Texans Pre-Senior Bowl Mock Draft

beerlover

Hall of Fame
1st rd. - Justin Houston, Georgia OLB, 6030 258

Best combination of size, speed & strength to fit in a 3-4 as OLB
Texans could trade back to add value/picks but risky. Vocal leader would bring playmaking, pass rush skills to Texans.

2nd rd. - Phillip Taylor, Baylor NT, 6040 340

Priority need, Wade Phillips finds the most gifted, nose tackle ready run plugger in middle. Fatique will be his issue as he probably can only maintain two downs a stretch, but Texans are not afraid to use Mitchell or smaller DT in pass rushing situations. Plays with mean streak.

3rd rd. Ras-I Dowling, Virginia CB, 6020 200

First round talent who returned to school for his senior season but suffered a fractured ankle, hence the extraordinary value this late in the draft. Texans can afford to bring him back slowly from injury then start using him in nickle & special teams.

4th rd. - Akeem Dent, Georgia ILB, 6010 240

Teammate of Houston, very productive, instinctive fit for a 3-4 inside LB. Second in the SEC with 122 tackles, including 6.5 for loss. Would complete total makeover of the Texans LB group, bringing immediate impact, adding depth while DeMeco comes around to form.

5th. rd. - Brandon Bair, Oregon 3-4 DE, 6070 275

Developmental 3-4 DE but has frame to fill out, solid technique, high character family man, one of the most underrated DL in draft who projects to fit as a run stopper DE in a 3-4. Could wind up being the perfect complimet to Mario on the left side.

6th. rd. - Jah Reid, UCF RT, 6080 325

Another developmental pick. With Butler possibly on the move Texans do not have great depth here. One of the most impressive prospects playing in the East West Shrine game, talent just oozes looks like he could swing to LT if coached up, plus room to add more bulk & strength.

7th. rd. - Nathan Enderle, Idaho QB, 6050 242

Good NFL size, displays decent accuracy with soft touch, very Schaubesqe. Foot speed a little slow, not very mobile sometimes late in decision making but hey they're has to be reasons why he's still on the board in the 7th rd. Anybody thrilled with Dan Orlovsky going into his contract year with Texans?

I like Houston's size and his first step . It will be interesting to see if he gets a 4.7 . Taylor , Ellis are the big guys in the middle but Marvin Austin sure threw his hat in the ring at 312 and 6'2 . The FS is a big need and you picked up a QB to groom along the way .

Overall a good job for this time of year .

(supplemental pick aquired via Dunta Robinson leaving free agency)
That's not going to happen. The Texans signed as many qualifying free agents (Wade Smith, Rackers) as they lost (Dunta, Grossman - maybe). The best they can hope for is a 7th round pick based on the net value lost.

The other issue is starting vs not starting. They got two starters: Wade Smith and Neil Rackers and lost two starters: DR and Chester Pitts.

Throw in $ and I think we get a 6th/7th rounder rather than a 3rd.

Nice draft, reading it though I had an ache for another weapon that could stretch the field in the passing game.
The Texans rarely can get the ball to the deep threat they have now. A younger version of Walter would be nice.

and lost two starters: DR and Chester Pitts.
Pitts isn't going to qualify because he signed too late, did not extend a qualifying offer, and/or he was cut from his original contract prior to the start of the season and re-signed later. Grossman could count if he had incentives that boosted his minimum salary. Else, the Texans will get squat in compensatory selections.

This was discussed back in May. beerlover had a difficult time grasping this back then, as well.

If the Texans have a net loss of zero qualified free agents, they are due zero compensatory picks. They should, however, qualify for a net value compensatory pick, which falls in the 7th round. But if the Texans have a gain of qualified free agents this offseason, they would receive no compensatory selections, whatsoever.

It boils down the the Texans possibly receiving a 7th round pick. Or a 3rd, if Rackers loses the kicking job. Or zip, if Grossman didn't sign for enough money. No matter how hard it is to imagine.

you've got to admit, great pick regardless. next question would be then between the two, Jaiquawn Jarrett one of the best FS's in the draft or Ras-I Dowling, CB who when healthy is first round talent?

I think you go Ras-I Dowling because there are other quality fs in the draft including williams from unc and sands from wvu

I was thinking Ras-I Dowling based on Wade moving Quin to FS which would take pressure off addressing position this high in the draft because you need starting material.

so per Lucky, remarks (sounds like my manager) I will make the appropriate changes.

I love the Justin Houston choice at #1 but I think the Phil Taylor choice is a reach in round #2 at that point in draft it look good on paper. I think that it depends on the what the Texans do in free agency.

