Texans talking DE Grant Wistrom out of retirement?

Though Wistrom started every game in 2006, the thinking in the immediate wake of his release was that his body was too banged up to continue playing.

Might be a good veteran presence for T. Johnson, Mario, and Anthony Weaver. But I think he might be injury prone.

Question: Why do we always assume because a player is a veteran that he is a leader? Wistrom may or may not be, but for the Aaron Glenn we have had the Wongs/Moulds.

Anyway, I am leary of player whose body and/or desire has lead him to conclusion that he needs to retire. If the Texans were pushing for a Superbowl then OK, but just making a play for mediocrity, no.

I think the assumption is from the logic of what possible reasons could there be for signing a player like Wistrom. Obviously he's beat up and uncertain about his ability to play, so the only other reason would be potential veteran leadership, IMO.

How many people saw Walker or Sharper walking around the sideline talking to the younger players giving tips or even talking to them? Glenn absolutely did. You saw it virtually every game talking to Dunta when the D was off the field. Just because a guy has survived in the league doesn't make him a leader, role model or potential coach.

I think we have made smart, vet type moves this off-season and that this would be more of a reach. Veteran leadership is one thing but if the guy is too beat up to teach on the field than it isn't something I'm interested in. I think we are striking a good balance at this moment.

But all of your examples could still play at that time.

What if Randy Moss was a beat up WR who wasn't sure he could even put pads on, would someone still sign him? That would be a big "NO". Obviously his attitude would not be conducive if that's all he offered a team.

I only mention this because, beyond so-called 'veteran leadership' potential, what other reason(s) can you imagine are behind this move of signing Wistrom?

Replace veteran leader with veteran presence.

Guy played with motor and know how. I think that's the kind of thing that should stick out to certain guys on this team.

If he deceided his heart was still in playing football and felt he could go 100% and didn't cost too much. I wouldn't be opposed to the signing.
