Texans - Payne moving back to tackle

Megan Manfull, writing for the Sporting News, reports Houston Texans DL Seth Payne is working to make the transition back to defensive tackle. He played in a 4-3 system for four years in college and for his first five years in the NFL. He has become used to the 3-4 schemes and playing nose tackle over the past few years though. Payne is splitting time with DT Robaire Smith at one of the tackle positions.

Technically, she's a good journalist (light years ahead of the grammatically

I've understood that area is pretty much a hotbed for Badminton and Bridge.

Playing nose tackle is different than playing DT in a 4-3.

YOu have different roles and responsibilities.

In the 3-4 you are a clogger and block absorber.

In the 4-3 you are a penetrator.

Means you have to have a different skill set and mentaility.

Keep in mind that not all 3-4's (or 4-3's for that matter) are alike. Even though 3-4 teams use two-gap scheme more often, no defense runs a one or two gap scheme exclusively. Often in the 3-4, the weakside tackle will play one gap while the nose and the strong side tackle will play two gap. The Steelers do a lot of one gap stuff with their front 3. The Texans under Fangio didn't do much of it at all.

Dammit this is funny. Hit my bone like a two stage cluster bomb!

First just because the rule is funny ( like a mercy flush ), second because of the knowledge of the knowledge that someone knows the state rules of football!

That's awesome in itself. ( more so because it Connecticut... I don't even know where that is? It's like one of those Dark Matter states... cartographers and pilgrims say it is there, but you never see it )

And ditto to 4-3, 3-4 comparisons.

Look at the Patriots 3-4/4-3 that played 1-4, 1-5, 2-4, 2-3, 2-5 all in the same games for the past few seasons.

then I think Carolina keeps their 4-3 steady through out most of the game ( not that I watched a whole hell of a lot of their games )
