Texans Training Camp Preview 2023

Jets are probably panicking too

lol

It wasn’t a sharp day for Rodgers even beyond the interception. He completed 7 of 15 passes, but one was a perfectly placed cross-his-body throw on the sideline to speedster Mecole Hardman, who caught the ball in stride and never stopped running. Allen Lazard didn’t help his close friend with a couple balls off his fingertips but he ended practice with a touchdown catch over the middle.

Stroud...meh, he's a rookie, he's gonna do rookie stuff

Mills...meh, because, well, he's Mills

Case...WTF? Haven't heard a thing of him.

Ultimately it comes down to the OC putting them in positions where they can have success. Baby steps. Keep it simple and expand the playbook as the offense develops and matures. First preseason game is in 9 days. Then we're going to see if the offense is serviceable so that the defense isn't on the field 3/4 of the game.

It's a glimpse yes, but reading too much into a preseason game is fool's gold - either good or bad. It will be nice though to see DeMeco roaming the sidelines. That alone is reason enough for me to watch.

  • The above-mentioned play of Mills to Collins never should have happened. Like Monday’s big play from Mills to rookie wideout Xavier Hutchinson, there was a defender who would have made the play. Monday it was Will Anderson. Tuesday it was Jalen Pitre. He was flying off the edge and would have smashed Mills in a live rep. Pitre is everywhere for this defense. He’s been one of the best players on the field.
  • C.J. Stroud did a few nice things despite having a rollercoaster day. Stroud’s wideouts didn’t help him out on a couple of nice plays. Steven Sims dropped a pass near the sidelines twice. Noah Brown jumped for no reason on a Stroud pass and dropped the ball. Nico Collins fell down costing the offense an easy gain. The passes were there, but Stroud’s catchers didn’t make some of those plays. Another huge play by Stroud was wiped out by a holding penalty that wasn’t even near the play. Stroud’s unit did make it deeper in the situational two-minute drill.
  • C.J. Stroud threw his third interception of camp on Tuesday. Stroud whipped his head around and saw a receiver that looked open but Steven Nelson read it like a book and was there. Offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik said a lot of times Stroud can identify exactly what went wrong right away. This echoes something DeMeco Ryans said on Monday about how players handle mistakes. It wasn’t the great bounce-back day I had hoped for Stroud, but a day off tomorrow then Thursday presents another opportunity.
  • The wide receivers had a sloppy day. Robert Woods had a veteran off day and nobody really stood out. Nico Collins slipped on what would have been an easy first down. There were drops all over the place. The secondary is sticky and played well, sure, but there has to be more consistency from the wide receivers.
  • Christian Harris diagnosed a broken play on offense and best C.J. Stroud to his spot for no gain. It looked like maybe Jalen Pitre had first made the play, but if he hadn’t Harris certainly would have. The linebackers had a nice day diagnosing the offense and getting in position.
  • The linebacking room will have some tough cuts. I wouldn’t have said that weeks ago. Jake Hansen, who surprised everyone when he made the team’s initial 53-man roster last year, had some nice plays Tuesday. Henry To’oTo’o drew immense praise from defensive coordinator Matt Burke for his ability to adjust in practice to mistakes. Denzel Perryman flies around. It’s a deep group, something that in previous years wasn’t true.
  • Roy Lopez has been having a nice camp. I believe it was back-to-back plays where Lopez had a huge impact. The first was a tackle for a loss where he just barreled through the offensive line on a run play. The next he was stymied on a pass play but he tossed his left hand into the air getting a pass breakup. Lopez is trending toward clearly owning a roster spot.

  • Safety Jimmie Ward has been consistent and solid. Sure, Jalen Pitre gets a lot of love but the veteran has been making his presence felt. Ward darted into the backfield for a sack of C.J. Stroud during the end-of-half situational drill. It led to the offense using their lone timeout to stop the clock. The confidence I have in these starting safeties is at an all-time high.
  • Here is your daily “Will Anderson does things he shouldn’t be able to do” update. The rookie defensive lineman took his initial steps on a play and then quickly diagnosed the play as a screen. He sped off and then made the stop on the wide receiver. Yes, Will Anderson, lined up defensive end, made the tackle on a wide receiver screen. Defensive coordinator Matt Burke explained maximizing Will Anderson’s skillset with the way the team is set to use him is a priority.

