Andre Johnson on Arian Foster (calf): "I don’t think it’s anything serious. I think if it was, he would've said something."

PDS ‏@PatDStat 7m
Watching JJ Watt work today in drills is unreal. His footwork and ability to change direction is special. Leads every drill. #Texans

Talked to DeVier Posey said he is getting close to be cleared to run again. #Texans

Heat, humidity and Memorial Day weekend were the winners today at Day 4 of OTAs. #Texans

Interceptions everywhere. Kareem Jackson, DJ Swearinger, Orhian Johnson and Willie Jefferson all had interceptions. #Teans

Foster took the first handoff and took two steps and Immediately went off, good news for the #Texans it is a calf strain per Coach Kubiak.

Stephanie Stradley ‏@StephStradley 19m
FWIW Arian Foster sat for a while watching practice with ice on calf before taking cart back to Reliant. No immediate cart off

Tania Ganguli ‏@taniaganguli 24m
"Keshawn, he looks comfortable, that's the one thing that stands out," Andre Johnson on Keshawn Martin. #Texans

Houston Texans ‏@HoustonTexans 12m

Kubiak very impressed with @bbrooks_79, says he essentialy made him starter at right guard during OTAs.

Great news on Brandon Brooks.

Yep, he came on strong towards the end of the season. It's nice to see/hear of him taking it a step further. I think this dude can be great if he continues to progress.

Yeah me too .... but I do think they are in a better position this offseason than last with the two rookies , Harris and Newton fighting for the spot over an injured Butler and Newton being thrown to the wolves.

True, but not a whole lot better imo. Newton was borderline horrible towards the end of the season. Was it due to injury? That's possible, but he'll be almost starting over again physically. Harris played a tad better last year but not enough to earn the job. As much as I dislike it, it's looking like another possible rotation situation.

Brennan Williams being out again isn't helping with the cringing either. Ha

Nick Scurfield ‏@NickScurfield 52s
Rookie T Brennan Williams (knee) has yet to practice in OTAs. Could be back next week #Texans

Kubiak said WRs Lestar Jean & Keshawn Martin have been “excellent” in OTAs. Taking advantage of their opportunity #Texans

PDS ‏@PatDStat 49s
Bonner needs polishing and time to develop. Very underrated pick for the #Texans IMO.

Alan Bonner has a the physical tools to be a good player. In and out of breaks he is a sight to see and off the LOS he is fast. #Texans

Lestar Jean caught the ball well today. First time all OTAs I have seen him take control on the field. Lined up inside and outside. #Texans

Rookie OLB Willie Jefferson pulled his playoff Watt impression today to end practice. A pick 6 from a rush position. #Texans

The interceptions made by the D today were impressive. More about better plays by the D than poor throws. #Texans

#Texans offense still shaking off the rust, but when they did complete passes they were for some good yardage.

Phillip Supernaw and Sunny Harris will be out for an extended period. Both have foot injuries. #Texans

James Palmer ‏@JPalmerCSN 5m
Brennan Williams was still out 2day. Other #Texans out, Supernaw (cast on foot), Sunny Harris (boot), Brandon Harris (concussion)#Texanstalk

RT , NT and ILB the three biggest questionmarks right now ?! I think so ...

You can add WR to that as well. Its AJ , a rookie , a guy with an achilles tear , an underperforming (last year) LeStar Jean and Martin .... and some practice squad fodder.

NT Earl Mitchell a rookie and Jared Crick from what I understand will see time at NT.

Agreed on all points. I've voiced my concern on the ILB and RT positions, but not a lot on NT. You're right though, NT is a bit of a concern. I like Mitchell but he struggles against double teams and is often taken completely out of the play. McClain has been mentioned as a possible rotation guy. Hopefully he or someone else can earn the spot

Thank God! Only the 4th day of OTAs and we can already put the whole vegan bullsh!t to rest now that Arian has left practice early with some veal.

