Texans/NRG field being changed to artificial surface for remainder of 2015

Let's not act as if the field in some stadiums doesn't look like it has cancer, dandruff or some other blotchy disease.

New Orleans, Minnesota come to mind first. Disgusting, discolored garbage. An eyesore and an embarrassment.

I'm watching on TV. It matters what it looks like.

Why? Because it makes u feel better? Get over yourself.

Aaron Wilson reported that NRG Stadium AstroTurf install started Monday, completed Wednesday, lines painted Thursday along with inspection, logos painted today. Long process.

I have a friend that works at the stadium, he said that one of the turf installers tripped on a seam during install and has a high ankle sprain, and one person on the crew painting the stripes hit an uneven spot and blew his ACL and MCL.

Lawrence McCay with the National Stadium Employees Association was quoted today, "The new turf at NRG Stadium is a tragedy waiting to happen, they need to address this travesty and fast".

Rick Smith was contacted today and before saying not comment, was clearly heard whispering this under his breath, "g-d damn it, not this sh!t again already".

Comedy Gold, son. You should go on tour.

Maybe we could put in digital endzones that flash fireworks and a pawing bull, over a blue background of course.

That should look cool on TV.

I just can't get past the fact that some are complaining what astro/field turf looks like....

There are many types of turf to choose from. We chose the one that looks like ****, the one I DIDN'T want us to get.

Looks like sh!t... almost as bad as the Saints field.

Yep. Exactly.

Exactly! It's that funky looking stuff that looks like its made out recycled grocery sacks.

We could have chosen much better choices, instead we chose that **** the Rams use. And their turf looks crappy.

Can y'all post a before and after? Because I am not seeing a big difference.

You're not going to see a difference from these birds eye views. & actually I've never seen a field level view that demonstrated the uneven pallets, or holes in the field.

It's the year 2015 and we can't find a better playing surface? Why doesn't the NFL step in and help us out? Use the same beautiful field that was used for the Super Bowl back in 2004, and will again be used for the Super Bowl in a few years. Would it cost too much since it's specially grown?

Unless artificial lighting was brought in, that wouldn't work past a couple of weeks.

I wonder if the midfield logo has to be a certain size. I'd like to see a huge logo midfield.

I've never seen size restrictions, just the following NFL Rule:

Care must be exercised in any end zone marking, decoration, or club identification at the 50-yard line, that said marks or decorations do not in any way cause confusion as to delineation of goal lines, sidelines, and end lines. Such markings or decorations must be approved by the Commissioner
NFL RULE BOOK

It's turf. Get over it. The lightning in indoor stadiums makes it shine like that. You see it in person....it is fine. The Texans would probably get a new turf if they were to go Artificial turf permanently. Less wear and tear.

Im pretty sure most of you have either never seen the new style Artificial turf in person, let alone been on it. I've been at games at the Georgia Dome, Super Dome, and NRG. It basically looks the same. If you go onto the turf, you see the black rubber pieces that makes up the infill. That stuff moves around over time. It is probably more noticeable in Domes and indoor stadiums than outside. Like any "carpet", wear patterns form and the ground crews have to do maintenance to smooth those over.

LOL, STL turf caught on fire before the game.
I would have thought that any indoor installation/field material would have to be fireproof....especially with the use of pyrotechnics

Steelers-Rams game delayed after field turf catches fire during pregame
Nick Wagoner, ESPN Staff Writer

ST. LOUIS -- Sunday's game between the St. Louis Rams and Pittsburgh Steelers was delayed almost 30 minutes because the turf near the south end zone caught fire during pregame introductions.

The Rams were introducing their starting offense about 10 minutes before the game when a flame from the machine that is supposed to spit fire directly into the air caught the turf. Edward Jones Dome employees quickly ran onto the field to extinguish the fire, but the residue left a mess about 10 feet wide.

Stadium employees started by trying to sweep the residue off the field, but when that didn't work, a vacuum was used.

Soon after, referee John Hussey announced that they were "in the process of getting the field cleaned" and that it would be "less than 10 minutes."

But that was an optimistic view, as both teams soon went to the locker room as the cleanup continued. The staff then brought out a mop and water to clean it up, including a yellow "Caution: Wet Floor" sign.

The Rams and Steelers returned to the field at 1:20 p.m. ET, with kickoff taking place 8 minutes later.

In a statement released Sunday afternoon, the Rams blamed the fire on "a pyrotechnic cart malfunction that resulted in the turf catching fire briefly."

"The fire was quickly extinguished by field staff. Out of an abundance of caution for player safety, the game was delayed to clean any residue from the turf. NFL officials were involved from the onset to monitor the cleanup process and approve the game to begin when it was deemed safe," the Rams said.

The FieldTurf surface at the Edward Jones Dome is cushioned with rubber pellets, some of which apparently melted before the fire was extinguished.

Rams medical staff members offered input on the cleanup, presumably warning of the potential health concerns of the residue from the fire extinguisher and the burned surface.
