Jags-Texans home games should be flipped

Posted by Mike Florio on August 28, 2017, 7:47 PM EDT

The Texans are scheduled to open the regular season at home against Jacksonville in 13 days. However and whenever the facts play out, chances are that won’t happen.

An easy solution for the league would be to flip the home games in the annual two-game Jaguars-Texans series. The Texans would play at Jacksonville to start the season, and the Jaguars would come to Houston on December 17. Yes, that would result in three straight home games in December for the Texans and three straight road games to start the season. It also would give Jacksonville a pair of home games (followed immediately by a “home” game in London) to start the season and three straight road games to end it.

Still, it’s the quickest, easiest, and most sensible fix. Even if Reliant Stadium would be able to host the game, who would attend? With Houston and the surrounding area suffering through an unprecedented weather disaster, there’s no way Houstonians and those from neighboring communities will be willing or able to attend a football game in 13 days.

Flipping the games would buy more than a month of time, with the next game due to be played in Houston on October 1. While a month may not matter given the magnitude of the situation, it would allow the league, the Texans, and local governmental officials to make good decisions about the eight games scheduled to be played there.
This would seem to be the proverbial no-brainer. And it's also so reminiscent of what the Saints had to do at the beginning if their season in 2005 when Katrina hit NOLA.

Texans players praise Bill O'Brien's handling of displacement
By John McClain

August 28, 2017
FRISCO – During such tumultuous times for the Texans' families, friends and fans back in Houston, Texans coach Bill O'Brien has been a rock for his players and coaches.

General manager Rick Smith oversaw the move from New Orleans on Saturday night to Dallas and lined up the Dallas Cowboys' practice facility to use Monday and Tuesday.

O'Brien has been working with his players and letting them know the Texans will do everything they can to help them while their families are back in Houston dealing with the rain and floods from Hurricane Harvey.

"It helps to hear him talk to us about it," quarterback Tom Savage said about O'Brien. "He's keeping us informed as much as he can, and he's open to listening to our opinions about everything we're feeling, what we want to do and what are options are.

"He's not coming into this locker room and saying, 'Hey, this is what we're doing.' He's asking the guys. He's got kids. We've got kids. We want to be there for them but can't. He's been really supportive through the whole deal."

Outside linebacker Whitney Mercilus echoed what Savage and their teammates think about how O'Brien is handling the situation.

"He's doing a great job," Mercilus said. "He's telling us exactly what the situation is, how dire it is.

"At the end of the day, he told us we have to be professionals and come out here and practice and do our jobs until we get further notice about our situation changing."

He must want 4 times the hoopla

My initial post was meant as a reminder that someone who bought the Texans for a reported $700M and and the team is now worth 2.6 Billion plus the county built him a palace for a stadium, that the 1 million he proposed wasn't bad but wasn't deserving of the media hype that came along with it. That someone of his worth, it was no more deserving than of Joe Blow giving $25 bucks. Not that every single penny wasn't needed in the multi-billion dollar rebuild that's going to be necessary to get this community back on its feet.
Looking back I should have stopped there. This whole situation is so heartbreaking, my comments didn't help this at all.

Texans coach Bill O'Brien: We're going to dedicate this season to Houston

  • Sarah BarshopESPN Staff Writer

FRISCO, Texans -- As Houston Texans head coach Bill O’Brien spoke about the flooding and aftermath of Hurricane Harvey on Monday, he became emotional when talking about what this football season now means for him.

“I will tell you right now, we’re going to dedicate this season to the city of Houston, the people of Houston,” O’Brien said. “There are no guarantees in football, that’s not what I’m here to say, but I will guarantee that this team will go out every Sunday, Monday, Thursday, whenever they ask us to play, and we’ll play our asses off for the city of Houston. I promise you that.”

The Texans have been in the Dallas area since early Sunday morning when they couldn’t get home after their preseason game against the New Orleans Saints. Defensive end J.J. Watt said he knows he can’t undo the damage left by Hurricane Harvey, but hopes that at the very least, he and his teammates can provide a distraction to fans this season. TYHE REST OF THE STORY

As posted before, Watt was ranked 10th best projected player for 2017.

10. J.J. Watt, DE, Houston Texans
Sneaky quality: The "rip" move

Watt produced 17.5 sacks in 2015 and has two other seasons with more than 20 sacks. He's a monster with power, speed off the ball and the technique to destroy blockers at the point of attack. And the move that flashed consistently when Watt attacked the pocket in his last full season? It was the old-school "rip," the same technique that is taught during board drills at the high school level. Take half a man and use the "rip" to defeat the block.

