Texans Player Transaction DISCUSSION Thread

Hate the Murray re- working of his contract

Hate the general running it back with the personnel from a 4-13 team.
While I agree, I wonder how many of the signings are because they want to have a good deal of veterans that will 'run' practices and know how the coaching staff wants things done? Based on the large draft haul the Texans will receive for "Go Deeper" Derrick (along with the full slate of picks they already have), we have to assume that there will be a lot of young players and rookies that will be a part of the team. Everything that I've learned about building a pro football team says that you don't want to have too many young players around without a lot of leadership to shepherd those younger players through the growing pains of being in the NFL.

Granted, they probably could have signed similar players for a lower rate, I bet they want as much continuity as they can get after turning over pretty much the entire roster last year. Wouldn't be one bit surprised if a larger than expected number of these initial FAs signed ended up getting cut. Don't see wasting those late draft picks, but I'm a spectator and not a general manager.

This could be a pretty good signing, to play opposite Greenard. He has a PFF grade of 79.5, 17th of 107. His Rush Defense grade is 75.6 (Greenard, 61.5) and his Pass Rush grade is 75.3 (Greenard, 89.2). He's an upgrade at the position over everyone on the roster except Greenard, and he'll be only 27.
I liked Ogbo coming out of the draft. Good high motor depth player that can rush the passer. Productive in college but injuries and being a size tweener have hurt him in the pros. I think 4-3 DE pass rush specialist ala Jacob Martin is his best position though.

Here’s what LZ had to say about him when he came out:

I noticed it when looking at the PFF grades just now. Seems to be a pretty good signing, his PFF grade is 83.8, 5th of 92 at his position. His coverage grade is 86.0.
Injuries have definitely affected his career.......an August 2018 foot sprain (non lisfranc) which stole 5 games..........2019 MCL that stole 6 games and dogged him most of the season..........2020 hamstring injury which was sustained in Aug and dogged him throughout the season leading to the loss of 6 games............2021 hamstring recurred in Aug and affected him throughout the season, while he missed 4 more games.

I'd take PFF's rating with a grain of salt. But if he can stay healthy, he could be a decent addition.

"When the players walk in to the building and say, 'What do we ask of a Houston Texan? What are the characteristics and behaviors that we want to embody?' When you look at those players, those are the things we want those rookies to see. You want those rookies to have some of the same qualities, but obviously this is all going to be new for them. I would say part of the team-building process is we added some of those players back to our team, and as we added new players to our team, as well."
I would like to point out that NC confirmed my assumptions about why some of these “meh” guys were resigned. They want and need leadership.

More baffling than the Pharaoh Brown re-signing.
Good point, I guess you can get rewarded for 11 holding calls in a season. I just dont understand why the Calhoun's GM's insist on holding onto these scrubs. I guess t's because they work cheap and will ensure another bad yr last yr.

I expect more 1 year prove it contracts until we can better afford the bigger longer ones next year.
One year deals actually count more against the current cap than a long term deal. The Texans could give a larger bonus, a smaller salary, and spread the cap hit across the length of the contract. Taking advantage of the cap room in future years and the ever rising cap.

The best monetary reason to give out one year deals is to minimize the current year cash flow. The best football reason is that you plan to replace the player sooner than later. One year deals are for stop gap players.

A one-year rather than a long-term contract would seem appropriate if a team is not entirely sure about a player's long-term potential at a high level.

I thought KGH would draw the most interest other than Reid among the Texans FAs. I guess not. Best value signing Caserio has made this offseason.
Speaking of Reid I saw where the Chiefs dropped 20M guaranteed USDs on him !
Wow who thought he might fetch that kind of comp in FA ? Well obviously the Chiefs thought he was was worth it
and Veach is highly regarded.

Good for the Chiefs a massive overpay. IMHO
I honestly don’t know why teams are trying to pay him so much based the on the condition of his shoulder. CND laid out how often his shoulder comes out of socket and I don’t know how you can justify that amount of money for a condition that will continue to deteriorate. Great player, but you can’t ignore the physical component to that contract.

