TEXANS VS BUCCANEERS INJURY REPORT

CloakNNNdagger

The play that I pointed out when he fell on his poorly protected thumb in the week 1 game is what is referred to in the article as a "fluke" accident. And again as I feared, he was brought back way too soon, even if he had received the best of thumb protection.
Duane Brown Admits to Setback With Thumb Injury
Unknown.jpeg

Patrick Starr
9:12 AM
Duane Brown admitted he rushed back too soon from it only to set him back further with his recovery.

“Yeah, first game set me back a little bit,” explained Brown regarding the injury. “That was a game I was really excited to play in and perform, and going against that defense and against those edge rushers, I really wanted to be out there. It set me back a little bit, but it’s not anything that I think will linger too much longer, but like I said, I ‘ve got to be smart about it.”

Injured blocking and what he called a “fluke” accident, Brown's rushing back has left a cornerstone of the offensive line absent from a team that desperately needs his presence there.

His status will remain day-to-day, according to his head coach Bill O’Brien, but Brown is in no rush to give an answer about his status and when he could potentially return.

“No percentage yet, man,” said Brown on the chance he might play on Sunday. “I might know something later on in the week, but right now, I don’t know.”

With Brown’s absence, expect Chris Clark to get his second consecutive start at left tackle.
Some early info I've been able to retrieve:

Seferian-Jenkins (TE) suffered a strained shoulder in the Saints game and is expected to miss four-to-six weeks. Gerald McCoy (DT) is dealing with a shoulder injury suffered when he sacked Brees. He left the game with the trainer holding up his arm, after which on Monday Lovie Smith essentially said that "he will be fine, don't worry, he should be good to go." Now it is believed that it could keep him out of Sunday's game against the Texans. Also the Bucs RB pulled a Dayne move on his C Evan Smith when he was tackled into his right ankle. He missed a good portion of the end of the game. His status at this early point is somewhat up in the air.

Note that all of the above are Bucs starters.

I haven't heard that here at all yet. The local radio heads were blasting McCoy for not playing after he walked off the field since it was reported that it was nothing serious. From what I am hearing McCoy is fine. ASJ is out however and he has been the primary target of Winston so far. That said Winston played well after he left the game on Sunday. Not sure what's up with Mike Evans, however vs the Saints they were mainly using him as a decoy. His hammy could still be an issue. I haven't heard anything about Evans yet, however he does miss a lot of time so if he's out Sunday it wouldn't surprise me.

In an interview, Evans said that Smith had put him on a "pitch count" for his hammy.

Hopefully, he'll play well again after he leaves the game Sunday.:)

LOL, I meant after ASJ left the game. They still have Winston on a leash though. They got way conservative in the 4th QTR vs the Saints. Instead of giving Winston the opportunity to put the game away Lovie chose to run the ball up the middle several times. When Winston was making throws he looked pretty good, despite 2 easy end zone misses that cost them 2 TDs where they had to settle for FGs.

Sunday will be interesting, as most know here I follow both of these teams (Bucs season ticket holder and also a Texans fan). I was at the Titans game and that game shocked me. The Bucs just weren't prepared for that Oregon Duck offense. What I couldn't get over is how the Titans were able to keep running the same slant plays over and over again with the same success. I knew however once a team got film on that offense that Mariota would be shut down. The Browns proved me right.

The Titans game just got out of hand too quick with the defense being clueless to stop the Ducks offense and Winston throwing a pick 6 on his very first play, it was 21-0 before some of the fans had even entered the building.

I don't think the Bucs are as bad as they looked vs the Titans, however I don't think they are as good as some are making them out to be after beating the Saints on the road. The Saints looked really bad on Sunday. Plus Brees was injured for a good part of the game and couldn't hit anything.

I watched the Texans/KC game on my iPad outside of Raymond James while tailgating (Bucs game was late). I also watched both the Texans and Bucs games last week in my "man cave", so I have seen every game of both teams. So with that said I am expecting the Texans to pull it out, a.) because they really have to b.) because the Bucs will probably be the Bucs. I think they got a little too high after beating the Saints. They should have beaten the Saints more soundly but kept trying to give the game back to them.

If the Texans can get any semblance of QB play they should win. The Bucs defense is prone to give up big plays. The Bucs offensive line has 2 starting rookies, Evan Smith could be out, etc. I expect JJ Watt and company to frustrate Winston and make him look like a rookie. The key for the Texans will be to contain Doug Martin. If the Bucs can't get him going they will be in trouble.

I say this is going to be a low scoring game.

Jonathan Grimes didn't practice today. Neither did Brown.

The TE situation has gone from 3 to 2 to now 1 1/12.............Fiedorowicz showed up to practice with a brace on his left knee.