1 rd. Justin Houston - OLB - 6'3" 260 - Perfect fit if Von Miller is gone this could be a reach but the film doesn't lie Houston is a beast also keep an eye on cornerback Brandon Harris (UM Hurricanes) he will go up the charts as the draft gets closer.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kR0L2RVId90

2 rd. NT - Marvin Austin - North Carolina - 6'3" 315 - Falls in the texans lap just like Sturdivant due to charecter issues and missing all of 2010 season. Reminds me of the NT Jay Ratliff in Dallas since Wade stated that we will run the one gap system instead of two gap you someone that can penetrate and hold up against the run and austin is perfect.

3rd Rd. MLB - Donta Hightower - 6'3 255 - Alabama - Perfect to go with Demeco Ryans.

3rd Rd. WR - Greg Little - 6'3" 210 - UNC - Nice compliment opposite Andre Johnson.

4 Rd. OLB - Sam Acho - 6'3" 258 - Texas - Need pass rushers and Acho is good fit.

5 Rd. QB - Andy Dalton QB 6'3" 217 TCU

6 Rd. CB - Demarcus Van Dyke 6'1" 185 Miami (FL)

Phil Taylor is a rare & coveted commodity in a league converting to more 3-4 defenses needing legit, 6050 340 lb Nose Tackle. Texans cannot afford to make the same mistake second time around using this scheme.

Developmental 3-4 DE but has frame to fill out, solid technique, high character family man, one of the most underrated DL in draft who projects to fit as a run stopper DE in a 3-4. Could wind up being the perfect complimet to Mario on the left side.

Anybody thrilled with Dan Orlovsky going into his contract year with Texans?

Dude, fantastic draft.

1) Love Houston here. My two favorite picks here are Watt and Houston, and Houston fits a bigger need.

2) I like the idea of a big NT here. I am more familiar with Ellis, but due to his character concerns Taylor is a more likely pick.

3) Not wild about Dowling, however. I wish I saw your other 3rd (Jarrett perhaps?), because Dowling is a player without a position. In my opinion, he is not flexible/agile enough for CB, and not physical enough for FS. I would prefer a FS like Jarrett or Williams instead.

4) I like it. He and Houston would have instant chemistry, and bolster the LB corp for years.

5) Solid pick. Wont do much in the way of rushing the passer, and needs to pack on some muscle, but in 2-3 years I could see him holding down the spot opposite Mario.

6) Reid is a big, big man. Looked good in the Shrine game, and is worth a pick this late.

7) I like the idea of getting a developmental QB, but hesitate on Enderle. I liked him a lot before the season, but he just does not seem to get it. Still, 7th, worth a look.

Sadly, the real Texans draft will not measure up to this.

A 3rd round supplemental pick? I thought we were going to get a 7th at best?

I think they award compensatory picks based upon the contract those players sign on the way out - Pay-Me-Rick got a hefty sum , quite possible they get a 3rd round comp pick for him.

Dude, fantastic draft. means alot to me
1) Love Houston here. My two favorite picks here are Watt and Houston, and Houston fits a bigger need. he is just so much stronger & stout than Von Miller
2) I like the idea of a big NT here. I am more familiar with Ellis, but due to his character concerns Taylor is a more likely pick. NT position, intensified because FA pushed back, could get a little cute here & trade down for value but get burnt doing it. really like his mean streak & think Wade puts into best position to succeed
I don't like taking damaged goods which is why he's here but secondary needs as much talent to rework as possible
4) I like it. He and Houston would have instant chemistry, and bolster the LB corp for years. Texans interior D would be solid for first time ever against the run
5) Solid pick. Wont do much in the way of rushing the passer, and needs to pack on some muscle, but in 2-3 years I could see him holding down the spot opposite Mario. He doesn't even have to rush the QB , all he needs to do is get those big mitts up & knock balls down, a DE can be very disruptive multiple ways & right now all the DT/DE's, except Mario, lack that kind of length
6) Reid is a big, big man. Looked good in the Shrine game, and is worth a pick this late. I'm open to any legit OT prospect, doubt the Texans will match offers Butler gets once free agnecy begins, so it might be a good idea to be prepared
7) I like the idea of getting a developmental QB, but hesitate on Enderle. I liked him a lot before the season, but he just does not seem to get it. Still, 7th, worth a look. I thought he was your guy, nod, nod, oh well
Sadly, the real Texans draft will not measure up to this.

excellent feedback, rep you if I can :)

that was my opinion as well but take it up with Lucky who points out I have difficulty grasping this concept :handshake:

I really like the first two picks. Houston is someone im really looking at right now.

LZ just posted same thing.

