Texans random thought of the day

You do know that Wilfork had his worst year as a Pro last year? His production was down 50%.

My theory is this was because he spent to much time on the field, particularly at NT. Hopefully Reader can help out with taking some of the load off of Wilfork.

And the other thing to keep in mind is that compared to the cumulative 3 years prior to the Achilles rupture, power ratings of players in the cumulative 3 years post injury has shown on average an ~50% decrease. The NT position with common expectations of taking on double-teams is going to put much more stress on the the repaired Achilles compared to the DE position.

This is why I've always felt Wilfork's best position is DE. Belichick appears to agree with me. His last yr with the Pats that's where he mostly played and I suspect your post is the main reason why.

Texans hire director of sports science
By Aaron Wilson

Published 6:35 pm, Monday, May 23, 2016

The Texans hired former Texas A&M football player Erik Korem as their director of sports science.

Korem was previously a high performance coach at the University of Kentucky. The Dallas native was a director of sports science and football operations at Florida State and has previous stints at Mississippi State, the University of the Pacific, Fort Valley State and Arkansas
Korem has worked with Olympic medalist sprinter Veronica Campbell-Brown and record-breaking sprinter Tyson Gay and spoke at the Sloan MIT Analytics conference.

"We’re trying to, again, do what’s best for our players, trying to maximize peak performance," Texans coach Bill O'Brien said of hiring Korem. "That’s one way we can do it. I would not say that I’m an expert in sports science. I’m not an expert in anything.

"I think that what we’ve tried to do is bring Erik Korem in here to try to help us with player workloads, sleep habits, nutrition, scripting in certain instances. He’s kind of branches into a lot of different areas. He’s a very bright guy. We’re starting off really slow with him. We’re not trying to throw the whole kitchen sink at our players because that’s a big part of it. The players need to buy into it, but I think so far, so good.”

In a logistical change, the Texans are shooting more video of their practices from ground level.

"We still have videographers," O'Brien said. "We just have a lot more ability to do ground video. We went to a system where we can run it from the ground and we get a lot higher quality of video.

"We get a lot higher quality, HD, so to speak, video where we can really see it very well. That was just something we felt would help us. We still have our video guys on the ground doing a lot of ground-level video."

10 things that require ZERO talent.....

It's bad enough to see a player with no talent displaying these traits, but unfortunately we see too many talented players out there that display these same traits............

[LATE EDIT: The above should have read: It's bad enough to see a player with no talent not displaying these traits, but unfortunately we see too many talented players out there that do not display these same traits............]

Ranking all 32 NFL head coaches, from worst to first
http://ftw.usatoday.com/2016/05/nfl-head-coach-rankings-bill-belichick

13. Bill O’Brien, Texans
O’Brien earned his spot on this list after leading the Texans to consecutive winning records despite having Ryan Fitzpatrick, Ryan Mallett, Case Keenum, Brian Hoyer, T.J. Yates and Brandon Weeden making starts at quarterback. Brock Osweiler may not be a franchise passer, but he’s better than anyone O’Brien has had to work with since coming to Houston.

14. Kubiak
20. Pagano (Colts)
27. Bradley (Jags)
32. Mularkey (Titans)
3. Arians (Seems like the Colts kept the wrong coach)

What exactly is wrong with displaying those 10 things?
My mistake, I didn't proof my post! Thanks for pointing it out!...................My comment should have read:

I'm going to go back and edit.

Anyone in the Pearland area.

PEARLAND, TEXAS - Houston Texans linebacker Whitney Mercilus is on a social media mission to find his missing dogs.

The dogs, a terrier mix named Princess and a German Shepherd named Rocky, went missing from his Pearland home Thursday night.

Mercilus tweeted a photo of the dogs late Thursday asking people to keep an eye out for them.

Mercilus' dogs are safe and he will give us a follow up after they are back at home!:clap::clap:

No matter how vigilant a dog owner is, the dog can somehow be lost when a door or gate is left open, or a noise scares the dog on or off leash, or when a dog leaves a car. I noticed that Whitney's dogs were not wearing a collar or tags. I related to him that he would have much more peace of mind if he kept collars and tags on them, as well as having them chipped. He responded positively.

Or even when it's locked. Wrought iron gate cemented into the ground. Someone came to rob the house. Boxer was hitting the fence so hard he shifted the post and cement enough for our small 35 lb dog to get out. He had a tag but was never heard from again.

Seems like it would be a challenging and dangerous task to steal a German Shepard from its home territory/premises. But I dunno, maybe the ferocity of the breed is
overrated ?

sorry for your loss but hopefully he is hanging by his teeth from someone's butt.

I'm going to guess he wasn't as far along as he needed to be in order to return to such a physical sport. Wish him the best. Texans have handled the situation with pure class.

Least surprising move I can think of.

As much as I admire Q's determination, I don't think his future is in playing football.

Why do you say that?

Let's be honest here. He was a developmental 6th (5th?) round pick that needed time; lots of time to develop. Sadly he was ill and that sapped 2 years from him and his development. The odds were against him from the jump.

He was a long shot to be sure but looked pretty good what little was seen of him. Hopefully we will get to see him in the competition next year

Why do you say that?

