Texans random thought of the day

Makes no sense at all.

First you say they never get the top FA. And then you say, after pointed out they actually do, when they do it’s only because they need to. That’s part of the point of FA.

When do you expect them to go after a top free agent and break the bank?

New England built their team around a GOAT QB they lucked into.

The Eagles traded up to get a franchise QB. Before that they were a Chip Kelly experiment gone horribly wrong.

Minnesota just let all three QBs they had this past season and hope to repeat success with a top QB free agent. They were a Cinderella team this year and won against the odds with a third string QB who they let go. They just got done wasting a HOF career RB with their own QB turnstile.

And Jags are no measure of success. A high powered defense with a go nowhere QB. (Been there done that.) Another one hit wonder. They just barely got back to the playoffs after how long?

All four had a large amount of luck this past year with the exception of NE because of Brady. And we have tried/trying those strategies at one point or another.

I said they've really only spent top FA $$$$ on 4 players in 15 yrs, including Wade when they were a startup.

As for the rest of the post your mind isn't going to be changed even after the Vikings gave 27 mil per yr GUARANTEED to Cousins in addition to what they did in FA.

The Eagles added Jeffery/Smith in FA and I'm pretty sure they also added top tier FA's to their defense.

I already said what the Pats did (Gilmore)

Tell me again what did the Texans do in FA over the last 15 yrs compared to these teams even when they had their QB, (Schaub/Now Watson?)

The Jags are no success in Coughlin's 1st yr? AFCCG and had the Pats on the ropes.

Tell me when has the Texans org reached this point in franchise history?

Man why do you even follow them if you don't think they are doing their best to improve the team. I just don't get. Complainning all the freaking time will only bring about stress.

They got your boy Gaines in there and you're still complaining.

Again chill out and let's see how things pan out.

The craziest thing is that now the team is under new management that he endorses. Signed a lot of FAs. And he still can’t let go of his fetish of McNair and his money.

Press the reset button and move on

No fetish here and I like how you avoided the last post. I just want the most talented players on this team. Whether in FA/Draft, whether the smoke dope or not.

I notice how you didn't answer the post above yours.

Instead you just chose to post the same old sh!t like this post that you always post when you cant answer the post above. We all think differently and have different reasons for being fans of the team. How's that for answering your question.

BTW, I've already said if Watson stays healthy and the OL plays avg to above avg the Texans will win 10-11 games with this schedule, despite ownerships constraints.

You didn't ask me that question. But since you asked they brought in Wilfork, Reed, Manning, Jojo, Steve McKinney Vonte Leach, Kevin Walker, Trash Brock, Weaver, Moore, Miller, Badger, Kelemete, Allen, Henderson, Bergstrom, Antiono Smith, Wade Smith, Shane Lechler, and several others.

So please stop acting as if they haven't went after FA or signed any.

Again all because they didn't grab who you wanted doesn't mean they wasn't active.

I think Steel just needs to complain about something. Hahaha it's like he's suffering from that battered fan syndrome.

Thanks for listing a bunch of 2nd tier guys, quite a few signed when they were a brand new franchise. Let's talk about the last 5 yrs. Give me that list.

I wasn’t trying to avoid your post. I was trying to get the room to stop spinning after all that spin you gave me.

We can argue the other 4 NFL teams and nit pick on this and that but what it boils down to is opinion. Hindsight 20/20. In FA you have winners and losers. And even when you get the big name sometimes it doesn’t turn out right. Even NE has had one or two of those. It’s exhausting to argue that.

But what I will say is you are wrong on the Texans and FA. They do spend money. They do get big names. So McNair does empty his pockets to win. That is where you are wrong.

Could they have done more? I will concede that fact and agree with Andre Johnson that they should have done more. Could they have gotten better talent? Sure.

It’s the phrasing of your statement is wrong. McNair will spend money. It’s the guy who is telling McNair where to spend that money and on whom. We should agree on that. And we can agree the last 15 years Rick Smith hasn’t done enough.

The last 15 years it’s been Rick Smith. He is out. Gaine is in. Everything that has happened in the last 15 years doesn’t matter any more.

New management. New direction. New philosophy. Nee priorities. New way of measuring talent. New way of doing business.

Let’s be thankful and hope this new management does things right. Whether it’s your way or someone else’s I could give two shits as long as there is a Super Bowl trophy for the Texans in the next two years.