Think pad level first with Watt. Low man wins, right? Of course. Get under the pads of the blocker, display force and power on the rip and then create leverage to the quarterback. After an injury-shortened season in '16, I fully expect Watt to produce high sack totals again with the "rip" move as a key part of his pass-rusher toolbox.

His famous "rip" move requires that he bends low under the D pads.......then pushing up and forward against resistance.......a move that puts extreme stress on the lumbar discs.

This is right up there with Ann Coulter's dumbass tweet. (And I hope she gets canned too), why are people trying to politicize this tragedy?!? The political dicourse in this country is out of control. I can't believe that guy was a college professor..he represents everything wrong with our universities.

Thank you, Rays............shows more class than a Texas team.

I might attend tomorrow night's game and root for the Stros (lifelong Dodgers fan here). The Trop is about 25 minutes from where I live now.

I heard that part of the ticket price and all of the concessions are going to relief funds. Looks like it could be a "drink beer for Houston" night.

I'll sport Texans gear since I don't own any Astros gear.

Time for Beyonce and JayZ to step up.

I wont hold my breath.
WTF is that suppose to mean? Do you have any insight on the kind of people either one of them are? Or do you just hate them for what they are? Did you ever consider that they have already or are in the process of donating money? And that they don't feel the need to draw attention to themselves? Here's a story about how Beyonce quietly has donated 7 million quietly to the homeless in Houston, http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/07/09/beyonce-hometown-houston_n_5570609.html. But go ahead with your insinuations and unfounded generalizations.

This has nothing to do with Beyonce, but the Huffington post is a complete crap news source.

This isn't a political story, story provided quotes, and was sourced by KHOU, you don't have to do much work on google to find other instances of their charity. I live close to downtown and pass the Knowles-Temenos place frequently, so if that isn't enough to validate the story so be it, the point is who is anyone to complain about another person's charity when you have no information as to what they have and haven't done, and obviously this was attempt to single out Jay Z and Beyonce for who they are.

Texans want season opener to stay in Houston
Posted by Charean Williams on August 29, 2017, 8:31 PM EDT

On Monday, PFT’s Mike Florio proposed the Texans and Jaguars flip home games because of unprecedented flooding in Houston.

The Texans currently are scheduled to host Jacksonville in the season opener, with Houston going to the Jaguars on Dec. 17. Houston already has moved its preseason finale against the Cowboys on Thursday to AT&T Stadium.

But the Texans made it clear Tuesday that not only do they want to play at NRG Stadium on Sept. 10 if at all possible, but they believe it’s “important” for the city that they play at home.

“If our stadium’s ready to go, it’s important to have that game at home,” coach Bill O’Brien said, via John McClain of the Houston Chronicle. “Maybe it gives our fans a chance, for three hours at least, to cheer and kind of forget about the trials and tribulations of what would be the last two weeks.

“I think we have the best fans, anyway, so just imagine what NRG Stadium will be like for that first home game. Football’s big in Texas, anyway, but when you put it in Houston and take into consideration such a catastrophic event, football becomes even bigger. It gives our fans a chance to cheer and let off some steam.”

Texans linebacker Brian Cushing said playing at home would “help the healing process” in

“I think that would be the most important thing for the people,” Cushing said. “Knowing how much people care about football in Houston, it’s more important than just about anything.

“For us to play that first game at home, it would smooth a lot of things over. I’m not saying completely, but, I believe it would help.

This is exactly why I thought it was a horrible idea to move that game. That stadium is going to be rocking..it'll possibly be the loudest it's ever been.. and these players need some much needed home cooking too. Mike Florio has always been a dumbass..especially when it comes to the Texans.

I almost feel sorry for the Jags walking into that atmosphere having to play against the Texans after everything that happened.
There's going to be 11 Charles Jefferson's on the field :)

I remember the Saints first game back in the reconstructed Superdome after Katrina. It was on a Monday night and The Atlanta Falcons never had a chance. Of course that was a year after Katrina had destroyed the Superdome.

The Cowboys are in the process of putting together a practice plan for Thursday at The Star that will include some kind of "community outreach," according to Jason Garrett to benefit those affected by Hurricane Harvey. After that the team will follow the plan it had if the preseason game would have been played.