Tape says it all, which is how I discovered fellow Georgia LB Akeem Dent, dude is a beast in the middle which allowed more freedom for Justin outside. sometimes its a combination of two players that make one player really stand out, which was the reason I added him along with Houston to facilatate a seamless transition. :brando:

Nice draft, reading it though I had an ache for another weapon that could stretch the field in the passing game.

yeah, I tried that one last year, Blair White, to no avail. there are going to be some strong options next year, assuming Wade Phillips can transform Texans defense into respectability? next year a perfect compliment for Dre is Ryan Broyles, Oklahoma. he is real polished, all around premier slot WR, probably late first early second. If you prefer a bigger target check out Virginia Tech WR, Jarrett Boykin he catches everything, reminds me a little of Hakeem Nicks the way he plucks the ball, huge hands.

Nice job BL!!! I agree with OLB in the 1st rd. Miller or Houston. Seems to me Houston has bigger frame than Miller but, might be a little slower. Anyway, I don't mind if its Miller or Houston in the 1st rd.

Clay Mattews ran a 4.62. We'll see but Houston seems faster. heck Cushing ran 4.65.

Phil Taylor will be the #1 ranked NT in the 2011 draft. Which is a problem of sorts because the Texans don't select until the 10th pick of second round. On the positive side this adds great value to his draft stock worthy of selection here. If he's off the board by the time Texans pick it might be a good time to trade down? then they can focus on their 3rd/4th options & add more picks. Marvin Austin is not a nose tackle he is a 4-3 UT.

Take it up with Adamjt13, who has been compensatory picks for years with a very high level of accuracy.

There are going to be some very disappointed draftniks around here once the compensatory picks are announced.

1st rd. - Justin Houston, Georgia OLB, 6030 258

2nd rd. - Phillip Taylor, Baylor NT, 6040 340

3rd rd. Ras-I Dowling, Virginia CB, 6020 200

5th. rd. - Brandon Bair, Oregon 3-4 DE, 6070 275

6th. rd. - Jah Reid, UCF RT, 6080 325

7th. rd. - Nathan Enderle, Idaho QB, 6050 242

I can see we are on the same page with Houston, Taylor, an ILB in the 3rd and a QB in the 7th. I like the CB in the 3rd, but would also like to see some safety help which I feel we are lacking BIG TIME. I guess you are planning on taking an undrafted punter? Also, what do you think about our WR's? I wouldnt mind speding a pick on one as well.

I enjoyed reading up and learning about some of your picks. Thanks BL!

Great job, we could only hope that Smithiak could do as well. (Not gonna happen)

1.Houston, would be a great pick if a trade down happens. I like Smith more, but Houston to Houston would be a major impact.

2. Taylor, good pick, Ellis would be my choice, but with Smithiak we know that's not going to happen.

3. Dowling, would rather take a true S here, Shash,Williams Carter,Black. One should be available

4. Dent,love this pick

5.Bair,See above,Lucky if he falls to the 5th rd

6. Reid, really good player, lucky if he falls this far

7. Enderle ,Great pick

Really love this mock overall. I would be really happy if draft fell this way. Best picks were Dent and Bair, I'm with you on taking a NT. If they want a good one they need to take one early and Taylor is a good pick. Bair could be a starter in 2 yrs.

the original version had an extra 3rd (assumption of supplemental compensation) & with that first pick took FS Jaiquawn Jarrett. Guess I can live without Texans drafting a safety provided they feel Quin is moving to FS. I beleive there is better talent currently on roster than shown, that it was a combination of coaching/scheme & if I'm right about converting Quin to FS then a high quality CB prospect is needed to back-fill.

5th & 6th rd. developmental picks both seem like flyers at this point, based picks on depth purposes down the road but was impressed with their play in the Shriner Game so thought it was a good idea to include them so everyone here could learn new prospect names to keep eye out for. Obviously the picks I'm most fond of are Houston, Taylor & Dent. If I could lock them in now I would, beleive those are three starters as rookies which isn't too bad considering Texans are lucky to draft two per year.

The Texans rarely can get the ball to the deep threat they have now. A younger version of Walter would be nice.

ya its not like hes lead the league in yds the last few yrs or anything

time to give this one a try :vincepalm:

thanks!

addressing NT position is gonna garner much attention in the coming months. Taylor is a transfer from Penn State, was caught up in that whole NCAA violation scam back in 08, had to sit out in 09 so 2010 was his first year back playing. Despite events he's cleaned up his act, now in only one year he looks the part of an NFL NT, matter fact watching him interviewed in Baylor Green, looks like he's already playing for the Jets? I just hope he lasts until the 10th pick of second round, just give the Texans a chance to draft him.

