Texans Not Trading Down

Signing defensive end Anthony Weaver means the Texans will not be trading down in the first round to select North Carolina State defensive end Mario Williams.

We could still trade down to get D'Brickashaw. Just because we got a DE doesn't eliminate the possibility of trading down.

Also, this should go in the draft forum...

Yah I figured that out right after I posted it. Mods, Move when ready

Anyways, I just don't see us trading down for D'Brick with the re-signing of McKinney to play left guard. I envision Pitts and McKinney as part of our left side.

I agree, the FO has said on a couple occasions that they are pretty satisfied with Pitts as our LT, so I don't see us trading down for D'Brickashaw. I think we will look for a RT in this offseason, and I think we could very likely go after Chris Chester in the 4th-5th round of the draft to play RG for us, but I don't see D'Brick being part of that solution. I haven't heard anything about Wiegert, either a resigning or cutting, so I wonder if they plan on keeping him as our RT since he played fairly well there last year, unless of course they can get a better option at some point this offseason. I think Wade is gone after June 1st as I don't see him being a good fit in their zone blocking (wasn't very good in our version of it last year either) and I haven't heard anything positive about him from the FO yet this offseason. Unless they decide to take Mario and either play him at RE or move Weaver to DT, cut Payne, and play Mario at LE, I think Reggie is locked in as the #1 pick, a little disappointing seeing the incredible talent that Mario is. Reggie should be a great talent too, but to me Mario is more special and I think we can get by better on offense without Reggie than we will on defense by overpaying for a DE that is smaller, weaker, and much slower than Mario Williams.

And that's exactly what the story says, won't be trading down "to select
North Carolina defensive........".
I have a feeling the Texans will bring a lot of players in for visits who would be
potential first round picks. Who knows, maybe a dozen guys ? They might get
a very strong offer from someone in the 10-15 spot and get a whole basket
of picks along with the #1. They traded down and made a surprise pick last
year, no telling what this new regime will do with their #1.

Honestly I am trying to stay optimstic about getting Mario. Don't care if we trade down or not he should be our guy. Not to say I will be overly pissed with Reggie Bush, but I think our last ranked defense is in much more of a need for a playmaker than our offense.

Last i looked McLain wasn't on the coaching staff,or front office. I still think we will trade down if possible, and i think we will take Mario.I also think we will try to trade Babin, hopefully to Miami so he can still play for Capers.

McClain also said last year that the Texans wouldn't draft a DLmen in the 1st because you didn't need to in a 3-4. McClain's strength is when he can parrot insider information (getting the scoop on the Texans' interest in Dunta Robinson) not when he is trying to analyze on his own.

John McClain has just reached the zero credibility plateau with this article. We have signed Weaver therefore all the needs for the Texans have been met so why trade down...and this whole time I thought we had a flood of needs.

Nobody knows what we are going to do, yet this guy loves to pretend to always have it figured out. Enquiring minds want to know John...how do :pigfly: ?

That argument was also actually a parrot of a theory that floated around NFL circles. It had no basis in fact when you looked at the drafting patterns of current 3-4 teams.

The best part of this signing is not only do we not end up with the most dominant pass rusher, but the saints or the Titans will get him now. NO papers are reporting that if they acquire Brees then they will look at Mario Williams at number 2 and move Charles Grant inside giving them one of the most potent and young D-lines in the league. They feel that would go the way of the Carolina Panthers.

Yup, didn't it come from a quote from a coach back in the late '70's/early '80's? Since then it has floated around as conventional wisdom.

I feel so cheated. If we are signing mediocrecy in order to fills holes so we can draft bush...I, I, I dont know what I'll do!

:brickwall

If the Saints sign Brees , the Titans get the QB of their choice . The Jets get a choice of the other two and that leaves one for teams like the Raiders . Then you throw Culpepper in the mix .

If someone wants to trade up now its for Williams . If Bush has a good pro-day and creates a buzz then teams may covet him as much . I feel QB demands are falling .

Signing Weaver was a CYA move by the FO IMO. I think they believe that they will not get an offer that they would trade down for, so they picked up a good young DE from one of the top defenses in the NFL. That way on draft day when they have to use the 1st pick and take Bush, they will still have the DE that they needed. As good as Mario MIGHT be...nope, but not chopped liver either.

I still have not seen any official word about Weaver or Rosenfels being signed other than one article on ESPN that is a word-for-word off of an article in the Chronicle by John McClain, so I'm beginning to wonder if these deals have actually been made or if a rumor got out after they visited Houston yesterday (McClain seems to spread a lot of dookie around on pretty frequent occasion).