“Doesn’t matter Brian got a new GM”

AFC South Champions 2 of last 3 years Brian!

Other than Os and Joseph no.

I'm just asking you to look at how winning teams are built and compare that to how the Texans are built

A bunch of backups to protect your franchise qb # never learn .

They offered Solders top money. The offer was more than what he got from the Giants.

He wanted to be closer to the medical staff that's dealing with his kid.

All because you make big offers doesn't mean X player would sign the contract.

And if they did offer up a 90% of their money, people will still complain about how much they offered. Or they didn't do enough to bring in more FA's.

Just shows some fans will never be happy.

And only the top FA improves a team.

When you have the money would you rather have a top Fa or a second tier fa?

I will tell you what the Pats did last off-season. They let Logan Ryan walk and signed top tier FA Gilmore

And the wheels on the bus good round and round.

I think that dynasty is done, IMHO. They traded Jimmy G. That will come back to be the worst decision GM Belichick ever made.

If this was last offseason I'd be right there with you complaining about the Texans org being timid and passive during FA period. As much as I would have loved the Texans to have landed some big FA offensive linemen this offseason there just weren't any. And the draft hamstrung Gaine and company from making any moves. It is what it is.

When you have the money would you rather have a top Fa or a second tier fa?.

In most instances I would avoid the top guy and go for 2 2nd-3rd guys. It's a team sport, not a star sport.

I think that dynasty is done, IMHO. They traded Jimmy G. That will come back to be the worst decision GM Belichick ever made.

Rumor is Belichick was forced to make that trade over his kicking and screaming objection.

Rank speculation, I think that makes it more likely Belichick retires when Brady does.

Having the best players is usually the way to build the best team.

I can now see where we disagree . Get all the 2nd Tier players you can get and see where that leads you.

I can now see where we disagree . Get all the 2nd Tier players you can get and see where that leads you.

For note, I haven’t read the entire discussion and I am simply starting at this point.

I think the Texans issue over the past 4-6 years has been depth/in house development. When our stars, or even contributing players get hurt, the next man up was multiple steps down in talent level. Blame Ricky. Blame Gary. Blame Wade. Blame BOb. Blame RAC. Blame Vrabel. To me, each is as guilty as the next.

I am from the school of thought that your second string should be so close to your first after 1-2 offseasons that it is a genuine tough choice to make each year. This was the method Green Bay used for years under Wolf. The team isn’t too top heavy (minus QB), but the depth is phenomenal.

You can, but not really, properly build depth in free agency because free agency is ALWAYS an overpay. Eventually the overpay will still cost you valuable depth.

One reason I liked the Gaine hire is that he impressed me with his work in UDFA and on other teams Practice Squads.

Without rating the first draft prematurely, Gaine has killed it in UDFA in my opinion. If he raids the practice squads this year as he did in years past, he will have utilized the two means by which I was interested in. Rounds 3-7, UDFA, and practice squad stealing is how you build depth. Stars can only take you so far in the NFL without a QB. Plus, any pick in the top 64 SHOULD net a multi-year starter regardless. The meat of the team isn’t first and second round players. Gaine makes his mark in this area, and the Texans have needed that for years and years.

Didn't say 2nd tier. Said 2nd. JJo was considered 2nd.

You get your stars thru the draft - AJ, JJ, Watson, Hopkins, etc.

By the way, did the Hags win the SB last year? You keep holding them up but by your standard they failed.

Who were the #1 free agents the Eagles signed last year? You haven't mentioned them.

As pointed out it takes talent evaluation. For some reason two of our OLmen left for Tennessee and Philadelphia.

What was going on to let those two guys go and think we could replace with street FAs.

Common answer - Rick Smith.

How do you get all the best players on the same team?

You can’t possibly mean getting the best QB, best RB, best WR, etc all on the same team?

It’s impossible and unrealistic.

Two of the best GMs out there have barely won one SB in the last 10 years - Ravens and Packers.

And they don’t have the best QB, RB, WR etc.

The Pats do operate differently than the "old" Texans.

Godfather refused to "negotiate" with D Brown because he had two years left on his contract.

"The Patriots are willing to adjust Gronkowski's contract for at least a year," Rapoport reported on Monday's edition of NFL Up to the Minute. "They never do extensions two years out, but they are at least open to taking a look at Gronkowski's deal and giving him some more money which he no doubt deserves.