Kinda funny bout Dent, the more I watch Houston make plays, more I see Dent working with him in tandem. He can play the MIKE in a 4-3 or ILB in 3-4. Texans selection moves up higher in the 4th (#8) so I'm hoping he's still there? If not I would be willing to swap out the 3rd pick to get him, but unsure if Texans want to spend two of the first three picks on LB position? thankfully Wade was coaching East West Shriner game so he saw first hand what he can do. Same with Bair in 5th (Texans have their highest selection order of any round #7) but people will have to be patient with him to develop more strength & bulk on that 6070 frame.

Everyone here knows I'm a big fan of Justin Houston so you know I'll sign off on this one, Beerlover.

I also like Dent. Tackle machine with experience inside in a 34. 126 tackles this season, second in the SEC.

Dowling in the third is great value.

I love Bair as a 34 DE. He just seems like the kind of guy that will find his way to the Patriots as a late round pick and end up as a starter. Great character, smart player, hard worker. Just what you need for that position.

Reid is a hell of a get in the sixth round. If that kid can be developed....WOW.

3rd rd. Ras-I Dowling, Virginia CB, 6020 200

First round talent who returned to school for his senior season but suffered a fractured ankle, hence the extraordinary value this late in the draft. Texans can afford to bring him back slowly from injury then start using him in nickle & special teams.

when I mentioned 1st rd. talent not advocating he still was but evidently bleacher expert mock draft anaylst, Trae Thompsonhttp does?

thanks for everyone's feedback, made adjustment based off of it. hope this reflects more realistic (fine line between Texan needs/value) rendering. Me emphasis remains front 7, biggest bang for buck re-tool LB position plus stud NT.

1st rd. - Justin Houston, Georgia OLB, 6030 258

Best combination of size, speed & strength projected as a 3-4 as OLB. Texans could trade back to add value/picks but IMO too risky. Vocal leader would bring playmaking, passion & pass rush skill to Texans.

Expect them to also address position (along with CB) via FA once Collective Bargining Agreement reached.

3rd rd. Akeem Dent, Georgia ILB, 6010 240

Teammate of Houston, very productive, instinctive with excellent wrap-up technique. Second in the SEC with 122 tackles, including 6.5 for loss. Would jetison makeover of 3-4 LB group, measureables to contribute day one, adds depth while DeMeco rehabs & once inserted next to Houston will be tough to dislodge. Stock moving higher because he can play both schemes 3-4 as well 4-3 won't last until 4th.

4th rd. - Brandon Bair, Oregon 3-4 DE, 6070 275

Developmental 3-4 DE w/frame to fill out, solid technique, high character family man, one of the most underrated DL in draft who projects to fit as DE in a 3-4 5 technique. Not a pass rushing end but can chase down long extended plays because his motor never stops, length adds value with height & long arms obstructing QB passing lanes. Could wind up being the perfect complimet to Mario on the left side.

5th. rd. - Jah Reid, UCF RT, 6080 325

Another developmental pick. With Butler possibly on (UFA) the Texans do not have great depth here. One of the most impressive prospects playing in the East West Shrine game, Jah oozes talent, does not disengage, keeps locked on poor overmatched DE, looks like he could swing to LT if coached up, room to add more bulk & strength.

6th. rd. - Nathan Enderle, Idaho QB, 6050 242

Good NFL size, displays decent accuracy with soft touch, very Schaub'esqe. Foot speed a little slow, not very mobile sometimes late in decision making but hey they're has to be reasons why he's still on the board this late because he does have proto-typical size @ 6050 242. Not thrilled with Dan Orlovsky plus this is his contract year. With everyteam needing QB help felt it resonable to mock him up to 6th rd. reminds me of John Skelton, similar size, drafted by Arizona last year in the 5th rd.

7th. rd. - Josh Thomas, Buffalo CB 5010 196

Hard-nosed defensive back displays leadership, toughness with above average speed (has competed as a sprinter on the UB track & field team). could project to FS, had 5.5 TFL, 2.0 sacks & 8 break-ups. Same school as Packers RB James Starks who was selected in the 6th rd. last year. From Cedar Hills Texas.

BL,

As you know I'm real high on Peterson. I want to fix the secondary at almost any cost. In addition to this trade up signing a vet CB and a low cost vet S would still be on my to do list.

Think about this trade, it makes some sense because of MW's contract/injury situation.

If the Cards were willing to switch spots #5 to #11 amd give the Texans their 2nd rd pick in this draft and a 2012 2nd like the Texans were willing to do with the Falcons would you do that deal.

Drafting Peterson would solve alot of the problems in the secondary. Remeber the Jets traded up for Revis and Steelers for Polomalu.