Training camp is great because footballs back but I can never get too excited about anything or too down. Every good play for one of our guys is a bad play for another. Really want next Thursday to get here I wanna see the boys on the field

We are rightly confident that the D is going to be pretty solid being that Demeco is now the coach plus the additions of Will Anderson and a healthy Stingley in year 2.

We have a rookie OC trying to implement his offensive scheme with a rookie QB and many other 1st and second-year offensive players. I hope Slowik is up to the task.

Have no doubt, steelbtexan is cheering wildly for Stroud to be the biggest bust since Ryan Leaf.
That’s not true. Just because he doesn’t blindly gush over/praise CJ doesn’t mean he wants him to fail. I’ve been to training camp every damn day it’s gone on so far (it’s been hotter than hell) and CJ ain’t looking like no Tom Brady. In fact, I’d argue Mills has looked like the better QB every day, with the exception of the one day where he looked like how CJ is looking like this week. The crowd has been misleading as well. They seem to be pro CJ. They pretty much cheer anything he does, even the incompletions.

I’m rooting for CJ to start coming alive and pull away as the clear QB1 but he hasn’t done it. Mills is actually looking like he did in that nice little stretch we got in his rookie campaign, but he does have NFL experience. I’m sure things will look completely different once preseason begins though.

Edit:
That is not true at all.

But I digress.

Bro, you just got some personal sh*t going with him over hurt feelings. I’m not part of that and just telling it like it is. Not a fan of CJ and especially not Mills but rooting that either one of them can put it together and be our QB1 for 10+ years!

Now, #51 is a different story. He’s looking like an absolute beast since day 1 of TC! I can argue and debate with any of y’all when it comes to him!

The bad thing about gloating this early......is the taste of crow later.

I'm not saying he will fail, I actually think he will eventually become an avg to slightly above avg starter. However I dont like when posters say things like if Stroud doesn't succeed then it's Slowik's fault. Nope if Stroud doesn't succeed it will be Stroud's fault and nobody elses fault. Slowik helped develop Mr. Irrelevant in the 2022 draft into a fine QB. (Yes, Shanny/Kubiak also helped) There's no reason why Stroud shouldn't succeed. The only things that will hold him back are his ability to perform under pressure and what's between his ears.

Wrong, I really hope I'm wrong and Stroud brings many championships to Kirby. It would be the best possible outcome to be wrong. Have you noticed in the training camp thread I haven't commented on the good or bad plays by Stroud. I bet you haven't noticed this. I hope the young man succeeds. But I'm not drinking the kool-aid.

Good to see Anderson is looking like a difference maker. He's exactly what this defense needed, a play maker in the front 7. This will really help guys like Greenard/Hughes/Collins/Rankins. For the 1st time in a long time the DL has a lot of talented depth.

As far as Stroud goes, I dont like him as a person or a player and I can understand why a guy like TB who's drank the Stroud Koolaid feels the way he does about me, but it's not personal on my end. Like I've said many times before, I'm in prove it mode when it comes to the Texans org, from ownership to the janitors.

I will be the first to say that you have kept with your mantra of hope for the best but expect the worse.

The news out of camp on WAjr has been promising and exciting. Really hope he continues to impress well into his NFL career here in Houston.

But I've got one question for you....What did the janitors do?!?! LOL. On a serious note the Organization itself (as far as stadium, trainers, dieticians, building personnel) has been rated as top notch and one of the very best in the NFL by players and employees alike...so looks like we just gotta get the product on the field straightened out and back to pre bill o dumbdumb/jack pos easterby days and we should return to glory.

And whats with the Stroud hate on a personal level?? Do you know him personally?? Did he steal your wife and kick your dog?? I can understand not liking a player as a player...but as a person?!?!?! What bothers you about him as a person?? The fact that he's grounded in family and faith???

Last night before laying my head on my pillow, I kept having this thought about the Texans' defensive team speed. Yes, I'm sick and need a lot of help, but I can live with it if you can. Anyhow, that team speed is much more evident with this group. Now, a big part of that is play recognition and experience. But, there's also faster personnel on this roster in 2023. I bring that up because on the first play of the first team session, LB Christian Harris flew across the field and locked up RB Dameon Pierce in the backfield for a loss. What stood out was how fast Harris got across the field to get to the Texans star ball carrier. It even seemed as if Pierce was surprised when Harris made his way, rapidly, through the chaos to make the tackle.

On the second play, Harris, again, ran down the run play in the backfield. It's impressive to watch #48 move at a faster rate of speed than anyone else on the field as he's shooting into the backfield to make TFLs happen.

