The price looks like its a 6th and 7th round pick swap. Not a big deal to get a decent guard. I could feel very differently depending on what the new contract turns out to be (*IF* he is extended).
The back half of this draft is supposedly thin, so swapping late picks may not mean much.
Doing a pick swap where you lose a 6th and get a 7th for a solid player at a position of need is a FUBAR? I’ll have to see the extension we give him but that’s an interesting take with the info we have now

Yes and once he was cut he could sign ANYWHERE. Are you under some delusion that these players have to sign with the Texans if they are free agents? The Texans are giving up a 6th and getting back a 7th and you are acting like they gave up a 1st rounder.

Nah man. Texian is right. Didn't you see the free agent rules for this year? Any Free Agent offered a contract by the Texans must sign with the Texans. They can only sign with other teams if not offered a contract by the Texans. Additionally, before cutting a player any team must consult the Texans to determine if the Texans would like to aquire said player.

How many spots back is this after the pick swap? This looks like a no-brainer to me on paper. Someone that is a grizzled vet, but also still young enough to be part of the future at a position where at worst you needed depth? You get a solid vet that's at worst on par with Cann, and arguably a bit better. I'd want to see them side-by-side and also seeking opinions on this. I know Mason but it's not like I watch him weekly.
So what if they planned to release him? Even if it was a 6th outright, to guarantee you get a guy with his resume for a 6th would still be a good trade. That you get something back at all, even a 7th...slam dunk to me unless I'm missing something. This means we have 3 legit guards now. Light a bit of a fire under Green hopefully and provides some insurance. We can take G off the draft list at this point IMHO. Maybe pick up a UDFA to groom but that's about it at G. I wouldn't mind a T late as a developmental type either.
If I am Nick, I am working on extensions for Tunsil and Howard for my bookends. I also now have some depth at G, although no rock stars...should be decent in quality overall. I'm crossing fingers that Green turns into a 1st rd pick but if he doesn't we can play Mason and Cann and be a-ok there.
Only big need left on o-line is Center, which is my #1 want in FA. Hopefully, they are burning up the phone lines trying to land one. Ben Jones redux anyone?

Mason's salary is $2MM more than Cann's. Cutting Cann creates $2 million in dead cap. This would add $4MM to the salary cap. Mason's pff grade = 68.9 playing for a playoff team and behind Brady. Cann's pff grade is 66.6. Cann's grade is likely higher if playing for Tampa and Mason's grade likely lower playing for the Texans. Is it worth it?

Slightly less enthused if they dump Cann but understandable given cap considerations. Probably an upgrade to Cann, but it doesn't do anything then for depth. I guess they see him as a clear starter and didn't want to pay Cann as a depth piece. So, put G back in the mix - probably late in the draft or they can sign JAG in the FA market at cheap.

3 out of his 5 seasons, his season grade was 85, last year being a low point. Should be a significant upgrade over Cann.
This draft is weak at OG. The player I wanted was Voorhees in the third, then he had his ACL injury at the combine. He wouldn't play this year, but if available late, I'd take him, maybe in the 6th.

Tampa had over 200 more offensive snaps than Houston, Mason played 1200 snaps and Cann played 1005 snaps. Cann was equally as durable as Mason.

The O-line coaches preferred Mason to Cann, so they got him. Mason is a quicker lineman and that is important to this staff.
This is a price (not a huge one) for switching staffs and philosophies on an annual basis. Though it had to be done.

Based on your posts about the bears and panthers trade, the Texans traded a 6th for a 4th and a 7th since Shaq Mason was a 4th round pick.

The Texans should be pleased in picking up one of the more stable guards in terms of pass protection. Mason was above average last season ranking 24th among all guards and 12th among right guards with a 3.3 percent rate, via TruMedia (minimum 200 pass block snaps, the average rate is 4.3 percent). How are they coming up with that conclusion? Because Tom Brady was sacked less often than Davis Mills? Surely that doesn't say what they want it to say.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are trading right guard Shaq Mason to the Houston Texans, a source told ESPN on Tuesday.
It is a bit more than a wash: younger but not much; from 5 sacks to one if that continues would a primo trade. I'm concerned about his run blocking if we're leaning on that aspect with rookie QB. My first thought was no draft pick for an offensive guard, however releasing a j Cann puts a draft pick back on the board for me.