I hate to be "Negative Nate" as my buddies sometimes call me, but calf and hamstring injuries are much more serious than medical staff will let on due to the lingering effects. Not because of severity, but because of the cumbersome repeat strain. A strained calf can be one of those oddball on again off again injuries. Ask a sprinter if he'd rather have a calf or groin injury, I'm sure he'd take the groin.

Just my opinion, YMMV.

I kind like this.... kinda don't. Where the heck are our WRs? What's up with our QBs?

.........I'm not liking it.

I thought our line was pretty good with Winston & Briesel on the right side (running the ball) & BenJones looked like a better Briesel to me. I figured that would be his spot to lose.

Bbrooks looked more like WadeSmith that one good year he had (don't know how he got a probowl bid last year other than people were voting for Caldwell even though he wasn't playing). & the pics I've seen of Brooks this offseason..... he looks lean & mean.

If WadeSmith returns as the starter at LG, that will be our weak spot.

Don't think that's usually a serious injury, not like a pulled groin or hammy ?

In before Doc posts and scares the crap out of all of us.

By now, you all should be aware that a strain is a degree of “tear.” I would expect that the extent of the tear will be defined shortly with an MRI. Also, as you should all know, muscle tear recoveries are not always predictable. The best to be hoped for is a Class I tear, where the muscle is stretched causing some small micro tears in the muscle fibers. Full recovery typically takes approximately two weeks, because you want to rest the muscle and not try to stretch it while it continues to try to shorten (spasm). A grade II calf strain means that there is a partial tearing of muscle fibers. Full recovery typically is more prolonged and takes approximately 4-8 weeks. With a Grade III calf strain, considered a very severe strain, there is a complete tearing or rupture of muscle fibers in the lower leg. Full recovery can take 3-4 months and, in rare instances, surgery may be needed.

calf_tear.gif

The Texans have referred to this as a “calf strain” and therefore, technically, you would assume that this was not just a simple short-lived spasm as seen in dehydration or deficiency states involving elements such as calcium or magnesium.

calfstrain.jpg

The problem with calf tears, like with most muscle tears, only somewhat moreso with this muscle group (gastrocnemius muscles and sometimes the soleus muscle), especially with not enough rest and rehab, is re-injury. In fact some sources note as high as 40% can result in re-injury to the same calf......or the other. And, of course as we all know, without proper healing time, compensatory injuries to other structures are also possible. Hopefully, tomorrow we get good news, and whatever the extent of the injury, Foster will be handled more conservatively and wisely than before with his hamstring injury(ies)....especially since a re-injured calf tear can become more of a very long-term chronic problem than with a hamstring re-injury.

[As one last note for completeness, due to the proximity/attachment of the calf muscles into the Achilles tendon, Achilles tendonitis can sometimes share some of the presentation seen with calf strains.....this should be able to be distinguished through the MRI imaging study.]

Believe it or not, my intent on this board is not ever to "scare," but only to inform. Over the years, I have been very impressed with the knowledge base that you have all retained and have also quite impressively been able to begin to recognize that injuries when they do occur are always "scarey"......especially when answers are not readily immediately available.

I'm not too worried about WR. Yeah, there are going to be question marks, but I have faith in Hopkins and the development of Martin. From all reports right now, it sounds like they're doing well.

I liked what I saw from Earl Mitchell last year. I don't know the stats, but I know what I saw. I saw a guy always in the backfield making plays, and then coming back out to sit on the bench so Cody could come back in.

Also, I hate to be that guy that always brings it up, but my biggest concern is QB. Schaub really underperformed near the end of the season last year. There's really no reason to believe he's suddenly going to get any better this time around at 32.

It's nice to read reports on our defense getting picks, but that also means there's a QB throwing pick without too much pressure (it's practice), and that is unacceptable.

& we've also got OD & Graham. They won't be able to provide the help a quality WR2 could, but they should be able to help us move the chains & keep Schaub out of trouble.

If we can get a big play or two out of Hopkins every now & then, maybe that will be enough to keep defenses more honest than not.

Thank you for your info as always Doc!

