I wasn’t too impressed with Campen this season.

Late season the pass blocking was ok considering the shuffling that had gone on due to injury.

Tunsil/Howard/Scharping I suppose the damage was already done but no major turnaround.

Still not offering a run game to rely on.

It was a meh from me when I saw he’d signed elsewhere.

Seriously, Caserio needs to do what it takes to keep Pep down on Kirby. Either pay the man or promote him. He's very good at his job. I would rather promote Pep to HC than some of the candidates.

I was indeed. It isn’t like I’m criticising Campen, but he wasn’t performing miracles either. It was all incredibly “meh”.

Agree. Too much indecision on where guys would play. Players cannot get comfortable let alone learn. This team is only going to get worse next season. My only hope is that Caserio will be able to draft well and pick up a couple free agents this offseason. Another high draft status in 2023 should put the players on the roster. Now if we only had a head coach and staff.

I liked that Caserio brought in vets like Cannon/Taylor/McCray to give Busty's like Howard/Scharping competition. Too bad they got hurt.

I'm beginning to want McCown to be hired just to see reactions from guys like you. Entertainment at it's finest.

It's possible that Nick wants to let the next HC choose his OC. Now that O'Connell is expected to go to Minnesota, maybe Caserio will try to finalize the new HC before Pep signs somewhere else in order to give the new HC a chance to decide if he wants to keep Pep or not.
 
Random thought on the current culture building at NRG. Here is an interesting read on culture, Belichick and a possible reason why his disciples fail.

"Why? The answer lies in the fact that culture is hard to duplicate when we inherit people whom we need to re-train, as opposed to train for the first time. Too often, leaders simply assume everyone is going to “buy in” to a new culture based on the leader’s past credentials.

When Belichick arrived in Cleveland for his first head coaching stint during the early 1990s, he stepped into slightly-hazardous terrain, one that was filled with quality people who didn’t quite understand his procedures or beliefs. Many of his players were talented, and Belichick believed he could re-train their behaviors around his own cultural philosophies.

But a few years in, that proved to be a mistake in judgment and the team struggled before ultimately letting him go. From that moment forward, Belichick adopted his train rather than re-train approach.

I'm not sure I'm buying that. Belichick inherited a loaded team in New England. The Patriots did not have a losing record the previous 4 years before Belichick arrived, making the playoffs 3 of those 4 years. He got these talented players to buy in to his coaching, and the results were spectacular. And sustainable.

I can't say exactly why the results haven't translated to other teams. But, Belichick has a way of teaching his players and coaches exactly what they need to know to perform their tasks, without burdening them with a bigger picture. Do your job. Hoody will take care of the rest. Everyone knows everything they need to know about their section of trees. Only Belichick can see the forest.

I completely believe this & I think this is what McDaniels was referring to a couple of days ago when he said he didn't understand people his first time in Denver.

Like Urban Meyer, they tend to think people see them as the man on the white horse & people by default want to follow them.

It took Kubiak a while just to get them thinking winning is possible on Kirby.

All that is gone now.

This is a good point. Those players Belichick inherited were the core of the Parcells era. They set the culture, policed the locker room and Belichick adapted his beliefs/methods to support, promote and sustain that culture. The foundation of the Patriots way is those players he inherited.

That has been my biggest issue with the Texans approach with culture coaches and GMs setting the culture. I don't believe it's something you brew in an office and distribute with banners, placards and slogans. It's something that is driven by coaches and players that permeates the organization. That is why I feel the McNairs' obsession with the Patriots and their culture is a fool's errand.

I think culture is a big part of every organization. I believe it should be a top down effort.

I think the McNair's have made themselves a55clowns by making their quest as public as they have.

But, they've made a lot more money than winning games doing it their way. I'm broke as he77, so probably shouldn't judge

I believe it was either yesterday or the day before, they were doing a tribute to Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. I don’t remember the exact words. But Bill Belichick addressed the negative vibe surrounding the organization. He placed some type of item in the middle of the locker room. And he told his team that thing was an distraction that needs to be removed. (Paraphrasing)

I guess they had some culture issues that was quickly nipped in the bud. From that point on history was made.

It's even more than that when you think about it.

That was a very unique situation.