HOUSTON TEXANS

Wednesday (9/23/15) [Usually Wednesday is the contact practice day.....TODAY WAS A NON-CONTACT PRACTICE......team may be too banged up......but they certainly need the experience (tackling and otherwise)........maybe tomorrow (but that leaves less time for recovery for a Sunday game)]

DID NOT PARTICIPATE
S Lonnie Ballentine Knee (postop arthrocopic surgery...will definitely not play)
T Duane Brown Hand (re-injured fractured thumb.....should be handled with that much more conservative approach to protective "wear" and time of return to play)
RB Jonathan Grimes Knee (new injury........labelled the notorious "minor" injury......may be why the Texans signed their new RB to the PS)
WR DeAndre Hopkins Concussion (most players do not clear protocol by the time of next game; But even more importantly, the protocol is usually lengthened in accordance to the number of previously documented concussions....this is his 3rd)

ILB Mike Mohamed Calf (a high risk recurrent injury. Just over 2 weeks till next game would not seem to be prudent, especially for an ILB that has to push off against great resistance in the run game)

LIMITED PARTICIPATION

TE C.J. Fiedorowicz Knee (another one of those "minor" injuries.....had arthroscopic knee surgery in January........only now shows up wearing a new knee brace with "Limited" participation in a non-contact practice)
RB Arian Foster Groin ("Limited" despite today for some reason being a non-contact practice....in fact, Foster has not yet had a "Full" practice, contact or not)
G Xavier Su'a-Filo Calf (still dealing with his secondary compensatory injury)

FULL PARTICIPATION
T Chris Clark Knee/Elbow (fell awkwardly)
T Derek Newton Elbow (holding back the rusher from the outside)

TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS

Wednesday (9/23/15)

DID NOT PARTICIPATE

TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins Shoulder (suffered last game, will definitely be OUT for at least 1 month if not more)
C Evan Smith Ankle (suffered last game)
S Major Wright Abdomen (missed last game with a "hip" injury it's now turned into an "abdominal" injury......wouldn't surprise me for him to be ultimately diagnosed as a "sports hernia.")

LIMITED PARTICIPATION
DE T.J. Fatinikun Shoulder (missed last game)
CB Mike Jenkins Hamstring (won't be on a pitch count, but performance may still be compromised)
DT Gerald McCoy Shoulder (While sacking Brees, injured and left game with arm being held by trainer. Hookems reports he hasn't heard anything to the effect that he won't play this week, and that the fans were upset with him for not re-entering the game adter the injury..........gives me a minor feeling of Clowney deja vu. We'll see. At any rate, any injury to a DT's shoulder is not particularly good.)
S D.J. Swearinger Shoulder (will turn to a cold shoulder if plays at NRG))

FULL PARTICIPATION
WR Mike Evans Hamstring (told he won't be on a pitch count this week.....was ineffective last week)

Hopkins had a concussion in college and one during preseason of his rookie year. As CnD has often said, the odds of recurrence increases with each one.

From August 2013:

As I previously posted before. This is not Hopkins' first concussion. Most are not aware that he sustained a concussion during an auto accident the end of 2011, just before the Orange Bowl. The handful of media that did report it, reported it as a "mild" concussion. They should have done a better job of investigating the incident. Despite the fact that he was allowed to play in the Bowl game within a week of the injury and did well, he did NOT sustain a "minor" concussion...........he sustained full loss of consciousness. Here is the eye witness account by his own receivers coach, Jeff Scott.

The sad thing is that the NCAA to this day, despite all the NFL emphasis and rules and protocols established for concussed players, does not have nor follow a truly standardized protocol for return to play. And if they had had one, there would have been no way the a player that had been totally knocked unconscious would have been allowed to play that early.............whether the concussion was sustained on the field or otherwise.

No matter how one wants to look at it, this is Hopkins' SECOND significant concussion, and he thus carries a 2-4 times chance of sustaining a third.

I would share your feelings. His first concussion being a knock out. Now this one being caused by a relatively mild trauma. The extra reps he gets against 3rd and 4th stringers......most of which will be watching games this season from their couches........he will be just as challenged as if he were running routes in practice without his team mates trying to lay him out. With a history of past concussions, protocols should be adjusted to lengthen the time from phase 4 to 5 to ultimate return to game play. Missing this game to let his brain regain its normal metabolic processes decreases the chance that he sustains another [3rd] concussion following lesser trauma......a concussion which will surely take him out of competition for quite a while.....and make him 3-9 times more likely to sustain a fourth. He may be fortunate if put out there, and he makes it through the game without incident. But if they stick him out there this Thursday, I would truthfully have to wonder who else got hit in the head to make that decision.:kubepalm:

And as I noted in my post of the full INJURY REPORT above, the concussion protocol, if followed the way it should be, will be extended, since this is his 3rd documented concussion.