At least he got off from cart and walked off from training site tells me it is likely that his injury is Grade 1 or in worst case Grade 2(not likely) right? I injured calf myself and it hurts like heck when injured but later, I was able to walk off with a little limp. Like you mentioned on Grade 1 injury, I was OK in a few weeks.

You bring medical reality to what would otherwise be obfuscation and misleading statements from insiders. It is well appreciated.

SOTT: Texans OTAs: Day Four Recap

Heading into week two and OTA #4 for the Houston Texans, all of the news centered around the exit of one key offensive starter during practice.

The Memorial day weekend, the Texans heat and humidity set some players back during practice, mainly the younger players. It was a sluggish practice that had it’s moments of good football being displayed, but it’s only OTAs and everything is not going to be perfect...

RT, OLB and the second safety spot concern me the most. ILB not so much since we will still have Cushing near him. OLB seems to be the thinner position at the moment with Barwin going away and Reed taking reps at ILB. The other safety spot (ie not Manning) is currently our choice between a recovering Reed and a rookie Swearinger.

Arian Foster injury nothing compared to DeAndre Hopkins' harsh schooling in Texans pressure cooker

Organized Team Activities — the NFL's version of unofficial spring practice — has a way of growing monotonous. It's still a long, long way till the season, the weather's already hot (at least in Texas) and little that happens is going to truly decide who wins the few jobs really available.

Under this environment, things like a minor calf injury to a star like Arian Foster can blow up (at least briefly) on Twitter and in the news cycle.

But while Foster getting carted away from the practice field (with a strain) on the first day after Memorial Day Weekend figures to be forgotten by training camp, other largely overlooked scenes will live on and leave an impact long into the season. Like Johnathan Joseph taking buzzed-over first round draft pick DeAndre Hopkins to school.

"He gets a little mad when he doesn't make a play. That's good."

It's been apparent to anyone who's watched recent practices. When Joseph finds himself covering Hopkins in a drill, the intensity level ratchets up and the veteran Pro Bowl cornerback gives no quarter.

There's Joseph stepping in at the last moment to break up a sure completion to Hopkins on a slant, flashing a smile as the rest of the Texans defensive backs erupt in hoots and hollers.

There's Joseph matching the rookie stride-for-stride down the field and denying him from hauling in a long bomb.

There's Hopkins getting enough separation to catch a deep pass on Joseph.

No. 24 is pushing No. 10 and he's getting some push back too.

"I love those one-on-one battles," Joseph says. "It doesn't matter that it's practice or OTAs. There's no, it's only . . . It's not just practice. Every day is a competition.

"You have to win those one-on-ones to win games."
REST OF THE STORY

The latest Z-Report

About an hour into OTAs this afternoon and during the scrimmage portion of practice, Arian Foster came up lame after a play and had to be helped off the field while putting no pressure on his right foot. He had his leg iced from upper ankle to upper calf and media members at practice all played a guessing game about Foster’s injury.

So if I were to just show up tomorrow, I'd be able to watch all the festivities? Or do I need to buy a ticket?

Whenever my friends and I discuss athletic injury news, I'm usually pretty good about predicting the diagnosis and recovery time. I tell them I have an inside line to a sports doctor.

Arian Foster left practice today with a "strained calf".

soooo... this isn't just a sneaky way for Kubiak to get all those UDFA RBs more reps and/or get Tate more reps with the 1s...??

Ice would not be applied if simple muscle cramping/spasm were the case........heat would have been placed.

As far as sticking around for a while and watching on the bench, with a calf tear, immediate rest and ice wrap would be essentially the same for any Class of tear. There is not an emergency need to obtain the MRI or other further acute treatment. BTW, not to be accurately diagnosing the extent of Foster's specific injury, Class II tends to be the most common level of calf tears seen in NFL players. I doubt that the Texans would "manufacture' a scenario that would stir the pot and introduce artificial concern for their premiere RB. There would be too many other acceptable ways that they could offer the other RBs more play time, if that were their goal.

Injuries to running backs, even starter Foster, never worry me too much because they seem to always find another back to plug-in who can effectively run the ball. Now if you'd say something about Andre or JJ or Jonathon Joe or Duane B. getting injured, you'd make me anxious.

