Texans random thought of the day

I’d throw another WR in there somewhere as well. Hopkins is a bad ass. Fuller is hurt more often than not. Miller is hurt and underused. The new guy, Ellington, is a solid player. I’d say that group could use an upgrade.

That's something that you could probably address within the later stages of the draft. I would save the cap space for the most pressing

True. There are also free agents out there who might be productive in a different environment. I'd say look them all over carefully but burning a bunch of money on a team where your #1 (Hopkins) is going to get the lion's share of the targets isn't a good idea when you're as thin as we are. There are a lot of FA WR's out there but almost all of them are no better than what you might find late in the draft so why not take a shot at a guy to see if he can step up? Weird as it sounds I kind of like Terrelle Pryor but only if he came at a very reasonable price. I think he could be a great compliment to Hopkins but his season in Washington is a concern. Until he does it again he's a one hit wonder. I think he could do it again, I just don't know if he will or if he would come here on a prove it deal.

I too am a fan of Pryor, ever since his days at OSU but he really wants to be the #1 or #2 guy on the outside and we know that aint happening here.

I kind of think it's possible here. Fuller is great, don't get me wrong. I love watching him catch TD's. I'm less a fan of watching him in street clothes on the sidelines recovering from his last injury. The man is light, fast, and fragile. He is literally never going to play a 16 game regular season as long as he lives. That doesn't mean he's not valuable or great. It means he's a specialized weapon that's really more of a 2B or even a 3 to be fair. In the optimal scenario Hopkins moves the sticks, Pryor feeds off Hopkins and also moves the sticks, Fuller comes in as the 3 and either takes the top off the defense and scores or tries to and helps Hopkins and Pryor get open. Everybody else is either a project or a special teams player IMO in our WR corps.

Braxton Miller? Bruce Ellington? DeAndrew White? These are mostly small men who rarely make the catch or are able to stay healthy all the time. Braxton is a 15 catch a year (give or take) 1 TD making project that didn't work out. White is your project and Bruce Ellington is the other half of Fuller. Most games/seasons at least one of the two will be available. Ditch Braxton Miller, Keep White on the roster next year to see what happens, try to sign Bruce Ellington for another season and bring in Terrelle Pryor and I think you got something there. Just my opinion which I've already said isn't really worth much. Just a fan but that's how I'd try to do it.

DeAndre Hopkins
Terrelle Pryor
William Fuller
Bruce Ellington (If he wants to come back)
DeAndrew White
Rookie project WR (We may even already have that guy somewhere)

Plus you can work Pryor out as your emergency QB. You gotta admit he'd be a hell of a lot more effective than our ancient punter.

Fuller might be even more effective from the slot.
I would love him at slot now that you mention it. Really moreso of a gadget player(you know, that guy who Braxton was supposed to be) with sweeps, screens, the occasional 9-route and motion to 2-back for the triple option(I can dream, right?).

DeAndre Hopkins
Terrelle Pryor
William Fuller
Bruce Ellington (If he wants to come back)
DeAndrew White
Rookie project WR (We may even already have that guy somewhere)

That looks really good to me actually. I would also do everything in my power to sign Bruce as well if he can stay healthy.

Hervoyel - looks like you put more time into evaluating the Texans talent than Rick Smith does. :wheel:You did a good job, but unfortunately, only those of us on this website will read it or take heed.

One of the biggest differences I see between Kjo and Bouye that will never change is that Bouye has always played with incomparable toughness. Kjo tries to compensate all to often by jumping the routes.

...so what you're recommending, Johnson should invest in companies who produce Aloe Vera based products b/c they're good for burns?

Since we began recording data with the 2006 season, no cornerback has finished the season having allowed an NFL passer rating of under 30.0. @Jaguars CB A.J. Bouye is two games away from becoming the first.

Fixing the Texans for 2018 requires improving four areas
If 2018 is going to be a Happy New Year, then McNair's crew must make four fixes
By Brian T. Smith, Houston Chronicle

The annual magic of the holidays is often just another name for the hiring-and-firing season in the NFL.

A contract extension for Bill O'Brien?

Rick Smith remaining safely in place for Year 13, despite another disappointing season that will finish with at least 10 Texans defeats?

Only Bob McNair knows the upcoming answers to the above.

But let's say the biggest name on Kirby Drive takes the easy route and accepts the status quo once again in 2017. How could the Texans repair themselves in time for a playoff run - and more than nine victories - next season?

Simply getting Deshaun Watson back could mean everything. We all know that.

But this is the Texans we're talking about. Which means there are several problems to fix at once and much to be done before Watson leads O'Brien's (or a new coach's) team out of the tunnel in Week 1.
On to the wish list …

Rediscover the D

Remember when the Texans were blasting away with Romeo Crennel?

The team's 2016 defense led the NFL in average yards allowed (301.3) and ranked 11th out of 32 teams in average points (20.5). Even though Crennel's squad only had J.J. Watt for three games, the Texans had one of the toughest attacks in the league and battered Tom Brady's Patriots for three playoff quarters at New England.