Missing so many years of football has got to effect his mental and physical capacity for football.

Cancer and it's treatment takes a pretty massive toll on the body and with his treatment still ongoing, when is he actually going to be 'ready for football' in a way that doesn't threaten his health?

Is he still undergoing treatment? I thought he was in remission for well over a year.

Personally I think it was a mistake for the Texans to put him on IR for a second year. He's not allowed to work with the team, work on football, when he is on IR. He was healthy enough through to the final cut last season.

We should have cut him & put him on the practice squad if he passed waivers. Wished him luck if he was claimed by another team.

I understand the Texans had good intentions, but yes two years out of football is hard to come back from. But it would only had been 1 year, had they cut him & put him on the practice squad.

I read somewhere that he was still receiving treatment. He was released so that we could put him on IR with the "non-football illness" aka he'll have medical coverage. Let me try and dig up the article I read yesterday.
Also, let's not forget that he missed most of his rookie year with a foot injury. That's 3 of 3 years. I doubt there is anyone tougher than DQ in the NFL but again, realistically his chances of contributing in the NFL are less than slim. He has a future in the NFL, I just don't see it as a player anymore.

I know it's way early in the process but if I'm Cecil Shorts I'd be worried about my place on this roster. There is A LOT of young talent aiming for his spot.

If Shorts doesn't make the squad, this becomes a very, very young receiving corps.

Besides being 28 w 6 years experience, what does he honestly bring?
Not playoff experience. No big game experience.

More than likely these are our best 6 WRs. Average age of the first 5 is 22.6. Factor in Shorts and that age is 23.5.

Current age per HT.com:
Nuk - 23
Fuller - 22
Miller - 23
Mump - 23
Strong -22
Shorts - 28

I expect 1 of these to PS (HT.com didn't have ages for these guys; had to hunt them down):
W. Williams - 26
R. Mullaney - 23
T. Jones - 23

Shorts Career Stats: http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/stats/_/id/14184/cecil-shorts-iii
GP:61
Rec: 218
Targets: 427
Yards: 2,827
TD: 14

Age gives him a leg up but I think we finally have some talent at WR. Not saying he will or won't make the final 53. I'm just saying he better come up in hungry because there's only so many plates and Nuk is the only one guaranteed a meal.

I'm not arguing. I said it a few weeks ago. I think Shorts has a hard time making this squad if we go with just 5 wideouts.

That's a young room WITH him. Without him?

I'm thinking that with uncertain quality of TEs, Houston goes with six WRs + (maybe) list Mumphery as STs. As WR: 14/32 142 yds @ 9.2 PR: 36/280 @ 7.8 yds, KR: 14/338 @ 24.14. He had 14 fair catches on punts and zero on KR.

I remember at some point OBrien saying he would be better if coaches had him on one or other rather than returns and WR inside and outside.

Discounting his rookie season where he had 2 receptions, Shorts III has averaged 55/700 per season for his oft-injured career. Outside of Nuk there are 4 other WR's drafted in the last two years with a combined 28 career NFL receptions among them. I can't see OB going with an entire WR corps outside of Nuk that have almost zero NFL accomplishments.

If Mumph is returning kicks I'm going to be very bothered. We drafted 2 explosive guys to cover KR and PR. I like Mump, he just doesn't have the Umph to be a return man IMO.

I definitely agree; that being said, unless the rookies are much better I could see Coach keeping Mumph. Catching the ball cleanly and not juggling or fumbling is extremely important. As of now, I don't have Mumphrey on final roster. Over years Texans have tried several players on returns like Keyshawn Martin who had little return skills but seemed to catch the ball.

The Curse of Jacoby Jones!

SPOILER ALERT: Wendall Williams will be the return man

We need to improve a lot more in blocking for the return man, let him catch it clean & determine what his first step should be.

In case you missed my post in the Quessenberry thread:

I wish Q the best. Besides the question if he can actually come back in full football shape and having been out of football for 2 years, my concern is his ongoing treatment.....a concern I've posted previously. He was first placed on his "maintenance" monthly chemotherapy sessions in Aug 2014. His maintenance period as I suspected would be between 2-3 years......a typical period for his stage of disease. The article specifically has him state that his scheduled maintenance period has been set at 30 months. This would put his therapy as not ending until Feb 2017. During this period, his strength and endurance is likely to be affected, not to mention an increased risk of infections ranging from respiratory (especially in concentrated communal heavily populated enclosed environments such as weight rooms and locker rooms where spread of any infections is significantly increased) to cuts and scratches on the field which would typically be benign for most players. He has some obstacles to overcome to get back on the field. And still potential additional risks to stay on the field. He has admirably come a long way to be where he is now. Miracles do happen. And if anyone deserve one, it's Q.:texflag:

Although there is always the chance that the Texans may try to have him play this year, as I would have suspected.:

Aaron Wilson ‏@AaronWilson_NFL 12m12 minutes ago

Texans' pending release of David Quessenberry once he clears waivers will then likely go on non-football injury list

Even if he does get cleared to play at some point, besides all the above concerns, being out of football for so long must be a strong independent factor working against him.