SI: Rams Ex Ogbo Okoronkwo Could Be Edge Steal Signing For Texans

Upgrading the defense through the draft and free agency is an offseason priority for new coach/former defensive coordinator Lovie Smith and general manager Nick Caserio.

Okoronkwo as an edge rusher counts as a signing that’s under the radar. Okoronkwo is just 26 and back here on his hometown Houston team he won’t be playing behind pass-rush standouts like Von Miller, Leonard Floyd, and Dante Fowler Jr. Okoronkwo, 6-2 and 253, missed his entire rookie season due to injury. That was a bad start to a career. This is a fresh one.

I wonder I Nick is fishing in the “injured bucket” hoping to find players that have been injured and passed over because of it. Got injured but may have a high ceiling when healthy.

Cashman could fit this description too.

It's not a bad approach considering he'll get them on the cheap and they might even be somewhat ingratiated to the Texans for giving them another chance in the NFL.

I'd rather see this than signing a bunch of over-the-hill/past-their-prime players cash grabbing on their way out.

These kinds of moves are what comes back to bite GM's in the butt. They look great on paper, but then injuries hit and their team is screwed.

Ogbonnia Okoronkwo is from Alief. Injuries have been a major issue for the former Oklahoma pass rusher, ranging from an elbow injury that was misreported as a sprain but was in fact a fracture which require surgery in 2020. He had hamstring issues in 2019. In his rookie 2018 year, he suffered a foot injury (a fracture........not lisfranc). Last year, he missed significant time at the beginning of the season with a grade II shoulder stinger (which happens when nerves in the neck get stretched. Grade I's recover within 2 weeks and is associated with full recovery. Grade II's recover over a period of weeks to months and not uncommonly are associated with incomplete recovery.

The Texans have signed former Browns FB Andy Janovich on a 1-year deal.
Looks like the Texans may be getting serious about the run game.

As far as his injury history, in 2019 he suffered an elbow dislocation that was felt so gruesome that CBS refused to show the replay. Miraculously, although that was the end of his season, he did not require surgery. He came back in 2020 with a great year. Last year, he performed well but lost 4 games to a hamstring injury.

Houston has found its fullback.

The Texans have agreed to terms on a one-year deal with veteran FB Andy Janovich, NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports, per a source.

Janovich, a veteran of six seasons, finds a new home after a two-year stay in Cleveland where he cleared the way for the dynamic duo of Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt. The 28-year-old found his fourth career goal line touchdown during the 2021 season.

Janovich's arrival in Houston reunites him with running back Rex Burkhead, with whom he spent his college days at the University of Nebraska. Burkhead currently sits atop the Texans' RB depth chart with Darius Anderson and Scottie Phillips also on the roster. Houston finished the 2021 season as the worst rushing team in the NFL with 83.6 rush yards per game.

Clearing the way for Chubb and Hunt is a little misleading. He played 11% of the snaps for the Browns last year and 18% the year before.

That said, I could see him helping the Texans in red zone or goal line situations, definitely something they need to improve on. Still need somebody who doesn’t get tackled by their own cloud of dust to carry the run game though.

Is he as good as Vonta Leach? We could use someone in the backfield like that.

In 2016, he took 32% of the snaps for the Broncos (2nd most in the League). This is a time when FBs were in general utilized more than today. The rate of FB utilization would also be highly dependent on the offensive scheme.

I like the Isaac Yiadom signing - he has been with a couple of teams now including the last one - being the Packers so he has some good depth of coaching behind him. Depth and ST player, but good for the rooks too.
He has been a bit disappointing since being drafted. He has the height/weight/speed profile but hasn’t been able to stick. But he will provide competition in camp for whichever rookie(s) presumably are added.

With the Marlon Mack signing the Texans have a stable of veteran RBs. I expected them to go for some rookies this season but they may use draft to plug much needed holes in other areas. Maybe bring in a late rounder/udfa. Or maybe it means they’ll spend a high pick on a player they really like? I am just some guy on a message board what do I know?!

Texans RB room now:

Rex Burkhead
Royce Freeman
Dare Ogunbowale
Darius Anderson
Scottie Phillips

Marlon Mack makes 6. I believe Texans carried 7 into camp last training camp.