The Texans' offense could come and go - almost always the latter. The defense constantly carried the team and captured the best of O'Brien's gritty squad.

A year later, Mike Vrabel's unit ranks last in the NFL in average points allowed (27.1) and is 25th in average yards (354.7). The Texans' deflated defense has allowed at least 29 points in six of 14 games this season, while Jacksonville's 45-7 beatdown in Week 15 was the clearest proof to date that Vrabel's depleted group doesn't frighten anyone in 2017.

Injuries have played a part. But the Texans' D was still dominant without Watt last year.

Part of the fall is obviously on Smith, who has allowed key names to depart in recent years - A.J. Bouye making the Pro Bowl with the AFC South-leading Jaguars says it all - while sticking with aging veterans past their primes (Brian Cushing, Johnathan Joseph).

Depth and athleticism are missing. The secondary is a mess. Linebackers and the line are out of rhythm and too rarely break through.

Defense, once the Texans' strongest calling card under Wade Phillips and Crennel, has become a serious liability in 2017.

No wonder O'Brien's team is 4-10 and getting trashed by Jacksonville.

Build a wall

The Texans feel more like a multiyear project than an overnight turnaround, simply reignited by the return of Watson.

The primary weight pulling the team down: One of the worst offensive lines in the league. THE REST OF THE STORY

This story summed up several of my prior post(s). The saving grace for this upcoming draft is the depth of talent. The Texans will begin their draft in RD3 and I'm hoping that, whoever is controlling the War Room this year, has the ability to identify solid talent that could push for an opportunity to start and the developmental talent that needs a season to be ready. I also wouldn't be against trading back in RD3 and 4 if it keeps the team within the top 10 picks in those rounds, adds a couple (maybe more) of decent picks to RD's 3, 4, and 5 while keeping targets in play. To make this 2018 NFL Draft special for the Texans, they're going to need a savvy NFL mind running the show.

Bill O'Brien said if T.J. Yates had not been cleared to return to the game yesterday, former Ohio State quarterback Braxton Miller would have taken over at QB.
The crazy thing about it is that Braxton Miller is probably the best quarterback the Texans have ever had in their roster. Besides DW4, of course. They should have been having Braxton Miller quarterbacking as soon as Watson went down.

He used to be good, but he had a problem with his arm in college which is why he went to WR even back then.
O'Brien would be smart enough to want to see him throw the ball around to check him out in pre-season/practise, etc,.

While I agree that this draft is looking better for us the positions we need both OTs, at least one OG and a safety and a corner is not encouraging as all usually need at least a year before player can start. Even if we get high potential drafted players will they be impactful next season?

If Davenport fills one of the OTs that will be very helpful especially if LT but we will not know that until he plays more and that is high risk move so just about have to draft as if he is only going to be a back up. We can draft a right tackle that should start fairly quickly. Even better if we can sign a RT in free agency, I just don't see it. Same with OGs but we could get a starter at CB (we have the money) but will that allow us to move Kareem Jackson to safety? Will O'Brien do that? We know KJ played some safety but only his run defense saved him from landing even further down list by PFF and Johnson was 119 of 119 corners. ugh. He has to come back more healthy from collarbone and ribs..right? If yes and we can improve DBs with only one pick that allows us to fill other spots. Fortunately some good players should be there in round six.

No matter how I move players around, it still looks like we have to get an OG and OT in round three and maybe add another OT that round. That and a high function safety in 4th would be hard for me to frown on. I could not get much of a read on UCLA's Kolton Miller tonight versus Utah hope I can get eval somewhere. This does not excite me:

go to link and scroll down to "second quarter" to see picture of 6'8" LT Miller

I don't think putting our most fragile player in the most likely to get hurt position is a good idea. Miller himself says he can barely throw the ball anymore; granted in emergency duty it'd be handoffs and wildcat but still.

According to Aaron Wilson:

INDIANAPOLIS - The last-place Texans' opponents for 2018 have been determined, and that includes hosting the Dallas Cowboys at NRG Stadium next season.

Besides their usual AFC South opponents, they also host the Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, New York Giants and Cleveland Browns.

The Texans travel to play the New England Patriots for the third consecutive year. They also have road games against the New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington and Denver Broncos.

Part of me wants to see the Texans on Hard Knocks, and the other part of me is embarrassed for me.

Amazon does a regular season series with a team, or at least they did the last 2 years, called All or Nothing. They did one with AZ in 2015 and then with the Rams last year. Not sure if there is one coming this season or not. It usually comes out some time after the season is over. I wouldn't mind seeing the Texans on that.

At least he's still in the NFL which is better than most of Ricky's mid-round picks

Keo wasn't in the league this year I don't think. Didn't the Saints release him before the season started? But ya, that SB ring shines bright, I'm sure.

I dunno what the hell you guys are gonna do with your time with no more Rick Smith to kick around?

Start breathing a sigh of relief knowing RS isn't around to screw up another draft. Just typing this made me feel a lot better.