He wasn't the only former Alabama LB FLYING around making plays. Rookie LB Henry To'oTo'o split a gap on an inside run play during a team drill later in the day and tagged off on the running back three yards in the backfield. He saw a gap open and shot through into the backfield in a blink. In my estimation, To'o To'o's short area quickness far outweighs his speed, which is substantial in and of itself. But, his decision making and quick, explosive first step are really, truly impressive.

Making the social rounds this morning was a beautiful pitch and catch that occurred a few plays later in the team session. QB Davis Mills had a blitz arriving in his face just as he took the snap. He stepped up in the pocket and threw a downfield strike to WR Nico Collins for a 30-35 yard completion. DB Jalen Pitre was in the area when Mills threw the ball so he might've come up with the sack. Regardless, Mills laid one right in the bread basket, over the defender, into the hands of Nico for the big play.

If I've seen this happen once in training camp, I've seen it a dozen times - DL Hassan Ridgeway stuffing another run play. In pads, or not, Ridgeway has completely disrupted the run game throughout the first six practices. On this play, the offensive line tried to down block on him, but he just ran through the downblock all the way into the lap of the running back.

The pass catchers weren't completely on their game today for their quarterbacks. Too many drops occurred. QB C.J. Stroud threw two gems early in practice - one on the sideline, just a pretty ball, dropped. Then, he threw one on the other sideline right in between the WR's numbers and that was dropped too. Later in a team session, he checked down to a RB, dropped. I thought Stroud threw the ball better today, much more consistently, but his pass catchers didn't help him out a great deal.

Today, though, he threw just one bad ball and DB Steven Nelson baited him into a pick. Nelson was in zone coverage and had eyes on everything happening in front of him. When he saw Stroud looking at the deep over route to WR Tank Dell, Nelson waited for the right time and pounced when the ball was in the air to come up with a pick.

Rookie RB Xazavian Valladay may have had the best run in camp and it got the attention of everyone on the offense. He hit on an outside run as the DE was pinned inside. Valladay dodged him initially, staying true on his outside path. Because the DE was pinned all the way inside, Valladay finally had room to hit the gas pedal and blast upfield untouched for 20-25 yards. I'm telling you that young dude can scoot. He was MOVING up the field.

On the next play, Valladay ran a similar concept and I wrote down that it was the best two back-to-back runs we've seen. I'm a big fan of what Valladay can become with time and opportunity in this offense.

The next three plays were indicative of some of the offense's struggles on Monday. First play - WR fell out of his break on a well thrown out ball. Second play - DROP, right in the numbers. Third play - pass protectors didn't pick up a blitz forcing Stroud to scramble out of bounds.

A few plays later, Mills threw an absolutely beautiful ball to the sideline where WR Steven Sims held on and got his two feet in bounds for a big gain. Sims was unable to hang onto one on the near sideline earlier, so that was quick redemption, so to speak, for the first down catch. Great throw. Excellent receiver route, mechanics and body control to make the play.
The next play, though, LB Blake Cashman blew up a screen with simple recognition. He wasn't fooled and hugged up on the running back nearly immediately upon the QB making his drop. It's not even arguable at this point that Cashman has been one of the ten best players in this camp through six days. Perhaps even top five - he's been that good.

On the first play of the following drive, Mills threw a gem to WR Noah Brown for a long first down and the Texans offense moved the sticks. Two plays later, Mills hit Brown again for a first down on a bootleg.

Then, DL Roy Lopez said he'd had enough of that. He backdoored a run play and drilled the RB in the backfield for a four yard loss. On the very next play, he volleyball spiked Mills' throw over the middle ala J.J. Watt. That's not something I can remember him doing at all the past two years. Consequently, I don't remember seeing a pass get knocked down at all in drills.

Two plays later, RB Gerrid Doaks found a seam around the left side as the DE got caught inside on the run play. Doaks had a downhill lane and hit the gas. Big fella has some juice too. He blasted out for a 30-35 yard gain.

On the next play, Stroud set up a slip screen to Valladay about as well as it can be done. OL Jimmy Morrissey was out in front with a key block and Valladay directed his blockers down the field to spring him for even more yards. Now, there was a flag called for an ineligible man down the field, but the execution on that screen was as good as I've seen.

