiver ran a post... But he was already past Ward who was caught flat footed looking in the backfield.

Lassiter's foot speed is known to our DC & DB coach. They know teams will try to exploit that. They've got to come up with a plan for that.

& he's a rookie. What were your expectations?

I'm glad you mentioned this! If a QB is diving (head first) towards the first down marker and reaches it, you don't mark him down when he starts. That's only if he slides feet first! We got it on the fourth down, but we didn't need to make it stressful. That was one of many bullshit spots. Heck look at the final Nico Collins catch, he was CLEARLY past the first down marker but ref stopped a foot shy of it. It was corrected in review, but it's still ridiculous.

I think blocking for Mixon the OL was able to "learn" the system the way it's supposed to be ran, instead of blocking for a guy who doesn't know what he's doing. As much as they get better blocking & reaching it'll be that much easier for Pierce to pick it up.

It was a small sample size but it looked like Pierce may have got some of his power back. I'm as skeptical as the next guy about what DeMeco saw in practice... but I think I caught a glimpse.

On this specific play, Lassiter was caught getting sucked in on a double move. Stingley was also caught doing the same on the other side. 4.0 flat speed wouldn't have helped on these plays. I know these corners want to make big plays. But they have to let the ball get in the air, first. Otherwise, the big play will be for the opponents. Both are fortunate those plays didn't hurt.

What's more important for the defense? Coming up with big plays? Are reducing big plays from your opponent? I say the latter. Let's move those DBS back and let the opposing QBs beat themselves.

Spot on here, the safeties were atrocious in pass coverage. They kept blowing their assignments.
Man the Colts got some burners out there. Next game the safeties has to respect their speed and play a little deeper.

The defensive front didn’t get the pressure I was expecting. Hunter was pretty much a no show. He was doubled a lot and held quite of few times. That bull rush seem like his only move.

I actually noticed on one (at least) of Pierce's running plays the line was actually blocking gap (you can tell cause the OL is head up on the DTs), and Pierce was able to hammer the hole without the typical zone read.

I've got to slow it down to tell if they were playing gap or inside zone. I would think (I don't know) inside zone works a lot like gap for a RB.

I might very well be mistaken but my recollection of the responses of Stingly & Lassiter on these two plays varied significantly:
Stingly seemed to behave as if he expected safety help over the top as he initially turned and took off in pursuit after the receiver while the rookie CB seemed to stand in place with his thumb up his azz.

They will get better with more time playing together. The long pass in the 4th qtr was just a great play.

Hunter has a spin move in addition to a bull rush. Go back and look at some of his Vikings highlights.

Finally was able to just watch the game.

Love me some Joe! Mixon was born for this offense. (Didn’t read the game day thread but did anyone notice Mixon’s first run was up the middle for a yard? lol)

CJ was up and down all game. Was hoping he was going to pick them apart more.

Too much pressure on CJ, line needs to step it up!

F@ck Indy and their sh!tty ass field.

Junior looked way off. No burst, slow, no energy, conditioning way down.

Nico looked great!

Diggs is a nice weapon.

Hate to say it but Anthony Richards looks like a player.

We played better than these guys all game and controlled the game the entire time, need to stop these big pass plays, going to burn us.

Now I’m going to go practice my Joe Mixon touchdown dance!

Hunter held their attention and was a handful for them but they were able to key on him because Junior should have been at home watching.

I didn’t take it as a jab. I’m just basically saying ima couch football watching average Joe who saw an GOLDEN opportunity to jump in with some real PRO input on a group full of football geniuses. I still looked stupid. LOLOLOL. hey it sucks but I’m fine. I can take my lumps just like y’all can. I wanted my moment in the sun. I’ll keep trying though!

Lol.

I think the idea for the Colts game was to stop Jonathan Taylor first. I Don't think they were worried about Richardson completing too many passes. It worked out as you won, but if the db's had played back perhaps Taylor has a bigger game