Sounds like he got it pretty good. I expect him to be ready by TC

Gary Kubiak says Arian Foster has "pretty good calf strain." He is on crutches right now, will not practice again until camp but will b fine

PDS ‏@PatDStat 17m
TE Ryan Griffin also has some drops. Struggles with routes then like a switch he puts a string of good routes and catches together. #Texans

Bonner had some easy catches that led to drops. Then he goes vertical and runs by a corner for a deep ball TD. Has all the skill. #Texans

Stephanie Stradley ‏@StephStradley 21m
@HoustonTexans OTAs: Keshawn Martin VERY impressed with Shane Lechler. Have to really prepare for his kind of big punts, esp in wind.

PDS ‏@PatDStat 46s
Favorite matchup to watch is Kareem vs. DeAndre. Jackson gives Hopkins fits majority of the time. #Texans

Good to see Brandon Harris (head) and Brice McCain (foot) back at full speed today. Harris had a solid day today. #Texans

I keep seeing rookie cornerback A.J. Bouye make plays. Today was no different. Seems like he is always breaking up passes. #Texans

Really liking the player Garrett Graham is turning into. Him and Schaub looked good in 7 on 7 together. #Texans

Despite Trevardo Williams speed, the TEs worked him good in coverage. Williams has the quickness to cover, but has to learn it. #Texans

Cierre Wood is the RB of the rookies that has the edge. Bigger frame, runs well and looks better built for the running game #Texans

Hard not to like Dennis Johnson at runningback. Still looks in tune with the offense. Good with the ball in his hands. #Texans

I have a lot of respect for the #Texans veterans. All have been seen helping out the younger players during drills and down time.

The rookies had more of the playbook installed this week. You can tell a considerable difference with them. Way more thinking. #Texans

I don't have a link, but I heard BenTate's comments about getting extra reps. Basically said it's no big deal, can't learn anything in practice.....

I think he's going to be in the doghouse again in 2013.

Quote sheet today. Last comment is a new one. It was windy as hell.

Head Coach Gary Kubiak
(on RB Arian Foster’s injury) “He has a pretty good calf strain, and we left him in (the training room) today. He’s hobbling; he’s on crutches today and will be for a couple of days. He’s going to be fine, but don’t expect me to bring him back out here. We’ve got two weeks left, so we’ll just go to work on getting him healthy, getting him ready for training camp. It’s unfortunate, but we feel lucky, too. He didn’t do anything; just took a step. He’s going to be OK, but like I said, don’t expect to see him again (in organized team activities).”

(on whether RB Arian Foster could return to practice during the team’s minicamp June 11-13) “No, I don’t expect that. We’ve got two weeks left of the offseason, so obviously we’re not going to do anything to take a risk with him.”

(on whether he expects RB Arian Foster to be in danger of missing any parts of training camp) “No, luckily we’ve got, what, two months almost now before we get ready to go. It might have ruined Arian’s summer; he’s going to have to be here a lot, but that’s OK and he’s going to be OK.”

(on if there are any other health issues with the team) “No, we’ve still got the problem with (TE Phillip) Supernaw and (NT) Sunny Harris. They have not been back since they had their issue the second day. I rested a lot of older guys today, or veteran guys. I wanted to watch a lot of young players practice in different positions, with the first group and stuff, but other than that we’re fine.”

(on the status of S Ed Reed) “I had a long conversation with Ed yesterday. I think he actually got back to Atlanta on Saturday. We have him in a rehab program there in Atlanta. Next week, I think, is their (Baltimore’s) ring ceremony and going to the White House, so that’s pretty important for him to get that stuff done there. But he will be back here as we approach the mandatory minicamp and be here for the rehab process, so you guys should see him in, about a week.”