"He has stayed away from the
Patriots, which is believed to be related to his contract. When they do come up with a new deal or part of a new deal, Gronkowski will in fact probably show up."

Here is to hoping that Gaine will remain flexible enough to find a way to keep our starting players happy. He is fortunate in that he doesn't have a hard act to follow.

I meant that you should try to get the best players possible in FA/Draft that you can get within the cap restrictions. Regardless of character issues. Not sit on cap $$$$ and not draft guys that smoke dope etc...

I thought that was obvious but I sometimes fail to take into account how other people read things. That's on me and I apologize I will try to be more concise.

Common answer - Rick Smith.

For Brandon Brooks and Ben Jones...

Not replaced by street free agents... they chose to get Jeff Allen for slightly cheaper and play him out of position. And they drafted Nick Martin who’s first 2 seasons have unfortunately been derailed by injury.

Bad talent evaluation on one player and bad luck on the other. Not signing guys who weren’t on a roster just before the season starts.

Plenty to complain about if we choose to do so. But no need to create something that isn’t there just to complain.

The Texans may not have replaced those lost players with street free agents. My mistake on that. But let’s not pretend it was a big miss in letting Brandon Brooks go and to some degree Jones too. Nick Matin was a second round player that hasn’t been healthy. I will have to look and see if anything was forewarned by CnD in his draft profile about injuries.

Why in Brandon Brooks presser did he say he felt wanted the most by Philadelphia? That’s odd.

https://www.google.com/amp/www.nbcs...ooks-signed-eagles-because-he-felt-wanted?amp

But, like I have said previously- what happened under Smith no longer matters.

Let’s move forward.

Probably the best rule change from the offseason is that rookies on the quarters system get to participate in team activities like rookie minicamp and OTAs rather than wait until graduation to take part in team activities. This rule screwed over guys like Sua-Filo and Decoud in their rookie years. But it’s not going to screw our Stanford rookies this year!

Disagree

Last off season the Eagles signed Blount/Weisnewski/Torrey Smith and most of all Jeffery. They also signed Chris Long and Nick Foles/Chance Warmack/Timmy Jernigan.

The yr before they signed Malcolm Jenkins (All Pro) and Our very own Brandon Brooks (All Pro)

I would say the Eagles have been very active in FA over the last couple of yrs.

They've also got a Lombardi because they were very active in the FA/Trade market.

Because Bill Obrien and Rick didn't want to fork up the money for him. They went with Newton unfortunately.

Ben Jones was just a fill in/journeyman at that time. We wasn't going to keep him anyways.

I wished we would've but we just didn't want to pay them when we can build up the rookie (unfortunately he got injured) and from Obrien words, Newton was improving tremendously.

So now it's very active not "top" FAs?

You're talking bargain shopping.
- $1.25 mil for Blount, $1.8 for Long, $5 mil for Smith. Wis has been there 2 years and is $2.6 mil.

Not seeing any support for top FAs.

Bottom line is compare the total # of players signed and $$$$ spent in FA and you should be able to see the difference in how the SB champs are run vs how the Texans are run.

Brooks is making $8 mil not $12+. Jeffery I'll give you as near top money. Jenkins has been there since 2014. When he was originally signed he was modestly paid at $5 mil.

They also have been more active because they got a new HC.

If you cant see, then we're done here.

Tell me, what have the Texans done comparably to the Eagles since the Texans have a new GM? Besides sit on a bunch of cap space AGAIN this offseason.

The elephant in the room is do you think the Texans have done everything possible to put the best product on the field this offseason? I think if they stay healthy and the OL is avg they're a 10-11 win team. If they had done more in FA this offseason they could've been true contenders for the 1st time in franchise history.

Colvin & HB would be the biggest 2 moves.

Agreed,

No need to put together the best OL possible, find a RB that isn't hurt or bring in a really good vet TE. Ben Watson comes to mind.

I'll ask again, DO YOU THINK THE TEXANS HAVE DONE ALL THEY COULD THIS OFFSEASON TO PUT THE BEST TEAM POSSIBLE ON THE FIELD.

Probably not. But we don't know what else they tried. And we have no reason to believe Gaine hasn't made the moves he wanted.

History frowns on saying the Texans will make these kinds of moves, even with cap space.
