With Dylan Cole likely to be out for a significant amount of time if not the rest of season I wonder who will take his spot...

Is Shakeel Rashad on a team? I remember he showed promise but Cole beat him out. Similar style player and has experience with the Texans. I expect he will be the one to get the call if he is not on an active roster.

Yes sir somewhere mid 4th quarter or later. I watched him when he first entered the game, his pash rush was effective. Pushed LT back with ease several times that I saw. Hogan just got ball out quick.
 
What must Deshaun Watson do to play himself into the MVP race as a rookie? Somebody mentioned he needs to win 10 or 11 games. At least make the playoffs. At 3-3 we're in the playoff mix despite losing two of our best defensive players for the season.

15 TD passes in his first 6 games is a pretty good start. May have had one or two more if he had started Week 1. He didn't play the entire first half (Savage suck it up). Deshaun's first drive as a rookie was a Touchdown pass after he entered that game against a crazy good Jaguars defense. Our offensive line was horrid in that game (gave up 10 sacks) but with Deshaun they've been getting better every week.

It's really too early to be talking about the MVP race. Things can change drastically over the next 10 games. We know the men will separate themselves from the pack after week 8. If Watson is able to keep this up, he will more and likely be in the running for ROY honors.

As long as he’s throwing TDs and winning games the accolades will come. He’s not going home empty handed this offseason if he keeps doing what he’s doing...plus after 5 straight SB wins there’ll be nothing else to prove.

This has been certainly true for the Texans.

Kickoff returners keep taking the ball out of the end zone, costing their teams yards

When the NFL changed the touchback rule so that kickoffs into the end zone are brought out to the 25-yard line instead of the 20, the idea was to incentivize returners to keep the ball in the end zone, and hopefully reduce injuries on kickoff returns.

For returners, those extra five yards are a big enough bonus that the smart move is to stay in the end zone. Unfortunately, too few returners have gotten the message.

NFL kickoff returners continue to take the ball out of the end zone, even though statistically speaking they’re better off taking a knee: According to Aaron Schatz of FootballOutsiders.com, there have been 163 kickoffs taken out of the end zone this season, and only 40 of them, or 24.5 percent, have been returned past the 25-yard line. The average line of scrimmage after kickoffs taken out of the end zone is the 23.2-yard line, meaning returners cost their teams about two yards, on average, each time they take the ball out.

And that includes all kickoffs into the end zone, even those when the returner is just a step behind the goal line when he fields the ball. The decision to take the ball out is even worse when the ball is kicked deep into the end zone: On kicks that go at least five yards into the end zone, the average return goes to the 21.5-yard line. Only 22.5 percent of those kicks are returned past the 25.

It gets even worse when you consider that six kickoff returns have been fumbled this season, a risk to bringing the ball out of the end zone that doesn’t exist if a returner keeps the ball in the end zone.

So why have returners taken the ball out of the end zone 160 times this season? Because returners still think they can take one to the house. But that’s exceedingly rare: On Sunday in Jacksonville, when Rams returner Pharoh Cooper fielded the opening kickoff three yards deep in the end zone and ran it 103 yards for a touchdown, that was the only time all season a kickoff into the end zone had been returned for a touchdown.

Perhaps if you have a return man like Cooper, who’s averaging 31.7 yards a return this year, letting him take a kick out of the end zone is a wise move. But the vast majority of NFL coaches should be telling their returners to stay put. Most of the time, taking a kickoff out of the end zone is a mistake.

Cunningham is impressive, see Ricky really scored big in this years freshman crop of backers - hell Dylan Cole could end up being the undrafted defensive version of Arian Foster. I like all of Rickys picks, big, big year for him and the Texans in terms of quality additions to the roster from the just graduated college ranks.

Rick did NOT totally ignore the OL. Besides Derek Newton (not much we can do with him right now), the players need to simply step up and validate the price we paid for them.

DB needs to show up.
Everyone had XSF as a low first, high second round player. He was graded by most as the best guard in the draft. The dude needs to play like as expected.
Jeff Allen was a good guard in KC and was one of the highest rated guards in FA. He needs to warrant his salary.

Allen had significant injury concerns as a FA. There was an obvious reason that the Chiefs didn’t retain his services, atleast obvious to most in the league.

X has never been good, has hardly improved at all. 3 years of suck should be a good indication that it’s time to replace someone.

Derek Newton had one decent season and was before and then after terrible. He’s also injured to the point of being done playing football.

Duane Brown was obviously ready to hold out at the start of the year.

So, it should have been clear this past offseason that the line needed improving, and we had the cap space to do it.

It’s all well and good to point out where guys were drafted, but their NFL performance is what is important. Not a single one of our OL except Mancz should really have been counted on. You’ve got one who held out, another who is terrible, another that is terrible and injured, and another that has two ripped up knees and is just waiting for his last game check.

You don’t say “well, we tried, it’s time for these guys to step up. Let’s leave it up to the coaches.” Guys who aren’t good don’t step up and can’t be coached into playing well. You don’t sign someone way above their value and then say “they need to step up and play to their contract,” and then say it’s on the coaches. Saying the coaches need to step up is not something you said but more something that was hinted at prior to your post by others and I think part of why you posted this.

This “it’s time for the coaches to do their job” or whatever the wording by TK doesn’t make any sense whatsoever. People aren’t talking about what Rick Smith could do right now and isn’t. People are talking about the offseason where a) it was clear we needed help on the OL, and b) we had the cap space and draft picks to make it happen.

It’s even worse given that we needed help the year before too at tackle. Kudos for the Martin pick, but our RT situation after that season was clearly a huge problem.

I get that he tried at one point with the OL. Having said that, he tried awhile ago, not recently, and failed. He just didn’t come back around to it in the draft this year (Davenport looks like a big project) because the rest of the team would have suffered given the lack of depth at other positions. I understand that reasoning and also understand that the blame for that is on Rick Smith. You can’t miss that hard, especially if you’re too afraid to make a corrective signing or two in the offseason, and you’ve traded away your first two picks in the next draft.

I’m not sure being on the right or left side matters much when the guy is getting bulldozed back into the QB frequently. He’s just not strong enough. CND has gone on about why this is multiple times.

Have you ever played on the line? Have you ever wrestled? I'm just posing these questions because there is ALWAYS a side one tends to favor and it's usually the strong or dominant side. IE, A blocker on the left side pushes out and to the left, with the right side of his body. If you are right dominant trying to block mostly using the left side of your body on the right side of the line, there may be strength/coordination issues there.

Fair point, but OL are asked to move people to their right or left regardless of which side they play on. I doubt it would make much of a difference, but obviously could be wrong.

You're right. But I've also said that he should have been allowed to play in his familiar LG position ( basically his position with the Chiefs throughout his career) from the beginning. It seems though that the Texans are Hell bent to prove that Su'a Filo belongs there, despite his pretty poor showings for a long time.