What would your mock looklike if this happened?

Mine would be

rd1 Peterson
rd2 Heyward
rd2 Taylor
rd3 Herzlich

:hairpull:

so Mario is worth 2 second round picks & swapping draft slots #11 for #5?

If Peterson is there I cannot see them passing him up.

In terms of Mario being a 3-4 end first they must convert him to 5 technique themselves. I think his value will go up once he succeeds in Wade Phillips system then 3-4 teams will be more willing to talk or offer this kind of trade.

Great job beerlover, I'm really liking it.

I'm not a fan of that trade scenario steelb. We sure would be fixing our secondary with Peterson, Veteran Cb and Veteran S but... and that's a huge but you have to look at what we'd be left with after that trade.

You'd be giving up 3 players (Mario, 2nd in 11 and 2nd in 12) for 1 player. Consider our secondary fixed but that would leave us at an even larger hole in the front 7 than we already are.

LDE - Antonio Smith... not necessarily a strength
NT - Same regardless, might address in FA
RDE - No more Mario, who fits in? Another FA acquisition?

OLB - We're penciling in Barwin who's coming off injury, Cushing?, Adibi?
ILB - We're penciling in Demeco who's coming off injury, Cushing? Sharpton? Diles?

So we add Peterson at CB/S but the new void we MUST address is DE and we don't have this years 2nd to pick up an OLB or even ILB.

If that goes through I see the weakest DL in the NFL that's going to get little to no pressure.... a banged up LB unit that's going to get even more banged up because our DL sucks so bad. We'd HAVE to address DE, OLB, maybe ILB and NT in free agency because of the loss of Mario and our 2nd and what we already need.... and we just signed a veteran CB and S that's probably going take some serious cash??? I don't see it being a smart move honestly.

No, the Texans would be getting the Cards (example) 2011 2nd and 2012 2nd like the Falcons deal that we cut for Schaub. We would end up with two 2nd rd picks in 2011 and two 2nd rd picks in 2012. I would consider that fair value for MW.

With a trade like this you could have a totally rebuilt defense by the start of 2012. Two second rd picks in 2011 and two 2nd rd picks in 2012 would go along way toward rebuilding this team. (The cost is an unhappy, frequently hurt MW) Of course I would rather BL, r.martin or you making those picks rather than Smithiak.

I dont want to derail this thread, BL did a great job with his mock.

two of those 2nds Texans still have without trading MW.

Take it up with Adamjt13, who has been compensatory picks for years with a very high level of accuracy.

There are going to be some very disappointed draftniks around here once the compensatory picks are announced.

Houston — The Texans lost only one qualifying player and signed three.

He says the Texans lost only one qualifying player and signed three ..... who were those three ?

Neil Rackers , Rex Grossman and Wade Smith .... ???

Looks like Lucky could be right here .... ugh.

Those two 2nd that are the Texans.

Plus the Cards 2nds in 2011 and 2012 and moving from 11 to 5 in the 1st rd for MW.

I'm thinking if MW is unhappy with the switch to the 3-4. It's time to trade him and get something for him. That and the fact that MW gets injured every yr has me thinking it might be best to trade him while his value is high and move on.

I think that was for the 2010 draft Corrosion. Check the date of the article.

Where did you get that thought from? Maybe he is thrilled that he finally has a true DC that has succeeded in this league as a DC and may come back and set Texans sack records.

There is no way you trade Mario. You need him here to continue building a solid defense!

1st rd. - Justin Houston, Georgia OLB, 6030 258

Best combination of size, speed & strength projected as a 3-4 as OLB. Texans could trade back to add value/picks but IMO too risky. Vocal leader would bring playmaking, passion & pass rush skill to Texans. Underclassman, selected Walter Camp All-America Second Team, finalist for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, Butkus Award and semifinalist for Bednarik Award, All-SEC First Team by Associated Press SEC Coaches, Phil Steele and Rivals.com; Also selected to SouthernPigskin All-SEC Team & the list just goes on.

Expect them to also address position (along with CB) via FA once Collective Bargining Agreement reached. The combine will be his coming out party, there we'll get up close & personel look, after which he will be consensus #1 NT prospect in 2011 draft. Taxans may feel need to move up to be sure & get him?

Lance, let's say the Texans are going to use their first 3 picks on NT, OLB & DB. Based on what you see at this point, what order do you think they will go ? Also, will they get an extra pick for losing Dunta ?

They will probably get a 3rd for Dunta. As for the order, I would say OLB, NT and then safety/CB.

Geez, refresh me what was my original take, per rd. per position? seems like maybe I had it right afterall?