Keenum runs the bootleg game as well as any of the three QBs and he started off his drive with a strike to WR Johnny Johnson III for a first down. Sold it, booted out, 88 wide open, pitch and catch for a first down.

Valladay has definitely shown some sweet feet out on the field. I wrote this in my notebook
"27 great feet on the cutback! So SWEET, slide in, back, out and gone"

On the final drive of the day in a situation period to end practice, Stroud strung together his best play of the day. After his first throw was dropped, he found my new pal Andrew Beck for a first down. Beck was wearing LB Christian Harris like a cheap suit but big #47 held off the former 'Bama star LB and made the catch.

On the next play, Stroud dotted WR Nico Collins for another first down. Then, he threw a dime to Beck again down the seam. He was cruising along and finished with a strike to rookie WR Jared Wayne. But, the coaching staff ended the drill right there just as Stroud found a rhythm. Regardless, Stroud was in total command with just one inaccurate throw in that high pressure situation. He was just a bit inaccurate on a throw that was a tad high for WR Tank Dell. However, every other pass, minus one drop, was caught for a first down or a near first down.

Training camp is great because footballs back but I can never get too excited about anything or too down. Every good play for one of our guys is a bad play for another. Really want next Thursday to get here I wanna see the boys on the field

The thing is, we're likely not going to see the guys we want to see very much, if at all, in these games.
Really gotta look towards the scrimmages with the Dolphins and Saints for those guys to get their reps in.

Mess with bull you get the horns.

Why pancakes?
McClain was in the movie 'The Longest Yard' staring Adam Sandler. One day at the craft table, McClain got carried away and ate too many pancakes. Ended up throwing up pancakes in front of Sandler, who was like, oh my god did you just do that? who does that? and started calling him Pancakes on the set.

I despise pancakes mcclain and wish he would of just moved on to ten when they moved there...for years he's been a titans lover and have no idea why his fat arse stayed in Houston. Probably too lazy to walk around to even notice the media tent.
I dont think he’s too lazy to walk around, I just think it’s not physically possible for him to walk around, unless it’s to the chocolate waterfall at Golden Corral.

Stroud signed up with and hangs out with the same trash Derrick did. When it comes to the religious aspect Derrick was baptized in the River Jordan before preying on women. Guilt by association

Will Anderson is phenomenal but, in his case, he just has to beat the man in front of him. In the case of a QB, the QB needs his teammates to come through by blocking and getting open and he needs an offensive scheme that is workable. If guys don't block or get open or if bad offensive plays are being called then no QB in the world is going to be successful. It all has to mesh.

Probably been said before and IIRC, Tunsil said last year: that he has to get it right every time while defense only has to get it right one time and the QB out.

It sounds like the offense is a disaster. Interceptions. Dropped passes. False starts. Botched snaps. Poor blocking. It all starts at the top. I'll give Bobby Slowik all the credit in the world if he can produce an offense that can be in the top 24 in the league by the end of the season. He's got his work cut out for him.

I’m cutting my predicted win total from 7 to 6.

On the plus side, the D looks like it’s going to be legit and a bit above my early thinking. Top 10? Possibly, but at worst I expect the D to carry their weight.

No reason to expect the ST to be a lot worse, but it would be hard to match last year so I will say slightly less on the expectation scale but still good.

But the offense? QB play looks shaky. Not that unexpected but WR/TE room is bad. Flat out..bad. Is Dalton gets hurt, this TE group is instantly 32nd. The WR room is bottom 3 until proven otherwise. Too many guys and not enough dudes.

I think the O will start off poor and slowly climb as CJ gets comfy and more in sync. But by that point, the season will be slipping away. I see 5-7 wins, and will settle on 6.

Reads as you mean line? New RG, new center, Green back and new QB plus pressure on Mills to earn paycheck..

I expect a lot of adjustment. The only one that concerns me this early is Kenyon Green.

I get the impression that the OL has been disappointing. Can @Texans_Chick provide feedback?

As I said speculated earlier, is Slowik approaching this as if he inherited the Kansas City offense? I sure hope not. It seems that the offense needs to focus on the basics before Slowik implements a complex playbook. One doesn't have to be Bill Walsh to come up with some basic plays that those guys can run. Keep it simple and let CJ and the other young players adjust to the speed of the NFL. If the offense is a DISASTER come September, that's on Slowik. They don't have to be good, just decent, like top 24. That should be doable.

I'm sticking with 9-8. I have faith in the players. I hope to gain faith in the offensive coaches.