Belichick had been Parcells' DC there, right? Those players he inherited that were holdovers from Parcells KNEW him and probably helped him along, giving him more credibility.
 
Today is my 71st birthday, but my mind works like that of a 91 year old. Hope someone hasn't already said this .... but I think I've figured it out ! I was listening to Stoerner and co-miserating with him on our lost opportunity, (missing our opportunity to nab Kevin O'Connell), to bring in the Rams offense. Stoerner won't come out and say it .... but he knows why O'Connell walked. It was because of the "Culture" ! I kept asking myself, what is this damn "Culture" they keep trotting out there ? Here it is .... Caserio says .... no matter what, all decisions, and the direction they lead us, always .... without exception, come from Jack or myself. That is our Culture, and everyone adheres to it ! That means regardless of how blatant the error or how powerful or embarrassing the blowback, you just smile and carry on !!

Well, when you reach my age, I guess it's expected to misremember things...

I thought there was some overlap there which was why Kraft was sold on him.

I remember the brouhaha when Parcells stepped down with the Jets and named Belichick as his successor but BB pulled out of that and went to the Pats instead. In my head, I attributed that to Belichick having spent time in New England with Parcells.

My entire life is a lie.

No, you're right. There was no such thing as the Cleveland Browns in 1996. They moved to Baltimore without Belichick. Belichick coached DBs (Law & Milloy) for the Pats the year they lost to the Packers in the Super Bowl.

I'm taking this discussion out of the Player Transaction Thread, where it doesn't belong.

Keke had commendable college stats, especially in 2018 (just before he was drafted). And certainly not too shabby stats last year with the Packers. In 2020, Keke was concussed and didn’t play in the Packers’ final 3 games that season. Then, against the Arizona Cardinals on Oct. 28, he had a 2nd concussion that held him out for a pair of games. He has also been out of the lineup for the last several weeks due to COVID and dubious concussion symptoms. The Packers essentially stated that there were "personal reasons for his release. His potential for increased incentive and performance should enhanced in another atmosphere and with proper coaching.

Hard to perfect your craft with so few opportunities. I think they could be pretty effective given enough chances.

Players don't seem to improve much once they join the team. I swear they leave here worse than when they signed on.

Several ex Texan players doing ok on other teams. I idonno: the answer or what the solution is.

I read lots of opinions on here though. I just get more confused.

Lets talk defensive coordinator now that Lovie is on board as HC.

Rod Marinelli the top option. One of the best defensive line coaches you can get. Lovie’s former DC 2010-12 in Chicago. Tampa 2 disciple also from the Monte Kiffin coaching tree. Last on the Raiders coaching staff 2020-21.

Dark horse option:

John Butler. Former Texans DB coach 2014-17. Has been with Bills as DB coach since. And aside from the last two minutes of their season against the Chiefs they had the best pass defense in the league. Mcdermott and Leslie Frazier (another former Lovie DC) run a zone heavy defense like Lovie so they should be “aligned” with coaching philosophy.

My early pick for OL coach:

Ed Warriner longtime college OL coach that has developed a ton of stellar OLs in his career. Him and Pep coached on the same staff at Michigan in 2018. He has a history of making every OL he coached better. Bring him to Houston to work on this group!

On the whole, Texans' fan base is one of the more forgiving fan bases out there despite what a few people on this board that say otherwise. The Texans brass can't get out of their own way when making high level decisions, they usually make those decisions look much more difficult than they are and wind up settling on someone on the bottom of most franchises list (if on the list at all) yet we give them credit for not making the worst choice out of bad options they created because at the top they couldn't agree on any of the top candidates.

The funny part is, the people forgiving their every move will join the throngs of fans that want change when things don't work out. Then we'll go through the process all over again.
 
After listening to successive interviews with Lovie, Pep, and Frank, I feel like Dorothy at the end of "The Wizard of Oz" - loosely - "you search everywhere .... you can't find it anywhere .... you give up, come back home, and find -you never really lost it at all .... it was here all along, right here in our own back yard " !! Yes !!
 
New TE coach Tim Berbenich. Last RB coach with Raiders. Worked on Pep’s staff with Colts and has spent a lot of time on Jon Gruden’s staffs with Bucs and Raiders.

Ben Mcdaniels also being considered for promotion to WR coach per Aaron Wilson.