(on the play of the quarterbacks today compared to Tuesday’s practice) “They were better today. They struggled a little bit yesterday, especially in some seven-on-seven stuff, but that’s part of it, and come back today and were pretty darn good today. I actually let (QBs) T.J. (Yates) and Case (Keenum) split the team portion of practice today with the first group and held (QB) Matt (Schaub) out. I wanted to see those guys operate with our ones, and both of them, I thought, had a pretty good practice.”

(on the improvement shown by QB T.J. Yates) “T.J.’s career has been interesting because it was like, ‘Boom,’ at once, and so many great things happened that year and his confidence is sky-high. And then you come back your second year and play the preseason, not play but about 20 snaps in the regular season and it seemed like nothing went right in those 20 snaps. That’s part of being a backup quarterback, because you hinge on that confidence for long periods of time, so we just need to get him going again. He’s working hard, he’s doing good stuff, he’s getting pushed extremely hard. What is this, now, year three? So I’m expecting him to continue to grow as a player.”

(on RB Ben Tate) “Ben’s fine. Obviously, he steps up today and works as the starter, but Ben’s been working good either way. He’s had a really good offseason; he’s been here every day, and it’s an opportunity for him this next six practices to be the bell cow, so to speak, and that’ll be good for him in the long run.”

(on FB Greg Jones’ performance thus far in minicamp) “We’re not in pads, and obviously that’s where a fullback’s strength is, when you watch them in pads. But what we’re going to do is we’re going to be smart with him. He’s definitely going to be a one-a-day guy, maybe a one-every-day guy. I know what he can do; I know what he’s going to bring to this team and I want to make sure I get the most out of him late in his career. I’ve been very impressed with his mental approach and his professional approach to what he’s doing. That’s why we brought him here.”

(on NT Earl Mitchell) “You watch practice every day and Earl acts like a full-time starter. What year is Earl? Three, four, something like that? If it’s time to be a big-time guy, it’s time and Earl’s acting like that. That’s been big for him.”

(on what he wants to see out of RB Ben Tate in the offseason and training camp) “I just want him to be healthy, that’s the biggest thing. When Ben’s on the field, he’s productive. He needs to have a good offseason, which he’s doing his part and he’s done all of that. Obviously, now his reps are going to pick up, but to me, if Ben’s in one piece, Ben is going to be very productive for this team.”

(on what he told the team at the end of practice) “Oh, I don’t even know what I said. I forget from one minute to the next. We were just talking about a couple of things. I think what I was probably talking about was I told the guys that it says a lot about your team when the coach can sit down 12 veterans and watch you practice the way you practiced today. That’s a big part of what we do for a living. We’re going to have guys get hurt; we’re going to have guys miss games, and there can never be an excuse in what we do. So that was my message today, and I liked the way we practiced.”

(on rookie TE Ryan Griffin) “He’s doing a lot of good things. Doing a lot of rookie stuff, too, but he’s very talented. He’s getting a lot of reps because O.D. (TE Owen Daniels) is only going every other day. He fits the mold for what’s been successful with us, so we’re excited to have him.”

NOTE: The final two questions of Gary Kubiak’s press conference are not included in this transcript. Some of the recorded audio was indecipherable due to wind.

I liked what I saw from Earl Mitchell last year. I don't know the stats, but I know what I saw. I saw a guy always in the backfield making plays, and then coming back out to sit on the bench so Cody could come back in.

I'm not a big stat guy. They can be misleading but if he were "always in the backfield making plays" I would think he would have better stats than, ZERO sacks, TWO tackles for loss and only ONE QB hit in EIGHTEEN GAMES! :headhurts:

FWIW, no pads, but Kubiak was as animated talking about Earl Mitchell as anyone. Surprisingly so.

Sort of like Keshawn Martin talking Shane Lechler. Quiet guy and then when you ask about returning Lechler's punts, he got really animated about BOOM those kicks.

I'm wondering why Arian's strain occurred so easily. Maybe he over-trained during his workouts, and didn't rest the muscle long enough. What is the typical cause of that injury?

Something like that can happen at any time.

He could have been slightly over-trained. He could have actually injured it doing something else but didn't realize it or didn't realize how bad it was. Or the random factors might have just aligned and whammo.