There are players who have retired early on the advice of their doctors due to their frequency of concussions. Ryan Swope from A&M comes to mind. Is there a study or consensus among experts on the frequency or number of concussions sustained before a player is advised to retire?

Many top rated college players in the past decided to cease their football careers before getting into the NFL Unfortunately, there has never been a study that could even be put together that could definitively guide a player as to when to retire. Having operated on many trauma patient, a percentage of which suffered concussions, I have come to use a principle that all trauma surgeons are familiar with.

As opposed to the old saying "if you've seen one, you've seen them all," when a concussion is involved, its "If you've seen one concussion, you've seen one concussion." They are all different in degree, symptomatology, length of symptoms, and specifically effects on retention of cognitive skills. I've seen retirements from contact activities after 1 severe concussion, and retirement after ~10 tickytack concussions. Both types could go on to lifelong degenerating problems. Keep in mind, these would be documented concussions. Most players in contact sports would have probably sustained a myriad of undiagnosed mini-concussions through contacts that were considered incidental, such as in the case of linemen just hitting each other. And for those in contact sports since HS or even elementary school, these long-time exposures to such repeated head trauma could in themselves account for the aggressive, pathologic and down right crazy behavior we see in college and, for sure, NFL players.

Great post.

No Foster and no Hopkins. This game is going to be a ******* disaster.

Probably will still have that shuffled Oline.

I mean....defense is going to have to score for us this week. That simple. Maybe if our dline would play up to it's potential for a week they could force some TOs on a rookie QB.

This came up in another thread as an aside set of comments on the Grimes injury.......I feel that it is appropriate to repost it here under the INJURY REPORT.

As an aside, I believe that Grimes was already injured going into the last game or was injured on his first carry. He only carried once in the 1st Q, then only once again in the 2nd Q, and none in the entire 2nd half, despite the fact that the other RBs were totally ineffective (except for one 13 yd run by Polk). In fact, in his 2 carries, he averaged a higher yds per carry than Polk in his 14 carries. And while Polk carried 7 times in the second half without any impact, in my mind, injury to Grimes makes the most sense for him totally disappearing in the 2nd half. I would from this conclude that the chances are good that we will not see Grimes in the upcoming game, or else he will still be compromised with little expectations of significant effectiveness in the run game.

OBrien "He (Hopkins) came in Monday with symptoms of a concussion, so we put him in the protocol. He's going thru the protocol."

OBrien on Hopkins concussion "He's been out there (at practice). That's a good sign, but he's going through the protocol."

Greg Bailey @GregBailey13
#Texans Nate Washington: if Hopkins is hurt we'll go get him. Like a hostage rescue team.

At least the team is looking for the signs of a concussion and putting those players with symptoms through the protocol.

Full participation: Chris Clark (knee, elbow), Derek Newton (elbow).

C.J. Fiedorowicz (knee), Arian Foster (groin), Xavier Su'a-Filo (calf) were limited

DNP: Lonnie Ballentine (knee surgery), Duane Brown (broken thumb), Jonathan Grimes (knee), DeAndre Hopkins (concussion), Mike Mohamed (calf)

I can imagine what "Limited" means when Fiedo, Arian and now finally Filo are on that list.

I know you know that a lot of those passes are considered long handoffs... just need to execute them.

Pats have 91 passes/39 rushes(~70%) and that's playing with the lead.

Aaron Wilson ‏@AaronWilson_NFL
Texans running back Jonathan Grimes said his knee is feeling much better is relieved it wasn't more serious

A lot of quick passes and screens yes. The issue is the Pats are artists at running those plays and Brady is Picasso. The Texans are one of those Wine & Paint parties at your local TGI Friday's. We can't get away with it. We have to run the ball.

Hopkins says he'll be ready for Sunday. BOB says too early to tell.

Grimes says he intends to contribute Sunday.

It beginning to look to me that in this team's desperation, players (not only the above) that shouldn't be out there somehow end up out there.

I think this is less a result of the team's desperation than the product of the typical NFL players mindset. Think about all the stories you've heard of players attempting to hide a concussion because they know they'd be taken out of the game. I don't think Hopkins or Grimes are any different than the vast majority of NFL players in that regard.

Texans receiver DeAndre Hopkins and running back Jonathan Grimes returned to practice Friday after missing Wednesday's and Thursday's practices. Hopkins was in the concussion program and Grimes had a knee injury.

Keep in mind this really means nothing, in that this is a "walk-through" practice day.
